Abstract:Two poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) diblock copolymers, PDMAEMA(84)-b-PAA(18) and PDMAEMA(50)-b-PAA(18), were synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and their dual-stimuli responsive behaviors to the changes in temperature and pH in aqueous solutions were investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), (1)H NMR spectroscopy and surface tension measurement. Different from PDMAEMA(84)-b-PAA(18) solutions where no aggregation is observed between pH 7.0 and 9.5, the PDMAEMA(50)-b-PAA(18) aggregates can exist in this broad pH range due to the hydrophobic interactions among the charge-balanced polyampholyte chains. At high pH, e.g., 11.0, the DMAEMA segments collapse to form the core of micelles due to the hydrophobic property of the de-protonized DMAEMA stabilized with the highly ionized AA segments on the surface of the micelles upon heating. At pH around the IEP, e.g., 9.5, large micelles can be formed in PDMAEMA(84)-b-PAA(18) solution upon heating, just like that at pH 11.0, while PDMAEMA(50)-b-PAA(18) first formed the micelles due to the electrostatic attraction between ionized AA segments and protonated DMAEMA segments, but the aggregation of the micelles was hardly happened upon heating due to the smaller DMAEMA segment. Moreover, LCST can be exactly estimated by surface tension experiment.

Abstract:A series of pH-sensitive and thermosensitive amphiphilic pentablock copolymers, PNIPAM(x)-b-P(tBA-co-AA)(90)-bPPO(36)-b-P(tBA-co-AA)(90)-PNIPAM(x) (x-DH) with different lengths x of PNIPAM blocks (x = 58, 95, and 111) and various degrees of hydrolysis of PtBA blocks (DH approximate to 10, 60, and 100%), were prepared and self-assembled into micelles in dilute aqueous solutions. By dynamic light scattering (DLS) and UV-vis spectrophotometry characterizations, at pH = 2, x-DH micelle aqueous solutions show an irreversible thermosensitive process due to the hydrogen (H) bonding between PNIPAM blocks and protonated AA groups. At pH = 12, x-DH micelle aqueous solutions show a reversible thermosensitive process when the DH is low (10%) but are thermoinsensitive when the DH is high (similar to 60 and 100%) due to the electrostatic repulsion between deprotonated AA groups. The morphologies and structures of x-DH micelles are directly visualized by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) at 20 degrees C. Under acid conditions, with increasing hydrophilicity, the transformation of x-DH micelles from large compound micelles (LCMs) with a bent corona, through LCMs with extended corona, core-corona irregularities, core-shell-corona spheres, coexistence of core-shell-corona spheres and core-corona cylinders, core-corona cylinders, and coexistence of core-corona spheres and core-corona cylinders, to core-corona spheres is identified. Under alkaline conditions, the deprotonated AA groups introduce electrostatic repulsion into micelles, and four nanostructures of x-DH micelles, i.e., LCMs with an uneven surface and inhomogeneous core, core-corona spheres, core-corona cylinders, and core-shell-corona spheres, are observed.

Abstract:In this work, a triblock copolymer poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly[6-(4-methoxy-azobenzene-4'-oxy) hexyl-methacrylate]- block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PAA-b-PAzoMA-b-PNIPAM) containing pH, photo and temperature sensitive groups was synthesized through three-step RAFT polymerization. By tuning the solvents, the copolymer could self-assemble into spherical micelles or vesicles with multi-stimuli responsiveness. Either the micelles or the vesicles underwent obvious size decreases when the temperature was above the LCST of PNIPAM, and size increases when the pH value was below the pK(a) of PAA without obvious morphology changes. In addition, under UV irradiation, the micelles disrupted into much smaller particles whereas the vesicles transformed into micelles with an apparent size decrease on account of trans-to-cis isomerization of the azobenzene moieties. Upon irradiation by linear polarized light, the micelles were elongated into spindles and short rods. Furthermore, the photo-isomerization rate of the azobenzene moiety could be modulated by pH and temperature. The multi-stimuli responsive properties of PAA-b-PAzoMA-b-PNIPAM will further expand the potential application of azobenzene copolymers in smart materials.

Abstract:Poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) with a beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) at the chain end was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP); poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) with a -C=C- segment and an adamantane (Ada) group at two ends, respectively, was prepared through ring-opening polymerization (ROP), and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with a -S-C(S)-S- segment, which can be converted into a thiol group, was yielded by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (RAFT). A supramolecular triblock stimuli-responsive copolymer PNIPAM-b-PCL-b-PDMAEMA having good biocompatibility with PNIPAM and PDMAEMA hydrophilic segments and PCL hydrophobic segment was constructed by thiol-ene Michael addition and host- guest interaction. The triblock copolymer could self-assemble into vesicles and respond to carbon dioxide (CO2) gas and temperature reversibly. Under the stimulation of CO2, the vesicular assemblies swelled obviously; while raising the temperature from 25 to 40 degrees C, the assemblies displayed a conversion between vesicles and spherical micelles.

Abstract:A novel amphiphilic copolymer poly(ethylene glycol)-block-poly(N,N-dimethylamino-2-ethylmethacrylate)-blockpoly[6-(4-methoxy-azobenzene-4′-oxy) hexyl methacrylate] (PEG-b-PDMAEMA-b-PMMAzo) was prepared by ATRP polymerization. The self-assembly and responsive behaviors were investigated by SEM, TEM, LLS and UV-Vis spectra. The results indicated that the copolymers can self-assemble into spherical structures in aqueous media. The aggregate size can be tuned by pH and temperature. The trans-cis isomerization behavior of the formed aggregates was also examined. Upon irradiation with a linear polarized light, the elongation degree of the aggregates was increased with the irradiation time.

Abstract:A multi-responsive hydrophilic ABCBA-type pentablock copolymer, consisting of poly(ethylene glycol), poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), and poly(2-(diethylamino) ethyl methacrylate), PDEA-b-PNIPAM-b-PEG-b-PNIPAM-b-PDEA, was synthesized by consecutive reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymerization showed all of the expected features of living radical polymerization and allowed the synthesis of copolymers with controlled lengths of the PNIPAM and PDEA blocks. Due to the multi-component and multi-functional nature of the pentablock copolymer, the solution properties can be manipulated by the changing of parameters such as temperature, pH etc. For example, the copolymer could be dissolved in acidic aqueous solution at room temperature, since the pH was below the pK(a) of the PDEA block, and the temperature was below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the PNIPAM block. While in alkaline solution at room temperature, the copolymer self-assembled into core-shell-corona micelles, with the hydrophobic PDEA block as the core, the thermoresponsive PNIPAM block as the shell and the hydrophilic PEG block as the corona. At elevated temperatures in acidic media, the copolymer self-assembled into PNIPAM-core micelles with mixed hydrophilic PEG and pH-responsive PDEA coronas. Moreover, the self-assembly behavior of the pentablock copolymers in aqueous solution was investigated by varying the length of PDEA blocks.

Abstract:Poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymer (Pluronic F127) was modified by introducing poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) at both the PEO ends, and the pentablock copolymer (PNIPAM(41)-F127-PNIPAM(41), PN41) so prepared was characterized using gel permeation chromatography and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The degree of polymerization of NIPAM blocks at the two ends was 41. The solution behaviour and microstructure of PN41 aggregates in water were examined using UV-visible spectroscopy, micro-differential scanning calorimetry and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and compared with F127. Two lower critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) were observed for the pentablock copolymer, corresponding to PPO and PNIPAM blocks, respectively. The adsorption of PN41 on thiol-grafted hydrophobic gold surfaces at various temperatures was investigated using a quartz crystal microbalance. It was found that the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of PN41 were mainly determined by the interactions of the pentablock copolymers with different chain conformations in dilute aqueous solutions at various temperatures. SANS measurements were used to determine the temperature-dependent structural evolution of polymer micelles in aqueous solution. A NOESY study revealed that above the LSCT of PNIPAM, the interaction of PPO and PNIPAM protons increases and the distance between PPO and PNIPAM decreases. (c) 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Abstract:A novel amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was successfully synthesized via the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique, using a bromo-terminated difunctional polysulfone as macroinitiator. The difunctional polysulfone macroinitiator was prepared by esterifying the phenolic end groups of polysulfone to α-haloesters. This macroinitiator was then used to initiate the polymerization of a glucose-carrying monomer, 3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-D-glucofuranose (MAIpG), resulting an ABA type triblock copolymer. After acidolysis treatment, the isopropylidenyl groups of the protected sugar residues were removed, thus the amphiphilic ABA type triblock copolymer with well-defined glycopolymer segments was obtained. The polymers obtained were identified by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, and TGA. The self-assembly behavior of the amphiphilic glycopolymer in selective solvent (e.g. DMF/H2O) system was also preliminarily explored. The resultant amphiphilic glycopolymer shows potential applications in the fields of controlled release and delivery of drugs, micro-reactors, nano-materials, medical devices, and so on.

Abstract:A series of poly(2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) homopolymers and poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PDMAEMA-b-PAA) diblock copolymers were synthesized by atomic transfer radical polymerization. Thanks to a fine-tuning of the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance by varying the molecular weight of the polymers and the pH of the aqueous solutions, as well as the composition for the block copolymers, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and the aggregation-dissolution kinetics of PDMAEMA homopolymers and PDMAEMA-b-PAA block copolymers can be adjusted. For the block copolymers, the results show that larger relative size of the PDMAEMA blocks leads to an increasing tendency to form micellar aggregates and a decrease of the LCST of the aqueous solution, which is consistent with the increasing copolymer hydrophobicity. A significant difference of the stimuli-responsive behavior between PDMAEMA-rich and PAA-rich copolymers is observed, because the former exhibit thermo-responsive behavior in a broad temperature range of 40-60 degrees C in basic media, while the pH-responsive behavior is dominant, and only a weak thermo-responsive behavior is exhibited around the specific isoelectric point (IEP) in the latter case. The aggregation rate is strongly influenced by temperature, molecular weight, structure, and composition of the polymer. Specifically, temperature has a stronger effect than the molar ratio of the PDMAEMA segment in the copolymer (related to its hydrophobicity) and the chain molecular weight, although the PDMAEMA-b-PAA copolymers show faster aggregation rate than do the PDMAEMA homopolymers.

Abstract:Intelligent polymers, due to their sensitive stimuli response to changes in the environment, have gained increasing amounts of attention over recent years and have become a popular topic in polymer materials science. In this study, the aggregation behaviors and stimuli responses of the stimuli-responsive diblock polyampholyte poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(acrylic acid) (PDMAEMA-b-PAA) are conveniently tunable by introducing pH changes, temperature changes, salt addition and surfactant neutralization. Under different pH values, either globular or fractal self-assemblies can be observed in which the latter have crystal properties. Salts and alkalis can promote the fractal aggregation growth because their deposited crystals can act as nucleation sites for the polyampholyte chains. A combination of fluorescence spectroscopy, atom force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy revealed that the presence of anionic surfactants in the PDMAEMA-b-PAA solutions promoted the solubility of the polyampholyte, consequently leading to a more homogeneous distribution of the polymer chains on the solid substrate upon drying the mixtures. The fractal formation was suppressed for the studied Gemini surfactants, and a higher surfactant hydrophobicity results in an earlier start of the formation of the fractal pattern.

Abstract:In this contribution, we reported the synthesis of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-block-poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM-b-PVP-b-PNIPAM) triblock copolymers through sequential reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer/macromolecular design via the interchange of xanthate (RAFT/MADIX) process. The triblock copolymers have been characterized by means of H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This ABA triblock copolymer displayed a typical thermoresponsive gelation behavior. In this work, the thermoresponsive gelation behavior was investigated by means of rheological measurements, micro-differential scanning calorimetry (Micro-DSC) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Abstract:In this article, the synthesis and self-assembly of a novel well-defined biocompatible amphiphilic POEGMA-PDMS-POEGMA triblock copolymer were studied. The copolymer was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) using alpha,omega-dibromo polydimethylsiloxane macroinitiator (Br-PDMS-Br). Br-PDMS-Br was synthesized through the esterification of alpha,omega-hydroxypropyl polydimethylsiloxane and 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide. The structures of the copolymers were confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography. The copolymers showed reversible aggregation in response to temperature cycles with a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) between 61 and 66 degrees C, as determined by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry and dynamic light scattering. The LCST values increased in proportion to the length of the hydrophilic block and were lower than that of the POEGMA homopolymer. The self-assembly behavior of the copolymers in aqueous solution was investigated by fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The critical micelle concentration value (1.08-0.26 10(-6) mol L-1) decreased as the length of the POEGMA chain increased. The POEGMA-PDMS-POEGMA copolymers can easily self-assemble into spherical micelles in aqueous solution. Such biocompatible block copolymers may be attractive candidates as "smart" thermo-responsive drug delivery systems. (C) 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Diblock copolymer poly[(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-block-poly(acrylic acid)(PDMA-b-PAA) with a low polydispersity(PDI=1.23) has been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP).The zwitterionic properties of PDMA-b-PAA solutions and the effect of ionic strength of small molecule salt on the solution behavior have been investigated.It is shown that PDMA-b-PAA has both pH-and temperature-responsive assembly behavior with the IEP of 6.9 and the LCST of 37.8 ℃ and has anti-polyelectrolyte effect.Phase separation happened in the pH range of 5.4-7.3 and the perfect reversible thermal-responsive behaviors were clearly observed.

Abstract:The double thermosensitive and narrow dispersed PNIPAm110-PEO100-PPO65-PEO100-PNIPAm110 pentablock terpolymer was synthesized by the typical atomic transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method with N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) as the monomer and modified poly(ethylene oxide)100−poly(propylene oxide)65−poly(ethylene oxide)100 (PEO100-PPO65-PEO100) block copolymer as the macroinitiator. Microdifferential scanning calorimetry (micro-DSC) data showed that the pentablock terpolymer exhibited two low critical solution temperatures (LCSTs) at 31 and 34 °C in the aqueous solution, which can be attributed to the thermal phase transition of the PPO block and PNIPAm block, respectively. The chain conformation of the pentablock terpolymer in aqueous solution was then studied in detail by using a combination of static and dynamic laser light scattering (SLS-DLS). Abstract:In this study, the synthesis, chemical modification and self-assembly in aqueous media of novel temperature-responsive and pH-responsive triblock terpolymers of the type (poly(diethylene glycol methyl ether methacrylate)-b-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly (lauryl methacrylate) (PDEGMA-b-PDMAEMA-b-PLMA) are reported. The triblock terpolymers were synthesized via RAFT polymerization and the molecular characterization was achieved by SEC, 1H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. Methyl iodide (CH3I) was utilized for chemical modification of the PDMAEMA blocks to increase the overall solubility of the triblock terpolymers in aqueous media and to obtain permanent positive charges, converting them to temperature-responsive block polyelectrolytes. PDEGMA-b-PDMAEMA-b-PLMA triblock terpolymers and their quaternized analogs self-assemble in aqueous media forming spherical micellar structures consisting of a hydrophobic PLMA core and stimuli-responsive PDMAEMA and PDEGMA corona, as evidenced by light scattering measurements. The dimensions of the formed micelles were influenced noticeably by variations in the solution temperature and pH. Moreover, we examine the formation of micelleplexes between quaternized PDEGMA-b-QPDMAEMA-b-PLMA thermoresponsive micelles and DNA molecules. The complexation capability of the formed micelleplexes was investigated by ethidium bromide quenching assays utilizing fluorescence spectroscopy techniques, and UV-vis spectroscopy. Light scattering techniques are utilized in order to determine the structural characteristics of the formed micelleplexes. The quaternized terpolymer micelles effectively interact with nucleic acid molecules with their surface charge and their size depending on the composition of block terpolymers, the N/P ratio, as well as the increase of temperature above the LCST value of the temperature responsive PDEGMA block.

Abstract:A temperature/pH-sensitive introducing monomer - dimethyl-benzyl-(2-methacryloxyethyl) ammonium bromide (DMBMAAB) was synthesized through the reasonable design of functional groups, combining the hydrophilic cation and hydrophobic benzyl on a same monomer. The structure and purity of DMBMAAB was characterized by (1)H-NMR analysis and liquid chromatography analysis respectively. The copolymer P (DMBMAAB-co-AM) of DMBMAAB and acrylamide (AM) was synthesized through the free radical polymerization in aqueous solution. The P(DMBMAAB-co-AM) was characterized by (1)H-NMR analysis and elemental analysis. The aqueous solution of P (DMBMAAB-co-AM) exhibits a different temperature-response property compared to poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm), which exhibits a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) at 32 degrees C, however the P(DMBMAAB-co-AM) exhibits a higher critical solution temperature (HCST). The transmittance and apparent viscosity (apparent property) changed evidently when heating the solution of P (DMBMAAB-co-AM) from 50 degrees C to 70 degrees C. The pH-sensitive property of P(DMBMAAB-co-AM) is another difference compared PNIPAAm, which is sensitive to temperature but not pH-sensitive;the apparent property changed sharply when pH rose from 11 to 12. Moreover, the apparent property of P (DMBMAAB-co-AM) solution can respond to other environmental stimuli, such as surfactant (SDS) and salt (NaCl). The results indicate that P (DMBMAAB-co-AM) is a kind of novel functional material, which exhibits the properties of multifactor response, and the interaction between hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups in the chains and environmental condition were the main reason for the stimuli-responsive behavior.
Dual Thermo-Responsive Amphiphilic Alternating Copolymers: One-Pot Synthesis and the Temperature-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:Synthesis and self-assembly of stimuli-responsive amphiphilic alternating copolymers (AAC) are an emerging land of tremendous possibilities. Herein, by combining backbone polyethylene glycol (PEG) with pendent oligo-polyglycol simultaneously, two alternating LCST segments are knitted through enzymatic synthesis, giving a series of alternating poly[(PEG400-a-succinic acid)-co-(diol(3EG)-a-succinic acid)] (PPSDS) for the first time. All the PPSDSs show only one-step sharp temperature responsiveness in transmittance–temperature curve owing to stabilization effect of PEG400. The cloud points can be linearly controlled by simply adjusting the feeding ratio of PEG400/diol-3EG. Referring to published works and 1 H-NMR spectra in D 2 O, all the obtained AAC formed penetrable nanovesicles under 4 °C. The TEM and 1 H-NMR results confirmed that when heated to 18 °C, PPSDS of “9/1” transformed from nanovesicles to large-compound micelles due to large hydrophobic volume, while other PPSDS of “8/2, 7/3, 6/4” retained the vesicle structures, except that the hydrophilic layer turned from PEG400 + diol(3EG) to PEG400 alone, leading to the size reduction. The temperature-controlled size “expansion and contraction” of nanovesicles was unique for AAC, which was potentially good for enhancing loading rate. Further heating above cloud point resulted in the destruction of nanostructures and irregular intermolecular aggregations. The first reported dual temperature-responsive AAC was innovative in structure design, providing a potential opportunity for the design and synthesis of controllable self-assemble structures and smart biomacromolecules in biomedical applications.
