Abstract:Vector spaces over finite fields and Anzahl formulas of subspaces were studied by Wan (Geometry of Classical Groups over Finite Fields, Science Press, 2002). As a generalization, we study vector spaces and singular linear spaces over commutative rings and obtain some Anzahl formulas of subspaces. Moreover, we discuss arcs and caps by using these formulas.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the world of near-vector spaces allows us to work with non-linear problems and yet, gives access to most of the tools linear algebra has to offer. We establish some fundamental results for near-vector spaces toward extending classical linear algebra to near-linear algebra. In the present paper, we finalize the algebraic proof that any non-empty $F$-subspace stable under addition and scalar multiplication is an $F$-subspace. We demonstrate that any quotient of a near-vector space by an $F$-subspace is a near-vector space and the First Isomorphism Theorem for near-vector spaces. In doing this, we obtain fundamental descriptions of the span. Defining linear independence outside the quasi-kernel, we prove that near-vector spaces are characterized in terms of the existence of a scalar basis, and we obtain a new important notion of basis.

Abstract:The subspace structure of Beidleman near-vector spaces is investigated. We characterize finite dimensional Beidleman near-vector spaces and classify their R-subgroups. We provide an algorithm to compute the smallest R-subgroup containing a given set of vectors. Finally, we classify the subspaces of finite dimensional Beidleman near-vector spaces.

On Vector Spaces with Formal Infinite Sums

Abstract:We discuss possible definitions of categories of vector spaces over a fixed field $\mathbf{k}$ enriched with a notion of formal infinite linear combination in the likes of the formal infinite linear combinations one has in the context of generalized power series. We call these \emph{categories of reasonable strong vector spaces} (c.r.s.v.s.). We show that, in a precise sense, the more general possible definition for a reasonable strong vector space is that of a small $\mathbf{k}$-additive endofunctor of $\mathrm{Vect}_\mathbf{k}$ such that for every cardinal $\lambda$ there are no non-zero natural transformations from $\mathrm{Vect}(\mathbf{k},-)^\lambda /\mathrm{Vect}(\mathbf{k}, -)^{\oplus \lambda}$ to $X$. We denote the category such functors $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$. We compare $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ to the category of ``naive" strong vector spaces $B\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ constructed in a specific way and to the c.r.s.v.s. $K\mathrm{TVect}_s$ of separated linearly topologized spaces that are generated by linearly compact spaces. We study the number of iterations of a natural approximate reflector on $\mathrm{Ind}\text{-}(\mathrm{Vect}^{\text{op}})$ needed to construct the orthogonal reflector onto $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ because it relates to the problem of constructing the smallest subspace of an $X \in \Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ closed under taking infinite linear combinations containing a given linear subspace of $H$ of $X$. We give a complete answer in the case $X$ is $\aleph_1$-ary. Finally we show how the natural monoidal closed structure on $\mathrm{Ind}\text{-}(\mathrm{Vect}^{\text{op}})$ induces one on $\Sigma\mathrm{Vect}$ and apply this to define an infinite-sum-sensitive notion of Kähler differentials for generalized power series. Most of the technical results apply to a more general class of reflective subcategories of $\mathrm{Ind}\text{-}(\mathrm{Vect}^{\text{op}})$.

Abstract:Using the result of the error estimate of the simple extended Newton method established in the present paper for solving abstract inequality systems, we study the error bound property of approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems on Banach spaces with the involved function F being Fréchet differentiable and its derivative F^' satisfying the center-Lipschitz condition (not necessarily the Lipschitz condition) around a point x 0 . Under some mild conditions, we establish results on the existence of the solutions, and the error bound properties for approximate solutions of abstract inequality systems. Applications of these results to finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities on Banach spaces are presented and the error bound properties of approximate solutions of finite/infinite systems of inequalities/equalities are also established. Our results extend the corresponding results in [ 3 , 18 , 19 ].

Abstract:Let $A$ be a non-CM simple abelian variety over a number field $K$. For a place $v$ of $K$ such that $A$ has good reduction at $v$, let $F(A,v)$ denote the Frobenius field generated by the corresponding Frobenius eigenvalues. Assuming $A$ has connected monodromy groups, we show that the set of places $v$ such that $F(A,v)$ is isomorphic to a fixed number field has upper Dirichlet density zero. Assuming the GRH, we give a power saving upper bound for the number of such places.

Abstract:We prove some novel multi-parameter point-line incidence estimates in vector spaces over finite fields. While these could be seen as special cases of higher-dimensional incidence results, they outperform their more general counterparts in those contexts. We go on to present a number of applications to illustrate their use in combinatorial problems from geometry and number theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a classical counting problem for non-degenerate forms of symplectic and hermitian type defined on a vector space: given a subspace $\pi$, we find the number of non-singular subspaces that are trivially intersecting with $\pi$ and span a non-singular subspace with $\pi$. Lower bounds for the quantity of such pairs where $\pi$ is non-singular were first studied in ``Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Finite Fields Appl., 2022)'', which was later improved in ``Glasby, Ihringer, Mattheus (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2023)'' and generalised in ``Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Linear Algebra Appl., 2022)''. In this paper, we derive explicit formulae, which allow us to give the exact proportion and improve the known lower bounds.

Abstract:For d⩾2 and an odd prime power q , consider the vector space Fqd over the finite field Fq , where the distance between two points (x1,...,xd) and (y1,...,yd) is defined as ∑i=1d(xi−yi)2 . A distance graph is a graph associated with a nonzero distance to each of its edges. We show that large subsets of vector spaces over finite fields contain every nearly spanning distance tree with bounded degree in each distance. This quantitatively improves results by Bennett, Chapman, Covert, Hart, Iosevich, and Pakianathan on finding distance paths, and results by Pham, Senger, Tait, and Thu on finding distance trees. A key ingredient in proving our main result is to obtain a colorful generalization of a classical result of Haxell about finding nearly spanning bounded‐degree trees in an expander.

A point-variety incidence theorem over finite fields, and its applications

Abstract:Incidence problems between geometric objects is a key area of focus in the field of discrete geometry. Among them, the study of incidence problems over finite fields have received a considerable amount of attention in recent years. In this paper, by characterizing the singular values and singular vectors of the corresponding incidence matrix through group algebras, we prove a bound on the number of incidences between points and varieties of a certain form over finite fields. Our result leads to a new incidence bound for points and flats in finite geometries, which improves previous results for certain parameter regimes. As another application of our point-variety incidence bound, we prove a result on pinned distance problems by Phuong et al. and Cilleruelo et al. under a weaker condition.

Characterization of vector spaces by isomorphisms

Abstract:A vector space is commonly defined as a set that satisfies several conditions related to addition and scalar multiplication. However, for beginners, it may be hard to immediately grasp the essence of these conditions. There are probably a fair number of people who have wondered if these conditions could be substituted with ones that seem more straightforward. This paper presents a simple characterization of a finite-dimensional vector space, using the concept of an isomorphism, aimed at readers with a fundamental understanding of linear algebra. An intuitive way to understand an $N$-dimensional vector space would be to perceive it as a set (equipped with addition and scalar multiplication) that is isomorphic to the set of all column vectors with $N$ components. The method proposed in this paper formalizes this intuitive understanding in a straightforward manner. This method is also readily extendable to infinite-dimensional vector spaces. While this perspective may seem trivial to those familiar with algebra, it may be useful for those who have just started learning linear algebra and are contemplating the above question. Moreover, this approach can be generalized to free semimodules over a semiring.
