Abstract:We develop a theory of real numbers as rational Cauchy sequences, in which any two of them, $(a_n)$ and $(b_n)$, are equal iff $\lim\,(a_n-b_n)=0$. We need such reals in the Countable Mathematical Analysis ([4]) which allows to use only hereditarily at most countable (HMC) sets.

Abstract:HMC sets are hereditarily at most countable sets. We rework a part of analysis of univariate real functions so that it (substantially) uses only HMC sets and present some applications. 1. By integrating functions $f\colon[u,v]_{\mathbb{Q}}= \{a\in\mathbb{Q}\;|\;u\le a\le v\}\to\mathbb{R}$ we carry out, with only HMC sets, Hilbert's proof of transcendence of $\mathrm{e}$. 2. We give a version of Hilbert's proof based on quasi-formal use of power series. 3. We prove, using only HMC sets, Liouville's theorem that transcendental numbers exist. 4. We construct a uniformly continuous function $f\colon[0,1]_{\mathbb{Q}}\to\mathbb{R}$ satisfying for every $a\in[0,1]_{\mathbb{Q}}$ that $f(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}})=\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}>f(a)$ and $f'(a)=1$ (the value $f(\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}})$ is of the continuous extension of $f$). 5. In conclusion we ask if FLT can be proven by means of only HMC sets.

Formalising Real Numbers in Homotopy Type Theory

Abstract:Cauchy reals can be defined as a quotient of Cauchy sequences of rationals. The limit of a Cauchy sequence of Cauchy reals is defined through lifting it to a sequence of Cauchy sequences of rationals. This lifting requires the axiom of countable choice or excluded middle, neither of which is available in homotopy type theory. To address this, the Univalent Foundations Program uses a higher inductive-inductive type to define the Cauchy reals as the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by the rationals. We generalize this construction to define the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by an arbitrary metric space. This forms a monad in the category of metric spaces with Lipschitz functions. When applied to the rationals it defines the Cauchy reals. Finally, we can use Altenkirch and Danielson (2016)'s partiality monad to define a semi-decision procedure comparing a real number and a rational number. The entire construction has been formalized in the Coq proof assistant. Big in Reverse Mathematics: the uncountability of the real numbers

Abstract:The uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ is one of its most basic properties, known far outside of mathematics. Cantor's 1874 proof of the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ even appears in the very first paper on set theory, i.e. a historical milestone. In this paper, we study the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics (RM for short), in the guise of the following principle: $$\hbox{for a countable set $A\subset \mathbb{R}$, there exists $y\in \mathbb{R}\setminus A$.}$$ An important conceptual observation is that the usual definition of countable set -- based on injections or bijections to $\mathbb{N}$ -- does not seem suitable for the RM-study of mainstream mathematics; we also propose a suitable (equivalent over strong systems) alternative definition of countable set, namely union over $\mathbb{N}$ of finite sets; the latter is known from the literature and closer to how countable sets occur 'in the wild'. We identify a considerable number of theorems that are equivalent to the centred theorem based on our alternative definition. Perhaps surprisingly, our equivalent theorems involve most basic properties of the Riemann integral, regulated or bounded variation functions, Blumberg's theorem, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. Our equivalences are also robust, promoting the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ to the status of 'big' system in RM.

Abstract:It is consistent with constructive set theory (without Countable Choice, clearly) that the Cauchy reals (equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences of rationals) are not Cauchy complete. Related results are also shown, such as that a Cauchy sequence of rationals may not have a modulus of convergence, and that a Cauchy sequence of Cauchy sequences may not converge to a Cauchy sequence, among others.

Abstract:In this article we call a sequence $(a_n)_n$ of elements of a metric space nearly computably Cauchy if for every strictly increasing computable function $r:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$ the sequence $(d(a_{r(n+1)},a_{r(n)}))_n$ converges computably to $0$. We show that there exists a strictly increasing sequence of rational numbers that is nearly computably Cauchy and unbounded. Then we call a real number $\alpha$ nearly computable if there exists a computable sequence $(a_n)_n$ of rational numbers that converges to $\alpha$ and is nearly computably Cauchy. It is clear that every computable real number is nearly computable, and it follows from a result by Downey and LaForte (2002) that there exists a nearly computable and left-computable number that is not computable. We observe that the set of nearly computable real numbers is a real closed field and closed under computable real functions with open domain, but not closed under arbitrary computable real functions. Among other things we strengthen results by Hoyrup (2017) and by Stephan and Wu (2005) by showing that any nearly computable real number that is not computable is weakly $1$-generic (and, therefore, hyperimmune and not Martin-Löf random) and strongly Kurtz random (and, therefore, not $K$-trivial), and we strengthen a result by Downey and LaForte (2002) by showing that no promptly simple set can be Turing reducible to a nearly computable real number.

Connecting real and hyperarithmetical analysis

Abstract:Going back to Kreisel in the Sixties, hyperarithmetical analysis is a cluster of logical systems just beyond arithmetical comprehension. Only recently natural examples of theorems from the mathematical mainstream were identified that fit this category. In this paper, we provide many examples of theorems of real analysis that sit within the range of hyperarithmetical analysis, namely between the higher-order version of $\Sigma_1^1$-AC$_0$ and weak-$\Sigma_1^1$-AC$_0$, working in Kohlenbach's higher-order framework. Our example theorems are based on the Jordan decomposition theorem, unordered sums, metric spaces, and semi-continuous functions. Along the way, we identify a couple of new systems of hyperarithmetical analysis.

Abstract:Erdős proved that any real number can be written as a sum, and a product, of two Liouville numbers. Motivated by these results, we study sumsets of classes of real numbers with prescribed (or bounded) irrationality exponents. We show that such sumsets turn out to be large in general, indeed almost every real number with respect to Lebesgue measure can be written as the sum of two numbers with sufficiently large prescribed irrationality exponents. In fact the Hausdorff dimension of the complement is small, and the result remains true if we impose considerably refined conditions on the orders of rational approximation ("exact approximation" with respect to an approximation function). As an application, we show that in many cases the Hausdorff dimension of Cartesian products of sets with prescribed irrationality exponent exceeds the expected dimension, that is the sum of the single Hausdorff dimensions. We also address their packing dimensions. Similar results hold when restricting to classical missing digit Cantor sets, relative to its natural Cantor measure. In particular, we prove that the subset of numbers with prescribed large irrationality exponent has full packing dimension, i.e. the same packing dimension as the entire Cantor set. This complements some results on the Hausdorff dimension of these sets, which is an extensively studied topic in Diophantine approximation. Our proofs are based on ideas of Erdős, but vastly extend them.

Abstract:Using basic tools of mathematical analysis and elementary probability theory we address several problems on the irrationality of series of distinct unit fractions, $\sum_k 1/a_k$. In particular, we study subseries of the Lambert series $\sum_k 1/(t^k-1)$ and two types of irrationality sequences $(a_k)$ introduced by Paul Erdős and Ronald Graham. Next, we address a question of Erdős, who asked how rapidly a sequence of positive integers $(a_k)$ can grow if both series $\sum_k 1/a_k$ and $\sum_k 1/(a_k+1)$ have rational sums. Our construction of double exponentially growing sequences $(a_k)$ with this property generalizes to any number $d$ of series $\sum_k 1/(a_k+j)$, $j=0,1,2,\ldots,d-1$, and, in particular, also gives a positive answer to a question of Erdős and Ernst Straus on the interior of the set of $d$-tuples of their sums. Finally, we prove the existence of a sequence $(a_k)$ such that all well-defined sums $\sum_k 1/(a_k+t)$, $t\in\mathbb{Z}$, are rational numbers, giving a negative answer to a conjecture by Kenneth Stolarsky.

Our point of view is twofold: (1) We examine what can and cannot be said about Hilbert spaces and operators on them in ZF set theory without any assumptions of Choice axioms, even the CC. (2) We view Hilbert spaces as ``quantized'' sets and obtain some set-theoretic results from associated Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:For regular continued fraction, if a real number [Formula: see text] and its rational approximation [Formula: see text] satisfying [Formula: see text], then, after deleting the last integer of the partial quotients of [Formula: see text], the sequence of the remaining partial quotients is a prefix of that of [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we show that the situation is completely different if we consider the Hurwitz continued fraction expansions of a complex number and its rational approximations. More specifically, we consider the set [Formula: see text] of complex numbers which are well approximated with the given bound [Formula: see text] and have quite different Hurwitz continued fraction expansions from that of their rational approximations. The Hausdorff and packing dimensions of such set are determined. It turns out that its packing dimension is always full for any given approximation bound [Formula: see text] and its Hausdorff dimension is equal to that of the [Formula: see text]-approximable set [Formula: see text] of complex numbers. As a consequence, we also obtain an analogue of the classical Jarník theorem in real case.

Abstract:The proper Class $\bf{No}$ of all Conway's numbers $\cite{l3}$ is considered as a region of investigation. It turns out to be a total ordered Field (i.e., a field whose domain is a proper Class) and this totally, or linear ordered Class, containing the real numbers ${\mathbb R}$ and the ordinal numbers {\bf On}. For any subfield $F$ of $\bf{No}$, i.e., $F$ is a set nor proper class, considered with topology induced by a linear ordering on $F$ a completion $\tilde F$ is constructed; in particular, for $\zeta=\omega^{\omega^\mu}$, $0\leq\mu<\Omega$, and for a specially defined subfield $F={\mathbb P}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$ a complete subfield ${\mathbb R}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$ is defined as $\tilde {\mathbb P}_\zeta$. Fundamental (Cauchy) sequences $(x_\alpha)_{0\leq\alpha<\zeta}$ are considered in a subfield $F\subset {\mathbb P}_\zeta\subset{\bf No}$, where $\zeta$ is the smallest ordinal number which does not belong to $F$, and they are the main instrument in the paper. A fragment of Mathematical Analysis in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$ is given and two of its non-trivial results are presented: every positive number $x\in{\mathbb R}_\zeta$ has a unique $n$-th root in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$, for each positive integer $n$ and every odd-degree polynomial with coefficients in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$ has a root in ${\mathbb R}_\zeta$. Hence so-called fundamental theorem of algebra: the ring ${\mathbb R}_\zeta[i]\stackrel{def}{=}{\mathbb C}_\zeta$ of all numbers of the form $x+iy$ ($x,y\in{\mathbb R}_\zeta$), $i^2=-1$, is an algebraically closed field.

Abstract:In this article, we study some potential theoretical and topological aspects of the generalized Mandelbrot set introduced by Baker and DeMarco. For $\alpha$ real, we study the set of all totally real algebraic parameters $c$ such that $\alpha$ is preperiodic under the iteration of the one-parameter family $f_c(x) = x^2 + c$. We show that when $|\alpha| < 2$ and rational then the set of totally real algebraic parameters $c$ with this property is finite, whereas if $|\alpha| \geq 2$ and rational then this set is countably infinite. As an unexpected consequence of this study, we also show that when $|\alpha| \geq 2$ then parameters $c$ such that $\alpha$ is $f_c$-periodic are necessarily real. As a special case, we classify all totally real algebraic integers $c$ such that $\alpha = \pm1$ is preperiodic.

A Fixed-Point Approach to Non-Commutative Central Limit Theorems

Abstract:We show how the renormalization group approach can be used to prove quantitative central limit theorems (CLTs) in the setting of free, Boolean, bi--free and bi--Boolean independence under finite third moment assumptions. The proofs rely on the construction of a contractive metric over the space of probability measures over $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{R}^2$, which has the appropriate analogue of a Gaussian distribution as a fixed point (for instance, the semi--circle law in the case of free independence). In all cases, this yields a convergence rate of $1/\sqrt{n}$, and we show that this can be improved to $1/n$ in some instances under stronger assumptions.

Abstract:Hyperbolic complete monotonicity property ($\mathrm{HCM}$) is a way to check if a distribution is a generalized gamma ($\mathrm{GGC}$), hence is infinitely divisible. In this work, we illustrate to which extent the Mittag-Leffler functions $E_\alpha, \;\alpha \in (0,2]$, enjoy the $\mathrm{HCM}$ property, and then intervene deeply in the probabilistic context. We prove that, for suitable $\alpha$ and complex numbers $z$, the real and imaginary part of the functions $x\mapsto E_\alpha \big(z x\big)$, are tightly linked to the stable distributions and to the generalized Cauchy kernel.

Abstract:We study the topological, dynamical, and descriptive set theoretic properties of Hurwitz continued fractions. Hurwitz continued fractions associate an infinite sequence of Gaussian integers to every complex number which is not a Gaussian rational. The resulting space of sequences of Gaussian integers $\Omega$ is not closed. By means of an algorithm, we show that $\Omega$ contains a natural subset whose closure $\overline{\mathsf{R}}$ encodes continued fraction expansions of complex numbers which are not Gaussian rationals. We prove that $(\overline{\mathsf{R}}, \sigma)$ is a subshift with a feeble specification property. As an application, we determine the rank in the Borel hierarchy of the set of Hurwitz normal numbers with respect to the complex Gauss measure. We also construct a family of complex transcendental numbers with bounded partial quotients.
