Abstract:We present a complete and practical algorithm which can determine the number of distinct real solutions of a given polynomial system of equations and inequalities with integer coefficients mechanically. Based on this algorithm, a program called nearsolve has been implemented in Maple. The algorithm and program have been successfully applied to many problems with various backgrounds and to automated discovering and proving for inequality-type theorems.

Abstract:In chemical engineering, solving systems of nonlinear algebraic equations is common Moreover, the variables arc usually limited to a valid physical domain; thus, finding all physical solutions is more meaningful. In this work, a novel strategy is proposed for finding all physical solutions within the variable bounds. First, Grobner basis method is introduced to triangularize the original system, which enabling the solution of univariate equations only. Next, a real root isolation algorithm is developed to compute the disjoint intervals such that each interval contains one solution. Finally, a numerical method with convergence monitoring is proposed to locate the solutions. Case studies show that the proposed method can accurately analyse the multi-solution features of the systems. All physical solutions can be found directly.

Abstract:Real solution classification of parametric polynomial systems is a crucial problem in real quantifier elimination which interests Volker Weispfenning and others. In this paper, we present a stepwise refinement algorithm for real solution classifications of a class of parametric systems consisting of polynomial equations, inequalities and inequations. For an input system, the algorithm outputs the necessary and sufficient conditions (in terms of quantifier-free formulae) on the parameters for the system to have a given number of real solutions. Although the algorithm makes use of a pcad algorithm, it is different from any existing methods.

Abstract:A new algorithm for real root isolation of zero-dimensional nonsingular square polynomial systems based on hybrid computation is presented in this paper. First, approximate the (complex) roots of the given polynomial equations via homotopy continuation method. Then, for each approximate root, an initial box relying on the Kantorovich theorem is constructed, which contains the corresponding accurate root. Finally, the Krawczyk interval iteration with interval arithmetic is applied to the initial boxes so as to check whether or not the corresponding approximate roots are real and to obtain the real root isolation boxes. Moreover, an empirical construction of initial box is provided for speeding-up the computation in practice. Our experiments on many benchmarks show that the new hybrid method is very efficient. The method can find all real roots of any given zero-dimensional nonsingular square polynomial systems provided that the homotopy continuation method can find all complex roots of the equations.

Abstract:Existing algorithms for isolating real solutions of zero-dimensional polynomial systems do not compute the multiplicities of the solutions. In this paper, we define in a natural way the multiplicity of solutions of zero-dimensional triangular polynomial systems and prove that our definition is equivalent to the classical definition of local (intersection) multiplicity. Then we present an effective and complete algorithm for isolating real solutions with multiplicities of zero-dimensional triangular polynomial systems using our definition. The algorithm is based on interval arithmetic and square-free factorization of polynomials with real algebraic coefficients. The computational results on some examples from the literature are presented.

Real root refinements for univariate polynomial equations

Abstract:Real root finding of polynomial equations is a basic problem in computer algebra. This task is usually divided into two parts: isolation and refinement. In this paper, we propose two algorithms LZ1 and LZ2 to refine real roots of univariate polynomial equations. Our algorithms combine Newton's method and the secant method to bound the unique solution in an interval of a monotonic convex isolation (MCI) of a polynomial, and have quadratic and cubic convergence rates, respectively. To avoid the swell of coefficients and speed up the computation, we implement the two algorithms by using the floating-point interval method in Maple15 with the package intpakX. Experiments show that our methods are effective and much faster than the function RefineBox in the software Maple15 on benchmark polynomials.

Abstract:. A new algorithm for real root isolation of univariate polynomials is proposed, which is mainly based on exact interval arithmetic and bisection method. Although exact interval arithmetic is usually supposed to be inefficient, our algorithm is surprisingly fast because the termination condition of our algorithm is different from those of existing algorithms which are mostly based on Descartes’ rule of signs or Vincent’s theorem and we decrease the times of Taylor shifts in some cases. We test our algorithm on a large number of examples from the literature and report the performance.

Abstract:Recent advances in program verification indicate that various verification problems can be reduced to semi-algebraic system (SAS for short) solving. An SAS consists of polynomial equations and polynomial inequalities. Algorithms for quantifier elimination of real closed fields are the general method for those problems. But the general method usually has low efficiency for specific problems. To overcome the bottleneck of program verification with a symbolic approach, one has to combine special techniques with the general method. Based on the work of complete discrimination systems of polynomials [33,31],, we invented new theories and algorithms [32,30,35] for SAS solving and partly implemented them as a real symbolic computation tool in Maple named DISCOVERER. In this paper, we first summarize the results that we have done so far both on SAS-solving and program verification with DISCOVERER, and then discuss the future work in this direction, including SAS-solving itself, termination analysis and invariant generation of programs, and reachability computation of hybrid systems etc.

Abstract:There have been some effective tools for solving (constant/parametric) semi-algebraic systems in Maple's library RegularChains since Maple 13. By using the functions of the library, e.g., RealRootClassfication, one can prove and discover polynomial inequalities. This paper is more or less a user guide on using RealRootClassfication to prove the nonnegativity of polynomials. We show by examples how to use this powerful tool to prove a polynomial is nonnegative under some polynomial inequality and/or equation constraints. Some tricks for using the tool are also provided.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a symbolic-numeric algorithm to count the number of solutions of a zero-dimensional square polynomial system within a local region. We show that the algorithm succeeds under the condition that the region is sufficiently small and well-isolating for a k-fold solution z of the system. In our analysis, we derive a bound on the size of the region that guarantees success. We further argue that this size depends on local parameters such as the norm and multiplicity of z as well as the distances between z and all other solutions. Efficiency of our method stems from the fact that we reduce the problem of counting the roots of the original system to the problem of solving a truncated system of degree k. In particular, if the multiplicity k of z is small compared to the total degrees of the original polynomials, our method considerably improves upon known complete and certified methods. We see a series of applications of our approach. When combined with a numerical solver in the fashion of an a posteriori certification step, we obtain a certified and reliable method for solving polynomial systems while profiting both from the efficiency of the numerical algorithm and the reliability of the symbolic approach. An alternative application results from incorporating our algorithm as inclusion predicate into an elimination method. For the special case of bivariate systems, we experimentally show that this approach leads to a significant improvement over an existing state-of-the-art elimination method.

A Hybrid Procedure for Finding Real Points on a Real Algebraic Set

Abstract:Motivated by the idea of Shen, et al.'s work, which proposed a hybrid procedure for real root isolation of polynomial equations based on homotopy continuation methods and interval analysis, this paper presents a hybrid procedure to compute sample points on each connected component of a real algebraic set by combining a special homotopy method and interval analysis with a better estimate on initial intervals. For a real algebraic set given by a polynomial system, the new method first constructs a square polynomial system which represents the sample points, and then solve this system by a special homotopy continuation method introduced recently by Wang, et al. (2017). For each root returned by the homotopy continuation method, which is a complex approximation of some (complex/real) root of the polynomial system, interval analysis is used to verify whether it is an approximation of a real root and finally get real points on the given real algebraic set. A new estimate on initial intervals is presented which helps compute smaller initial intervals before performing interval iteration and thus saves computation. Experiments show that the new method works pretty well on tested examples.

Abstract:We present a new algorithm for solving the real roots of a bivariate polynomial system $\Sigma=\{f(x,y),g(x,y)\}$ with a finite number of solutions by using a zero-matching method. The method is based on a lower bound for bivariate polynomial system when the system is non-zero. Moreover, the multiplicities of the roots of $\Sigma=0$ can be obtained by a given neighborhood. From this approach, the parallelization of the method arises naturally. By using a multidimensional matching method this principle can be generalized to the multivariate equation systems.

Abstract:We present a new algorithm for finding isolated zeros of a system of real-valued functions in a bounded interval in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It uses the Chebyshev proxy method combined with a mixture of subdivision, reduction methods, and elimination checks that leverage special properties of Chebyshev polynomials. We prove the method has R-quadratic convergence locally near simple zeros of the system. We also analyze the temporal complexity and the numerical stability of the algorithm and provide numerical evidence in dimensions up to three that the method is both fast and accurate on a wide range of problems. The algorithm should also work well in higher dimensions. Our tests show that the algorithm outperforms other standard methods on this problem of finding all real zeros in a bounded domain. Our Python implementation of the algorithm is publicly available.

Abstract:Regular chains and triangular decompositions are fundamental and well-developed tools for describing the complex solutions of polynomial systems. This paper proposes adaptations of these tools focusing on solutions of the real analogue: semi-algebraic systems. We show that any such system can be decomposed into finitely many regular semi-algebraic systems. We propose two specifications of such a decomposition and present corresponding algorithms. Under some assumptions, one type of decomposition can be computed in singly exponential time w.r.t. the number of variables. We implement our algorithms and the experimental results illustrate their effectiveness.

Abstract:We discuss parametric polynomial systems, with algorithms for real root classification and triangular decomposition of semi-algebraic systems as our main applications. We exhibit new results in the theory of border polynomials of parametric semi-algebraic systems: in particular a geometric characterization of its "true boundary" (Definition 1). In order to optimize the corresponding decomposition algorithms, we also propose a technique, that we call relaxation, which can simplify the decomposition process and reduce the number of components in the output. This paper extends our earlier works (Chen et al., 2010, Chen et al., 2011).
