Abstract:We are interested in how to best communicate a real valued source to a number of destinations (sinks) over a network with capacity constraints in a collective fidelity metric over all the sinks, a problem which we call joint network-source coding. It is demonstrated that multiple description codes along with proper diversity routing provide a powerful solution to joint network-source coding. A systematic optimization approach is proposed. It consists of optimizing the network routing given a multiple description code and designing optimal multiple description code for the corresponding optimized routes.

Abstract:The physics of the spin structure of the proton is reviewed. The EMC experiment and the follow-up ones have shown that the quark spin carries about 1/4 of the spin of the proton. The suspected large gluon polarization is under intense studies with various experimental tools. Generalized parton distributions probed in deeply-virtual Compton scattering allows reconstruction of quark orbital angular momentum.

Abstract:Spin is a beautiful concept that plays an ever important role in modern physics. In this talk, I start with a discussion of the origin of spin, and then turn to three themes in which spin has been crucial in subatomic physics: a lab to explore physics beyond the standard model, a tool to measure physical observables that are hard to obtain otherwise, a probe to unravel nonperturbative QCD. I conclude with some remarks on a world without spin.

Abstract:Since the first evidence of a global polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in relativistic nuclear collisions in 2017, spin has opened a new window in the field, both at experimental and theoretical level, and an exciting perspective. The current state of the field is reviewed with regard to the theoretical understanding of the data, reporting on the most recent achievements and envisioning possible developments. The intriguing connections of spin physics in relativistic matter with fundamental questions in quantum field theory and applications in the non-relativistic domain are discussed.

Abstract:Author(s): Ji, Xiangdong; Yuan, Feng; Zhao, Yong | Abstract: More than three decades has passed since the European Muon Collaboration published the first surprising result on the spin structure of the proton. Much theoretical and experimental progress has been made in understanding the origins of the proton spin. In this review, we will discuss what we have learned so far, what are still missing, and what we shall expect to learn from the upcoming experiments including JLab 12 GeV and Electron-Ion Collider. In particular, we focus on first principles calculations and experimental measurements of the total gluon helicity $\Delta G$, and quark and gluon orbital angular momenta.

Abstract:Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials possess unique properties, such as rapid dynamic response, resistance to external magnetic disturbances, and the absence of a stray field. AFM materials are important members in the field of spintronics, and generating the spin current in AFM materials is one of the vital topics for AFM spintronics. The spin photovoltaic effect (SPVE) is the spin counterpart of the bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE), where the photocurrent is spin-polarized. This effect can generate spin current in a contactless and ultra-fast way. Recently, SPVE has garnered significant interest due to its potential application in AFM spintronics and rich physical content. In this perspective, the mechanism of SPVE, including the relationship between SPVE and BPVE, and symmetry constraints are reviewed. We also provide an overview of recent progress on SPVE in AFM materials. This perspective also offers a viewpoint on this exciting area of research.

Opportunities at the Frontiers of Spintronics

Abstract:The field of spintronics, or magnetic electronics, is maturing and giving rise to new subfields. These new directions involve the study of collective spin excitations and couplings of the spin system to additional degrees of freedom of a material, as well as metastable phenomena due to perturbations that drive the system far from equilibrium. The interactions lead to possibilities for future applications within the realm of energy-efficient information technologies. Examples discussed herein include research opportunities associated with (i) various spin-orbit couplings, such as spin Hall effects, (ii) couplings to the thermal bath of a system, such as in spin Seebeck effects, (iii) spin-spin couplings, such as via induced and interacting magnon excitations, and (iv) spin-photon couplings, such as in ultrafast magnetization switching due to coherent photon pulses. These four basic frontier areas of research are giving rise to new applied disciplines known as spin orbitronics, spin caloritronics, magnonics, and spin photonics, respectively. These topics are highlighted in order to stimulate interest in the new directions that spintronics research is taking and to identify open issues to pursue.

Abstract:With the miniaturization of electronic devices approaching the physical limit, new electronic devices in the post-Moore Era have attracted tremendous attention. The intrinsic characteristics of electron spin should be considered as a path to achieve much higher efficiency in information storage, transmission, and processing in order to break or bypass the thermal and quantum barriers of traditional devices. Therefore, spintronics is one of the important cornerstones for developing information technology in future. This review is summarized based on the presentations and discussions at the 285th "Shuangqing Forum" organized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). It discusses major issues and challenges in spintronics research and the prospective of next-generation techniques of information storage and computations. Important progress and achievements are highlighted, and key scientific questions and promising areas are suggested for NSFC to fund in the next 5-10 years.

Abstract:Spintronics, since its inception, has mainly focused on ferromagnetic materials for manipulating the spin degree of freedom in addition to the charge degree of freedom, whereas much less attention has been paid to antiferromagnetic materials. Thanks to the advances of micro-nano-fabrication techniques and the electrical control of the Néel order parameter, antiferromagnetic spintronics is booming as a result of abundant room temperature materials, robustness against external fields and dipolar coupling, and rapid dynamics in the terahertz regime. For the purpose of applications of antiferromagnets, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the antiferromagnetic dynamics at the microscopic level. Here, we first review the general form of equations that govern both antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic dynamics. This general form unifies the previous theories in the literature. We also provide a survey for the recent progress related to antiferromagnetic dynamics, including the motion of antiferromagnetic domain walls and skyrmions, the spin pumping and quantum antiferromagnetic spintronics. In particular, open problems in several topics are outlined. Furthermore, we discuss the development of antiferromagnetic quantum magnonics and its potential integration with modern information science and technology.

Abstract:In the face of escalating modern data storage demands and the constraints of Moore's Law, exploring spintronic solutions, particularly the devices based on magnetic skyrmions, has emerged as a promising frontier in scientific research. Since the first experimental observation of skyrmions, topological spin textures have been extensively studied for their great potential as efficient information carriers in spintronic devices. However, significant challenges have emerged alongside this progress. This review aims to synthesize recent advances in skyrmion research while addressing the major issues encountered in the field. Additionally, we summarize current research on promising topological spin structures in addition to skyrmions. Beyond two‐dimensional structures, exploration also extends to one‐dimensional magnetic solitons and three‐dimensional spin textures. In addition, we introduce a diverse array of emerging magnetic materials, including antiferromagnets and two‐dimensional van der Waals magnets, broadening the scope of potential materials hosting topological spin textures. Through a systematic examination of magnetic principles, topological categorization, and the dynamics of spin textures, we offer a comprehensive overview of experimental and theoretical advances in the research of topological magnetism. Finally, we summarize both conventional and unconventional applications based on spin textures proposed thus far. This review provides an outlook on future development in applied spintronics. Abstract:The discovery of atomic monolayer magnetic materials has stimulated intense research activities in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials community. The field is growing rapidly and there has been a large class of 2D vdW magnetic compounds with unique properties, which provides an ideal platform to study magnetism in the atomically thin limit. In parallel, based on tunneling magnetoresistance and magneto-optical effect in 2D vdW magnets and their heterostructures, emerging concepts of spintronic and optoelectronic applications such as spin tunnel field-effect transistors and spin-filtering devices are explored. While the magnetic ground state has been extensively investigated, reliable characterization and control of spin dynamics play a crucial role in designing ultrafast spintronic devices. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) allows direct measurements of magnetic excitations, which provides insight into the key parameters of magnetic properties such as exchange interaction, magnetic anisotropy, gyromagnetic ratio, spin-orbit coupling, damping rate, and domain structure. In this review article, we present an overview of the essential progress in probing spin dynamics of 2D vdW magnets using FMR techniques. Given the dynamic nature of this field, we focus mainly on broadband FMR, optical FMR, and spin-torque FMR, and their applications in studying prototypical 2D vdW magnets. We conclude with the recent advances in laboratory- and synchrotron-based FMR techniques and their opportunities to broaden the horizon of research pathways into atomically thin magnets.

Progress in Ultrafast Spintronics Research

Abstract:Ultrafast spintronics is one of the most promising fields for information processing technology innovation. When compared with traditional electronic devices, new spin-based devices have advantages such as low power consumption, high speed, and nonvolatility. Exploring novel physical phenomena and mechanisms relating to electronic spins significantly promotes the development of next-generation spintronic devices. In this review, we outline a sequence of advances in the fields of ultrafast magnetics and spintronics. First, a quick overview of spintronics and the discovery of ultrafast demagnetization induced by a femtosecond laser is provided. The proposed physical mechanisms and theories of ultrafast spin dynamics are then summarized, including the phenomenological three-temperature model, computations based on the time-dependent density functional theory, the Elliott-Yafet spin-flip mechanism, and the nonlocal superdiffusive spin transport model. Following that, the most recent experimental and theoretical studies on all-optical switching of ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic metals are thoroughly reviewed. Furthermore, the discovery of hot-electron spin transport induced by ultrashort lasers as well as its influence on ultrafast magnetization dynamics, ultrafast spin transfer torque, spin injection into semiconductors, and spin accumulation and dissipation in hot-electron transport are described. The advancements in the optimization and manipulation of spintronics-based terahertz emitters are reviewed and analyzed. Finally, we discuss the current challenges in ultrafast spintronics research as well as possible future studies.

Abstract:Abstract This article reviews the 40+ year old spin-glass field and one of its earliest model interpretations as a spin density wave. Our description is from an experimental phenomenological point of view with emphasis on new spin glass materials and their relation to topical problems and strongly correlated materials in condensed matter physics. We first simply define a spin glass (SG), give its basic ingredients and explain how the spin glasses enter into the statistical mechanics of classical phase transitions. We then consider the four basic experimental properties to solidly characterize canonical spin glass behavior and introduce the early theories and models. Here the spin density wave (SDW) concept is used to explain the difference between a short-range SDW, i.e. a SG and, in contrast, a long-range SDW, i.e. a conventional magnetic phase transition. We continue with the present state of SG, its massive computer simulations and recent proposals of chiral glasses and quantum SG. We then collect and mention the various SG ‘spin-off’s'. A major section uncovers the fashionable unconventional materials that display SG-like freezing and glassy ground states, such as (high temperature) superconductors, heavy fermions, intermetallics and Heuslers, pyrochlor and spinels, oxides and chalogenides and exotics, e.g. quasicrystals. Some conclusions and future directions complete the review.

Spin polarization in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:Polarization has opened a new physics chapter in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Since the first prediction and experimental observation of global spin polarization, a lot of progress has been made in understanding its features, both at experimental and theoretical level. In this paper, we give an overview on the recent advances in this field. The covered topics include a review of measurements of global and local spin polarization of hyperons and the global spin alignment of vector mesons. We account for the basic theoretical framework to describe spin polarization in a relativistic fluid such as the Quark Gluon Plasma, including statistical quantum field theory and local thermodynamic equilibrium, spin hydrodynamics, relativistic kinetic theory with spin and coalescence models.

Abstract:Extensive experimental measurements of spin and azimuthal asymmetries in various processes have stimulated theoretical interest and progress in the studies of the nucleon structure. The interpretation of experimental data in terms of parton distribution functions, generalized to describe transverse momentum and spatial parton distributions, is one of the main remaining challenges of modern nuclear physics. These new parton distribution and fragmentation functions encode the motion and the position of partons and are often referred to as three-dimensional distributions describing the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the nucleon. Understanding of the production mechanism and performing phenomenological studies compatible with factorization theorems using minimal model assumptions are goals of the analysis of the experimental data. HERMES and COMPASS Collaborations and experiments at Jefferson Lab have collected a wealth of polarized and unpolarized Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) data. These data play a crucial role in current understanding of nucleon spin phenomena as they cover a broad kinematical range. The Jefferson Lab 12 GeV upgrade data on polarized and unpolarized SIDIS will have a remarkably higher precision at large parton fractional momentum x compared to the existing data. We argue that both experimental and phenomenological communities will benefit from the development of a comprehensive extraction framework that will facilitate the extraction of the 3D nucleon structure, help understand various assumptions in extraction and data analysis, help to insure the model independence of the experimental data and validate the extracted functions. In this review we present the latest developments in the field of the spin asymmetries with emphasis on observables beyond the leading twist in SIDIS, indispensable for studies of the complex 3D nucleon structure, and discuss different components involved in precision extraction of the 3D partonic distribution and fragmentation functions.
