Abstract:We extend the inequality of Tomboulis and Yaffe in SU(2) lattice gauge theory (LGT) to SU(N) LGT and to general classical spin systems, by use of reflection positivity. Basically the inequalities guarantee that a system in a box that is sufficiently insensitive to boundary conditions has a non-zero mass gap. We explicitly illustrate the theorem in some solvable models. Strong coupling expansion is then utilized to discuss some aspects of the theorem. Finally a conjecture for exact expression to the off-axis mass gap of the triangular Ising model is presented. The validity of the conjecture is tested in multiple ways.

On the equivalence between n-state spin and vertex models on the square lattice

Abstract:In this paper we investigate a correspondence among spin and vertex models with the same number of local states on the square lattice with toroidal boundary conditions. We argue that the partition functions of an arbitrary $n$-state spin model and of a certain specific $n$-state vertex model coincide for finite lattice sizes. The equivalent vertex model has $n^3$ non-null Boltzmann weights and their relationship with the edge weights of the spin model is explicitly presented. In particular, the Ising model in a magnetic field is mapped to an eight-vertex model whose weights configurations combine both even and odd number of incoming and outcoming arrows at a vertex. We have studied the Yang-Baxter algebra for such mixed eight-vertex model when the weights are invariant under arrows reversing. We find that while the Lax operator lie on the same elliptic curve of the even eight-vertex model the respective $\mathrm{R}$-matrix can not be presented in terms of the difference of two rapidities. We also argue that the spin-vertex equivalence may be used to imbed an integrable spin model in the realm of the quantum inverse scattering framework. As an example, we show how to determine the $\mathrm{R}$-matrix of the 27-vertex model equivalent to a three-state spin model devised by Fateev and Zamolodchikov.

O(n) Spin Systems- Some General Properties: A Generalized Mermin-Wagner-Coleman Theorem, Ground States, Peierls Bounds, and Dynamics

Abstract:Here we examine O(n) systems with arbitrary two spin interactions (of unspecified range) within a general framework. We shall focus on translationally invariant interactions. In the this case, we determine the ground states of the $O(n \ge 2)$ systems. We further illustrate how one may establish Peierls bounds for many Ising systems with long range interactions. We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on the ground states and derive the corresponding fluctuation integrals. The study of the thermal fluctuation spectra will lead us to discover a very interesting odd-even $n$ (coupling-decoupling) effect. We will prove a generalized Mermin-Wagner-Coleman (integral divergence) theorem for all translationally invariant interactions in two dimensions with an analytic kernel in momentum space. We will show that many three dimensional systems have smectic like thermodynamics. We will examine the topology of the ground state manifolds for both translationally invariant and spin glass systems. We conclude with a discussion of O(n) spin dynamics in the general case.

Violation of Ferromagnetic Ordering of Energy Levels in Spin Rings for the Singlet

Abstract:We demonstrate a violation of the ``ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels'' conjecture (FOEL) for even length spin rings. The FOEL conjecture was a guess made by Nachtergaele, Spitzer and an author for the Heisenberg model on certain graphs: a family of inequalities, the first of which is the statement that the spectral gap of the Heisenberg model equals the gap of the random walk. That first guess was originally a conjecture of Aldous which was later proved by Caputo, Liggett and Richthammer. We claim that for spin rings of even length $L>4$, the lowest spin $S=0$ energy is lower than the lowest spin $S=1$ energy. This violates the $(L/2)$-th inequality in the FOEL conjecture. Our methodology is largely numerical: we have applied exact diagonalization up to $L=20$. We also rigorously consider the Hamiltonian of the Heisenberg spin ring for even length $L$ projected to the spin $S=0$ sector. We prove that it has a unique ground state. Then, using the single mode approximation the uniqueness explains the energy turn-around. Important insight comes from reconsideration of previous work by Sutherland, using the Bethe ansatz. Especially important is a work of Dhar and Shastry that goes beyond the Bethe ansatz.

Abstract:This article introduces the notion of good labellings for asymptotic lattices in order to study joint spectra of quantum integrable systems from the point of view of inverse spectral theory. As an application, we consider a new spectral quantity for a quantum integrable system, the quantum rotation number. In the case of two degrees of freedom, we obtain a constructive algorithm for the detection of appropriate labellings for joint eigenvalues, which we use to prove that, in the semiclassical limit, the quantum rotation number can be calculated on a joint spectrum in a robust way, and converges to the well-known classical rotation number. The general results are applied to the semitoric case where formulas become particularly natural.

Abstract:We provide a rigorous proof of the absence of nontrivial local conserved quantities in all spin-1/2 chains with symmetric nearest-neighbor interaction, except for known integrable systems. This result shows that there are no further integrable system that awaits to be discovered. Our finding also implies that there is no intermediate systems with a finite number of nontrivial local conserved quantities. In addition, we clarify all short-support conserved quantities in non-integrable systems, which we need to take into account in analyses of thermalization and level statistics.

Counterexamples to a Weitz-Style Reduction for Multispin Systems

Abstract:In a seminal paper, Weitz showed that for two-state spin systems, such as the Ising and hardcore models from statistical physics, correlation decay on trees implies correlation decay on arbitrary graphs. The key gadget in Weitz's reduction has been instrumental in recent advances in approximate counting and sampling, from analysis of local Markov chains like Glauber dynamics to the design of deterministic algorithms for estimating the partition function. A longstanding open problem in the field has been to find such a reduction for more general multispin systems like the uniform distribution over proper colorings of a graph. In this paper, we show that for a rich class of multispin systems, including the ferromagnetic Potts model, there are fundamental obstacles to extending Weitz's reduction to the multispin setting. A central component of our investigation is establishing nonconvexity of the image of the belief propagation functional, the standard tool for analyzing spin systems on trees. On the other hand, we provide evidence of convexity for the antiferromagnetic Potts model.

Abstract:A remarkable connection has been established for antiferromagnetic 2-spin systems, including the Ising and hard-core models, showing that the computational complexity of approximating the partition function for graphs with maximum degree D undergoes a phase transition that coincides with the statistical physics uniqueness/non-uniqueness phase transition on the infinite D-regular tree. Despite this clear picture for 2-spin systems, there is little known for multi-spin systems. We present the first analog of the above inapproximability results for multi-spin systems. The main difficulty in previous inapproximability results was analyzing the behavior of the model on random D-regular bipartite graphs, which served as the gadget in the reduction. To this end one needs to understand the moments of the partition function. Our key contribution is connecting: (i) induced matrix norms, (ii) maxima of the expectation of the partition function, and (iii) attractive fixed points of the associated tree recursions (belief propagation). The view through matrix norms allows a simple and generic analysis of the second moment for any spin system on random D-regular bipartite graphs. This yields concentration results for any spin system in which one can analyze the maxima of the first moment. The connection to fixed points of the tree recursions enables an analysis of the maxima of the first moment for specific models of interest. For k-colorings we prove that for even k, in the tree non-uniqueness region (which corresponds to k<D) it is NP-hard, unless NP=RP, to approximate the number of colorings for triangle-free D-regular graphs. Our proof extends to the antiferromagnetic Potts model, and, in fact, to every antiferromagnetic model under a mild condition.

Complete Classification of Integrability and Non-integrability for Spin-1/2 Chain with Symmetric Nearest-Neighbor Interaction

Abstract:General spin-1/2 chains with symmetric nearest-neighbor interaction are studied. We rigorously prove that all spin models in this class, except for known integrable systems, are non-integrable in the sense that they possess no nontrivial local conserved quantities. This result confirms that there are no missing integrable systems, i.e., integrable systems in this class are exactly those that are already known. In addition, this result excludes the possibility of intermediate systems which have a finite number of nontrivial local conserved quantities. Our findings support the expectation that integrable systems are exceptional in quantum many-body systems and most systems are non-integrable.

Abstract:We study quantum many-body systems in the presence of an exotic antiunitary translation or inversion symmetry involving time reversal. Based on a symmetry-twisting method and spectrum robustness, we propose that a half-integer spin chain that respects any of these two antiunitary crystalline symmetries in addition to the discrete Z2×Z2 global spin-rotation symmetry must either be gapless or possess degenerate ground states. This explains the gaplessness of a class of chiral spin models not indicated by the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorem and its known extensions. Moreover, we present symmetry classes with minimal sets of generators that give nontrivial Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type constraints, argued by the bulk-boundary correspondence in 2D symmetry-protected topological phases as well as lattice homotopy. Our results for detecting the ingappability of 1D quantum magnets from the interplay between spin-rotation symmetries and magnetic space groups are applicable to systems with a broader class of spin interactions, including Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and triple-product interactions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.136705 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Upper and lower bounds are given for the number of equivalence classes of error patterns in the toric code for quantum memory. The results are used to derive a lower bound on the ground-state energy of the +/-J Ising spin glass model on the square lattice with symmetric and asymmetric bond distributions. This is a highly non-trivial example in which insights from quantum information lead directly to an explicit result on a physical quantity in the statistical mechanics of disordered systems.

Abstract:As part of the proof of the Bethe ansatz conjecture for the Gaudin model for $\mathfrak{gl}_n$, Mukhin, Tarasov, and Varchenko described a correspondence between inverse Wronskians of polynomials and eigenspaces of the Gaudin Hamiltonians. Notably, this correspondence afforded the first proof of the Shapiro-Shapiro conjecture. In the present paper, we give an identity in the group algebra of the symmetric group, which allows one to establish the correspondence directly, without using the Bethe ansatz.

Abstract:Investigating translationally invariant qudit spin chains with a low local dimension, we ask what is the best possible tradeoff between the scaling of the entanglement entropy of a large block and the inverse-polynomial scaling of the spectral gap. Restricting ourselves to Hamiltonians with a "rewriting" interaction, we find the pair-flip model, a family of spin chains with nearest neighbor, translationally invariant, frustration-free interactions, with a very entangled ground state and an inverse-polynomial spectral gap. For a ground state in a particular invariant subspace, the entanglement entropy across a middle cut scales as $\log n$ for qubits (it is equivalent to the XXX model), while for qutrits and higher, it scales as $\sqrt{n}$. Moreover, we conjecture that this particular ground state can be made unique by adding a small translationally-invariant perturbation that favors neighboring letter pairs, adding a small amount of frustration, while retaining the entropy scaling.
