Abstract:Inspired by the activities of P-450 enzyme and Rieske oxygenases in nature, in which the high-valent Fe-oxo complexes play a key role for oxidation of alkanes, the oxidation process of methane by the high-valent iron oxide cation [FeO2]+ has been explored by using Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry complemented by high-level quantum chemical calculations. Abstract:Methane is the major component in natural gas and flares wastefully at remote sites since the collection and use are not economical. The direct conversion of methane into liquid fuels such as methanol has been identified as a fruitful solution to this issue. Herein, density functional theory calculations and microkinetic studies were employed on 3d late-transition-metal atom (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu)-loaded graphyne as catalysts for methane-to-methanol conversion. Single metal atoms showed decent stability at pores of graphyne. The oxidant used for this work was abundant O2 instead of high-cost H2O2 or N2O. This systematic study revealed that both iron and cobalt single atoms dispersed at adjoining pores of graphyne are capable of forming catalytically active metal–oxygen (M–O) moieties upon dissociative adsorption of O2. Further, the Co–O moiety loaded on graphyne demonstrated reasonable catalytic activity for methane-to-methanol conversion with sufficient selectivity. Interestingly, dispersed single metal atoms on graphyne support were able to mimic the enzymatic formation of catalytically active M–O moieties. Moreover, it is further noticed that methane activation and methanol production kinetics are strongly correlated with the strength of the metal–oxygen bond.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to high-value-added chemicals is a major challenge in catalysis, which usually requires high-energy input to overcome the reaction barrier. We report that graphene-confined single Fe atoms can be used as an efficient non-precious catalyst to directly convert methane to C1 oxygenated products at room temperature. A series of graphene-confined 3d transition metals (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) were screened, yet only single Fe atoms could catalyze the methane conversion. Combining in operando time-of-flight mass spectrometry, C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance, and density functional theory calculations, we found that methane conversion proceeds on the O-FeN4-O active site along a radical pathway to produce CH3OH and CH3OOH first, and then the generated CH3OH can be further catalyzed to form HOCH2OOH and HCOOH at room temperature.

Abstract:Direct methane conversion to value-added oxygenate products is an important approach for the effective utilization of CH 4 . However, selective C─H bond activation of CH 4 remains challenging. Herein, we investigated the methane-to-methanol conversion mechanism on MN 4 -embedded graphene (M = V, Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) via density functional theory computations. We found that the Cu@N 4 graphene and Ni@N 4 graphene catalysts showed an outstanding C─H bond activation with low barrier energy of 0.45 and 0.28 eV, respectively. In addition, a detailed investigation of the electronic proprieties of the metal site, the CH 3 intermediate adsorption energy and C─H bond cleavage barrier energy demonstrates that the d-band center of metal can be a descriptor for C─H bond cleavage activity and reveal a thermodynamic-kinetic relationship: thus, the high affinity to CH 3 intermediate led to facile activation of C─H bond. Overall, this work provides a better understanding of graphene-supported single metal atom activity and selectivity toward methane oxidation, facilitating the design and fabrication of new 2D materials supported by single-atom catalysts for selective methane conversion.

Abstract:Iron and vanadate modified phosphotungstate was fabricated by Fe salt and vanadate incorporating into H3PW12O40. Its morphology, composition and structure were determined by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR and XPS. The catalytic performance of the prepared composite for selective oxidation of methanol to dimethoxymethane using molecular oxygen as oxidant was evaluated. A detail study on influence of key reaction parameters, involving the calcination temperature of the catalyst during the preparation, reaction time, temperature and pressure, and flow rate of O-2, methanol and N-2 on the reactivity and selectivity was optimized. The results showed that the composite was active and highly selective for methanol oxidation, giving ca. 70% conversion of methanol and > 96% selectivity to DMM. The adsorption behaviour of methanol on surface of the catalyst or various components composed of the catalyst was investigated by in situ DRIFTS technique to identify the active sites and further considering reaction mechanism. Moreover, the operating lifetime and stability of the catalyst was also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract We propose possible theoretical reaction paths for the conversion of methane to methanol catalyzed by FeO + . The geometric and electronic structures for the reactant, product, intermediates, and transition states were calculated and analyzed in detail by means of a hybrid Hartree–Fock/density functional method. Sextet and quartet spin states were taken into consideration in the analysis of the reaction paths. The conversion of methane to methanol was shown to proceed through basic concerted hydrogen‐ and methyl‐shift reactions. A fragment molecular orbital analysis for the formation of the reactant complex, OFe + –CH 4 , which plays an important role in the initial stage of methane activation, was carried out in order to understand the nature of the interesting Fe–C bond. The five‐coordinate methane in the reactant complex was calculated to have a C 3 v ‐type geometry. Each reaction path presented in this paper includes an important insertion species, HO–Fe + –CH 3 or H–Fe + –OCH 3 , and two transition states. Thus, there are several kinds of reaction paths, if the high‐spin sextet and low‐spin quartet states are taken into consideration. A reaction towards the hydroxy intermediate, HO–Fe + –CH 3 , was found to be more favorable in both the sextet and quartet spin states from the viewpoint of activation energy, and this intermediate is extremely stable. It was found from intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) analyses that two basic reactions coexist, namely, hydrogen or methyl migration between the reactant and the methoxy intermediate, H–Fe + –OCH 3 . This transition state is interesting, because the two transition states resulting from C–H bond cleavage and methyl migration are located in the same region of space on the potential energy surfaces. IRCs are partially shown for the complicated first halves of the total reaction paths. The two different possible reaction paths for methane to methanol conversion catalyzed by FeO + are theoretically analyzed in detail. Abstract:Direct transformation of methane into methanol with high selectivity under mild conditions is one of the holy grails in catalysis. The major challenges arise from the high stability of the primary C-H bonds and the facile overoxidation of methanol. Among the numerous catalytic materials applied, Cu/Fe-containing zeolite catalysts have garnered considerable efforts and intensive investigation due to their significant advantages and distinctive potential in direct and selective oxidation of methane into methanol. In this Prospect, we present the recent progress of the application of Cu/Fe-containing zeolites as catalysts for the direct oxidation of methane into methanol. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art ex / in situ characterization techniques applied to understand the intrinsic active sites and reaction mechanisms for Cu/Fe-containing zeolites are also highlighted. Finally, the open challenges and opportunities regarding rational design of catalysts, the development of correlative in situ / operando characterization technologies and the feasible approaches by coupling with external energy resources or with other promising C-C coupling processes, are examined for inspiring future directions.

Abstract:Abstract Selective conversion of methane (CH 4 ) into value-added chemicals represents a grand challenge for the efficient utilization of rising hydrocarbon sources. We report here dimeric copper centers supported on graphitic carbon nitride (denoted as Cu 2 @C 3 N 4 ) as advanced catalysts for CH 4 partial oxidation. The copper-dimer catalysts demonstrate high selectivity for partial oxidation of methane under both thermo- and photocatalytic reaction conditions, with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and oxygen (O 2 ) being used as the oxidizer, respectively. In particular, the photocatalytic oxidation of CH 4 with O 2 achieves >10% conversion, and >98% selectivity toward methyl oxygenates and a mass-specific activity of 1399.3 mmol g Cu −1 h −1 . Mechanistic studies reveal that the high reactivity of Cu 2 @C 3 N 4 can be ascribed to symphonic mechanisms among the bridging oxygen, the two copper sites and the semiconducting C 3 N 4 substrate, which do not only facilitate the heterolytic scission of C-H bond, but also promotes H 2 O 2 and O 2 activation in thermo- and photocatalysis, respectively.

Abstract:This study examines the performance of two metal oxide species in oxidizing ultra low concentration of methane (below 1% in volume). The focus on low methane concentrations are driven by its practical importance in applications such as abatement of ventilation air methane (VAM) in mining operations. Two mixed metal oxides, Fe2O3/Al2O3 and CuO/SiO2, were selected as oxygen carriers and prepared using dry impregnation method. The metal oxide loading contents are found to be 45wt% and 48wt%, respectively. The redox reactivity of the selected oxygen carriers were studied at various methane concentrations (i.e., 0.1%, 0.5% and 1% in volume) and temperatures between 873K and 1073K using a thermogravimetric analyzer. At low methane concentrations and low temperatures (below 1073K) the conversion of Fe2O3 to Fe3O4 showed higher reduction reactivity than the reduction of CuO to Cu. The redox reactivity of Fe2O3/Al2O3 was also found to be quite stable even after 60 redox cycles at 1073K. The respective weight percentages for oxidation and reduction were found to be 100% and 96.67%, corresponding to a full oxidized state Fe2O3 and a reduced state between Fe3O4 and FeO respectively. Moreover, the results for the global reactivity of reduction and oxidation (calculated at X=0.5) showed that the reduction rates were temperature and concentration dependent, varying from 0.14%/s to 2.2%/s over the range of temperatures and methane concentrations of interest. The oxidation rates were much higher than their reduction counterpart. The values varied from 8.95%/s at 873K to 10.65% at 1073K.

Abstract:The direct conversion of methane to methanol has attracted a great deal of attention for nearly a century since it was rst found possible in 1902, and it is still a challenging task. This review article describes recent advancements in the direct partial oxidation of methane to methanol. The history of direct oxidation of methane and the diculties encountered in the partial oxidation of methane to methanol are briey summarized. Recently reported developments in gas-phase homogeneous oxidation, heterogeneous catalytic oxidation and liquid phase homogeneous catalytic oxidation of methane are reviewed.

Abstract:Studies on direct gas-phase partial oxidation of methane to methanol were carried out in a specially designed reactor. A comparatively high yield of methanol was obtained over a wide temperature range. When the O-2 in the feed gas was depleted, the reaction would quickly terminate and the secondary reaction of the produced methanol would not take place significantly. The total feed gas flow rate had little effect on methanol yield while the pressure was an important influencing factor.

Abstract:Catalytically converting CH4 to chemicals and fuels is of paramount importance but remains a major challenge to simultaneously obtain high activity and selectivity. Here, we report Cu1/ZSM-5 single atom catalyst is highly active (C1 oxygenates productivity of 4800 μmol⋅gcat−1 at 50 °C and 12,000 μmol⋅gcat-1 at 70 °C within 30 min) and selective (C1 oxygenates selectivity of 99 % at 50 °C) for direct CH4 oxidation, comparable to most of those state-of-the-art noble metal catalysts. The combined DFT calculation, electronic microscope, X-ray absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance results confirm that each isolated Cu atom stabilized by four O moieties on the ZSM-5 support possesses uniform Cu1-O4 entity as active site and preferentially activates CH4 instead of CH3OH that is advantageous for highly selective C1 oxygenates production, especially for methanol. Our molecular-level finding on the atomic structure of Cu active site paves the way to design better catalysts for methane conversion.

Abstract:Direct and selective oxidation of CH4 with dioxygen to methanol is a "dream reaction" in modern catalysis yet remains a great challenge. Here, we report that TiO2 loaded with dual cocatalysts, that is, nanometals and cobalt oxide (CoOx) nanoclusters, is capable of selectively catalyzing CH4 to CH3OH at room temperature under photoexcitation using abundant and inexpensive O2 as an oxidant. The best activity for the formation of the primary products, CH3OOH and CH3OH, is up to 50.8 μmol for 2 h with 95% selectivity. Mechanistic studies elucidate that the superior activity and selectivity result from the synergistic effect of nanometals and CoOx. Nanometals enhance CH4 conversion by promoting the separation of the photoexcited electron and the reduction of O2. The CoOx mediates a mild CH4 oxidation process by suppressing the formation of highly oxidative •OH radicals that can further oxidize CH3OH to HCHO and CO2, thereby preserving a high selectivity toward oxygenated products. Abstract:Based on first principles density functional theory calculations we explore the energetics of the conversion of carbon mono and dioxide to methane over graphene oxide surfaces. Similar to the recently discovered hydration of various organic species over this catalyst, the transfer of hydrogen atoms from hydroxyl groups of graphene oxide provide a step by step transformation hydrogenation of carbon oxides. Estimated yields of modeled reactions at room temperature are about 0.01% for the carbon mono and dioxide. For the modeling of graphene oxide/metal oxide composites, calculations in the presence of MO_2 (where M = V, Cr, Mn, Fe) have been performed. Results of these calculations demonstrate significant decreases of the energy costs and increases of reaction yields to 0.07%, which is comparable to the efficiency of these reactions over platinum and ruthenium-based photocatalysts. Increasing the temperature to the value 100C should provide the total conversion of carbon mono and dioxides.
Study on Methane Conversion over WOx/Co-Fe-Mo-O Catalysts

Abstract:A series of Co-Fe-Mo-O composite oxide catalysts supported with WO_x were prepared by citric acid sol-gel method and followed by aqueous impregnation.XRD,Raman,XPS and BET methods were used to characterize the catalysts.The partial oxidation of methane was carried out in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor.The addition of appropriate amount of Fe into CoMoO_4 to form Co_(1-y)Fe_yMo-O(y≤0.1)affected the framework of Co-O-Mo.Amorphous WO_3 was found to be formed on surface of catalysts.Co_(1y)Fe_yMo-O and WO_x/Co_(1-y)Fe_yMo-O catalysts showed activity for partial oxidation of methane.With increase of Fe~(3+) content in Co_(1-y)Fe_yMo-O composite oxides,CO selectivity increased,and CO_2 selectivity decreased.When WO_x was supported on Co_(1-y)Fe_yMo-O as catalyst,no obvious change of CH_4 conversion was observed,but CO selectivity also increased and CO_2 selectivity decreased.The formation of methanol/formaldehyde was found when WO_x/Co_(0.9)Fe_(0.1)Mo-O,WO_x-(Co_(0.9)Fe_(0.1)Mo-O)(prepared by one step aqueous impregnation method)and WO_x/Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)Mo-O catalysts were in operation.It seemed that CH_4 could be oxidized more easily to H_2/CO than to CH_3OH/CH_2O over Co_(1-y)Fe_y-Mo-O.

Abstract:Photocatalytic CH4 oxidation to CH3OH emerges as a promising strategy to sustainably utilize natural gas and mitigate the greenhouse effect. However, there remains a significant challenge for the synthesis of methanol by using O2 at low temperature. Inspired by the catalytic structure in soluble methane monooxygenase (MMO) and the corresponding reaction mechanism, we prepared a biomimetic photocatalysts with the decoration of Fe2O3 nanocluster and satellite Fe single atom immobilized on carbon nitride. The catalyst demonstrates an excellent CH3OH productivity of 5.02 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 with methanol selectivity of 98.5%. Mechanism studies reveal that the synergy between Fe2O3 nanocluster and Fe single atom establishes a dual-Fe site as MMO for O2 activation and subsequent CH4 partial oxidation. Moreover, the light excitation of Fe2O3 nanoclusters with a relative narrow bandgap could deliver the electrons and protons to atomic Fe that facilitating the oxygen reduction kinetics for the robust of methanol synthesis.
