A Biogeographical Debate at the Origins of Limnology in Switzerland and Italy: The Issue over Pelagic Fauna Between Pietro Pavesi and François-Alphonse Forel

Abstract:This article explores the early biogeographical debates that shaped the beginning of limnology, focusing on the differences of opinion concerning the origins of pelagic fauna between two pioneering scientists: Pietro Pavesi and François-Alphonse Forel. The study examines how Pavesi's hypothesis of a marine origin for pelagic fauna contrasts with Forel's theory of passive distribution, situating their arguments within a broader Darwinian framework. The first part of the paper provides a historical overview of Italian limnology, highlighting Pavesi's contributions and interpreting Forel's writings to underscore the significance of discovering pelagic fauna in conceptualizing lakes as microcosms. The second part compares Pavesi's and Forel's hypotheses, emphasizing their impact on the scientific understanding of freshwater ecosystems. The importance of this discovery, in both historical and scientific contexts, lies in recognizing the presence of plankton in lakes as a crucial element for the mature formulation of ecological concepts, such as the ecosystem.

A critical review on marine litter in the Adriatic Sea: Focus on plastic pollution

Abstract:Marine litter affects various habitats across the world. This review focuses on the Adriatic region, considering the presence of marine litter as well as microplastics (mPs) and macroplastics (MPs) in different environments (water, beach, seabed and biota). Data from 53 scientific papers were critically analysed, providing a snapshot of this type of contamination, and evidencing critical issues. The final part of the review provides considerations on spatial and temporal trends, comparing data with the available information provided by transport forecasting models. It emerges that the most investigated areas are those most subjected to the contribution of rivers, tourism or have the greatest relevance to nature conservation. Our analysis also reveals that, even though many international research projects have played a fundamental role in the creation of shared methods and protocols, currently available data are difficult to compare. Nevertheless, our results enhance knowledge of the state of the art in the research carried out so far, and on the situation regarding pollution due to the marine litter in the Adriatic Sea, as well as highlighting avenues for future investigation.

Abstract:Coastal lagoons are transitional environments between continental and marine aquatic systems. Globally, coastal lagoons are of great ecological and socioeconomic importance as providers of valuable ecosystem services. However, these fragile environments are subject to several human pressures, including pollution by microplastics (MPs). The aim of this review was to identify and summarize advances in MP pollution research in coastal lagoons across the world. We consider peer-reviewed publications on this topic published in English and Spanish between 2000 and April 21, 2022, available in Scopus and Google Scholar. We found 57 publications with data on MP abundances and their characteristics in 50 coastal lagoons from around the world, 58% of which have some environmental protection status. The number of publications on this type of pollution in lagoons has increased significantly since 2019. Methodological differences amongst studies of MPs in coastal lagoons were nevertheless a limiting factor for wide-ranging comparisons. Most studies (77%) were conducted in single environmental compartments, and integration was limited, hampering current understanding of MP dynamics in such lagoons. MPs were more abundant in lagoons with highly populated shores and watersheds, which support intensive human activities. On the contrary, lagoons in natural protected areas had lower abundances of MPs, mostly in sediments and organisms. Fiber/filament and fragment shapes, and polyethylene, polyester, and polypropylene polymers were predominant. MPs had accumulated in certain areas of coastal lagoons, or had been exported to the sea, depending on the influence of seasonal weather, hydrodynamics, anthropogenic pressures, and typology of MPs. It is advised that future research on MP pollution in coastal lagoons should focus on methodological aspects, assessment/monitoring of pollution itself, MP dynamics and impacts, and prevention measures as part of a sound environmental management.

Abstract:Abstract Long‐term research provides a unique perspective on environmental processes, dynamics of populations and communities of organisms, and emergent properties of ecosystems. Many key ecological relationships can be obscured in short term studies by common features such as time lags, natural variability, nonlinear relationships, interactive drivers, or relatively slow processes. Aquatic ecosystems have yielded major scientific discoveries through long‐term research, through both observational and experimental studies. These research results have ranged from the detection of multi‐decadal climate oscillation effects on ecosystems to finer‐scale understanding of the trophic and biogeochemical pathways through which nutrient pollution affects water quality. In this special issue of Limnology and Oceanography , the contributing authors demonstrate that—whether designed for the monitoring of managed natural resources, to answer fundamental scientific questions, or both—long‐term research enables researchers to move far beyond their initial questions as unexpected dynamics are revealed over time. With the widespread maturation of long‐term data sets and rapid emergence of new technologies that enhance research capabilities, opportunities for synthesizing knowledge are now creating unprecedented opportunity for scientific discovery that builds on this legacy of long‐term aquatic research.

Abstract:This study is aimed to characterize the shallow groundwater system in the coastal area between the Uniti and Bevano rivers (southern part of the Po plain), where salinization is threatening the coastal ecosystems and posing a major environmental issue for the phreatic water management in the coast. A thin rainwater lens is present at the top of the aquifer in the backshore area and its extent has a seasonal variability. These few centimetres of freshwater represent a thin interface between sea water and the delicate coastal ecosystems, such as those of dunes and wetlands. To have a better understanding of the changes in groundwater chemistry, we performed a seasonal monitoring of the water quality at the top of the aquifer. Effective concentrations of chemicals and actual values of physical‐chemical parameters in the rainwater lens could be measured by means of auger holes. The analysis of the cation‐exchange process in the aquifer was made through the application of the Base Exchange index (BEX index) of Stuyfzand (2008), an indicator of salinization or freshening of waters. The results pointed out that a salinization process is taking place in the largest part of the aquifer. Extension and chemical composition of the rainwater lens are strongly influenced by anthropogenic factors such as drainage and land use. The surface water bodies are all brackish to salty and characterized by anoxic and reducing conditions. At present, only halophytes are present around the dune slacks, which have turned into brackish to hypersaline lakes. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:This special issue provides an overview of recent advances in the study of chironomids (Diptera chironomidae), as an outcome of the 20th International Symposium on Chironomidae held in Trento (Italy), in July 2017. it includes 27 selected papers, representative of the six topics of the symposium: genetics and cytogenetics, taxonomy and systematics, autecology and physiology, toxicology and adaptive biology, ecology and biomonitoring, palaeolimnology. Most papers emphasise the value of chironomids in the monitoring programmes, mainly on Europe and case histories from South America and Africa. however, as our title indicates, the reported contemporary studies represent a range from the genetic through the autecological to the ecosystem scale. the aim of the volume is to give new insights on ecology and biology of non-biting midges, the freshwater insect family that comprises the highest number of species in the world, in both lentic and lotic habitats.
