Abstract:In recent years, fundamental and applied researches on cellulase enzyme have not only generated significant scientific knowledge but also have revealed their enormous potential in biotechnology. Growing attention has been devoted to its bioconversion of biomass into fuel ethanol, considered the cleanest liquid fuel alternative to fossil fuels. Significant advances have been made towards the production and alteration technology of cellulase enzyme. This review simply introduces cellulose and cellulase enzyme, gives a broad overview of the current research status of cellulase enzyme, briefly refers to its applied fields, and lastly summarizes its promising prospects.

Abstract:We have studied the advances made in chemical modification of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and their corresponding applications. Different synthetic methods such as esterification and etherification, cross-linking and grafting techniques parameters, etc., are used in CNCs formation. As CNCs are well studied for their renewable purposes like oxidation, grafting, copolymerization reaction, etc. Their biodegradability is of great advantage as it can easily be modified with other related functional groups giving high stiffness, strength, low density and long life to metals and other materials. Cellulose polymer is mostly used due to its neutrality and its wide applications in furniture, packaging, textile, food medical products, etc. Mankind has found a great deal of benefit from cellulose owing to its many applications over a period of hundreds of years. This review presents a detailed account of pronounced effect of CNCs, revealed during their numerous applications and their potential use in wide ranging fields. The recent research reveals multidimensional properties and great advancements of CNCs made at an industrial level. CNCs also exhibit high efficiency in all application areas, described in detail here.

Abstract:This review paper provides a recent overview of current international research that is being conducted into the functional properties of cellulose as a nanomaterial. A particular emphasis is placed on fundamental and applied research that is being undertaken to generate applications, which are now becoming a real prospect given the developments in the field over the last 20 years. A short introduction covers the context of the work, and definitions of the different forms of cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs) that are most widely studied. We also address the terminology used for CNMs, suggesting a standard way to classify these materials. The reviews are separated out into theme areas, namely healthcare, water purification, biocomposites, and energy. Each section contains a short review of the field within the theme and summarizes recent work being undertaken by the groups represented. Topics that are covered include cellulose nanocrystals for directed growth of tissues, bacterial cellulose in healthcare, nanocellulose for drug delivery, nanocellulose for water purification, nanocellulose for thermoplastic composites, nanocellulose for structurally colored materials, transparent wood biocomposites, supercapacitors and batteries.

Abstract:The latest advancements in cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this study. We summarize the characteristics, modifications, applications, and properties of cellulose. Here, we discuss new breakthroughs in modified cellulose that allow for enhanced control. In addition to standard approaches, improvements in different techniques employed for cellulose and its derivatives are the subject of this review. The various strategies for synthetic polymers are also discussed. The recent advancements in polymer production allow for more precise control, and make it possible to make functional celluloses with better physical qualities. For sustainability and environmental preservation, the development of cellulose green processing is the most abundant renewable substance in nature. The discovery of cellulose disintegration opens up new possibilities for sustainable techniques. Based on the review of recent scientific literature, we believe that additional chemical units of cellulose solubility should be used. This evaluation will evaluate the sustainability of biomass and processing the greenness for the long term. It appears not only crucial to dissolution, but also to the greenness of any process.

Abstract:Cellulose is a natural polymer that has a lot of potentials. Cellulose gained more interest owing to its renewability, non-toxicity, economic value, biodegradability, high mechanical properties, high surface area, and biocompatibility. New sources, new isolation processes, and new treatments are currently under development to satisfy the increasing demand for producing new types of bio-based materials on an industrial scale. This article discusses the fundamentals and latest breakthroughs in cellulose biopolymer materials used in the fabrication of composite films owing to the cellulose forming films. Bio-polymers are finding wide applications due to their intrinsic properties such as low density, low thermal conductivity, corrosion resistance, and ease of manufacturing complex shapes. Cellulose possesses a highly crystallized structure, hence it is insoluble in typical organic solvents. Environmental restrictions are increasingly stringent, which is a key element leading to the growth of studies on this subject. These hydrocolloids have been modified by taking advantage of their valuable features; the mechanical strength and water resistance of cellulose make it being used as a thickener for large-scale applications such as cellulose composite films can extend the shelf life of a product while maintaining its biodegradability. New materials with high values are a hot topic for future research with commercial interest. These composite film potentials are contributing to the bio-economy. Here, the emphasis on the potential application of bio-composites of cellulose in various industries has been discussed.

Abstract:Additive manufacturing, commonly referred to as 3D printing, is an exciting and versatile manufacturing technology that has gained traction and interest in both academic and industrial settings. Polymeric materials are essential components in a majority of the feedstocks used across the various 3D printing technologies. As the environmental ramifications of sole or primary reliance on petrochemicals as a resource for industrial polymers continue to manifest themselves on a global scale, a transition to more sustainable bioderived alternatives could offer solutions. In particular, cellulose is promising due to its global abundance, biodegradability, excellent thermal and mechanical properties, and ability to be chemically modified to suit various applications. Traditionally, native cellulose was incorporated in additive manufacturing applications only as a substrate, filler, or reinforcement for other materials because it does not melt or easily dissolve. Now, the exploration of all-cellulose 3D printed materials is invigorated by new liquid processing strategies involving liquid-like slurries, nanocolloids, and advances in direct cellulose solvents that highlight the versatility and desirable properties of this abundant biorenewable photosynthetic feedstock. This review discusses the progress of all-cellulose 3D printing approaches and the associated challenges, with the purpose of promoting future research and development of this important technology for a more sustainable industrial future.

Abstract:There is an emerging quest for lightweight materials with excellent mechanical properties and economic production, while still being sustainable and functionalizable. They could form the basis of the future bioeconomy for energy and material efficiency. Cellulose has long been recognized as an abundant polymer. Modified celluloses were, in fact, among the first polymers used in technical applications; however, they were later replaced by petroleum-based synthetic polymers. Currently, there is a resurgence of interest to utilize renewable resources, where cellulose is foreseen to make again a major impact, this time in the development of advanced materials. This is because of its availability and properties, as well as economic and sustainable production. Among cellulose-based structures, cellulose nanofibrils and nanocrystals display nanoscale lateral dimensions and lengths ranging from nanometers to micrometers. Their excellent mechanical properties are, in part, due to their crystalline assembly via hydrogen bonds. Owing to their abundant surface hydroxyl groups, they can be easily modified with nanoparticles, (bio)polymers, inorganics, or nanocarbons to form functional fibers, films, bulk matter, and porous aerogels and foams. Here, some of the recent progress in the development of advanced materials within this rapidly growing field is reviewed.

Abstract:Lignocellulosic biomass has gained growing interest as a promising substitute for the production of renewable and sustainable chemicals and fuels as the dwindling fossil-fuel reserves. Pyrolysis without using any chemical reagent is an effective method to depolymerize cellulose into kinds of value-added chemicals. Herein, we summarized recent progress about non-catalytic and catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose into specific chemicals, including levoglucosan, 1-hydroxy-3,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octan-2-one, levoglucosenone, furans, aromatics, and olefins via dehydration, aromatization, and aldol condensation, etc. An analysis and of the optimal conditions of these value-added chemicals by catalytic pyrolysis of cellulose are benefit to develop better production methods. In addition, the potential challenges and future perspectives for the pyrolysis of cellulose to chemicals are also discussed to provide a feasible direction for relevant researchers to advance industrialization.

Abstract:The transformation of lignocellulosic biomass and residues to valuable products is an important area of modern biotechnology. The residues can include industrial and municipal wastes, agricultural residues, forest residues and natural herbaceous plants. They are mostly composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Cellulose being the most abundant biopolymer on earth, it has been identified as an alternative to petroleum-based feedstock to produce platform chemicals. However, the use of cellulose is challenging due to its recalcitrance to dissolution. At present, the catalytic conversion of cellulose and cellulosic materials is studied by various research groups. This review outlines the procedures for the chemo-catalytic conversion of cellulose to help valorize paper wastes into platform chemicals. These platform chemicals include sorbitol, ethylene glycol, gluconic acid, lactic acid, levulinic acid, and hydroxymethylfurfural, among others. The recent advances on the design and the use of novel homogenous and heterogenous catalysts have been reported. Special attention has been given to heterogenous catalysts due to their green status and scale-up potential. Moreover, the potential to recycle and reuse pulp and paper for bioprocessing has also been reviewed. Finally, the current and future market scenarios for these platform chemicals have been discussed. If economically competitive, these building block chemicals could overtake their fossil-based counterparts.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:As the most important skeletal component in plants, the polysaccharide cellulose is an almost inexhaustible polymeric raw material with fascinating structure and properties. Formed by the repeated connection of D-glucose building blocks, the highly functionalized, linear stiff-chain homopolymer is characterized by its hydrophilicity, chirality, biodegradability, broad chemical modifying capacity, and its formation of versatile semicrystalline fiber morphologies. In view of the considerable increase in interdisciplinary cellulose research and product development over the past decade worldwide, this paper assembles the current knowledge in the structure and chemistry of cellulose, and in the development of innovative cellulose esters and ethers for coatings, films, membranes, building materials, drilling techniques, pharmaceuticals, and foodstuffs. New frontiers, including environmentally friendly cellulose fiber technologies, bacterial cellulose biomaterials, and in-vitro syntheses of cellulose are highlighted together with future aims, strategies, and perspectives of cellulose research and its applications.

Abstract:To meet decarbonisation goals and implement a more sustainable circular economy model, the chemical industry needs to transition from fossil to renewable sources of carbon. Current chemical production is dominated by petroleum, where this broadly uniform feedstock is separated using a single, simple process to give a small range of heteroatom-free molecules that are the platform to a myriad of products. In a biorefinery, however, many feedstocks of widely varying composition using markedly different technologies are processed to give one or two of a wide range of bioderived platform molecules. Here, recent publications are used to highlight selection of the most suitable second or third generation feedstocks, converted using integrated, complementary processes to generate multiple products. This approach generates a range of chemicals, more fully using the carbon source of choice in a sustainable manner, generating more value, which together makes the realisation of the biorefinery concept draw ever closer.

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant renewable polymer on Earth and can be obtained from several different sources, such as trees, grass, or biomass residues. However, one of the issues is that not all the fractionation processes are eco-friendly and are essentially based on cooking the lignocellulose feedstock in a harsh chemical mixture, such as NaOH + Na2S, and water, to break loose fibers. In the last few years, new sustainable fractionation processes have been developed that enable the obtaining of cellulose fibers in a more eco-friendly way. As a raw material, cellulose's use is widely known and established in many areas. Additionally, its products/derivatives are recognized to have a far better environmental impact than fossil-based materials. Examples are textiles and packaging, where forest-based fibers may contribute to renewable and biodegradable substitutes for common synthetic materials and plastics. In this review, some of the main structural characteristics and properties of cellulose, recent green extraction methods/strategies, chemical modification, and applications of cellulose derivatives are discussed.

Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant plant biomass component,which is also an important candidate for replacing fossil resource with the aim of sustainable future.In the present article,authors reviewed the catalytic transformation of cellulose into platform compounds,including glucose,hydroxymethylfurfural,levulinic acid and polyols via ionic liquids,solid acids and noble metal catalysts.Moreover,the application and the further transformation of these compounds were also introduced,for instance,the oxidation and reduction of hydroxymethylfurfural,the conversion of levulinic acid into γ-valerolactone,hydrocarbon,1,4-butandiol and methyl tetrahydrofuran,and the catalytic reforming of polyols into liquid fuels.The advances on the transformation of cellulose into platform compounds will shed a new light on the sustainable future in terms of the renewable resource.

Abstract:In recent times, cellulose, an abundant and renewable biopolymer, has attracted considerable interest due to its potential applications in nanotechnology. This review explores the latest developments in cellulose-based nanomaterial synthesis, functionalization, and commercial applications. Beginning with an overview of the diverse sources of cellulose and the methods employed for its isolation and purification, the review delves into the various techniques used for the synthesis of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), highlighting their unique properties and potential applications. Furthermore, the functionalization strategies employed to enhance the properties and tailor the functionalities of cellulose-based nanomaterials were discussed. Abstract:Cellulose is the most abundant bio-inspired polymer derived from biomass with tremendous promises to expedite the sustainability and green transition. The interesting, fascinating, and applicable properties of nanocellulose-based structures including biocompatibility, low cost, high intrinsic strength, and extraordinary mechanical properties have opened new horizons for their advanced and emerging applications. This comprehensive review aimed to highlight different aspects of cellulose nanomaterials, ranging from preparation, classification, surface modification, nanocomposite fabrication, characterization, and their potential applications in various multifunctional, and high-performance products. This work also reviews the recent approaches applied to modify the surface chemistry of nanocellulose through functionalizing its surface hydroxyl groups to impart advanced desirable properties. Also, emerging applications of CNMs including biosensors, electromagnetic shielding, eco-friendly and sustainable packaging, and bio-medical fields are well demonstrated in this review.

Abstract:In a quest to find eco-friendly materials from renewable resources, researchers have focused on cellulose materials, which is the primary reinforcing component of plant cell walls. Nanocellulose is at the forefront of research due to its wide range of sources, biocompatibility, large surface area and tunable surface chemistry. It has gained considerable attention in various industries as a nano-reinforcement for polymer matrices due to its hierarchical structure (medical and healthcare, oil and gas, packaging, paper, board, composites, printed and flexible electronics, 3D printing, aerogels). In this paper, we have reviewed the recent advances in nanocellulose production, physical properties, structural characterization, surface modification strategies, pretreatment methods, applications, limitations and future directions. This review emphasizes the quantification of nanocellulose extraction and applications of the most prevalent areas of nanocellulose research. In view of its increasing and broader applications, the demand for nanocellulose is expected to increase in the future.

Bacterial Cellulose Production within a Circular Economy Framework: Utilizing Organic Waste

Abstract:Bacterial cellulose (BC) has emerged as a sustainable biomaterial with diverse industrial applications. This paper examines BC production through a circular economy framework, focusing on organic waste as a primary feedstock. It compares static and agitated cultivation methods for BC production, highlighting their advantages and limitations. Static cultivation using Gluconacetobacter xylinum yields high-quality cellulose films but is constrained by lower yields and longer incubation times. Agitated cultivation accelerates production but may affect fiber uniformity. This paper emphasizes sustainability by exploring organic waste materials such as coffee grounds, tea leaves, and food scraps as cost-effective nitrogen and carbon sources. These materials not only lower production costs but also support circular economy principles by converting waste into valuable products. BC produced from these waste sources retains key properties, making it suitable for applications in the textile and other industries. In addition, BC production can align with vegan principles, provided that all additives and processing methods are free of animal-derived components. The paper discusses BC's potential to replace synthetic fibers in textiles and reduce environmental impact. Case studies show successful BC integration into textile products. In conclusion, this paper calls for more research to optimize BC production processes and explore new industrial applications. Using organic waste in BC production can help industries adopt sustainable practices, reduce environmental footprints, and create high-value materials.

Abstract:As we passed the 20th anniversary of the publication of the 12 principles of green chemistry, the sustainable modification of cellulose, being the most abundant biobased polymer, is certainly worth considering. Many researchers work on an efficient valorization of this renewable resource due to its manifold and promising application possibilities, but very often the use of non-sustainable approaches (i.e., solvents, reactants and modification approaches) only addresses the renewability aspect of cellulose, while neglecting most or all of the other principles of green chemistry. In this review, we have employed the use of E-factors together with basic toxicity information to compare between various approaches for homogeneous cellulose modification. This approach, though simple and certainly not overarching, can provide a quick and useful first sustainability assessment. Therefore, in order to achieve a truly sustainable modification of cellulose, its renewability combined with mild and efficient reaction protocols is crucial in order to obtain sustainable materials that are capable of reducing the overall negative impact of today's fossil-based polymeric materials.
