Abstract:To improve the power of reference wavefront generated by reference wavefront source (RWS) based on silicon nitride (SiN) waveguide in point diffraction interferometer (PDI), we design the Y-branch coupler and grating coupler, and then compare the maximum coupling efficiency, 3 dB fabrication tolerance, 3 dB alignment tolerance and polarization dependent loss of two couplers. Our results show that grating coupler has higher coupling efficiency, lower etching difficulty and alignment difficulty, while Y-branch coupler has lower coating difficulty. To get the maximum efficiency, mode in the fiber must be TE mode no matter for grating coupler or Y-branch coupler. This paper improves the power of the wavefront by selecting appropriate fiber-to-waveguide couplers for waveguide RWS. PDI based on the power improved waveguide RWS is expected to be used in many measurement fields.
Single-to-four Core Optical Fiber Coupling Using a Two-photon Polymerization Produced Waveguide

Abstract:Optical coupling between single core to multi-core optical fibers usually takes place by means of optical fiber fan-ins / fan-outs, delicate free space optics, or laser inscribed freeform waveguides. In the present work, the two-photon polymerization technique is used for the first time to create a waveguide manifold on top of a four-core optical fiber tip as a means to couple light into and from a single core optical fiber, in a fast and low-cost fashion. It is demonstrated that the performance is influenced by the numerical aperture mismatch between the fabricated and the coupled waveguides. Insertion losses below 5 dB are observed when the numerical aperture mismatch is minimized, with further reduction potential, making this approach applicable to sensing or tweezer applications.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a high-efficiency grating coupler by combining an interleaved etch and apodized structure for fiber-to-chip coupling. The grating coupler was optimized using the fast directional optimization method to achieve apodization. The grating coupler utilized a layout strategy involving an extended mask to avoid alignment errors for a multi-etch structure. The coupling efficiency was measured to be -2.2 dB at a wavelength of 1549 nm with a 3 dB bandwidth of 47 nm. The grating coupler, having no gold reflector, subwavelength index matching structure, or additional material layers, was fabricated using a commercial silicon photonics process with a minimum feature size of 140 nm. This grating coupler design provides a robust and effective coupling scheme and the proposed method can be employed to adopt the design in accordance with standard foundry design rules.

Abstract:We demonstrate polarization-insensitive grating couplers on thin-film lithium niobate waveguides. Inverse optimization method is used and the fabricated couplers exhibit efficiencies of - 6 dB for the TE mode and - 6.5 dB for the TM mode.
Novel fiber taper for efficient optical interconnection

Abstract:The optical fiber taper coupling with its refractive index gradually changing along its propagation axis caused by photosensitivity was analyzed theoretically. The numerical results for two different taper shapes in step-index fiber show that the coupling of fundamental mode to the reflected mode and to high-order mode are relatively small provided the change is gradual. The experiment demonstrates that this index taper is suitable for interconnection of two dissimilar fibers. It may also be applicable for coupling of laser sources or integrated waveguides to fibers.

Abstract:The ability to manipulate light propagation sets the foundations for optical communication and information processing systems. With the ever-growing data capacity and data rate, photonic integrated circuits have attracted increasing attentions of researchers owing to their large-volume integration capacity and fast operation speed. In this work, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a new wavefront shaping method using waveguide arrays with hyperbolic secant refractive index profiles. Through theoretically analyzing the diffraction and coherence properties, we found that a single waveguide array can perform both imaging and phase transformation, which are the two primary functions of optical lenses. We further expanded this function and fabricated the corresponding devices on a silicon nitride waveguide platform. Deterministic beam shaping, such as focusing, expansion, collimation, and steering, is successfully realized. This wavefront control method exhibits the potential for on-chip optical routing, ranging, sensing, etc., with high integration density and scalability.

Abstract:To transition integrated optical communication devices from laboratory settings to practical applications, efficient coupling between optical fibers and chip waveguides remains pivotal. This paper presents a systematic design of a diluted waveguide, a key component in the edge couplers of photonic integrated circuits. To commence, we employ the transfer matrix and effective refractive index techniques to simplify the 3-dimensional diluted waveguide into 2-dimensional multi-layer slab waveguides. By computing the field distribution of the fundamental mode within the diluted waveguide, the fiber-to-waveguide coupling efficiency can be derived using a simplified overlap equation and optimized diluted waveguide structure through particle swarm optimization algorithms. Consequently, we achieve a remarkable fiber-to-waveguide coupling efficiency exceeding 95% for TEmode and 92% for TM-mode, with a polarization dependent loss (PDL) of merely 0.13 dB. Interestingly, the optimized diluted waveguide exhibits quasi-single mode behavior, as the fundamental mode containing 98% of the total energy propagates within it. Additionally, the diluted waveguide edge coupler demonstrates favorable alignment tolerance, with 1-dB excess losses of ±2.3 µm and (-2.5, +3) µm along the horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Notably, our approach offers a versatile methodology for designing multi-layer waveguides across various materials. This method has the potential to be universally applied.The primary purpose of the diluted waveguide lies in facilitating superior edge coupling with fiber waveguides, thereby seamlessly integrating external light sources into the waveguide structure.

Abstract:Integrated diffractive optical mode converter, consisting of a diffractive optical element (DOE) and a slab waveguide, is used for fiber-to-waveguide coupling. The phase of the DOE is generally designed by optimization algorithm. In this paper, the precise design, a new method with one more restrictive way,is adopted to design the diffractive optical mode converter for fiber-to-waveguide coupling. Through this method, the intensity of any point on the output plane is fully filled with the required demand. Compared with what previously published, the coupling loss of the precise designed converter is lower.
Direct laser written polymer waveguides with out of plane couplers for optical chips

Abstract:Optical technologies call for waveguide networks featuring high integration densities, low losses, and simple operation. Here, we present polymer waveguides fabricated from a negative tone photoresist via two-photon-lithography in direct laser writing, and show a detailed parameter study of their performance. Specifically, we produce waveguides featuring bend radii down to 40 {\mu}m, insertion losses of the order of 10 dB, and loss coefficients smaller than 0.81 dB/mm, facilitating high integration densities in writing fields of 300 {\mu}m x 300 {\mu}m. A novel three-dimensional coupler design allows for coupling control as well as direct observation of outputs in a single field of view through a microscope objective. Finally, we present beam-splitting devices to construct larger optical networks, and we show that the waveguide material is compatible with the integration of quantum emitters.

Abstract:By using the conformal transformation, method of images, electro-optic modulation theory and coupled mode theory, an optimum design is performed, and the characteristics are analyzed for a polymer directional coupler electro-optic switch with a rib waveguide structure. The simulation results show that the coupling length is about 4420 µm, and the switching voltage is about 16.2 V for the operation wavelength 1550 nm. Under the operation voltages of 0 and 16.2 V, the insertion loss and the crosstalk of the coupling region are less than 0.30 and − 20 dB within the ranges of the wavelength from 1520 to 1580 nm and the coupling region length from 4130 to 4710 µm.

Abstract:Oriented to the multicore fiber-based space-division multiplexing (SDM) networks, the inter-core coupling in multicore fiber is desired to transfer signals between cores. In this paper, we proposed and designed an integrated optical coupler based on three-core fiber (TCF) with long-period gratings (LPGs). The TCF with three cores distributed in the cladding connected with single-mode fiber at both ends through adjacent cores. The self-coupling characteristics of TCF are studied firstly, and the effects of core pitch and coupling distance on coupling efficiency are analyzed to rule out the direct coupling between adjacent cores, indicating that coupling distance increases with the core pitch increases. With LPGs induced in TCF, coupling between core mode and cladding mode in each individual core is realized, and then the power at resonance wavelength transfers among cores through the overlapped cladding modes. Moreover, with the LPGs, the efficient coupling among adjacent cores in TCF has been realized at the C-band. In addition, the influence of structural parameters such as core pitch, grating duty cycle and coupling co-efficiency do affect the coupling efficiency of TCF-LPGs. By adjusting the structural parameters properly, coupling efficiency of ~ 66% could be achieved to equalizing the output power in three cores. Therefore, the proposed TCF-LPGs could be used as an optical coupler, which would be helpful in multicore fiber-based SDM networks.

Abstract:An array of 50 mu mx50 mu m polymer waveguides with 45 degrees total internal reflection (TIR) wideband coupling mirrors were fabricated by soft molding to achieve fully embedded boardlevel optoelectronic interconnects. The 45 degrees TIR coupling mirrors were formed at the ends of the waveguides to provide surface normal light coupling between waveguides and optoelectronic devices. Three-dimensional optoelectronic interconnects were replicated in one-step transfer by the soft molding technique. The measured propagation loss of the multimode waveguide was 0.16 dB/cm at 850 nm wavelength. The coupling efficiency of the silver-coated 45 degrees micromirrors buried under the top cladding was 92% with low polarization sensitivity. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:A silicon-cored-fiber (SCF) is proposed for coplanar light coupling from an incoming fiber to a silicon waveguide. The simulation results show that an optimized polished conical SCF coupler can have high coupling efficiencies in both TE and TM modes and with low polarization penalty.

Abstract:In this study, a triple-layered optical interconnecting integrated waveguide chip was designed and fabricated using an epoxy cross-linking polymer photonic platform. Fluorinated photopolymers FSU-8 and AF-Z-PC EP were self-synthesized as waveguide cores and cladding materials, respectively. The triple-layered optical interconnecting waveguide device comprised 4 × 4 arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) -based wavelength-selective switching (WSS) arrays, 4 × 4 multi-mode interference (MMI) -cascaded channel-selective switching (CSS) arrays, and 3 × 3 direct-coupling (DC) interlayered switching arrays. The overall optical polymer waveguide module was fabricated by direct UV writing. For the multilayered WSS arrays, the wavelength-shifting sensitivity was ∼0.48 nm/°C. For the multilayered CSS arrays, the average switching time was ∼280 µs, and the maximum power consumption was <30 mW. For interlayered switching arrays, the extinction ratio approximated 15.2 dB. The transmission loss for the triple-layered optical waveguide chip was measured as 10.0-12.1 dB. The flexible multilayered photonic integrated circuits (PIC) can be used in high-density integrated optical interconnecting systems with a large-volume optical information transmission capacity.

Abstract:Efficient coupling between on-chip sources and cavities plays a key role in silicon photonics. However, despite the importance of this basic functionality, there are few systematic design tools to simultaneously control coupling between multiple modes in a compact resonator and a single waveguide. Here, we propose a large-scale adjoint optimization approach to produce wavelength-scale waveguide-cavity couplers operating over tunable and broad frequency bands. We numerically demonstrate couplers discovered by this method that can achieve critical, or nearly critical, coupling between multi-ring cavities and a single waveguide at up to six widely separated wavelengths spanning the 560-1500 nm range of interest for on-chip nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract:The co-packaging of optics and electronics provides a potential path forward to achieving beyond 50 Tbps top of rack switch packages. In a co-packaged design, the scaling of bandwidth, cost, and energy is governed by the number of optical transceivers (TxRx) per package as opposed to transistor shrink. Due to the large footprint of optical components relative to their electronic counterparts, the vertical stacking of optical TxRx chips in a co-packaged optics design will become a necessity. As a result, development of efficient, dense, and wide alignment tolerance chip-to-chip optical couplers will be an enabling technology for continued TxRx scaling. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme to vertically couple into standard 220 nm silicon on insulator waveguides from 220 nm silicon nitride on glass waveguides using overlapping, inverse double tapers. Simulation results using Lumerical's 3D Finite Difference Time Domain solver solver are presented, demonstrating insertion losses below -0.13 dB for an inter-chip spacing of 1 $\mu$m, 1 dB vertical and lateral alignment tolerances of approximately $\pm$ 2.7 $\mu$m, a greater than 300 nm 1 dB bandwidth, and 1 dB twist and tilt tolerance of approximately 2.3 degrees and 0.4 degrees, respectively. These results demonstrate the potential of our coupler for use in co-packaged designs requiring high performance, high density, CMOS compatible out of plane optical connections.

Abstract:Optical I/O plays a crucial role in the lifespan of lab-on-a-chip systems, from preliminary testing to operation in the target environment. However, due to the precise alignments required, efficient and reliable fiber-to-chip connections remain challenging, yielding inconsistent test results and unstable packaged performance. To overcome this issue, for use in single mode on-chip systems, we propose the incorporation of area-enlarged grating couplers working in conjunction with multimode fibers. This combination enables simpler, faster, and more reliable connections than the traditional small area grating coupler with single-mode fiber. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a 3dB in-plane (X, Y) spatial tolerance of (10.2 {\mu}m, 17.3 {\mu}m) for the large area configuration, being at least (2.49, 3.33) times that of the small area one, and agreeing well with theoretical calculations. The simple concept is readily applicable to a range of photonic systems where cheaper more robust optical I/O is desired.
