Abstract:Numerical forecasts of plasma convective instability in the postsunset equatorial ionosphere are made based on data from the Ionospheric Connections Explorer satellite (ICON) following the method outlined in a previous study. Data are selected from pairs of successive orbits. Data from the first orbit in the pair are used to initialize and force a numerical forecast simulation, and data from the second orbit are used to validate the results 104 min later. Data from the IVM plasma density and drifts instrument and the MIGHTI red‐line thermospheric winds instrument are used to force the forecast model. Thirteen (16) data set pairs from August (October), 2022, are considered. Forecasts produced one false negative in August and another false negative in October. Possible causes of forecast discrepancies are evaluated including the failure to initialize the numerical simulations with electron density profiles measured concurrently. Volume emission 135.6‐nm OI profiles from the Far Ultraviolet (FUV) instrument on ICON are considered in the evaluation.

Retrieval and Analysis of Thermospheric Mass Densities below 200 Km Altitude Based on Precise Orbit Data of the Re-Entry Objects SZ-10 MODULE and TIANGONG 1

Abstract:Atmospheric mass densities in the lower thermosphere below 200 km have not been adequately determined, but they are crucial for reentry prediction of space objects. In this paper, based on precise orbit data of the re-entry objects SZ-10 MODULE and TIANGONG 1 (COSPAR identifiers 2013-029H and 2011-053A, respectively; NORAD catalog numbers 39193 and 37820, respectively), the semi-major axis decay numerical method and the improved energy balance method are adopted to retrieve thermospheric mass densities below 200 km altitude, and a total of 7044 and 4698 points of valid densities data with one-minute temporal resolution are obtained, respectively. Then the retrieved densities after preprocessing are compared with the NRLMSISE-00 empirical model of the atmosphere. It shows that there is an excellent consistency between these two methods with the Pearson correlation coefficients around 1.00, the retrieved densities of which are also in good agreement with the model with the Pearson correlation coefficients above 0.97 (their systematic biases are about 1.1% and 4.5% with standard deviations of about 14% and 20% for these two objects respectively), but the retrieved densities of the semi-major axis decay numerical method have a smaller systematic bias from the model than the results of the improved energy balance method which is computationally more efficient. In addition, the corresponding retrieved densities and their ratios to the model are further analyzed in terms of latitude and local solar time, and the retrieved densities of these two methods are also in good consistency within about 97%. The maximum mean deviations from the model in both dimensions reach about 12%. It reveals the variations of the thermospheric mass densities below 200 km altitude with latitude and local solar time due to solar activity. Additionally, it also indicates that the NRLMSISE-00 model underestimates the thermospheric densities at high solar activity and overestimates the densities at low solar activity, as compared to the retrieved densities that are regarded as true values. The Thermospheric Column O/N2 Ratio

Abstract:More than 2 decades ago, D. J. Strickland and colleagues proposed use of the O/N2 column number density ratio as a new geophysical quantity to interpret thermospheric processes recorded in far ultraviolet (FUV) images of the Earth. This concept has enabled multiple advances in understanding the global behavior of Earth's thermosphere. Nevertheless, confusion remains about the conceptual meaning of the column density ratio, and in the application of this integral quantity. This is so even though it is now a key thermospheric measurement made by current and planned far ultraviolet remote sensing missions in pursuit of new understanding of thermospheric processes and variability. The intent here is to review the historical context of the O/N2 column density ratio, clarify its physical meaning, and resolve misunderstandings evident in the literature. Simple examples elucidate its original derivation for extracting column O/N2 ratios from measurements of the OI 135.6 nm/N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) emission based on an algorithmic synthesis of model precomputations. These are organized in the form of a table lookup of column density ratio as a function of observed radiance ratios. To accommodate generalized solar-geophysical and viewing conditions, the table required to specify the number of needed parameters becomes large. Proposed as an alternative is a simplified, first principles approach to obtaining the column density ratio from the emission ratio. This new methodology is now being applied successfully to FUV measurements made from onboard the Ionospheric CONnection satellite and will be applied retrospectively to the Global Ultraviolet Imager data.

Abstract:The density distribution in the nightside ionosphere has been reconstructed from extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images taken by the EUVI-B imager of the International Space Station Ionosphere, Mesosphere, upper Atmosphere, and Plasmasphere mapping (ISS-IMAP) cameras. The EUVI-B imager covers the wavelength range from about 70 nm to 110 nm and mainly observes the 91.1 nm emission from the recombination of ions and electrons. Assuming that the electron density is equal to the density in the F -region where the imager observes, the EUV intensity observed by EUVI-B is approximately proportional to the line-of-sight integral of the square of the density. This enables us to estimate the density distribution in the F -region from a sequence of EUVI-B data in each International Space Station (ISS) orbit with a Bayesian method. We demonstrate the reconstruction of the distribution. In particular, the density structure of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) in the vicinity of an ISS orbit is obtained.

Abstract:Accurate estimation of thermospheric density is critical for precise modeling of satellite drag forces in low Earth orbit (LEO). Improving this estimation is crucial to tasks such as state estimation, collision avoidance, and re-entry calculations. The largest source of uncertainty in determining thermospheric density is modeling the effects of space weather driven by solar and geomagnetic activity. Current operational models rely on ground-based proxy indices which imperfectly correlate with the complexity of solar outputs and geomagnetic responses. In this work, we directly incorporate NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectral images into a neural thermospheric density model to determine whether the predictive performance of the model is increased by using space-based EUV imagery data instead of, or in addition to, the ground-based proxy indices. We demonstrate that EUV imagery can enable predictions with much higher temporal resolution and replace ground-based proxies while significantly increasing performance relative to current operational models. Our method paves the way for assimilating EUV image data into operational thermospheric density forecasting models for use in LEO satellite navigation processes.

High precision density measurements in the solar corona: I. Analysis methods and results for Fe XII and Fe XIII

Abstract:The EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) instrument on board the Hinode satellite has access to some of the best coronal density diagnostics and the high sensitivity of the instrument now allows electron number density, N_e, measurements to an unprecedented precision of up to +/-5 % in active regions. This paper gives a thorough overview of data analysis issues for the best diagnostics of Fe XII and Fe XIII and assesses the accuracy of the measurements. Two density diagnostics each from Fe XII (186.88/195.12 and 196.64/195.12) and Fe XIII (196.54/202.04 and 203.82/202.04) are analysed in two active region data-sets from 2007 May 3 and 6 that yield densities in the range 8.5 < log N_e < 11.0. The densities are derived using v5.2 of the CHIANTI atomic database. The Fe XII and Fe XIII diagnostics show broadly the same trend in density across the active region, consistent with their similar temperatures of formation. However the high precision of the EIS measurements demonstrates significant discrepancies of up to 0.5 dex in derived log N_e values, with Fe XII always giving higher densities than Fe XIII. The discrepancies may partly be due to real physical differences between the emitting regions of the two plasmas, but the dominant factor lies in the atomic models of the two ions. Two specific problems are identified for Fe XII 196.64 and Fe XIII 203.82: the former is found to be under-estimated in strength by the CHIANTI atomic model, while the high density limit of the 203.82/202.04 is suggested to be inaccurate in the CHIANTI atomic model. The small grating tilt of the EIS instrument is found to be very significant when deriving densities from emission lines separated by more than a few angstroms.

Abstract:Satellites with dual‐frequency Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers can measure integrated electron density, known as slant Total Electron Content (sTEC), between the receiver and transmitter. Precise relative variations of sTEC are achievable using phase measurements on L1 and L2 frequencies, yielding an accuracy of around 0.1 TECU or better. However, CubeSats like Spire LEMUR, with simpler setups (e.g., patch antennas) and code noise in the order of several meters, face limitations in accuracy. Their precision, determined by phase observations, remains in the 0.1–0.3 TECU range. With a substantial number of observations and comprehensive coverage of lines of sight between Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and GNSS satellites, global electron density can be reconstructed from sTEC measurements. Utilizing 27 satellites from various missions, including Swarm, Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment Follow‐On, Jason‐3, Sentinel 1/2/3, COSMIC‐2, and Spire CubeSats, a cubic B‐spline expansion in magnetic latitude, magnetic local time, and altitude is employed to model the logarithmic electron density. Hourly snapshots of the three‐dimensional electron density are generated, adjusting the model parameters through non‐linear least squares based on sTEC observations. Results demonstrate that including Spire significantly enhances estimates, showcasing exceptional agreement with in situ observations from Swarm and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program LEO satellites. The model outperforms contemporary climatological models, such as International Reference Ionosphere (IRI)‐2020 and the neural network‐based NET model. Validation efforts include comparisons with ground‐based sTEC measurements, space‐based vertical TEC from Jason‐3 altimetry, and global TEC maps from the Center for Orbit Determination in Europe and the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ).

Abstract:The two-year prime mission of the NASA Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) is complete. The baseline operational and scientific objectives have been met and exceeded, as detailed in this report. In October of 2019, ICON was launched into an orbit that provides its instruments the capability to deliver near-continuous measurements of the densest plasma in Earth's space environment. Through collection of a key set of in-situ and remote sensing measurements that are, by virtue of a detailed mission design, uniquely synergistic, ICON enables completely new investigations of the mechanisms that control the behavior of the ionosphere-thermosphere system under both geomagnetically quiet and active conditions. In a two-year period that included a deep solar minimum, ICON has elucidated a number of remarkable effects in the ionosphere attributable to energetic inputs from the lower and middle atmosphere, and shown how these are transmitted from the edge of space to the peak of plasma density above. The observatory operated in a period of low activity for 2 years and then for a year with increasing solar activity, observing the changing balance of the impacts of lower and upper atmospheric drivers on the ionosphere.

Recent progress on the retrieval and modeling of thermosphere mass density

Abstract:The thermosphere is the atmospheric layer extending from about 90 km to nearly 1000 kilometers, which is an important interreaction area between the Sun and the Earth. Under the effects of solar radiation flux changes, geomagnetic activities, and low atmospheric forcings, the thermosphere could undergo significant changes. On the other hand, the thermospheric molecule flow collides with space objects, leading to the drag effect, which impacts significantly on the trajectories of space objects. In this paper, we first survey multiple density retrieval methods. The space object tracking data has the advantage of a large amount of data and has long been used for density retrieval since the 1960s. However, the density from this method suffers from low accuracy and time resolution. With the development of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), satellite Precise Orbit Determination (POD) data was utilized to derive thermospheric density with higher accuracy and time resolution. The accelerometers of some geodesic satellites offer the highest accuracy of measurements. Subsequently, three widely-used empirical thermospheric models (Mass Spectrometer Incoherent Scatter MSIS, Jacchia, and Drag Temperature Model DTM) were summarized. The methodologies and data sources were further compared. Based on the derived neutral densities and thermospheric models, several new approaches in improving the previous atmospheric models were overviewed. Since the exospheric temperature is the crucial parameter for empirical models, one of the effective ways to improve models is to modify the exospheric temperature using accelerometer-based densities. The polynomial fitting as well as the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) techniques, were utilized to reconstruct the global density. Other methods such as assimilation and particle filter were also applied to improve atmospheric models. Finally, based on the derived neutral densities, the thermospheric responses to solar and astronomical events such as geomagnetic storms, solar flares, and solar eclipses were further reviewed.
