Abstract:Graphene conductive inks have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their high conductivity, corrosion resistance, and environmentally friendly nature. However, the dispersion of graphene in aqueous solution is still challenging. In this work, we synthesized an amphiphilic graft copolymer, polyvinyl alcohol-g-polyaniline (PVA-g-PANI), and studied the graphene dispersion prepared with the graft copolymer by high-speed shear dispersion. The amphiphilic graft copolymer can be used as a stabilizer and adhesive agent in graphene dispersion. Given the steric hindrance of the graft copolymer, the stability of graphene dispersion is improved by decreasing the probability of π-π stacking. PVA-g-PANI has a better stability on graphene dispersion than carboxymethylcellulose sodium (CMC-Na) and a mixture of PVA and PANI. The graft copolymer has only a slight effect on the conductivity of graphene dispersion due to the existence of conductive PANI, which is beneficial for preparing the graphene dispersion with good conductivity and adhesion. Graphene dispersion is well-adapted to screen printing and is very stable with regard to the sheet resistance bending cycle.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2>Graphene-based conductive ink has been widely applied to printed electronics, which nevertheless faces several challenges, e.g., dispersion and stability of graphene flakes and ideal compromise between conductivity and transparency. This work reveals a multi-component synergistic stabilization method towards a well-dispersed and stable graphene-based conductive ink with high conductivity and transparency. Commercially available graphene (<10 layers) material (KNG®-G2) was selected and ethanol/water (2/1, v/v) was used as co-solvent to disperse the graphene flakes. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, providing network for attaching of graphene through π-π force and amphipathic polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone, acting as a surfactant were indispensable to stabilize conductive ink. The as-prepared graphene-based ink can be deposited on different substrates through drop-casting, spin-coating and inkjet-printing and the sheet resistance of the deposited films was tested as low as 180 Ω/sq with the optical transmittance of 90%. The method reported in this work is potential for industrial production toward a graphene composite conductive ink with high conductivity and transparency for printing electronic applications.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to realize the controlled construction and modulation of micro-/nanostructures of conductive composite materials (CCMs) in a facile way. Herein, interdigital electrodes are prepared by direct-ink-write printing co-blended inks made of ethyl cellulose and carbon nanotubes on cellulose paper. The cellulose nanofibers (CFs) are prepared by electrospinning cellulose acetate on to an aluminum foil, followed by deacetylation in NaOH/ethanol. All co-blended inks exhibit a typical non-Newtonian shear thinning behavior, enabling smooth extrusion and printing. The above electrodes and the conductive CF films with excellent thermal stability are assembled into a pressure sensor, which has a high sensitivity (0.0584 KPa−1) to detect the change in external loading pressure. The obtained porous CFs film is further endowed with conductivity by in situ polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy), which are uniformly distributed on the CFs surface as particles; a triboelectric nanogenerator is constructed by using the CF@PPy film as a tribo-positive friction layer to achieve efficient energy harvesting (output voltage = 29.78 V, output current = 2.12 μA). Therefore, the construction of CCMs with micro-/nanostructures based on cellulose derivatives have essential application prospects in emerging high-tech fields, such as green electronics for sensing and energy harvesting.

Abstract:Conductive cellulose composites have received much attention as emerging materials due to their unique properties, such as biodegradability and flexibility. However, the achievable levels of conductivity of these cellulose composites are generally low due to the intrinsically nonconductive properties of cellulose. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were applied for preparation of a carbon fibers/expanded graphite (CF/EG) dispersion which was coated on cellulose paper to prepare highly conductive cellulose composites. Such composite materials were characterized based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) observation, FT-IR, XPS, and XRD and by determining the zeta potential, particle size, contact angle, and rheological behavior. It was found that the addition of CNC resulted in a significant improvement in the stability of the CF/EG dispersion. These results were explained by the following facts: (1) CNC improved the surface charge of the CF and EG due to the presence of negatively charged groups on the CNC surface, and (2) CNC increased the wettability of the CF and EG due to large availability of hydroxyl groups from CNC. The as-prepared CF/EG/CNC dispersion was then applied by coating cellulose paper surfaces, and the obtained papers presented superior conductivity and high flexibility.
Enhanced Conductivity, Adhesion, and Environmental Stability of Printed Graphene Inks with Nitrocellulose

Abstract:Recent developments in liquid-phase processing of carbon nanomaterials have established graphene as a promising candidate for printed electronics. Of great importance in the ink formulation is the stabilizer, which has to provide excellent dispersion stability and tunability in the liquid state, and also decompose into chemical moieties that promote high electrical conductivity and robust mechanical and environmental stability. Here we demonstrate the promise of nitrocellulose as a synergistic polymer stabilizer for graphene inks. Graphene processed with nitrocellulose is formulated into inks with viscosities ranging over 4 orders of magnitude for compatibility with a wide range of deposition methods. Following thermal treatment, the graphene/nitrocellulose films offer high electrical conductivity of ∼40 000 S/m, along with mechanical flexibility. Moreover, in contrast to state-of-the-art graphene inks based on ethyl cellulose, the nitrocellulose residue offers superior mechanical and environmental stability as assessed by a suite of stress tests, including the Scotch tape test, a water sonication test, and an 85/85 damp heat test. By exploring the fundamental chemistry underlying these macroscopic benefits, we provide insight into binder selection for functional nanomaterial inks while producing a high-performance graphene ink with strong potential for printed and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Highly conductive pristine graphene electrodes were fabricated by inkjet printing using ethyl cellulose-stabilized ink prepared from pristine graphene. Pristine graphene was generated by exfoliation from graphite using ultrasound-assisted supercritical CO2. The ink, at concentrations up to 1 mg/mL, was stable for more than 9 months and had compatible fluidic characteristics for efficient and reliable inkjet printing. The inkjet printing patterns of the graphene on diverse substrates were uniform and continuous. After 30 printing passes and annealing at 300 degrees C for 30 min, the printed films developed a high conductivity of 9.24 x 10(3) S/m. The resistivity of the printed electrodes on the flexible substrates increased by less than 5% after 1000 bending cycles and by 5.3% under a folding angle of 180 degrees. The presented exfoliated pristine graphene and the corresponding efficient methods for formulating the ink and fabricating conductive electrodes are expected to have high potential in applications involving graphene-based flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:A general formulation engineering method is adopted in this study to produce a highly concentrated (≈3 mg mL−1) inkjet printable starch–graphene ink in aqueous media. Photonic annealing of the starch–graphene ink is validated for rapid post‐processing of printed films. The experimental results demonstrate the role of starch as dispersing agent for graphene in water and photonic pulse energy in enhancing the electrical properties of the printed graphene patterns, thus leading to an electrical conductivity of ≈2.4 × 104 S m−1. The curing mechanism is discussed based on systematic material studies. The eco‐friendly and cost‐efficient approach presented in this work is of technical potential for the scalable production and integration of conductive graphene inks for widespread applications in printed and flexible electronics. A water‐based inkjet printable graphene ink is formulated using starch nanoparticles as dispersing agent, thus eliminating conventional harmful solvents and additives. Rapid photothermal post‐treatment of the printed patterns is demonstrated without damaging the underneath substrate. The resulting starch–graphene films shows high electrical conductivity of 2.4 × 104 S m−1, on par with the highest values reported in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper, an organic stabilized and dispersive Cu nanowires (NWs) ink was proposed. We investigated and determined the recipe of the expectant ink framework and proved its usage as flexible transparent conductive films. The influences of main solutes on stability and dispersity of the ink were discussed detailedly. The stability was evaluated by the sedimentation time of the ink and the dispersity was weighed by the morphology of the freely-dispersed Cu NWs ink on substrates. The electric properties of the following conductive films were obatained by Hall effect measurement system. A simple and efficient method has carried out for fabricating the transparent electrodes from the prepared Cu NWs ink. These electrodes possessed a good performance in both conductivity and transmittance, which verified the pragmaticality of suggested Cu NWs ink as well. Typically, the sheet resistances of the processed electrodes made by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technique were about 80 Ω·sq−1, and the light transmittances at 550 nm were over 80%. The figures of merit of them were over 10−3 Ω−1.
Graphene dispersions in alkanes: toward fast drying conducting inks

Abstract:Graphene inks are becoming widely popular. However the vast majority of these inks are formulated in polar solvents with high-boiling points. Their slow evaporation is a bottleneck factor in roll-to-roll printing processes. Here, we developed a highly-conductive fast-drying graphene ink in isooctane, a non-polar and low-boiling solvent. For this purpose, a diblock copolymer containing pendant cholesterol groups was used during the exfoliation of natural graphite in isooctane. The polymer develops non-covalent supramolecular interactions with the graphene conjugated system, resulting in the formation of stable graphene dispersions (up to c = 4 mg mL-1). These dispersions were used for direct writing on a variety of substrates, and were shown to dry instantly after application. The influence of polymer concentration on graphene characteristics, on colloidal stability and on electrochemical characteristics has been studied. The lowest sheet resistance (80 Ω □-1) was obtained when 23% of the graphene surface was covered by the polymer. In this case, the flakes were constituted of 2-5 graphene layers. More extensive exfoliation, down to single-layer graphene, was achieved at greater surface coverage, but led to inks with higher sheet resistance. Thus, by combining a tailored polymeric dispersant, a smooth exfoliation process and a low-boiling non-polar ink solvent, we were able to prepare highly-conductive fast-drying graphene inks which should have a high potentital for the development of roll-to-roll printed electronics.
Preparation and Characterization of Carbon Based Composite Conductive Ink

Abstract:The efficient dispersion of inorganic materials in organic polymers of composite conductive inks is the key challenge in formulating composite conductive inks. To this end, this paper presents a preparation of water-based composite conductive ink using carbon-based graphene oxide (GO) and poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT: PSS) filler, and proposes a simple and stable personalized composite conductive ink formula based on the relative property performances. In order to improve the compatibility between PEDOT: PSS and GO, firstly, GO was pretreated with sulfuric acid at pH = 1 in a water bath, next the acidified GO solution was mixed with PEDOT: PSS as a conductive filler, and polyacrylic acid (PAA) was used as ink binder to prepare PEDOT/GO conductive ink. The results of key performance characterization show that the overall performance of the ink is the optimal, when its first ratio of the PEDOT to the binder is 4.8:1, and the second ratio of the GO to the PEDOT is 2.5‰.

Abstract:The dispersity of graphene (GE) in the matrix has an important influence on the thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of its derived composites. In this paper, surface modification with a silane coupling agent and a double injection method were used to improve the dispersity of GE in epoxy resin (EP). The thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of modified graphene/epoxy resin composites (modified GE/EP) were investigated by the thermogravimetric analysis, a four-probe method, and the tensile and bending strength. The results reveal that these properties of the composites can be improved significantly by using the modified GE as the filler. The surface of the modified GE/EP composite was smooth when the curing temperature was 75 °C. The weight loss of the modified GE/EP composite was lower than that of pure EP. The tensile and bending strength of modified GE/EP-0.07 (0.07 wt % modified GE) reached 74.65 and 106.21 MPa, respectively. In addition, the resistivity of modified GE/EP-0.1 (0.1 wt % modified GE) decreased to 52 Ω·cm, which was lower than that of CB/EP-1 (1 wt % carbon black, 95 Ω·cm) and Ag/EP-50 (50 wt % Ag particles, 102 Ω·cm). It is worth noting that the percolation threshold of the modified GE/EP composites was 0.025 vol % modified GE. These results show that the modified GE/EP composites have a potential application in conductive ink when the modified GE is used as the conductive filler.

Abstract:In the vast field of conductive inks, graphene-based nanomaterials, including chemical derivatives such as graphene oxide as well as carbon nanotubes, offer important advantages as per their excellent physical properties. However, inks filled with carbon nanostructures are usually based on toxic and contaminating organic solvents or surfactants, posing serious health and environmental risks. Water is the most desirable medium for any envisioned application, thus, in this context, nanocellulose, an emerging nanomaterial, enables the dispersion of carbon nanomaterials in aqueous media within a sustainable and environmentally friendly scenario. In this work, we present the development of water-based inks made of a ternary system (graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes and nanocellulose) employing an autoclave method. Upon controlling the experimental variables, low-viscosity inks, high-viscosity pastes or self-standing hydrogels can be obtained in a tailored way. The resulting inks and pastes are further processed by spray- or rod-coating technologies into conductive films, and the hydrogels can be turned into aerogels by freeze-drying. The film properties, with respect to electrical surface resistance, surface morphology and robustness, present favorable opportunities as metal-free conductive layers in liquid-phase processed electronic device structures.

Abstract:We report the exfoliation of graphite in aqueous solutions under high shear rate [∼ 108 s-1] turbulent flow conditions, with a 100% exfoliation yield. The material is stabilized without centrifugation at concentrations up to 100 g/L using carboxymethylcellulose sodium salt to formulate conductive printable inks. The sheet resistance of blade coated films is below ∼2Ω/□. This is a simple and scalable production route for conductive inks for large-area printing in flexible electronics.

Abstract:Stable aqueous carbon inks, with graphene sheets (GSs) and carbon black (CB) as conductive fillers, are prepared by a simple one-pot ball-milling method. The as-prepared composite ink with 10 wt% GSs shows optimized rheological properties (viscosity and thixotropy) for screen printing. The as-printed coatings based on the above ink are uniform and dense on a polyimide substrate, and exhibit a sandwich-type conductive three dimensional network at the microscale. The resistivity of the typical composite coating is as low as 0.23±0.01 Ω cm (92±4 Ω sq−1, 25 µm), which is 30% as that of a pure CB coating (0.77±0.01 Ω cm). It is noteworthy that the resistivity decreases to 0.18±0.01 Ω cm (72±4 Ω sq−1, 25 µm) after a further rolling compression. The coating exhibits good mechanical flexibility, and the resistance slightly increases by 12% after 3000 bending cycles. With the CB/GSs composite coatings as a flexible conductor, fascinating luminescent bookmarks and membrane switches were fabricated, demonstrating the tremendous potential of these coatings in the commercial production of flexible electronics and devices.

Abstract:High quality bio‐graphite is obtained by graphitization of sustainably sourced biomass, leading to crystal sizes that exceed that of spheroidized natural graphite. Life cycle analyses of pre‐carbonization and iron‐catalyzed graphitization steps highlight improvements in sustainability compared to incumbent routes to produce graphite. Electrical conductivity of printed patterns from graphene prepared with bio‐graphite exceeds all existing bio‐based carbon materials. Graphite is a commonly used raw material across many industries and the demand for high‐quality graphite has been increasing in recent years, especially as a primary component for lithium‐ion batteries. However, graphite production is currently limited by production shortages, uneven geographical distribution, and significant environmental impacts incurred from conventional processing. Here, an efficient method of synthesizing biomass‐derived graphite from biochar is presented as a sustainable alternative to natural and synthetic graphite. The resulting bio‐graphite equals or exceeds quantitative quality metrics of spheroidized natural graphite, achieving a Raman ID/IG ratio of 0.051 and crystallite size parallel to the graphene layers (La) of 2.08 μm. This bio‐graphite is directly applied as a raw input to liquid‐phase exfoliation of graphene for the scalable production of conductive inks. The spin‐coated films from the bio‐graphene ink exhibit the highest conductivity among all biomass‐derived graphene or carbon materials, reaching 3.58 ± 0.16 × 104 S m−1. Life cycle assessment demonstrates that this bio‐graphite requires less fossil fuel and produces reduced greenhouse gas emissions compared to incumbent methods for natural, synthesized, and other bio‐derived graphitic materials. This work thus offers a sustainable, locally adaptable solution for producing state‐of‐the‐art graphite that is suitable for bio‐graphene and other high‐value products.

Abstract:Graphene-based printable inks are advanced and promising candidates for flexible printed electronic devices. To develop large-scale graphene-based highly conductive electronics based on existing printing approaches of the material, it is imperative to scale up its ink production methods and optimize the electrical properties of the printed films. Here, a sustainable approach is reported for preparing high-conductive screen-printing graphene ink by recycling cellulose solvents. The ink uses Cyrene solvent in circulation and produces highly concentrated and conductive graphene ink to conquer the limitation of graphene inks in massive industrial production brought by the high cost of the cellulose solvents. A systematic study of the sheet resistance variation with the number of cycles has been carried out. The average conductivity of the ink can exceed 3 × 10 4 S m − 1 , with only a 2-hours shear exfoliation process, which exhibits about the same conductivity of recent works (using toxic NMP solvent, complex centrifugation, ultrasonication, etc.) but with much more straightforward and cost-effective fabrication process. The formulation of graphene inks allows flexible metal-free far-field tag antenna to be screen-printed and integrated with an off-the-shelf sensory chip to achieve battery-free wireless UHF RFID far-field temperature sensing. The high responsiveness, accuracy, and sensitivity of the RFID sensing tag were observed with instantaneous detection of accurate and reliable wireless data transmission.

Abstract:By introducing polyaniline nanofibers (PaniNFs) as a stabilizer during the conversion of graphene oxide to graphene in an aqueous medium under ultrasound, the aggregation of the intermediates and products was effectively suppressed. A stable dispersion of PaniNFs and graphene (G) with a high concentration was obtained. This method represents a convenient and potential route to prepare a PaniNF-G dispersion on a large scale, which may increase the applications of graphene. Vacuum filtration of the dispersion yields a high-quality self-supporting PaniNF/G composite film, whose electrical conductivity can be increased by rinsing with hydrochloric acid.

Abstract:The rapid development of the printing electronics industry had promoted the development of conductive inks. The conductive fillers of carbon-based conductive inks had the characteristics of wide source, low price and good stability, and had great application value. This paper analyzed the performance of carbon-based conductive inks with different raw material ratios. The conductive inks having a graphene content of 16%, 18%, 20%, and 22% were numbered A, B, C, and D, the resistivity and fineness of the four sets of inks were measured, and the printability of the carbon-based conductive ink in the practical application of the screen printing circuit was investigated. The experimental results showed that the resistivity decreases with the increase of graphene content, and the resistivity of conductive ink D was the smallest, which was 10.26 Ω cm; the fineness increases with the increase of graphene content, and the value was within the range of screen printing ink fineness. When the graphene content was 22%, the conductivity was better, and the quality of the screen printing sample wasalso higher.
