Abstract:Spin chemistry has emerged as an interdisciplinary field that focuses on electron spins in molecules and related applications in physics, chemistry, biology, materials science and information science. It will play a crucial role in technological innovations. The chemistry of spins is deeply related to the essence of chemical bonds, chemical catalysis, enzyme catalysis, optical and electromagnetic properties, quantum computation and quantum precision measurements. The related research is intersectional, cutting-edge and has a wide range of application prospects. National Science Review (NSR) recently interviewed Prof. Song Gao to discuss spin chemistry. Prof. Gao is a renowned inorganic chemist and an academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is the president of Sun Yat-sen University and the founder of the Spin-X Institute of South China University of Technology. He is recognized as a leader in coordination chemistry and molecular magnetism, and has strong academic influence. Since 2008, he has served on the International Advisory Committee of International Conference on Molecule-Based Magnets, and organized and chaired its 2010 conference. Prof. Gao's primary research topics include molecular nanomagnets; the relationship between geometric structures, electronic structures and magnetism of molecules; and the spin states and reactivity of molecules.

Abstract:Spintronics is the science and technology of electric control over spin currents in solid-state-based devices. Recent advances have demonstrated a coupling between electronic spin currents in non-magnetic metals and magnons in magnetic insulators. The coupling is due to spin transfer and spin pumping at interfaces between the normal metals and magnetic insulators. In this Chapter, we review these developments and the prospects they raise for electric control of quasi-equilibrium magnon Bose-Einstein condensates and spin superfluidity.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent advancements in single‐molecule spintronics using metal complexes. It uncovers fundamental principles of electron and nuclear spin, their effects, experimental techniques to control spin properties, and the mechanisms behind these phenomena. This review concludes with an exploration of applications and challenges of single‐molecule spin devices, pointing the way for future research directions. Compared with aggregate spin behavior, single‐molecule spin behavior can be accurately understood, controlled, and applied at the level of basic building blocks. The potential of single‐molecule electronic and nuclear spins for monitoring and control represents a beacon of promise for the advancement of molecular spin devices, which are fabricated by connecting a single molecule between two electrodes. Metal complexes, celebrated for their superior magnetic attributes, are widely used in the devices to explore spin effects. Moreover, single‐molecule electrical techniques with high signal‐to‐noise ratio, temporal resolution, and reliability help to understand the spin characteristics. In this review, the focus is on the devices with metal complexes, especially single‐molecule magnets, and systematically present experimental and theoretical state of the art of this field at the single‐molecule level, including the fundamental concepts of the electronic and nuclear spin and their basic spin effects. Then, several experimental methods developed to regulate the spin characteristics of metal complexes at single‐molecule level are introduced, as well as the corresponding intrinsic mechanisms. A brief discussion is provided on the comprehensive applications and the considerable challenges of single‐molecule spin devices in detail, along with a prospect on the potential future directions of this field.

Abstract:Since the appearance of magneto-biology as an intriguing field of Big Biology, the most significant event, which was happened in it, was the discovery of huge isotope effects, when natural magnesium, calcium and zinc ions in the catalytic sites of enzymes were replaced with nuclear spin magnetic ions 25 Mg 2+ , 43 Ca 2+ , and 67 Zn 2+ of their stable isotopes. This discovery elucidated physical sense and the origin of numerous magneto-biological effects; it has illuminated all magneto-biology and introduced it as a respectable science. Now the spin concept and radical pair mechanism are generally accepted and overwhelmingly used to interpret experimentally detected magneto-biological effects. In terms of the radical pair mechanism the DNA repair, Hayflick limit and biological longevity under magnetic control are discussed. It is emphasized that magneto-biology is a means to better understand Big Biology itself.

Abstract:Significance The control of electron spin transport in molecular systems has been receiving lots of attention among different scientific communities because of possible applications in spintronics and understanding of the spin effects in biological systems. Recent experiments have demonstrated that α-helical protein acts as an efficient spin filter and the chiral-induced spin selectivity may be a general phenomenon. However, no spin selectivity was measured in single-stranded DNA above the experimental noise. In the present study, we propose a physical model to rationalize the above phenomena, and provide an unambiguous physical mechanism for spin-selective phenomenon observed in α-helical protein and for the contradictory behaviors between protein and single-stranded DNA. These results may facilitate engineering of chiral-based spintronic devices.

Abstract:Low-dimensional quantum magnetism presents a seemingly unlimited source of rich, intriguing physics. Yet, as realistic experimental representations are hard to come by, the field remains predominantly theoretical. In recent years, artificial spin structures built through manipulation of magnetic atoms in a scanning tunnelling microscope have developed into a promising testing ground for experimental verification of theoretical models. Here we present an overview of available tools and discuss recent achievements as well as future avenues. Moreover, we show new observations on magnetic switching in a bistable bit that can be used to extrapolate information on the magnetisation of the microscope tip.

Magnetization Dynamics of Nanoscale Magnetic Materials: A Perspective

Abstract:Nanomagnets form the building blocks for a gamut of miniaturized energy-efficient devices including data storage, memory, wave-based computing, sensors and biomedical devices. They also offer a span of exotic phenomena and stern challenges. The progress in the magnetization dynamics of single nanomagnets and one- and two-dimensional arrays of nanostructures in the form of dots, antidots, nanoparticles, binary and bicomponent structures and patterned multilayers have been presented. Progress in unconventional and new structures like artificial spin ice and three-dimensional nanomagnets and spin textures like domain walls, vortex and skyrmions have been presented. Furthermore, a huge variety of new topics in the magnetization dynamics of magnetic nanostructures are rapidly emerging. An overview of the steadily evolving topics like spatio-temporal imaging of fast dynamics of nanostructures, dynamics of spin textures, artificial spin ice have been discussed. In addition, dynamics of contemporary and newly transpired magnetic architectures such as nanomagnet arrays with complex basis and symmetry, magnonic quasicrystals, fractals, defect structures, novel three-dimensional structures have been introduced. Effects of various spin-orbit coupling and ensuing spin textures as well as quantum hybrid systems comprising of magnon-photon, magnon-phonon and magnon-magnon coupling, antiferromagnetic nanostructures are rapidly growing and are expected to dominate this research field in the coming years. Finally, associated topics like nutation dynamics and nanomagnet antenna are briefly discussed. Despite showing a great progress, only a small fraction of nanomagnetism and its ancillary topics have been explored so far and huge efforts are envisaged in this evergrowing research area in the generations to come.

Abstract:In this paper, recent experimental progress of the generation, the propagation and the detection of the pure spin currents in organic materials including the organic semiconductors and the organic magnets are explicitly reviewed and discussed revolving around the spin pumping and spin Seebeck techniques, which provides further perspectives to organic spintronics from molecular magnetization dynamics point of view. Growing concentration on the novel information processing technology and low‐cost, flexible materials make the spintronics and organic materials appealing for the future interdisciplinary investigations. Organic spintronics, in this context, has arisen and witnessed great advances during the past two decades owing to the continuous innovative exploitation of the charge‐contained spin polarized current. Albeit with such inspiring facts, charge‐absent spin angular momentum flow, namely pure spin currents (PSCs) are less probed in organic functional solids. In this review, the past exploring journey of PSC phenomenon in organic materials are retrospected, including non‐magnetic semiconductors and molecular magnets. Starting with the basic concepts and the generation mechanism for PSC, the representative experimental observations of PSC in the organic‐based networks are subsequently demonstrated and summarized, by accompanying explicit discussion over the propagating mechanism of net spin itself in the organic media. Finally, future perspectives on PSC in organic materials are illustrated mainly from the material point of view, including single molecule magnets, complexes for the organic ligands framework as well as the lanthanide metal complexes, organic radicals, and the emerging 2D organic magnets.

Abstract:The spin of electrons plays a vital role in chemical reactions and processes, and the excited state generated by the absorption of photons shows abundant spin-related phenomena. However, the importance of electron spin in photochemistry studies has been rarely mentioned or summarized. In this review, we briefly introduce the concept of spin photochemistry based on the spin multiplicity of the excited state, which leads to the observation of various spin-related photophysical properties and photochemical reactivities. Then, we focus on the recent advances in terms of light-induced magnetic properties, excited-state magneto-optical effects and spin-dependent photochemical reactions. The review aims to provide a comprehensive overview to utilize the spin multiplicity of the excited state in manipulating the above photophysical and photochemical processes. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges in the emerging field of spin photochemistry and future opportunities such as smart magnetic materials, optical information technology and spin-enhanced photocatalysis.

Abstract:One possible explanation for magnetosensing in biology, such as avian magnetoreception, is based on the spin dynamics of certain chemical reactions that involve radical pairs. Radical pairs have been suggested to also play a role in anesthesia, hyperactivity, neurogenesis, circadian clock rhythm, microtubule assembly, etc. It thus seems critical to probe the credibility of such models. One way to do so is through isotope effects with different nuclear spins. Here we briefly review the papers involving spin-related isotope effects in biology. We suggest studying isotope effects can be an interesting avenue for quantum biology.

Abstract:The shift towards sustainable energy requires efficient electrochemical conversion technologies, emphasizing the crucial need for robust electrocatalyst design. Recent findings reveal that the efficiency of some electrocatalytic reactions is spin-dependent, with spin configuration dictating performance. Consequently, understanding the spin's role and controlling it in electrocatalysts is important. This review succinctly outlines recent investigations into spin-dependent electrocatalysis, stressing its importance in energy conversion. It begins with an introduction to spin-related features, discusses characterization techniques for identifying spin configurations, and explores strategies for fine-tuning them. At the end, the article provides insights into future research directions, aiming to reveal more unknown fundamentals of spin-dependent electrocatalysis and encourage further exploration in spin-related research and applications.

Abstract:In the face of escalating modern data storage demands and the constraints of Moore's Law, exploring spintronic solutions, particularly the devices based on magnetic skyrmions, has emerged as a promising frontier in scientific research. Since the first experimental observation of skyrmions, topological spin textures have been extensively studied for their great potential as efficient information carriers in spintronic devices. However, significant challenges have emerged alongside this progress. This review aims to synthesize recent advances in skyrmion research while addressing the major issues encountered in the field. Additionally, we summarize current research on promising topological spin structures in addition to skyrmions. Beyond two‐dimensional structures, exploration also extends to one‐dimensional magnetic solitons and three‐dimensional spin textures. In addition, we introduce a diverse array of emerging magnetic materials, including antiferromagnets and two‐dimensional van der Waals magnets, broadening the scope of potential materials hosting topological spin textures. Through a systematic examination of magnetic principles, topological categorization, and the dynamics of spin textures, we offer a comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical advances in the research of topological magnetism. Finally, we summarize both conventional and unconventional applications based on spin textures proposed thus far. This review provides an outlook on future development in applied spintronics. Abstract:The discovery of atomic monolayer magnetic materials has stimulated intense research activities in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials community. The field is growing rapidly and there has been a large class of 2D vdW magnetic compounds with unique properties, which provides an ideal platform to study magnetism in the atomically thin limit. In parallel, based on tunneling magnetoresistance and magneto-optical effect in 2D vdW magnets and their heterostructures, emerging concepts of spintronic and optoelectronic applications such as spin tunnel field-effect transistors and spin-filtering devices are explored. While the magnetic ground state has been extensively investigated, reliable characterization and control of spin dynamics play a crucial role in designing ultrafast spintronic devices. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) allows direct measurements of magnetic excitations, which provides insight into the key parameters of magnetic properties such as exchange interaction, magnetic anisotropy, gyromagnetic ratio, spin-orbit coupling, damping rate, and domain structure. In this review article, we present an overview of the essential progress in probing spin dynamics of 2D vdW magnets using FMR techniques. Given the dynamic nature of this field, we focus mainly on broadband FMR, optical FMR, and spin-torque FMR, and their applications in studying prototypical 2D vdW magnets. We conclude with the recent advances in laboratory- and synchrotron-based FMR techniques and their opportunities to broaden the horizon of research pathways into atomically thin magnets.

Perspectives on Antiferromagnetic Spintronics

Abstract:Although the development of spintronic devices has advanced significantly over the past decade with the use of ferromagnetic materials, the extensive implementation of such devices has been limited by the notable drawbacks of these materials. Antiferromagnets claim to resolve many of these shortcomings leading to faster, smaller, more energy-efficient, and more robust electronics. Antiferromagnets exhibit many desirable properties including zero net magnetization, imperviousness to external magnetic fields, intrinsic high-frequency dynamics with a characteristic precession frequency on the order of terahertz (THz), and the ability to serve as passive exchange-bias materials in multiple magnetoresistance (MR)- based devices. In this Perspective article, we will discuss the fundamental physics of magnetic structures in antiferromagnets and their interactions with external stimuli such as spin current, voltage, and magnons. A discussion on the challenges lying ahead is also provided along with an outlook of future research directions of these systems.
