Abstract:Background: The invention of efficient systems for lignocellulose conversion is essential for economically feasible production of bio-based chemicals and biofuels. One limiting step is highly selective processes to quickly decrystallize the compact cellulose structure for efficient hydrolysis. We evaluated the impact of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and phosphorous acid (PA)-induced swelling of crystalline cellulose on enhancement of enzymatic digestion. Results: In this study, two swelling agents, TFA and PA, are compared and found to be highly efficient for cellulose decrystallization at low temperatures within 1 h. After treatment, the microfibril structure of swollen celluloses was observed to develop distinct microscopic morphology and subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis resulted over 90% cellulose conversion within 24 h. The crystalline cellulose change was determined by reduction of loss of X-ray diffractability, and loss of resistance to enzymatic hydrolysis. NMR results suggest that both TFA and PA efficiently converted most of the crystalline cellulose regions to amorphous regions through cellulose chain relocation that inhibits recrystallization. It was found that the swelling mechanism is different between TFA and PA. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to compare and quantify the cellulose regions transformation by swelling agents. Conclusion: This study shows the low-temperature swelling of different celluloses in TFA and PA reduces recalcitrance of crystalline cellulose to enzymatic hydrolysis. TFA and PA are both ideal candidate swelling agents for a closed system for ease of solvent recovery by either simple distillation or filtration. This study provides potentially useful agents in large-scale deconstruction of biomass.

Abstract:Cellulose is a natural, unbranched, and fibrous homopolymer that is a major component in several agroindustrial residues. The aim of this study was to extract cellulose from oat hulls and then to modify it using a green route to obtain esterified cellulose through reaction with organic acids employing the reactive extrusion process, which is a process that presents some advantages, including low effluent generation, short reaction times, and it is scalable for large scale use. Citric (CA) and succinic (SA) acids were employed as esterifying agents in different concentrations (0, 5, 12.5, and 20%). Modified cellulose samples were characterized by their degree of substitution (DS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (DRX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), wettability, oil and water absorption capacities, and thermal stability. DS of modified samples ranged from 2.28 to 3.00, and FTIR results showed that the esterification occurred in all samples for both acids by observation of important bands at 1720 and 1737 cm−1 for samples modified with CA and SA, respectively. All modified samples presented increased hydrophobicity. The modification did not have an influence on the morphological structure or crystallinity pattern of all samples. This study proved to be possible to modify cellulose using a simple and ecofriendly process based on reactive extrusion with organic acids.

Abstract:Two new water-soluble cellulose derivatives were prepared by a two-step transformation with 1,3-propane sultone, followed by either maleic or succinic anhydride, thereby converting cellulose into a more easily processable form. It was found that the solubility was dependent on both the degree of substitution and the chemical properties of the substituents. The water-soluble cellulose has a molecular weight greater than 100 000 g mol-1 and both the morphology and molecular weight can be tuned by varying the reaction conditions. Furthermore, the flexible, two-step nature of the process allows for expansion of this methodology in order to prepare cellulose analogues for different applications.

Abstract:Cellulose fiber has been modified by mechanical and chemical means in order to improve paper properties, which respond to moisture and temperature. When the cellulose is first refined and then etherified using hydroxypropylation under dry conditions, the paper sheets prepared from the hydroxypropylated cellulose show improved elongation. When the level of hydroxypropylation is high enough, the paper sheets also become transparent. Additionally, the effect of cellulose activation using different mechanical methods has been compared by esterification reactions. It is shown that removal of water is the most crucial step for the esterification reactions while other methods have a lesser impact. The paper sheets prepared from the esterified cellulose fibers show an increase in contact angles and high hydrophobicity.

Abstract:The latest advancements in cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this study. We summarize the characteristics, modifications, applications, and properties of cellulose. Here, we discuss new breakthroughs in modified cellulose that allow for enhanced control. In addition to standard approaches, improvements in different techniques employed for cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this review. The various strategies for synthetic polymers are also discussed. The recent advancements in polymer production allow for more precise control, and make it possible to make functional celluloses with better physical qualities. For sustainability and environmental preservation, the development of cellulose green processing is the most abundant renewable substance in nature. The discovery of cellulose disintegration opens up new possibilities for sustainable techniques. Based on the review of recent scientific literature, we believe that additional chemical units of cellulose solubility should be used. This evaluation will evaluate the sustainability of biomass and processing the greenness for the long term. It appears not only crucial to dissolution, but also to the greenness of any process.

Abstract:Cellulose has attracted high attention due to its advantages of abundant resources, renewable and biodegradable. Modification of natural plant cellulose has become a hot topic worldwide. Conventional chemical modification methods commonly cause great damage to the environment. The current review presents the effects of innovative, eco-friendly and sustainable nonthermal processing technologies on cellulose structure and properties. Typical techniques include high pressure processing, cold plasma, ultrasonic and irradiation treatment. Their superiorities in the modification of cellulose are highlighted, and the advantages and limitations of nonthermal processing technologies for plant cellulose modification are also discussed. Nonthermal processing technologies can improve cellulose functional properties by playing an important role in the chemical bonds of the molecular chains, crystalline regions or amorphous parts through energy or active particles generated in the process, or promoting the crosslinking and graft copolymerization of cellulose molecules. The development of modified cellulose functional materials will have wider applications.

Abstract:<p>Cellulose is one of the most promising fillers used for poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites owing to its natural abundance, complete biodegradability, and superb properties. Improving the compatibility between hydrophilic cellulose and hydrophobic PLA is a hot topic in literature for a long time, wherein surface chemical modification of cellulose have attracted the most attention. In this review, we summarized the research activities of recent five years that focus on the chemical modification strategies of cellulose used in PLA/cellulose composites. Two major classifications are carefully discussed, i.e., the reactions of small molecules modified cellulose such as esterification, oxidation/amidation and silanization, and reactions of polymers modified cellulose including PLA and other polymers. The discussion mainly focuses on the relationship between the structure of grafted small molecule/polymers and mechanical properties of PLA composites and addresses the current common problems that hinder the chemical modified cellulose from developing high-performance PLA/cellulose composites. We hope this review provide some possible inspiration for researchers to develop PLA/cellulose products with industrial value in the future.</p>

Abstract:Nano-cellulose is widely used in the fields of double-hydrophobic interface fabric, high-grade protective clothing, chemical industry and medicine. Although the research of nano-cellulose has received widespread attention, because of its strong intermolecular force, its dispersion in the medium is not ideal. In order to further increase the dispersion of nano-cellulose in the medium, one of the methods used is to weaken the hydrogen bonding between nano-cellulose by chemical route. In this work, nano-cellulose is simply modified by coupling agent in environment-friendly solvent. Different analytical methods are used to verify the successful modification of nano-cellulose. The results show that the dispersibility of the modified nano-cellulose in water is improved, and the thermal stability is enhanced in the range of 300–567℃. It is worth remarking that the transmittance of the modified nano-cellulose in visible light still remains above 85%. This study provides a feasible, simple and environmental-friendly strategy for developing the application of nano-cellulose, especially in the field of photopolymerization, radical polymerization and cross linking reaction.

Abstract:As we passed the 20th anniversary of the publication of the 12 principles of green chemistry, the sustainable modification of cellulose, being the most abundant biobased polymer, is certainly worth considering. Many researchers work on an efficient valorization of this renewable resource due to its manifold and promising application possibilities, but very often the use of non-sustainable approaches (i.e., solvents, reactants and modification approaches) only addresses the renewability aspect of cellulose, while neglecting most or all of the other principles of green chemistry. In this review, we have employed the use of E-factors together with basic toxicity information to compare between various approaches for homogeneous cellulose modification. This approach, though simple and certainly not overarching, can provide a quick and useful first sustainability assessment. Therefore, in order to achieve a truly sustainable modification of cellulose, its renewability combined with mild and efficient reaction protocols is crucial in order to obtain sustainable materials that are capable of reducing the overall negative impact of today's fossil-based polymeric materials.

Abstract:Cellulose nanomaterials are derived from the most abundant biopolymer on earth, and are gaining importance in the shift from oil-based materials to sustainable alternatives. To facilitate this, sustainable methods to modify these renewable nanostructured materials must be explored, as surface modifications are prerequisite for many nanocellulose applications. Here, we present a solvent-free method for the surface modification of cellulose nanocrystals, encompassing mechanochemistry to convert uncharged or charged CNCs to tosylated CNCs, and for the subsequent versatile nucleophilic substitution with amines and esters. Systematic screening of the reaction parameters revealed key variables – milling time, base type and amount, for tosylation to take place during 60 minutes of ball-milling without major changes to CNC morphology and crystallinity. Both step-wise and one-step in situ nucleophilic substitution of the tosyl CNCs was successful with amine and ester modification. Our results demonstrate how fine-tuning the parameters of solvent-free methods can lead to fast and environmentally benign reactions on cellulose nanomaterials while retaining their structure on the nanoscale.

Abstract:<p>Considerable attention has been focused on the application of natural cellulosic materials due to the cost-effectiveness, renewability, and biodegradability of cellulose. However, gaps between cellulose-based and petroleum-based materials still exist. In this study, a green, environmental modification method for cellulose by enzyme-initiated reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) graft polymerization was reported. First, the grafting of acryloyl chloride (AC) provided reaction sites on cellulosic fiber surfaces, followed by the enzymatic RAFT graft polymerization of acrylamide (AM). The grafting of well-controlled polyacrylamide (PAM) chains on the cellulosic material surface was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the controlled grafting ratio was also estimated. The transition of wetting behaviors after the modification of AC and PAM also provided evidence for successful grafting on cellulosic materials. In addition, this method can be well applied for the preparation of various functional cellulosic materials.</p>

Abstract:Cellulose is a biopolymer with numerous applications ranging from food packaging to pharmaceutical formulations. However, the sustainability and use of cellulose materials is hindered by harsh processing conditions and toxic solvents. In recent years, a milder approach to cellulose processing and modification has emerged based on the use of CO2 switchable solvents. They facilitate the dissolution of cellulose through its activation with a base and CO2. Cellulose can then be regenerated in a range of morphologies (fibres, films, gels), or chemically modified in a controlled homogeneous manner. This not only avoids the need for toxic solvents, but prevents the waste associated with traditional heterogeneous cellulose modification. Based on the literature to date, we provide both a guide to the use of CO2 switchable solvents for cellulose dissolution and modification, and a critical analysis of these emerging methodologies for future applications of this important biobased material.

Abstract:Hydrolysis-free heterogeneous modification of cotton cellulose with vinyl sulfone (VS) dyes in non-nucleophilic organic solvents was investigated. Dimethyl sulfoxide was selected to be used in the process based on its superior ability to swell cotton. Dimethylcarbonate was used as a cosolvent to enable dye substantivity adjustment so that dye sorption could be promoted without using inorganic salts. Both solvents are green solvents with excellent environmental health and safety profiles. It was found that the nucleophilic addition of cellulosic hydroxyls to the VS dye required the formation of an activated intermediate of the dye and an amine base, which was distinctive from the general base catalysis observed in conventional wet processing. Diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane was identified as the most effective base for promoting the reaction. The spent liquor from the solvent-based process was confirmed to be free of hydrolyzed dyes, and multicycle dye bath reuse was demonstrated. The process was also found to be generally applicable to vinyl sulfone dyes with consistently good shade build-up and colorfastness. The problems of insufficient swelling and dye fixation commonly associated with nonaqueous processes were solved without compromising the recyclability.

Abstract:The growing bioeconomic demand for lightweight, eco-friendly materials with functional versatility and competitive mechanical properties drives the resurgence of cellulose as a sustainable scaffold for various applications. This review comprehensively scrutinizes current progressions in cellulose functional materials (CFMs), concentrating on their structure-property connections. Significant modification methods, including cross-linking, grafting, and oxidation, are discussed together with preparation techniques categorized by cellulose sources. This review article highlights the extensive usage of modified cellulose in various industries, particularly its potential in optical and toughening applications, membrane production, and intelligent bio-based systems. Prominence is located on low-cost procedures for developing biodegradable polymers and the physical-chemical characteristics essential for biomedical applications. Furthermore, the review explores the role of cellulose derivatives in smart packaging films for food quality monitoring and deep probes into cellulose's mechanical, thermal, and structural characteristics. The multifunctional features of cellulose derivatives highlight their worth in evolving environmental and biomedical engineering applications.

Abstract:As a kind of renewable nanomaterial, nanocellulose displays excellent performances and exhibits wide application potentials. In general, nanocellulose has strong hydrophilicity due to the presence of abundant hydroxyl groups or the hydrophilic functional groups introduced during the preparation process. Although these hydrophilic groups benefit the nanocellulose with great application potential that is used in aqueous media (e.g., rheology modifier, hydrogels), they do hinder the performance of nanocellulose used as reinforcing agents for hydrophobic polymers and reduce the stability of the self-assembled nanostructure (e.g., nanopaper, aerogel) in a high-humidity environment. Thus, this review aims to summarize recent advances in the hydrophobic modification of nanocellulose, mainly in three aspects: physical adsorption, surface chemical modification (e.g., silylation, alkanoylation, esterification), and polymer graft copolymerization. In addition, the current limitations and future prospects of hydrophobic modification of nanocellulose are proposed.
