Abstract:What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? This question was asked by R.J. Gould in 2022. We answer three modified versions of Gould's question by giving tight spectral conditions that imply the existence of doubly chorded cycle, a doubly chorded cycle with two chords incident to a vertex, and a doubly chorded cycle on five vertices with two chords incident to one vertex, in a graph, respectively.

Abstract:A chorded cycle is a cycle with at least one chord. Gould asked in [Graphs Comb. 38 (2022) 189] the question: What spectral conditions imply a graph contains a chorded cycle? For a graph with fixed size, extremal spectral conditions are given to ensure that a graph contains a chorded cycle and a $(2k-3)$-chorded $(2k+1)$-cycle for $k\ge 2$, respectively, via spectral radius.

Abstract:A chord of a cycle $C$ is an edge joining two non-consecutive vertices of $C$. A cycle $C$ in a graph $G$ is chorded if the vertex set of $C$ induces at least one chord. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph with order $n\geq 6$ and $\rho(G)\geq \rho(K_{2,n-2})$, then $G$ contains a chorded cycle unless $G\cong K_{2,n-2}$. This gives one answer to a question posed by Gould [Results and problems on chorded cycles: A survey, Graphs Combin. 38 (2022) 189].

Abstract:Let G be a graph with n vertices and λn(G) be the least eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix of G. In this paper, we give sharp bounds on the least eigenvalue of graphs without given paths or cycles and determine the extremal graphs. This result gives spectral conditions for the existence of specified paths and cycles in graphs.

Abstract:How many edges in an $n$-vertex graph will force the existence of a cycle with as many chords as it has vertices? Almost 30 years ago, Chen, Erdős and Staton considered this question and showed that any $n$-vertex graph with $2n^{3/2}$ edges contains such a cycle. We significantly improve this old bound by showing that $\Omega(n\log^8n)$ edges are enough to guarantee the existence of such a cycle. Our proof exploits a delicate interplay between certain properties of random walks in almost regular expanders. We argue that while the probability that a random walk of certain length in an almost regular expander is self-avoiding is very small, one can still guarantee that it spans many edges (and that it can be closed into a cycle) with large enough probability to ensure that these two events happen simultaneously.

Longest cycles and longest chordless cycles in $2$-connected graphs

Abstract:Thomassen's chord conjecture from 1976 states that every longest cycle in a $3$-connected graph has a chord. The circumference $c(G)$ and induced circumference $c'(G)$ of a graph $G$ are the length of its longest cycles and the length of its longest chordless cycles, respectively. In $2017$, Harvey proposed a stronger conjecture: Every $2$-connected graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $3$ has $c(G)\geq c'(G)+2$. This conjecture implies Thomassen's chord conjecture. We observe that wheels are the unique hamiltonian graphs for which the circumference and the induced circumference differ by exactly one. Thus we need only consider non-hamiltonian graphs for Harvey's conjecture. In this paper, we propose a conjecture involving wheels that is equivalent to Harvey's conjecture on non-hamiltonian graphs. A graph is $\ell$-holed if its all holes have length exactly $\ell$. Furthermore, we prove that Harvey's conjecture holds for $\ell$-holed graphs and graphs with a small induced circumference. Consequently, Thomassen's conjecture also holds for this two classes of graphs.

Long cycles and spectral radii in planar graphs

Abstract:There is a rich history of studying the existence of cycles in planar graphs. The famous Tutte theorem on the Hamilton cycle states that every 4-connected planar graph contains a Hamilton cycle. Later on, Thomassen (1983), Thomas and Yu (1994) and Sanders (1996) respectively proved that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $n-1, n-2$ and $n-3$. Chen, Fan and Yu (2004) further conjectured that every 4-connected planar graph contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for $\ell\in\{n,n-1,\ldots,n-25\}$ and they verified that $\ell\in \{n-4, n-5, n-6\}$. When we remove the ``4-connected" condition, how to guarantee the existence of a long cycle in a planar graph? A natural question asks by adding a spectral radius condition: What is the smallest constant $C$ such that for sufficiently large $n$, every graph $G$ of order $n$ with spectral radius greater than $C$ contains a long cycle in a planar graph? In this paper, we give a stronger answer to the above question. Let $G$ be a planar graph with order $n\geq 1.8\times 10^{17}$ and $k\leq \lfloor\log_2(n-3)\rfloor-8$ be a non-negative integer, we show that if $\rho(G)\geq \rho(K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1}))$ then $G$ contains a cycle of length $\ell$ for every $\ell\in \{n-k, n-k-1, \ldots, 3\}$ unless $G\cong K_2\vee(P_{n-2k-4}\cup 2P_{k+1})$.

Abstract:In this paper, we give spectral conditions to guarantee the existence of two edge disjoint cycles and two cycles of the same length. These two results can be seen as spectral analogues of Erdős and Posa's size condition and Erdős' classic problem on non existence of two cycles of the same length. By using double leading eigenvectors skill, we further give spectral condition to guarantee the existence of k edge disjoint triangles.

Abstract:A hole in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of length at least four. A graph is chordal if it contains no holes. Following McKee and Scheinerman (1993), we define the chordality of a graph $G$ to be the minimum number of chordal graphs on $V(G)$ such that the intersection of their edge sets is equal to $E(G)$. In this paper we study classes of graphs of bounded chordality.

Abstract:A chordless cycle (induced cycle) $C$ of a graph is a cycle without any chord, meaning that there is no edge outside the cycle connecting two vertices of the cycle. A chordless path is defined similarly. In this paper, we consider the problems of enumerating chordless cycles/paths of a given graph $G=(V,E),$ and propose algorithms taking $O(|E|)$ time for each chordless cycle/path. In the existing studies, the problems had not been deeply studied in the theoretical computer science area, and no output polynomial time algorithm has been proposed. Our experiments showed that the computation time of our algorithms is constant per chordless cycle/path for non-dense random graphs and real-world graphs. They also show that the number of chordless cycles is much smaller than the number of cycles. We applied the algorithm to prediction of NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectra, and increased the accuracy of the prediction.

Abstract:For a graph $G$, let $\sigma_{2}(G)$ be the minimum degree sum of two non-adjacent vertices in $G$. A chord of a cycle in a graph $G$ is an edge of $G$ joining two non-consecutive vertices of the cycle. In this paper, we prove the following result, which is an extension of a result of Brandt et al. (J. Graph Theory 24 (1997) 165-173) for large graphs: For positive integers $k$ and $c$, there exists an integer $f(k,c)$ such that, if $G$ is a graph of order $n \ge f(k, c)$ and $\sigma_{2}(G) \ge n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles, each of which has at least $c$ chords.

Abstract:Let $F_{a_1,\dots,a_k}$ be a graph consisting of $k$ cycles of odd length $2a_1+1,\dots, 2a_k+1,$ respectively, which intersect in exactly one common vertex, where $k\geq1$ and $a_1\ge a_2\ge \cdots\ge a_k\ge 1$. In this paper, we present a sharp upper bound for the signless Laplacian spectral radius of all $F_{a_1,\dots,a_k}$-free graphs and characterize all extremal graphs which attain the bound. The stability methods and structure of graphs associated with the eigenvalue are adapted for the proof.

Abstract:We prove various properties on the structure of groups whose power graph is chordal. Nilpotent groups with this property have been classified by Manna, Cameron and Mehatari [The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2021]. Here we classify the finite simple groups with chordal power graph, relative to typical number theoretic oracles. We do so by devising several sufficient conditions for the existence and non-existence of long cycles in power graphs of finite groups. We examine other natural group classes, including special linear, symmetric, generalized dihedral and quaternion groups, and we characterize direct products with chordal power graph. The classification problem is thereby reduced to directly indecomposable groups and we further obtain a list of possible socles. Lastly, we give a general bound on the length of an induced path in chordal power graphs, providing another potential road to advance the classification beyond simple groups.

Abstract:The signless Laplacian spectral radius of a graph $G$, denoted by $q(G)$, is the largest eigenvalue of its signless Laplacian matrix. In this paper, we investigate extremal signless Laplacian spectral radius for graphs without short cycles or long cycles. Let $\mathcal{G}(m,g)$ be the family of graphs on $m$ edges with girth $g$ and $\mathcal{H}(m,c)$ be the family of graphs on $m$ edges with circumference $c$. More precisely, we obtain the unique extremal graph with maximal $q(G)$ in $\mathcal{G}(m,g)$ and $\mathcal{H}(m,c)$, respectively.

Abstract:A common task in phylogenetics is to find an evolutionary tree representing proximity relationships between species. This motivates the notion of leaf powers: a graph G = (V, E) is a leaf power if there exist a tree T on leafset V and a threshold k such that uv is an edge if and only if the distance between u and v in T is at most k. Characterizing leaf powers is a challenging open problem, along with determining the complexity of their recognition. This is in part due to the fact that few graphs are known to not be leaf powers, as such graphs are difficult to construct. Recently, Nevries and Rosenke asked if leaf powers could be characterized by strong chordality and a finite set of forbidden subgraphs. In this paper, we provide a negative answer to this question, by exhibiting an infinite family \G of (minimal) strongly chordal graphs that are not leaf powers. During the process, we establish a connection between leaf powers, alternating cycles and quartet compatibility. We also show that deciding if a chordal graph is \G-free is NP-complete, which may provide insight on the complexity of the leaf power recognition problem.
Large Cycles in Graphs Around Conjectures of Bondy and Jung -- Modifications and Sharpness

Abstract:A number of new sufficient conditions for generalized cycles (large cycles including Hamilton and dominating cycles as special cases) in an arbitrary $k$-connected graph $(k=1,2,...)$ and new lower bounds for the circumference (the length of a longest cycle) are derived, inspiring a number of modifications of famous conjectures of Bondy (1980) and Jung (2001). All results (both old and new) are shown to be best possible in a sense based on three types of sharpness indicating the intervals in which the result is sharp and the intervals in which the result can be further improved. In addition, the presented modifications cannot be derived directly from Bondy's and Jung's conjectures as special cases.

Abstract:Let Cℓ be a cycle of length ℓ and Sn,k=Kk∨Kn−k‾, the join graph of a complete graph of order k and an empty graph on n−k vertices, and Sn,k+ be the graph obtained from Sn,k by adding an edge in the independent set of Sn,k. Nikiforov conjectured that for a given integer k≥2, any graph G of sufficiently large order n with spectral radius μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k) (or μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k+)) contains C2k+1 or C2k+2 (or C2k+2), unless G=Sn,k (or G=Sn,k+). In this paper, a weaker version of Nikiforov's conjecture is considered, we prove that for a given integer k≥2, any graph G of sufficiently large order n with spectral radius μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k) (or μ(G)≥μ(Sn,k+)) contains a cycle Cℓ with ℓ≥2k+1 (or Cℓ with ℓ≥2k+2), unless G=Sn,k (or G=Sn,k+). These results also imply a result given by Nikiforov in (2010) [3, Theorem 2].
