Abstract:Cauchy reals can be defined as a quotient of Cauchy sequences of rationals. The limit of a Cauchy sequence of Cauchy reals is defined through lifting it to a sequence of Cauchy sequences of rationals. This lifting requires the axiom of countable choice or excluded middle, neither of which is available in homotopy type theory. To address this, the Univalent Foundations Program uses a higher inductive-inductive type to define the Cauchy reals as the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by the rationals. We generalize this construction to define the free Cauchy complete metric space generated by an arbitrary metric space. This forms a monad in the category of metric spaces with Lipschitz functions. When applied to the rationals it defines the Cauchy reals. Finally, we can use Altenkirch and Danielson (2016)'s partiality monad to define a semi-decision procedure comparing a real number and a rational number. The entire construction has been formalized in the Coq proof assistant. Abstract:We define a new topos, the Herbrand topos, inspired by the modified realizability topos and our earlier work on Herbrand realizability. We also introduce the category of Herbrand assemblies and characterise these as the double-negation-separated objects in the Herbrand topos. In addition, we show that the category of sets is included as the category of double-negation-sheaves and prove that the inclusion functor preserves and reflects validity of first-order formulas.

Abstract:This paper solves the first problem of the open problems in topos theory posted by William Lawvere, which asks the existence of a Grothendieck topos that has a proper class many quotient topoi. This paper concretely constructs such Grothendieck topoi, including the presheaf topos of the free monoid generated by countably infinite elements $\mathbf{PSh}(M_\omega)$. Utilizing the combinatorics of the classifying topos of the theory of inhabited objects and considering pairing functions, the problem is reduced to making rigid relational structures. This is accomplished by using Kunen's theorem on elementary embeddings in set theory.

Abstract:We develop a theory of real numbers as rational Cauchy sequences, in which any two of them, $(a_n)$ and $(b_n)$, are equal iff $\lim\,(a_n-b_n)=0$. We need such reals in the Countable Mathematical Analysis ([4]) which allows to use only hereditarily at most countable (HMC) sets.

Abstract:We obtain several results concerning the concept of isotypic structures. Namely we prove that any field of finite transcendence degree over a prime subfield is defined by types; then we construct isotypic but not isomorphic structures with countable underlying sets: totally ordered sets, fields, and groups. This answers an old question by B. Plotkin for groups.

Realization of monoids with countable sum

Abstract:For every infinite cardinal number $\kappa$, $\kappa$-monoids and their realization have recently been introduced and studied by Nazemian and Smertnig. A $\kappa$-monoid $H$ has a realization to a ring $R$ if there exists an element $x \in H$ such that $H$ is $\aleph_1 ^{-}$-braided over $\text{add}(\aleph_0 x)$, and $\text{add}(\aleph_0 x)$, as $\aleph_0$-monoid, has a realization to $R$. Furthermore, $H$ has a realization to hereditary rings if there exists an element $x \in H$ such that $H$ is braided over $\text{add}(x)$. These prompt an investigation into when $\aleph_0$-monoids have realizations. In this paper, we discuss the realization of $\aleph_0$-monoids and provide a complete characterization for the realization of two-generated ones in hereditary Von Neumann regular rings.

Abstract:A rank is a notion in descriptive set theory that describes ranks such as the Cantor-Bendixson rank on the set of closed subsets of a Polish space, differentiability ranks on the set of differentiable functions in $C[0,1]$ such as the Kechris-Woodin rank and many other ranks in descriptive set theory and real analysis. The complexity of many natural ranks is $\Pi^1_1$ or $\Sigma^1_2$. We propose to understand the least length of ranks on a set as a measure of its complexity. Therefore, the aim is to understand which lengths such ranks may have. The main result determines the suprema of lengths of countable ranks at the first and second projective levels. Furthermore, we characterise the existence of countable ranks on specific classes of $\Sigma^1_2$ sets. The connections arising between $\Sigma^1_2$ sets with countable ranks on the one hand and $\Sigma^1_2$ Borel sets on the other lead to a conjecture that unifies several results in descriptive set theory such as the Mansfield-Solovay theorem and a recent result of Kanovei and Lyubetsky.

Big in Reverse Mathematics: the uncountability of the real numbers

Abstract:The uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ is one of its most basic properties, known far outside of mathematics. Cantor's 1874 proof of the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ even appears in the very first paper on set theory, i.e. a historical milestone. In this paper, we study the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ in Kohlenbach's higher-order Reverse Mathematics (RM for short), in the guise of the following principle: $$\hbox{for a countable set $A\subset \mathbb{R}$, there exists $y\in \mathbb{R}\setminus A$.}$$ An important conceptual observation is that the usual definition of countable set -- based on injections or bijections to $\mathbb{N}$ -- does not seem suitable for the RM-study of mainstream mathematics; we also propose a suitable (equivalent over strong systems) alternative definition of countable set, namely union over $\mathbb{N}$ of finite sets; the latter is known from the literature and closer to how countable sets occur 'in the wild'. We identify a considerable number of theorems that are equivalent to the centred theorem based on our alternative definition. Perhaps surprisingly, our equivalent theorems involve most basic properties of the Riemann integral, regulated or bounded variation functions, Blumberg's theorem, and Volterra's early work circa 1881. Our equivalences are also robust, promoting the uncountability of $\mathbb{R}$ to the status of 'big' system in RM.

Abstract:We examine a unique construction of the real numbers which proceeds directly from the integers using approximately linear-endomorphisms with finite error, called near-endomorphisms. In this paper, we show that the set of near-endomorphisms forms a complete ordered field isomorphic to the reals. Moreover, we show that there are uncountably many near-endomorphisms without reference to the reals. We then investigate a natural extension of near-endomorphisms, which we call quasi-homomorphisms, to other abelian groups. Extending prior results about the construction of the $p$-adic numbers and the rational adele ring, we find the ring of near-endomorphisms of certain localizations of the integers, and suggest further directions for exploration.

Abstract:It is consistent with constructive set theory (without Countable Choice, clearly) that the Cauchy reals (equivalence classes of Cauchy sequences of rationals) are not Cauchy complete. Related results are also shown, such as that a Cauchy sequence of rationals may not have a modulus of convergence, and that a Cauchy sequence of Cauchy sequences may not converge to a Cauchy sequence, among others.

Abstract:We introduce a notion of real rank zero for inclusions of C$^*$-algebras. After showing that our definition has many equivalent characterisations, we offer a complete description of the commutative case. We provide permanence and K-theoretic properties of inclusions of real rank zero and prove that a large class of full infinite inclusions have real rank zero.

Abstract:The atoms of the Schanuel topos can be described as the pairs $(n,G)$ where $n$ is a finite set and $G$ is a subgroup of $\operatorname{Aut}(n)$. We give a general criterion on an atomic site ensuring that the atoms of the topos of sheaves on that site can be described in a similar fashion. We deduce that these toposes are locally finitely presentable. By applying this to the Malitz-Gregory atomic topos, we obtain a counter-example to the conjecture that every locally finitely presentable topos has enough points. We also work out a combinatorial property satisfied exactly when the sheaves for the atomic topology are the pullback-preserving functors. In this case, the category of atoms is particularly simple to describe.

Abstract:We show that the hypercomplete $\infty$-topos associated with any replete topos is Postnikov complete, positively answering a question of Bhatt and Scholze; this will be deduced from the Milnor sequences for sheaves of spaces on replete topoi that we construct. As a corollary, we generalize a result of Toën on affine stacks.

Abstract:According to the math tea argument, there must be real numbers that we cannot describe or define, because there are uncountably many real numbers, but only countably many definitions. And yet, the existence of pointwise-definable models of set theory, in which every individual is definable without parameters, challenges this conclusion. In this article, I introduce a flexible new method for constructing pointwise-definable models of arithmetic and set theory, showing furthermore that every countable model of Zermelo-Fraenkel ZF set theory and of Peano arithmetic PA has a pointwise-definable end extension. In the arithmetic case, I use the universal algorithm and its $\Sigma_n$ generalizations to build a progressively elementary tower making any desired individual $a_n$ definable at each stage $n$, while preserving these definitions through to the limit model, which can thus be arranged to be pointwise definable. A similar method works in set theory, and one can moreover achieve $V=L$ in the extension or indeed any other suitable theory holding in an inner model of the original model, thereby fulfilling the resurrection phenomenon. For example, every countable model of ZF with an inner model with a measurable cardinal has an end extension to a pointwise-definable model of $\text{ZFC}+V=L[\mu]$.

Abstract:We set the foundations of a theory of Grothendieck $(\infty,2)$-topoi based on the notion of fibrational descent, which axiomatizes both the existence of a classifying object for fibrations internal to an $(\infty,2)$-category as well as the exponentiability of these fibrations. As our main result, we prove a 2-dimensional version of Giraud's theorem which characterizes $(\infty,2)$-topoi as those $(\infty, 2)$-categories that appear as localizations of $\mathfrak{C}\!\operatorname{at}$-valued presheaves in which the localization functor preserves certain partially lax finite limits which we call oriented pullbacks. We develop the basics of a theory of partially lax Kan extensions internal to an $(\infty,2)$-topos, and we show that every $(\infty,2)$-topos admits an internal version of the Yoneda embedding. Our general formalism recovers the theory of categories internal to a $(\infty,1)$-topos (as develop by the second author and Sebastian Wolf) as a full sub-$(\infty,2)$-category of the $(\infty,2)$-category of $(\infty,2)$-topoi. As a technical ingredient, we prove general results on the theory of presentable $(\infty,2)$-categories, including lax cocompletions and 2-dimensional versions of the adjoint functor theorem, which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, a formula for the calculation of the number of right cosets contained in a double coset with respect to a unimodular group over a Dedekind domain is developed, and applications of this formula in the theory of congruence subgroups -- an index formula -- and the theory of abstract Hecke algebras -- a reduction theorem and an algorithm for the explicit calculation of products -- are given.
