Abstract:The performance of heteronuclear cluster [AlFeO3 ]+ in activating methane has been explored by a combination of high-level quantum chemical calculations with gas-phase experiments. At room temperature, [AlFeO3 ]+ is a mixture of 7 [AlFeO3 ]+ and 5 [AlFeO3 ]+ , in which two states lead to different reactivity and chemoselectivity for methane activation. While hydrogen extracted from methane is the only product channel for the 7 [AlFeO3 ]+ /CH4 couple, 5 [AlFeO3 ]+ is able to convert this substrate to formaldehyde. In addition, the introduction of an external electric field may regulate the reactivity and product selectivity. The interesting doping effect of Fe and the associated electronic origins are discussed, which may guide one on the design of Fe-involved catalyst for methane conversion.

Abstract:Employing first principles calculations, we show a two-step reaction mechanism for direct methane oxidation to methanol over a single atom Co-embedded graphene (Gr) catalyst, with N2O as the O-donor molecule. C-H activation is the rate-limiting step. The high reaction activity and selectivity under mild conditions were predicted for this catalyst.

Abstract:The gas-phase reactions of [TiAlO4](+) with methane have been explored by using FTICR mass spectrometry complemented by quantum chemical calculations. Interestingly, the [TiAlO4](+) ions can activate two methane molecules continuously. Moreover, in contrast to the previous reports on gas-phase methane activation by metal oxide clusters, in which hydrogen-atom transfer and/or proton-coupled electron transfer prevail, a hydride transfer process dominates the [TiAlO4](+)/CH4 system. The associated electronic origins have been discussed, and such a terminal metal-oxo active center as addressed in the [TiAlO4](+) cluster has proven to be promising in the construction of efficient catalysts concerning methane conversion.

Abstract:Direct methane conversion to value-added oxygenate products is an important approach for the effective utilization of CH 4 . However, selective C─H bond activation of CH 4 remains challenging. Herein, we investigated the methane-to-methanol conversion mechanism on MN 4 -embedded graphene (M = V, Mn, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) via density functional theory computations. We found that the Cu@N 4 graphene and Ni@N 4 graphene catalysts showed an outstanding C─H bond activation with low barrier energy of 0.45 and 0.28 eV, respectively. In addition, a detailed investigation of the electronic proprieties of the metal site, the CH 3 intermediate adsorption energy and C─H bond cleavage barrier energy demonstrates that the d-band center of metal can be a descriptor for C─H bond cleavage activity and reveal a thermodynamic-kinetic relationship: thus, the high affinity to CH 3 intermediate led to facile activation of C─H bond. Overall, this work provides a better understanding of graphene-supported single metal atom activity and selectivity toward methane oxidation, facilitating the design and fabrication of new 2D materials supported by single-atom catalysts for selective methane conversion.

Abstract:Methane is a vast hydrocarbon resource around the globe that has the potential to replace petroleum as a raw material and energy source. Therefore, the catalytic conversion of methane into high value-added chemicals is significantly important for the utilization of this hydrocarbon resource. However, this is a great challenge due to the high-energy input required to overcome the reaction barrier. Herein, a highly active catalytic conversion process of methane on an iron dimer anchored on a two-dimensional (2D) C2N monolayer (Fe2@C2N) is reported. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the superior properties of Fe2@C2N can be attributed to the formation of the Fe-O-Fe intermediate with H2O2 as the O-donor molecule, which facilitates the formation of methyl radicals and promotes the conversion of methane. This finding could pave the way toward highly efficient non-precious metal catalysts for methane oxidation reactions.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to C2 hydrocarbons under nonoxidative conditions is an attractive technology but is challenging due to high reaction temperature, severe coke deposition, and low selectivity. Here, we report three dual-metal-site catalysts (DMSCs) based on nitrogen-doped graphene (FeCo–N–C, Fe2–N–C, and Co2–N–C) for nonoxidative coupling of methane to C2 hydrocarbons from a theoretical perspective. Our calculated results reveal that DMSCs present universally better performance in methane activation than single-metal-site catalysts (Fe–N–C and Co–N–C). Among the three DMSCs, Co2–N–C exhibits the best catalytic activity and superior selectivity to ethane in the whole reaction pathway. Our microkinetic modeling reveals that the Co2–N–C catalyst can convert methane to CH3, C2H6, and H2 at 1200 K. The electronic structure analysis and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that Co2–N–C possesses both intrinsic stability and high-temperature stability. Moreover, Co2–N–C also manifests better coke resistance compared with larger Co clusters, indicated by the difficult kinetics of methane deep dehydrogenation to naked carbon. This work provides a potential catalyst prototype for the selective conversion of methane to C2 hydrocarbons under nonoxidative conditions.

By modulating micro-coordination environment of single atom Cu, both reactivity and selectivity of DCMM were improved remarkably.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane (CH4) to methanol (CH3OH) still remains a tremendous challenge in the field of catalysis because of the high CH3–H bond strength. Using density functional theory calculations, we explored that Co atoms embedded in graphene (Co1/G) improved the catalytic performance relative to other metals embedding (Mn, Ni, W, and V) in the conversion of CH4. Co1/G showed excellent activity for the activation of C–H bond with the energy barrier of only 0.80 eV. Meanwhile, Co1/G exhibited remarkable selectivity for the conversion of CH4 to CH3OH with the energy barrier of 0.70 eV, significantly lower than that of other by-products (1.17 eV). In addition, the existence of H2O molecules increased the energy barrier of the activation of C–H bond from 0.80 to 1.02 eV due to the hydrogen bond. The findings provide a new route to understanding and designing highly efficient catalysts for the direct conversion of CH4 to CH3OH.

Abstract:Efficient and direct conversion of methane to value-added products has been a long-term challenge in shale gas applications. Here, we show that atomically thin nanolayers of Pt with a single or double atomic layer thickness, supported on a two-dimensional molybdenum titanium carbide (MXene), catalyse non-oxidative coupling of methane to ethane/ethylene (C2). Kinetic and theoretical studies, combined with in-situ spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations, demonstrate that Pt nanolayers anchored at the hexagonal close-packed sites of the MXene support can activate the first C–H bond of methane to form methyl radicals that favour desorption over further dehydrogenation and thus suppress coke deposition. At 750 °C and 7% methane conversion, the catalyst runs for 72 hours of continuous operation without deactivation and exhibits >98% selectivity towards C2 products, with a turnover frequency of 0.2–0.6 s−1. Our findings provide insights into the design of highly active and stable catalysts for methane activation and create a platform for developing atomically thin supported metal catalysts.

Abstract:Methane is the major component in natural gas and flares wastefully at remote sites since the collection and use are not economical. The direct conversion of methane into liquid fuels such as methanol has been identified as a fruitful solution to this issue. Herein, density functional theory calculations and microkinetic studies were employed on 3d late-transition-metal atom (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu)-loaded graphyne as catalysts for methane-to-methanol conversion. Single metal atoms showed decent stability at pores of graphyne. The oxidant used for this work was abundant O2 instead of high-cost H2O2 or N2O. This systematic study revealed that both iron and cobalt single atoms dispersed at adjoining pores of graphyne are capable of forming catalytically active metal–oxygen (M–O) moieties upon dissociative adsorption of O2. Further, the Co–O moiety loaded on graphyne demonstrated reasonable catalytic activity for methane-to-methanol conversion with sufficient selectivity. Interestingly, dispersed single metal atoms on graphyne support were able to mimic the enzymatic formation of catalytically active M–O moieties. Moreover, it is further noticed that methane activation and methanol production kinetics are strongly correlated with the strength of the metal–oxygen bond.

Abstract:Abstract Nitrogen-doped graphene-supported single atoms convert CO 2 to CO, but fail to provide further hydrogenation to methane – a finding attributable to the weak adsorption of CO intermediates. To regulate the adsorption energy, here we investigate the metal-supported single atoms to enable CO 2 hydrogenation. We find a copper-supported iron-single-atom catalyst producing a high-rate methane. Density functional theory calculations and in-situ Raman spectroscopy show that the iron atoms attract surrounding intermediates and carry out hydrogenation to generate methane. The catalyst is realized by assembling iron phthalocyanine on the copper surface, followed by in-situ formation of single iron atoms during electrocatalysis, identified using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The copper-supported iron-single-atom catalyst exhibits a CO 2 -to-methane Faradaic efficiency of 64% and a partial current density of 128 mA cm −2 , while the nitrogen-doped graphene-supported one produces only CO. The activity is 32 times higher than a pristine copper under the same conditions of electrolyte and bias.

Theoretical screening of single-atom catalysts (SACs) on Mo2TiC2O2 MXene for methane activation

Abstract:Producing value-added chemicals and fuels from methane (CH4) under mild conditions efficiently utilizes this cheap and abundant feedstock, promoting economic growth, energy security, and environmental sustainability. However, the first CH bond activation is a significant challenge and requires high energy. Efficient catalysts have been sought for utilizing CH4 at low temperatures including emerging single-atom catalysts (SACs). In this work, we screened fourteen transition metals (TM = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ru, Rh, Pd, Pt) doped at a single oxygen vacancy in Mo2TiC2O2 (TMSA-Mo2TiC2O2 SACs) for methane activation using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results reveal that methane adsorption is thermodynamically stable on all simulated TMSA-Mo2TiC2O2 SACs, with the adsorption energies (Eads) ranging from -0.92 to -0.40 eV. For the CH activation process, Ru-SAC exhibits the lowest activation barrier (Ea) of 0.22 eV. In summary, Ru-, Rh-, Co-, V-, Cr-, Ti-, and Pt-SACs demonstrate promising catalytic properties for methane activation, with Ea values below 1.0 eV and an exothermic nature. Our findings pave the way for the design and development of novel single-atom catalysts in MXene materials, applicable not only for methane activation but also for other alkane dehydrogenation processes.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) controllable activation is the key process for CH4 upgrading, which is sensitive to the surface oxygen species. The high thermal conductivity and superb thermal stability of the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheet makes a single transition metal atom doped hexagonal boron nitride monolayer (TM-BN) possible to be a promising material for catalyzing methane partial oxidation. The performances of 24 TM-BNs for CH4 activation are systematically investigated during the CH4 oxidation by means of first-principles computation. The calculation results unravel the periodic variation trends for the stability of TM-BN, the adsorption strength and the kind of O2 species, and the resulting CH4 activation performance on TM-BNs. The formed peroxide O22− of which the OO bond could be broken and O− anions are found to be reactive oxygen species for CH4 activation under the mild conditions. It is found that the redox potential of TM center, including its valence electron number, coordination environment, and the work function of TM-BN, is the underlying reason for the formation of different oxygen species and the resulting activity for CH4 oxidative dehydrogenation.
N-Doped Graphene-Supported Diatomic Ni–Fe Catalyst for Synergistic Oxidation of CO

Abstract:Polynary single-atom structures can provide synergistic functions based on multiple active sites and reactants, which significantly improve their catalytic performance. However, the structure-activity relationships of these special structures remain elusive. Here, we report atomically dispersed Fe-Ni dual-metal catalysts anchored on N-doped graphene as an efficient catalyst for CO oxidation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculation results show that Ni serves as a catalytic nucleophilic center for CO adsorption, whereas Fe serves as an electrophilic center for O-2 adsorption, making full use of the dual-metal active sites. Thus, a heteronuclear Fe1Ni1@NGr catalyst with the synergistic effect of combining dissimilar metal atoms has better catalytic activity and lower propensity for CO poisoning than its homonuclear counterparts. Comparing the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (LH) and Eley-Rideal (ER) mechanisms for CO oxidation on Fe1Ni1@NGr, Ni-2@NGr, and Fe-2@NGr, we find that the LH mechanism with coadsorbed CO and O-2 is dynamically more favorable. In addition, residual oxygen atoms attached to the Fe-Ni active sites can easily react with additional CO molecules, indicating the achievement of a high recycling rate. These findings reveal a synergistic catalytic mechanism of graphene-supported atomically dispersed transition dual-metal catalysts, providing important guidance for the rational design of atomically dispersed catalysts.

Abstract:Synthesis of chemically stable non-precious-metal 3d-block transition metal nanocatalysts for catalytic syngas conversion remains a great challenge, since the nanocatalysts are usually too active to remain stable under ambient conditions. In situ grown (N-doped) graphene-encapsulated Ni nanoparticles (NPs) (Ni@G, Ni@G-N) were successfully obtained by a simple route via an arc-discharge method. The Ni@G composite is composed of a graphene sheath and a metallic nickel core. The carbon layer can prevent the inner Ni NPs from being etched when they are exposed to air, H2O2 or acid. Moreover, the as-prepared Ni@G exhibit excellent catalytic activity and methane selectivity and high stability in the methanation reaction. The catalytic performance can be further improved by doping nitrogen into the graphene shell. This method provides a good procedure for graphene encapsulation of non-precious-metal nanoparticles. A Molecular View of Methane Activation on Ni(111) through Enhanced Sampling and Machine Learning

Abstract:A combination of machine learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs) and enhanced sampling simulations is used to investigate the activation of methane on a Ni(111) surface. The work entails the development and iterative refinement of MLIPs, initially trained on a data set constructed via ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, supplemented by adaptive biasing forces, to enrich the sampling of catalytically relevant configurations. Our results reveal that upon incorporation of collective variables that capture the behavior of the reactant molecule, as well as additional frames that describe the dynamic response of the catalytic surface, it is possible to enhance considerably the accuracy of predicted energies and forces. By employing enhanced sampling schemes in the refinement of the MLIP, we systematically explore the potential energy surface, leading to a refined MLIP capable of predicting density functional theory-level energies and forces and replicating key geometric characteristics of the catalytic system. The resulting free energy landscapes at several temperatures provide a detailed view of the thermodynamics and dynamics of methane activation. Specifically, as methane approaches and dissociates on the catalytic surface, the process involves the dynamic interplay of CH4 and the Ni catalyst that includes both enthalpic and entropic contributions. The progression toward the transition state involves a CH4 moiety that is increasingly restrained in its ability to rotate or translate, while the stage following the transition state is characterized by a notable rise of the Ni atom that interacts with the cleaved C-H bond. This leads to an increase in the mobility of the adsorbed species, a feature that becomes more pronounced at higher temperatures.

Abstract:Direct conversion of methane to methanol (DMTM) under mild conditions is one of the most attractive and challenging processes in catalysis. By using density functional theory calculations, we systematically investigate the catalytic performance of Cu single atoms supported on O-doped BN in different coordination environments as a DMTM catalyst. Computations demonstrate that Cu coordinated with one O atom and two N atoms on O-doped BN (Cu1/O1N2-BN) exhibited the highest catalytic activity for DMTM at room temperature with quite a low rate-determining step energy barrier of 0.46 eV. The moderate adsorption of *O atoms, selective stabilization of CH3 species, and easy desorption of CH3OH are responsible for the unique activity of Cu1/O1N2-BN for DMTM. In addition, the adsorption free energy of *O atoms produced by the dissociation of O-donor molecules is a suitable descriptor for predicting the catalytic performance of materials and accelerating the discovery of catalysts for DMTM. This work opens new avenues to develop highly efficient catalysts for DMTM.
