Exploratory Study of Readiness for Nursing College Students to Utilize Artificial Intelligence

Abstract:This study investigates the readiness of nursing college students to utilize artificial intelligence (AI). For this purpose, the study conducted analysis by measuring the perceptions, attitudes, abilities, and prospects of nursing college students. An online survey was conducted with 131 students from freshmen~seniors at K University of Health in Gyeongbuk. A 4-point Likert scale was used, and collected data was analyzed with SPSS 23.0. The analysis results of readiness for nursing college students to utilize AI were as follows: first, they were asked whether they agreed on their readiness in terms of perception, and 46.62% said they “agreed,” and 52% said they “did not agree”; second, while 46.43% said they “agreed” on their readiness in terms of abilities, 50.08% said they “did not agree.” Although there were no big differences in opposite reactions to readiness in terms of perceptions and abilities, the nursing college students believed that their readiness was not enough; third, while 78.5% said they “agreed” on their readiness in terms of attitudes to utilize AI, 20.02% said they “did not agree.” These findings indicate that these nursing college students had high preference for the utilization of AI and had no sense of rejection to it; finally, 31.3% said they “agreed” on the prediction that human nurses would be replaced completely or partially with AI in terms of prospects to prepare for the utilization of AI. Of the nursing college students, 83.85% said they “did not agree.” These findings show that they predicted that machines would not be able to replace people in the area of nursing.
