Abstract:Recently, colloidal nanocrystals attract much attention due to their importance in fundamental research on zero-dimensional structures and great potential in a variety of practical applications. The aim of this research is to investigate fundamental properties of a variety of colloidal nanostructures and explore new interesting phenomena in these colloidal nanostructures. By means of magneto-optical experimental techniques, g-factor, spin dynamics and fine structure of the exciton complex in three types of colloidal nanostructures, including core/shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals, Thoil-capped CdTe NCs and CdSe-based colloidal platelets, were characterized at cryogenic temperatures and in high magnetic fields. A long spin relaxation time was observed in thick-shell CdSe/CdS nanocrystals and mechanisms responsible for different behaviours of exciton spin dynamics observed in thick-shell CdSe/CdS NCs and CdTe NCs were discussed. Additionally, it was found that the Forster resonant energy transfer in ensembles of CdTe colloidal NCs could be enhanced by magnetic field and temperature. Finally, we characterized two types of CdSe-based colloidal platelets which show much smaller bright-dark splitting energy of excitons compared with that in CdSe NCs with similar diameter. This can be explained by the strong decrease of the electron-hole exchange interaction resulting from the reduction of the electron-hole wavefunction overlap in colloidal platelet structures.

Abstract:Abstract Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool to determine the chemical structure of materials. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require complicated structural analysis. Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with ESR has been proven as a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here, we extend this technique to demonstrate ESR on single organic molecules - iron phthalocyanine (FePc) - and investigate the magnetic interactions between a molecular spin and either another molecular or atomic spin. We show that the molecular spin density is not only localized at the central Fe atom, but also distributed to the outer ligands, yielding a strongly anisotropic exchange coupling. Our work opens the door for using molecules in nanoscale ESR studies and promises tuning magnetic interactions between non-localized spins via tailoring ligand field symmetry and strength.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent research progress in the measurement and tuning of the electron spins of alien atoms and molecules adsorbed on well-defined substrates. After a brief introduction to the main experimental techniques employed to study surface electron spins, some well-explored systems consisting of atomic and molecular spin-carriers at surfaces are overviewed from a chemist's viewpoint, focusing on the experimental measurements and chemical modifications of the electron spin states of the alien entities at the surfaces on the atomic/molecular level. Finally, personal perspectives have been provided, aiming at describing some of the remaining issues that need to be addressed in the future and proposing potential applications in surface chemistry.

Abstract:Spintronics is a promising alternative to the conventional silicon transistor-based electronics that are gradually approaching their physical limitations. Ultrathin two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials (2D materials) with controllable spin degrees of freedom are recognized as extremely promising spintronic materials in architectures for the post-Moore era. In this Perspective, we review recent progress on spin-dependent transport behaviors (SDTBs) confined at the 2D scale, which are the mainstream paradigms for spintronic devices. We first present the mechanism and the key factors of SDTBs in 2D nonmagnetic materials-based hybrid devices. Then, some chemical modulation strategies for inducing short-range magnetic order and magneto-electric performance into 2D nonmagnetic materials are discussed. Furthermore, we concentrate on introducing intriguing SDTBs in 2D long-range ferromagnetic materials-based vdW devices. Finally, we highlight the current challenges in the study of spin-dependent transport of 2D modified materials and 2D material-based spintronic devices, in the hope of accelerating their applications.

Abstract:The spin of electrons plays a vital role in chemical reactions and processes, and the excited state generated by the absorption of photons shows abundant spin-related phenomena. However, the importance of electron spin in photochemistry studies has been rarely mentioned or summarized. In this review, we briefly introduce the concept of spin photochemistry based on the spin multiplicity of the excited state, which leads to the observation of various spin-related photophysical properties and photochemical reactivities. Then, we focus on the recent advances in terms of light-induced magnetic properties, excited-state magneto-optical effects and spin-dependent photochemical reactions. The review aims to provide a comprehensive overview to utilize the spin multiplicity of the excited state in manipulating the above photophysical and photochemical processes. Finally, we discuss the existing challenges in the emerging field of spin photochemistry and future opportunities such as smart magnetic materials, optical information technology and spin-enhanced photocatalysis.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent advancements in single‐molecule spintronics using metal complexes. It uncovers fundamental principles of electron and nuclear spin, their effects, experimental techniques to control spin properties, and the mechanisms behind these phenomena. This review concludes with an exploration of applications and challenges of single‐molecule spin devices, pointing the way for future research directions. Compared with aggregate spin behavior, single‐molecule spin behavior can be accurately understood, controlled, and applied at the level of basic building blocks. The potential of single‐molecule electronic and nuclear spins for monitoring and control represents a beacon of promise for the advancement of molecular spin devices, which are fabricated by connecting a single molecule between two electrodes. Metal complexes, celebrated for their superior magnetic attributes, are widely used in the devices to explore spin effects. Moreover, single‐molecule electrical techniques with high signal‐to‐noise ratio, temporal resolution, and reliability help to understand the spin characteristics. In this review, the focus is on the devices with metal complexes, especially single‐molecule magnets, and systematically present experimental and theoretical state of the art of this field at the single‐molecule level, including the fundamental concepts of the electronic and nuclear spin and their basic spin effects. Then, several experimental methods developed to regulate the spin characteristics of metal complexes at single‐molecule level are introduced, as well as the corresponding intrinsic mechanisms. A brief discussion is provided on the comprehensive applications and the considerable challenges of single‐molecule spin devices in detail, along with a prospect on the potential future directions of this field.

Abstract:The discovery of atomic monolayer magnetic materials has stimulated intense research activities in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials community. The field is growing rapidly and there has been a large class of 2D vdW magnetic compounds with unique properties, which provides an ideal platform to study magnetism in the atomically thin limit. In parallel, based on tunneling magnetoresistance and magneto-optical effect in 2D vdW magnets and their heterostructures, emerging concepts of spintronic and optoelectronic applications such as spin tunnel field-effect transistors and spin-filtering devices are explored. While the magnetic ground state has been extensively investigated, reliable characterization and control of spin dynamics play a crucial role in designing ultrafast spintronic devices. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) allows direct measurements of magnetic excitations, which provides insight into the key parameters of magnetic properties such as exchange interaction, magnetic anisotropy, gyromagnetic ratio, spin-orbit coupling, damping rate, and domain structure. In this review article, we present an overview of the essential progress in probing spin dynamics of 2D vdW magnets using FMR techniques. Given the dynamic nature of this field, we focus mainly on broadband FMR, optical FMR, and spin-torque FMR, and their applications in studying prototypical 2D vdW magnets. We conclude with the recent advances in laboratory- and synchrotron-based FMR techniques and their opportunities to broaden the horizon of research pathways into atomically thin magnets.

Abstract:Spin current historically referred to the flow of electrons carrying spin information, in particular since the discovery of giant magnetoresistance in the 1980s. Recently, it has been found that spin current can also be mediated by spin-triplet supercurrent, superconducting quasiparticles, spinons, magnons, spin superfluidity and so on. Here, we review key progress concerning the developing research direction utilizing spin current as a probe of quantum materials. We focus on spin-triplet superconductivity and spin dynamics in the ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures, quantum spin liquids, magnetic phase transitions, magnon-polarons, magnon-polaritons, magnon Bose–Einstein condensates and spin superfluidity. The unique characteristics of spin current as a probe will be fruitful for future investigation of spin-dependent properties and the identification of new quantum materials.
Searches for exotic spin-dependent interactions with spin sensors

Abstract:Numerous theories have postulated the existence of exotic spin-dependent interactions beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Spin-based quantum sensors, which utilize the quantum properties of spins to enhance measurement precision, emerge as powerful tools for probing these exotic interactions. These sensors encompass a wide range of technologies, such as optically pumped magnetometers, atomic comagnetometers, spin masers, nuclear magnetic resonance, spin amplifiers, and nitrogen-vacancy centers. These technologies stand out for their ultrahigh sensitivity, compact tabletop design, and cost-effectiveness, offering complementary approaches to the large-scale particle colliders and astrophysical observations. This article reviews the underlying physical principles of various spin sensors and highlights the recent theoretical and experimental progress in the searches for exotic spin-dependent interactions with these quantum sensors. Investigations covered include the exotic interactions of spins with ultralight dark matter, exotic spin-dependent forces, electric dipole moment, spin-gravity interactions, and among others. Ongoing and forthcoming experiments using advanced spin-based sensors to investigate exotic spin-dependent interactions are discussed.

Single-Ion Anisotropy: An Insight To Complicated Magnetic Molecules

Abstract:Molecular magnetism has been developed by chemists for a few decades. The research focus shifted from magnetic frameworks and clusters to mononuclear molecules from the beginning of this century due to the poor understanding of single-ion anisotropy. In the past decades, huge triumphs on the mononuclear researches have been achieved, while we feel that it is the moment to move to more complicated molecules with the present knowledge. Based on the overview of the theoretical models for the molecular magnetism, some unconventional characterization methods to investigate the magnetic anisotropy are introduced. We discussed the strategies to control the magnetic anisotropy of spin carriers as a hint to understand the magnetic clusters' behavior. More importantly, the researches on the complicated magnetic molecules based on the information of the single-ion anisotropy are summarized. To the end, a few conclusions are provided, as well as the perspectives for the further researches in molecular magnetism with respect to chemistry.

Abstract:In the face of escalating modern data storage demands and the constraints of Moore's Law, exploring spintronic solutions, particularly the devices based on magnetic skyrmions, has emerged as a promising frontier in scientific research. Since the first experimental observation of skyrmions, topological spin textures have been extensively studied for their great potential as efficient information carriers in spintronic devices. However, significant challenges have emerged alongside this progress. This review aims to synthesize recent advances in skyrmion research while addressing the major issues encountered in the field. Additionally, we summarize current research on promising topological spin structures in addition to skyrmions. Beyond two‐dimensional structures, exploration also extends to one‐dimensional magnetic solitons and three‐dimensional spin textures. In addition, we introduce a diverse array of emerging magnetic materials, including antiferromagnets and two‐dimensional van der Waals magnets, broadening the scope of potential materials hosting topological spin textures. Through a systematic examination of magnetic principles, topological categorization, and the dynamics of spin textures, we offer a comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical advances in the research of topological magnetism. Finally, we summarize both conventional and unconventional applications based on spin textures proposed thus far. This review provides an outlook on future development in applied spintronics. Abstract:The adsorbed magnetic molecules with tunable spin states have drawn wide attention for their immense potential in the emerging fields of molecular spintronics and quantum computing. One of the key issues toward their application is the efficient controlling of their spin state. This review briefly summarizes the recent progress in the field of molecular spin state manipulation on surfaces. We focus on the molecular spins originated from the unpaired electrons of which the Kondo effect and spin excitation can be detected by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). Studies of the molecular spin-carriers in three categories are overviewed, i.e., the ones solely composed of main group elements, the ones comprising 3d-metals, and the ones comprising 4f-metals. Several frequently used strategies for tuning molecular spin state are exemplified, including chemical reactions, reversible atomic/molecular chemisorption, and STM-tip manipulations. The summary of the successful case studies of molecular spin state manipulation may not only facilitate the fundamental understanding of molecular magnetism and spintronics but also inspire the design of the molecule-based spintronic devices and materials.
X-ray imaging of spin currents and magnetisation dynamics at the nanoscale

Abstract:Understanding how spins move in time and space is the aim of both fundamental and applied research in modern magnetism. Over the past three decades, research in this field has led to technological advances that have had a major impact on our society, while improving the understanding of the fundamentals of spin physics. However, important questions still remain unanswered, because it is experimentally challenging to directly observe spins and their motion with a combined high spatial and temporal resolution. In this article, we present an overview of the recent advances in X-ray microscopy that allow researchers to directly watch spins move in time and space at the microscopically relevant scales. We discuss scanning X-ray transmission microscopy (STXM) at resonant soft X-ray edges, which is available at most modern synchrotron light sources. This technique measures magnetic contrast through the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) effect at the resonant absorption edges, while focusing the X-ray radiation at the nanometre scale, and using the intrinsic pulsed structure of synchrotron-generated X-rays to create time-resolved images of magnetism at the nanoscale. In particular, we discuss how the presence of spin currents can be detected by imaging spin accumulation, and how the magnetisation dynamics in thin ferromagnetic films can be directly imaged. We discuss how a direct look at the phenomena allows for a deeper understanding of the the physics at play, that is not accessible to other, more indirect techniques. Finally, we present an overview of the exciting opportunities that lie ahead to further understand the fundamentals of novel spin physics, opportunities offered by the appearance of diffraction limited storage rings and free electron lasers.

Abstract:Spintronics is the science and technology of electric control over spin currents in solid-state-based devices. Recent advances have demonstrated a coupling between electronic spin currents in non-magnetic metals and magnons in magnetic insulators. The coupling is due to spin transfer and spin pumping at interfaces between the normal metals and magnetic insulators. In this Chapter, we review these developments and the prospects they raise for electric control of quasi-equilibrium magnon Bose-Einstein condensates and spin superfluidity.

Abstract:Molecular nanomagnets show clear signatures of coherent behavior and have a wide variety of effective low-energy spin Hamiltonians suitable for encoding qubits and implementing spin-based quantum information processing. At the nanoscale, the preferred mechanism for the control of a quantum systems is the application of electric fields, which are strong, can be locally applied, and rapidly switched. In this work, we provide the theoretical tools for identifying molecular nanomagnets suitable for electric control. By group-theoretical symmetry analysis we find that the spin-electric coupling in triangular molecules is governed by the modification of the exchange interaction and is possible even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling. In pentagonal molecules the spin-electric coupling can exist only in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. This kind of coupling is allowed for both s=1/2 and s=3/2 spins at the magnetic centers. Within the Hubbard model, we find a relation between the spin-electric coupling and the properties of the chemical bonds in a molecule, suggesting that the best candidates for strong spin-electric coupling are molecules with nearly degenerate bond orbitals. We also investigate the possible experimental signatures of spin-electric coupling in nuclear magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance spectroscopy, as well as in the thermodynamic measurements of magnetization, electric polarization, and specific heat of the molecules.

Abstract:With the continuous miniaturization of electronic devices and the increasing speed of their operation, solving a series of technical issues caused by high power consumption has reached an unprecedented level of difficulty. Fortunately, magnons (the quanta of spin waves), which are the collective precession of spins in quantum magnetic materials, making it possible to replace the role of electrons in modern information applications. In the process of information transmission, nano-sized spin-wave devices do not transport any physical particles; therefore, the corresponding power consumption is extremely low. This review focuses on the emerging developments of the spin-wave materials, tunable effects, and functional devices applications. In the materials front, we summarize the magnetic properties and preparation characteristics of typical insulating single-crystalline garnet films or metallic alloy films, the development of new spin-wave material system is also introduced. Afterward, we introduce the emerging electric control of spin-wave effects originating from the interface transitions, physical or chemical, among these films including, voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy, magneto-ionic transport, electric spin-torque, and magnon-torque. In the functional devices front, we summarize and elaborate on the low dispassion information processing devices and sensors that are realized based on spin waves.
