Abstract:We studied linear mappings in Beidleman near-vector spaces and explored their matrix representations using $R$-bases of $R$-subgroups. Additionally, we developed algorithms for determining the seed number and seed sets of $R$-subgroups within finite-dimensional Beidleman near-vector spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the world of near-vector spaces allows us to work with non-linear problems and yet, gives access to most of the tools linear algebra has to offer. We establish some fundamental results for near-vector spaces toward extending classical linear algebra to near-linear algebra. In the present paper, we finalize the algebraic proof that any non-empty $F$-subspace stable under addition and scalar multiplication is an $F$-subspace. We demonstrate that any quotient of a near-vector space by an $F$-subspace is a near-vector space and the First Isomorphism Theorem for near-vector spaces. In doing this, we obtain fundamental descriptions of the span. Defining linear independence outside the quasi-kernel, we prove that near-vector spaces are characterized in terms of the existence of a scalar basis, and we obtain a new important notion of basis.

Abstract:In solar interior, it is the equilibrium velocity distribution of few high-energy protons and nuclei that participates in determining nuclear fusion reaction rates. So, it is inappropriate to use the Maxwellian velocity distribution to calculate the rates of solar nuclear fusion reactions. We have to use the relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution for the purpose. The nuclear fusion reaction rate based on the relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution has a reduction factor with respect to that based on the Maxwellian distribution. The reduction factor depends on the temperature, reduced mass and atomic numbers of the studied nuclear fusion reactions, in other words, it varies with the sort of neutrinos. Substituting the relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution for the Maxwellian distribution is not important for the calculation of solar sound speeds. The relativistic equilibrium velocity distribution, if adopted in standard solar models, will lower solar neutrino fluxes and change solar neutrino energy spectra but maintain solar sound speeds. This velocity distribution is possibly a solution to the solar neutrino problem.

Abstract:Let $V$ denote an $r$-dimensional $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$-vector space. Let $U$ and $W$ be $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $V$, $L_U$ and $L_W$ the projective points of $\mathrm{PG}\,(V,q^n)$ defined by $U$ and $W$ respectively. We address the problem when $L_W=L_U$ under the hypothesis that $U$ and $W$ have maximum dimension, i.e., $\dim_{\mathbb{F}_q} W=\dim_{\mathbb{F}_q}U=$ $rn-n $, and we give a complete characterization for $r=2$.

An inductive approach to representations of general linear groups over compact discrete valuation rings

Abstract:In his seminal Lecture Notes in Mathematics published in 1981, Andrey Zelevinsky introduced a new family of Hopf algebras which he called {\em PSH-algebras}. These algebras were designed to capture the representation theory of the symmetric groups and of classical groups over finite fields. The gist of this construction is to translate representation-theoretic operations such as induction and restriction and their parabolic variants to algebra and coalgebra operations such as multiplication and comultiplication. The Mackey formula, for example, is then reincarnated as the Hopf axiom on the algebra side. In this paper we take substantial steps to adapt these ideas for general linear groups over compact discrete valuation rings. We construct an analogous bialgebra that contains a large PSH-algebra that extends Zelevinsky's algebra for the case of general linear groups over finite fields. We prove several base change results relating algebras over extensions of discrete valuation rings.

Abstract:We develop a theory of Valuation Hilbert Modules and prove a version of Beurling's theorem for these. Then we apply our version of Beurling's theorem to obtain complete descriptions of the closed invariant subspaces of a number of Hilbert spaces of analytic functions in several complex variables, including $H^2$ of the polydisk the ball, and bounded symmetric domains, and weighted $A^2$ spaces on complex analytic manifolds.

Abstract:The study of linear codes over a finite field of odd cardinality, derived from determinantal varieties obtained from symmetric matrices of bounded rank, was initiated in a recent paper by the authors. There, one found the minimum distance of the code obtained from evaluating homogeneous linear functions at all symmetric matrices with rank, which is, at most, a given even number. Furthermore, a conjecture for the minimum distance of codes from symmetric matrices with ranks bounded by an odd number was given. In this article, we continue the study of codes from symmetric matrices of bounded rank. A connection between the weights of the codewords of this code and Q-numbers of the association scheme of symmetric matrices is established. Consequently, we get a concrete formula for the weight distribution of these codes. Finally, we determine the minimum distance of the code obtained from evaluating homogeneous linear functions at all symmetric matrices with rank at most a given number, both when this number is odd and when it is even.

Abstract:In \cite{GQ2008} R. Gow and R. Quinlan have cast a new look on the endomorphism algebra of a $K$-vector space $V$ of dimension $n$ assuming that $K$ has a Galois extension $L$ of degree $n$. In this approach the $K$-space $L$ may serve as a model for $V$ and Galois-theoretic ideas and results may be applied to elucidate the structure of endomorphisms and other important objects of linear algebra. In particular, this leads to the clarification of the structure of a rank-one endomorphism, trace of an endomorphism, criteria for linear indepedence etc. We present an exposition of these results using the language of tensor algebra wherever possible to provide shorter and more conceptual proofs.

Abstract:We continue the study of level numbers and level vectors of a bounded linear operator between normed linear spaces. We prove that every linear operator on a finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach space possesses only finitely many level numbers. We also explore the level numbers of weighted permutation operators between lp spaces. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of approximate level numbers and study its properties and relation with level numbers. In particular, our results indicate that the concept of level numbers can be potentially applied to the spectral theory of operators, in the setting of normed linear spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we give some characterisations of homomorphisms on von Neumann algebras by linear preservers. We prove that a bounded linear surjective map from a von Neumann algebra onto another is zero-product preserving if and only if it is a homomorphism multiplied by an invertible element in the centre of the image algebra. By introducing the notion of tr-rank of the elements in finite von Neumann algebras, we show that a unital linear map from a linear subspace ℳ of a finite von Neumann algebra ℛ into ℛ can be extended to an algebraic homomorphism from the subalgebra generated by ℳ into ℛ; and a unital self-adjoint linear map from a finite von Neumann algebra onto itself is completely tr-rank preserving if and only if it is a spatial *-automorphism.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the rank-1-preserving linear maps on nest algebras of Hilbert-space operators. We obtain several characterizations of such linear maps and apply them to show that a weakly continuous linear bijection on an atomic nest algebra is idempotent preserving if and only if it is a Jordan homomorphism, and in turn, if and only if it is an automorphism or an anti-automorphism.

Abstract:We study the question how many subgroups, cosets or subspaces are needed to cover a finite Abelian group or a vector space if we have some natural restrictions on the structure of the covering system. For example we determine, how many cosets we need, if we want to cover all but one element of an Abelian group. This result is a group theoretical extension of the theorem of Brouwer, Jamison and Schrijver about the blocking number of an affine space. We show that these covering problems are closely related to combinatorial problems, including the so called additive basis conjecture, the three-flow conjecture, and a conjecture of Alon, Jaeger and Tarsi about nowhere zero vectors.

Linear Codes Associated to Symmetric Determinantal Varieties: Even Rank Case

Abstract:We consider linear codes over a finite field of odd characteristic, derived from determinantal varieties, obtained from symmetric matrices of bounded ranks. A formula for the weight of a code word is derived. Using this formula, we have computed the minimum distance for the codes corresponding to matrices upper-bounded by any fixed, even rank. A conjecture is proposed for the cases where the upper bound is odd. At the end of the article, tables for the weights of these codes, for spaces of symmetric matrices up to order $5$, are given. We also correct typographical errors in Proposition 1.1/3.1 of [3], and in the last table, and we have rewritten Corollary 4.9 of that paper, and the usage of that Corollary in the proof of Proposition 4.10.

Spaceability of sets of non-injective maps

Abstract:Generalizing a recent result on lineability of sets of non-injective linear operators, we prove, for quite general linear spaces $A$ of maps from an arbitraty set to a sequence space, that, for every $0 \neq f \in A$, the subset of $A$ of non-injective maps contains an infinite dimensional subspace of $A$ containing $f$. We provide aplications of the main result to spaces of linear operators between quasi-Banach spaces, to spaces of linear operators belonging to an operator ideal, and, in the nonlinear setting, to linear spaces of homogeneous polynomials and to linear spaces of vector-valued Lispshitz functions on metric spaces.
