Abstract:In this paper, the polarization dependent gain (PDG) in Raman fiber amplifiers (RFAs) with multiple pumps is studied thoroughly. A comprehensive model, which takes the random polarization mode dispersion, the nonlinear coupling between the pumps, and the degree of polarization (DOP) of the pumps into account, is proposed. The complex nonlinear and random coupling inside the optical fiber is described by a set of nonlinear stochastic differential equations (SDEs), which enable co-simulation of the polarized part and the depolarized part of the multiple pumps. It is revealed that the average PDG and the PDG standard deviation are linearly proportional to the DOP of the pumps, which agrees with the single mode case. More importantly, when the pump wavelength is far away from the signal amplification range (pump-signal wavelength difference larger than 100 nm), its DOP still affects the PDG of the signal. Such a phenomenon is caused by the fact that the pumps interact with each other and the pump DOP could transfer among the pumps, which could enhance the PDG of the RFA. The findings in the work will have important implications for the design of the optical transmission systems with the multi-pump RFAs.

Abstract:In this paper, Raman induced polarization dependent gain ( PDG) in orthogonally pumped optical parametric amplifiers is investigated. Based on the Manakov Eqs., complete coupled Eqs. are derived and numerically solved. Analytical approximate solutions are derived. The simulation results show that in orthogonally pumped optical parametric amplifiers, the Raman effect between the pump and the signal contributes more prominently to the PDG than that induced by asymmetrical pump depletion.

Abstract:The law of the polarization state of Raman fiber amplifier switch in single-core feedback structures is unknown. In this paper, two kinds of optical paths with single-core feedback structures are constructed, namely the Raman amplified Faraday rotating mirror single-core feedback structure (RFA-FRMOP) and the Raman amplified ordinary flat mirror single-core feedback structure (RFA-RMOP). In the process of optical signal amplification involving Raman fiber amplifiers, the polarization dependent gain (PDG) generated by Raman switches is affected by the polarization state, and RFA-FRMOP shows better stability. Surprisingly, polarization analysis of the RFA-FRMOP structure shows that both the ellipticity angle and the long-axis azimuth of the output feedback structure changed less than that of the signal entering the feedback structure. The consistency of the long-axis azimuth variation is the main characteristic of the RFA-FRMOP structure. It is found that the variation of the azimuth of the long axis of the RFA-FRMOP structure is obviously greater than that of the ellipticity. These conclusions provide a theoretical basis for the polarization dependent application of Raman fiber amplifiers in single-core feedback structures.

Abstract:We optimize the novel configuration of a hybrid fiber amplifier - Raman assisted-fiber-based optical parametric amplifier (R-FOPA),in which the parametric gain and Raman gain profiles are combined to achieve a flat composite gain profile. The pump powers and the fiber length in the hybrid amplifier are effectively optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) scheme. The optimization results indicate that the R-FOPA can achieve a 200-nm flat bandwidth spectrum with the gain of 20 dB and ripple of less than 4 dB.

Abstract:We present an experimental demonstration of polarization-independent performance in a forward and backward-pumped 2nd-order ultralong cavity Raman laser amplifiers with highly polarized pumps. Our findings show that the depolarization of the Stokes component due to gain saturation leads to polarization-insensitive performance in terms of output gain and relative intensity noise in the signal. These results pave the way for the use of individual highly polarized low-RIN semiconductor laser diodes in Raman-amplified optical communications.

Abstract:We numerically analyze and compare effect of polarization mode dispersion on an optimal 40Gb/s RZ bi-directionally pumped all-Raman and EDFA transmission system. Although bit-error-ratio distribution is similar for both systems, Raman amplified transmission system shows a higher tolerance to polarization mode dispersion due to a relatively lower bit-error-ratio base induced only by nonlinear effects.

Abstract:We design a Raman Fiber Amplifier(RFA) pumped by 1435nm and 1470nm wavelength lasers. Heavy GeO2-doped optical fibers are adopted as gain media for the more symmetrical gain curve. The amplifier is designed to be distributed in two fibers to avoid intense power transferring between the two pump lasers when propagating in single fiber. Considering the spontaneous Raman scattering and the fiber loss, the numerical calculation is made to optimize the design of the RFA to get wide bandwidth and flat gain.

Abstract:Fiber Raman amplification (FRA) systems, based on the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect, can effectively amplify the Raman signals with tremendous application potentials. The FRA systems can transmit the pump and signal simultaneously in the same Raman gain fiber, and effectively shift the optical power from the stronger pump light to the initial weaker signal through the nonlinear Raman process. However, there are always several other nonlinear processes co-existing and competing within the same Raman fiber. These nonlinear effects, in particular the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), severely restrict the maximum output power of the FRA systems. Beginning with the general polarization states, the analysis of polarization mixing efficiency for stimulated Raman and Brillouin scatterings in optical fibers is firstly presented. Considering the polarization mixing efficiency and pump depletion effect, the Brillouin suppression effect induced by the polarization rotation under the influence of an external magnetic field in the fiber Raman amplification systems is fully explained. Based on the polarization mixing analysis, a novel technical scheme for Brillouin scattering suppression, utilizing the principle of Faraday rotation effect with an auxiliary magnetic field, is proposed and analyzed. The numerical analysis indicates that such a magnetic-field-induced suppression scheme can achieve an extra 3-dB Brillouin gain suppression without sacrificing the co-existing Raman amplification gain.

Abstract:The polarization dependent gain (PDG) of Brillouin amplification systems is numerically investigated in detail by solving a new model describing the evolution of PDG vector along the fiber with random birefringence. In this model both the modulus and orientation of the PDG vector are considered. By including the temporal distribution of fiber birefringence, the statistical properties of the PDG vector, including its mean value and standard deviation, are presented as function of fiber beat length, input pump power and fiber length, which can be directly applied in practice to estimate the performance of Brillouin amplification systems in term of its polarization dependence. Experimental results on a Brillouin amplification system are also reported to support the validity of our model. The analysis presented here helps to gain insight for the properties of PDG vector in any SBS systems.

Abstract:A broadband two-pump optical parametric amplifier with ultra-flat gain spectra is proposed in a single-section highly nonlinear fiber. By elaborately setting the dispersions and pump wavelength space, a gain over 250nm with 0.02-dB uniformity is obtained. The pump polarizations and fiber length can be changed, achieving polarization-insensitive or higher gain, while the flatness and bandwidth of gain curve remain the same.

Abstract:The theory of two counter-propagating polarized beams interacting in a randomly birefringent fiber via the Kerr and Raman effects is developed and applied to the quantitative description of Raman polarizers in the undepleted regime. Here Raman polarizers, first reported by Martinelli et. al. [Opt. Express. 17, 947 (2009)], are understood as Raman amplifiers operating in the regime in which an initially weak unpolarized beam is converted into an amplified fully polarized beam towards the fiber output. Three parameters are selected for the characterization of a Raman polarizer: the degree of polarization of the outcoming beam, its state of polarization, and its gain. All of these parameters represent quantities that are averaged over all random polarization states of the initially unpolarized signal beam. The presented theory is computer friendly and applicable to virtually all practically relevant situations, including the case of co-propagating beams, and in particular to the undepleted as well as the depleted regimes of the Raman polarizer.

Abstract:The key remaining technological challenge to the realization of further power scaling for high-power fiber laser systems is overcoming the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect. In past years, chirped and tilted fiber Bragg gratings (CTFBGs) have been demonstrated to be a simple and effective way to suppress SRS in high-power fiber amplifiers. However, the weak reflection at the Bragg wavelength could be strongly amplified, which not only limits the power and efficiency but also degrades the beam quality. We report here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, the influence of the residual Bragg reflection of CTFBGs on SRS suppression in high-power fiber laser systems. Two groups of CTFBGs with different Bragg reflection wavelengths are fabricated and used for the comparison experiments. Test results show that the CTFBGs of longer Bragg wavelengths have a better suppression effect, in particular, at a higher power level. By further moving the Bragg wavelength of a CTFBG out of the Raman gain spectral range, a better suppression effect and a promotion in laser efficiency could be achieved, which is very useful for further power scaling.

Abstract:In this letter, the polarization properties of a random fiber laser operating via Raman gain and random distributed feedback owing to Rayleigh scattering are investigated for the first time. Using polarized pump, the partially polarized generation is obtained with a generation spectrum exhibiting discrete narrow spectral features contrary to the smooth spectrum observed for the depolarized pump. The threshold, output power, degree of polarization and the state of polarization (SOP) of the lasing can be significantly influenced by the SOP of the pump. Fine narrow spectral components are also sensitive to the SOP of the pump wave. Furthermore, we found that random lasing’s longitudinal power distributions are different in the case of polarized and depolarized pumping that results in considerable reduction of the generation slope efficiency for the polarized radiation. Our results indicate that polarization effects play an important role on the performance of the random fiber laser. This work improves the understanding of the physics of random lasing in fibers and makes a step forward towards the establishment of the vector model of random fiber lasers.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical analysis and comparison on the performance of multipump gain-flat Raman amplifiers based on triangular photonic crystal fiber and conventional fiber. It is demonstrated that the extra 5.93 dB Raman net gain can be achieved in the L-band when PCF acts as Raman gain medium. The noise performance of the two amplifiers are also calculated and compared. Comparison with the data of published literature was also carried out to verify our analysis. The results showed that PCF is the appropriate candidate for high gain Raman amplifiers.

Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated a novel signal-pump double-pass distributed Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) by using a three-port optical circulator as a reflective mirror. This unique RFA architecture not only doubles the amount of dispersion compensation, but also enhances the pumping efficiency. In comparison with the conventional signal-pump single-pass scheme, the proposed RFA has a 2.0-dB gain improvement and a 3.7-dB equivalent noise figure suppression, measured at 1598 nm. The proposed RFA may find wide applications in long-haul transmission and optical networks, where dispersion compensation is of great concern.
