Abstract:Sufficient conditions for the existence of various kinds of subgraphs in a graph have been extensively studied. Recently, Gould (2022) studied the existence of a chorded cycle in a graph form spectral perspectives and proposed a question that "What spectral conditions imply the existence of a chorded cycle in a graph?" Zheng et al. (2023) and Xu et al. (2023) respectively gave the answers to this question by providing the sufficient conditions involving the spectral radius and the signless Laplacian spectral radius for the existence of a chorded cycle in a graph. In this paper, we generalize Xu et al.'s result to for , where is the spectral radius of , D ( G ) and A ( G ) being respectively the adjacency matrix and the diagonal degree matrix of G .

Abstract:What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? This question was asked by R.J. Gould in 2022. We answer three modified versions of Gould's question by giving tight spectral conditions that imply the existence of doubly chorded cycle, a doubly chorded cycle with two chords incident to a vertex, and a doubly chorded cycle on five vertices with two chords incident to one vertex, in a graph, respectively.

Abstract:A chorded cycle is a cycle with at least one chord. Gould asked in [Graphs Comb. 38 (2022) 189] the question: What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? For a graph with fixed size, extremal spectral conditions are given to ensure that a graph contains a chorded cycle and a $(2k-3)$-chorded $(2k+1)$-cycle for $k\ge 2$, respectively, via spectral radius.

Abstract:A chord of a cycle $C$ is an edge joining two non-consecutive vertices of $C$. A cycle $C$ in a graph $G$ is chorded if the vertex set of $C$ induces at least one chord. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph with order $n\geq 6$ and $\rho(G)\geq \rho(K_{2,n-2})$, then $G$ contains a chorded cycle unless $G\cong K_{2,n-2}$. This gives one answer to a question posed by Gould [Results and problems on chorded cycles: A survey, Graphs Combin. 38 (2022) 189].

Abstract:Let G be a graph with n vertices and λn(G) be the least eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix of G. In this paper, we give sharp bounds on the least eigenvalue of graphs without given paths or cycles and determine the extremal graphs. Abstract:Let G be a graph on n ≥ 3 vertices and H be a subgraph of G such that each component of H is a cycle with at most one chord. In this paper we prove that if the minimum degree of G is at least n /2, then G contains a spanning subdivision of H such that only non-chord edges of H are subdivided. This gives a new generalization of the classical result of Dirac on the existence of Hamilton cycles in graphs.

Abstract:Let G be an edge-colored graph. We use e(G) and c(G) to denote the number of edges of G and the number of colors appearing on E(G), respectively. For a vertex v∈V(G), the color neighborhood of v is defined as the set of colors assigned to the edges incident to v. A subgraph of G is rainbow if all of its edges are assigned with distinct colors. The well-known Mantel’s theorem states that a graph G on n vertices contains a triangle if e(G)≥⌊n24⌋+1. Rademacher (1941) [8] showed that G contains at least ⌊n2⌋ triangles under the same condition. Li et al. (2014) proved a rainbow version of Mantel’s theorem: An edge-colored graph G has a rainbow triangle if e(G)+c(G)≥n(n+1)∕2. In this paper, we first characterize all graphs G satisfying e(G)+c(G)≥n(n+1)∕2−1 but containing no rainbow triangles. Motivated by Rademacher’s theorem, we then characterize all graphs G which satisfy e(G)+c(G)≥n(n+1)∕2 but contain only one rainbow triangle. We further obtain two results on color neighborhood conditions for the existence of rainbow short cycles. Our results improve a previous theorem due to Broersma et al. (2005). Moreover, we provide a sufficient condition in terms of color neighborhood for the existence of a specified number of vertex-disjoint rainbow cycles.

Abstract:Let id(v) denote the implicit degree of a vertex v. In this work we prove that: If G is a 2-connected graph with max{id(u),id(v)}≥c/2 for each pair of nonadjacent vertices u and v that are vertices of an induced claw or an induced modified claw of G, then G contains either a Hamilton cycle or a cycle of length at least c. This extends several previous results on the existence of long cycles in graphs.

Abstract:How many edges in an $n$-vertex graph will force the existence of a cycle with as many chords as it has vertices? Almost 30 years ago, Chen, Erdős and Staton considered this question and showed that any $n$-vertex graph with $2n^{3/2}$ edges contains such a cycle. We significantly improve this old bound by showing that $\Omega(n\log^8n)$ edges are enough to guarantee the existence of such a cycle. Our proof exploits a delicate interplay between certain properties of random walks in almost regular expanders. We argue that while the probability that a random walk of certain length in an almost regular expander is self-avoiding is very small, one can still guarantee that it spans many edges (and that it can be closed into a cycle) with large enough probability to ensure that these two events happen simultaneously.

Abstract:In 1990, Hendry conjectured that all Hamiltonian chordal graphs are cycle extendable. After a series of papers confirming the conjecture for a number of graph classes, the conjecture is yet refuted by Lafond and Seamone in 2015. Given that their counterexamples are not strongly chordal graphs and they are all only 2-connected, Lafond and Seamone asked the following two questions: (1) Are Hamiltonian strongly chordal graphs cycle extendable? (2) Is there an integer k such that all k-connected Hamiltonian chordal graphs are cycle extendable? Later, a conjecture stronger than Hendry's is proposed. In this paper, we resolve all these questions in the negative. On the positive side, we add to the list of cycle-extendable graphs two more graph classes, namely, Hamiltonian 4-fan-free chordal graphs, where every induced K-5 - e has true twins, and Hamiltonian {4-FAN, (A) over bar}-free chordal graphs.

Abstract:There is a rich history of studying the existence of cycles in planar graphs. The famous Tutte theorem on the Hamilton cycle states that every 4-connected planar graph contains a Hamilton cycle. Later on, Thomassen (1983), Thomas and Yu (1994) and Sanders (1996) respectively proved that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $n-1, n-2$ and $n-3$. Chen, Fan and Yu (2004) further conjectured that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for $\ell\in\{n,n-1,\ldots,n-25\}$ and they verified that $\ell\in \{n-4, n-5, n-6\}$. When we remove the ``4-connected" condition, how to guarantee the existence of a long cycle in a planar graph? A natural question asks by adding a spectral radius condition: What is the smallest constant $C$ such that for sufficiently large $n$, every graph $G$ of order $n$ with spectral radius greater than $C$ contains a long cycle in a planar graph? In this paper, we give a stronger answer to the above question. Let $G$ be a planar graph with order $n\geq 1.8\times 10^{17}$ and $k\leq \lfloor\log_2(n-3)\rfloor-8$ be a non-negative integer, we show that if $\rho(G)\geq \rho(K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1}))$ then $G$ contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for every $\ell\in \{n-k, n-k-1, \ldots, 3\}$ unless $G\cong K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1})$.

Abstract:In this paper, we give spectral conditions to guarantee the existence of two edge disjoint cycles and two cycles of the same length. These two results can be seen as spectral analogues of Erdős and Posa's size condition and Erdős' classic problem on non existence of two cycles of the same length. By using double leading eigenvectors skill, we further give spectral condition to guarantee the existence of k edge disjoint triangles.

Abstract:For an edge-colored graph, its minimum color degree is the minimum number of distinct colors appearing on the edges incident with a vertex, and its maximum monochromatic degree is the maximum number of edges with the same color incident with a vertex. A cycle in an edge-colored graph is called properly colored if any two consecutive edges of the cycle have distinct colors. We investigate sufficient conditions in terms of the minimum color degree and maximum monochromatic degree for the existence of short properly colored cycles in edge-colored complete graphs. In particular, we obtain sharp results for the existence of properly colored C4's, and we characterize the extremal graphs for several known results on the existence of properly colored triangles. Moreover, we obtain sharp sufficient conditions guaranteeing that every vertex is contained in a properly colored triangle or C4, respectively.

Abstract:In the 1970s, Erdős asked how many edges are needed in a graph on $n$ vertices, to ensure the existence of a cycle of length exactly $n-k$. In this paper, we consider the spectral analog of Erdős' problem. Indeed, the problem of determining tight spectral radius conditions for cycles of length $\ell$ in a graph of order $n$ for each $\ell \in[3,n]$ seems very difficult. We determine tight spectral radius conditions for $C_{\ell}$ where $\ell$ belongs to an interval of the form $[n-\Theta(\sqrt{n}),n]$. As a main tool, we prove a stability result of a theorem due to Woodall, which states that for a graph $G$ of order $n\geq 2k+3$ where $k\geq 0$ is an integer, if $e(G)>\binom{n-k-1}{2}+\binom{k+2}{2}$ then $G$ contains a $C_{\ell}$ for each $\ell\in [3,n-k]$. We prove a tight spectral condition for the circumference of a $2$-connected graph with a given minimum degree, of which the main tool is a stability version of a 1976 conjecture of Woodall on circumference of a $2$-connected graph with a given minimum degree proved by Ma and the second author. We also give a brief survey on this area and point out where we are and our predicament.

Abstract:Let Cℓ be a cycle of length ℓ and Sn,k=Kk∨Kn−k‾, the join graph of a complete graph of order k and an empty graph on n−k vertices, and Sn,k+ be the graph obtained from Sn,k by adding an edge in the independent set of Sn,k. Nikiforov conjectured that for a given integer k≥2, any graph G of sufficiently large order n with spectral radius μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k) (or μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k+)) contains C2k+1 or C2k+2 (or C2k+2), unless G=Sn,k (or G=Sn,k+). In this paper, a weaker version of Nikiforov's conjecture is considered, we prove that for a given integer k≥2, any graph G of sufficiently large order n with spectral radius μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k) (or μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k+)) contains a cycle Cℓ with ℓ≥2k+1 (or Cℓ with ℓ≥2k+2), unless G=Sn,k (or G=Sn,k+). These results also imply a result given by Nikiforov in (2010) [3, Theorem 2].

Abstract:Let G be an (edge-)colored graph. A path (cycle) is called monochromatic if all the edges of it have the same color, and is called heterochromatic if all the edges of it have different colors. In this note, some sufficient conditions for the existence of monochromatic and heterochromatic paths and cycles are obtained. We also propose a conjecture on the existence of paths and cycles with many colors.
Longest cycles and longest chordless cycles in $2$-connected graphs

Abstract:Thomassen's chord conjecture from 1976 states that every longest cycle in a $3$-connected graph has a chord. The circumference $c(G)$ and induced circumference $c'(G)$ of a graph $G$ are the length of its longest cycles and the length of its longest chordless cycles, respectively. In $2017$, Harvey proposed a stronger conjecture: Every $2$-connected graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $3$ has $c(G)\geq c'(G)+2$. This conjecture implies Thomassen's chord conjecture. We observe that wheels are the unique hamiltonian graphs for which the circumference and the induced circumference differ by exactly one. Thus we need only consider non-hamiltonian graphs for Harvey's conjecture. In this paper, we propose a conjecture involving wheels that is equivalent to Harvey's conjecture on non-hamiltonian graphs. A graph is $\ell$-holed if its all holes have length exactly $\ell$. Furthermore, we prove that Harvey's conjecture holds for $\ell$-holed graphs and graphs with a small induced circumference. Consequently, Thomassen's conjecture also holds for this two classes of graphs.
