Abstract:Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) concentrations are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1; available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.964012, Lønborg et al., 2023) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g. chlorophyll a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations of concentrations from all continents. However, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62 338 data points for DOC, 20 356 for DON, and 13 533 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average ± standard deviation (SD): 182±314 µmol C L−1; median: 103 µmol C L−1) is 13-fold higher than the average coastal DON concentration (13.6±30.4 µmol N L−1; median: 8.0 µmol N L−1), which is itself 39-fold higher than the average coastal DOP concentration (0.34±1.11 µmol P L−1; median: 0.18 µmol P L−1). This dataset will be useful for identifying global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and will help facilitate the reuse of DOC, DON, and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterizing local biogeochemical processes; closing nutrient budgets; estimating carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous pools; and establishing a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters.

Abstract:The global carbon cycle is strongly modulated by organic carbon (OC) sequestration and decomposition. Whereas OC sequestration is relatively well constrained, there are few quantitative estimates of its susceptibility to decomposition. Fjords are hot spots of sedimentation and OC sequestration in marine sediments. Here, we adopt fjords as model systems to investigate the reactivity of sedimentary OC by assessing the distribution of the activation energy required to break OC bonds. Our results reveal that OC in fjord sediments is more thermally labile than that in global sediments, which is governed by its unique provenance and organo-mineral interactions. We estimate that 61 ± 16% of the sedimentary OC in fjords is degradable. Once this OC is remobilized and remineralized during glacial maxima, the resulting metabolic CO 2 could counterbalance up to 50 ppm of the atmospheric CO 2 decrease during glacial times, making fjords critical actors in dampening glacial-interglacial climate fluctuations through negative carbon cycling loops.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are active transitional ecotones between land and ocean, and are considered as hot spots of organic matter processing within the global carbon cycle, which dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role. In this study, combined use of ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) and complementary optical techniques was conducted to assess the detailed molecular composition of DOM in the temperate Liaohe coastal wetland (LCW), NE China in respect to the differences in DOM composition from surface water to sediment pore water. Significant positive correlations between salinity and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were observed in both surface waters and pore waters. Pore water DOM is generally characterized by lower protein-like fluorescence and biological index, but higher humification and humic-like fluorescent components than those in surface water DOM. Corresponding to the optical properties, FT-ICR MS measurements show that pore water DOM has higher proportions of heteroatoms, aromaticity index, O/C ratios, unsaturated aliphatics, and peptides, but lower average H/C ratios compared to surface water DOM across locations with different marsh plant species (rice (Oryza sativa), reed (Phragmites australis), Seablite (Suaeda Salsa)) and salinity (0.5 to 51.5 psu). The results suggest that selective preservation for polyphenols, lignin degradation intermediates (highly unsaturated compounds), and microbial resynthesis of heteroatomic compounds are involved in the processing of DOM from surface water to pore water, leading to the formation of higher molecular weight and sulfur-containing molecules. The abundant CHOS compounds could be related to the early diagenetic sulfurization of DOM in sediments. Our unique data set should provide new clues for a comprehensive understanding of the molecular dynamics of DOM in coastal wetlands.

Abstract:From stream headwaters to the deep ocean, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is ubiquitous across the world's aquatic systems, where it fulfills important biogeochemical and ecological functions. Importantly, DOC is a dynamic component of the carbon cycle and represents a global reservoir (mass of carbon) equivalent in size to the atmospheric CO 2 pool. The mobilization, transport, and transformations of DOC along the land-ocean aquatic continuum biogeochemically connect terrestrial landscapes, freshwater and marine ecosystems, and the atmosphere. As a result, DOC budgets are vulnerable to climate- and human-driven changes. Having the ability to quantify DOC stocks, fluxes, and transformations consistently and accurately in aquatic systems is therefore critical to our understanding of DOC's functions in the environment and of their susceptibility to change. In recent years, optical techniques and synoptic earth observations have opened new doors to achieve this objective on a global scale. In this review, we explore how in situ measurements, earth observations, and the models they inform have facilitated the large-scale quantification of DOC stocks, fluxes, and transformations along the land-ocean aquatic continuum and how they have helped shape our current understanding of the global DOC cycle. The review also explores the limitations and challenges we still face today, and discusses how upcoming and future sensors are expected to provide new insights into our understanding of the global DOC cycle.

Abstract:With almost 700 Pg of carbon, marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) stores more carbon than all living biomass on Earth combined. However, the controls behind the persistence and the spatial patterns of DOC concentrations on the basin scale remain largely unknown, precluding quantitative assessments of the fate of this large carbon pool in a changing climate. Net removal rates of DOC along the overturning circulation suggest lifetimes of millennia. These net removal rates are in stark contrast to the turnover times of days to weeks of heterotrophic microorganisms, which are the main consumers of organic carbon in the ocean. Here, we present a dynamic "MICrobial DOC" model (MICDOC) with an explicit representation of picoheterotrophs to test whether ecological mechanisms may lead to observed decadal to millennial net removal rates. MICDOC is in line with >40,000 DOC observations. Contrary to other global models, the reactivity of DOC fractions is not prescribed, but emerges from a dynamic feedback between microbes and DOC governed by carbon and macronutrient availability. A colimitation of macronutrients and organic carbon on microbial DOC uptake explains >70% of the global variation of DOC concentrations, and governs characteristic features of its distribution. Here, decadal to millennial net removal rates emerge from microbial processes acting on time scales of days to weeks, suggesting that the temporal variability of the marine DOC inventory may be larger than previously thought. With MICDOC, we provide a foundation for assessing global effects on DOC related to changes in heterotrophic microbial communities in a future ocean.

Environmental Drivers of Dissolved Organic Matter Molecular Composition in the Delaware Estuary

Abstract:Estuaries as connectors of freshwater and marine aquatic systems are hotspots of biogeochemical element cycling. In one of the best studied temperate estuaries, the Delaware Estuary (USA), we investigated the variability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) over five sampling cruises along the salinity gradient in August and November of 3 consecutive years. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations were more variable in the upper reaches of the estuary (245 ± 49 μmol DOC L−1) than at the mouth of the estuary (129 ± 14 μmol L−1). Bulk DOC decreased conservatively along the transect in November but was non-conservative with increased DOC concentrations mid-estuary in August. Detailed analysis of the solid-phase extractable DOM pool via ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry (Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, FT-ICR-MS) revealed compositional differences at the molecular level that were not reflected in changes in concentration. Besides the mixing of terrestrial and marine endmember signatures, river discharge levels and biological activity impacted DOM molecular composition. DOM composition changed less between August and November than along the salinity gradient. Relative contributions of presumed photolabile DOM compounds did not reveal non-conservative behavior indicative of photochemical processing, suggesting that on the timescales of estuarine mixing photochemical removal of molecules plays a minor role in the turbid Delaware Bay. Overall, a large portion of molecular formulae overlapped between sampling campaigns and persisted during estuarine passage. Extending the analysis to the structural level via the fragmentation of molecular masses in the FT-ICR-MS, we found that the relative abundance of isomers along the salinity gradient did not change, indicating a high structural similarity of aquatic DOM independent of the origin. These results point toward a recalcitrant character of the DOM supplied by the Delaware River. We demonstrate that in addition to bulk DOC quantification, detailed information on molecular composition is essential for constraining sources of DOM and to identify the processes that impact estuarine DOM, thereby controlling amount and composition of DOM eventually discharged to the ocean through estuaries.

Abstract:Wetlands are integral to the global carbon cycle, serving as both a source and a sink for organic carbon. Their potential for carbon storage will likely change in the coming decades in response to higher temperatures and variable precipitation patterns. We characterized the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition from 12 different wetland sites across the USA spanning gradients in climate, landcover, sampling depth, and hydroperiod for comparison to DOM in other inland waters. Using absorption spectroscopy, parallel factor analysis modeling, and ultra‐high resolution mass spectroscopy, we identified differences in DOM sourcing and processing by geographic site. Wetland DOM composition was driven primarily by differences in landcover where forested sites contained greater aromatic and oxygenated DOM content compared to grassland/herbaceous sites which were more aliphatic and enriched in N and S molecular formulae. Furthermore, surface and porewater DOM was also influenced by properties such as soil type, organic matter content, and precipitation. Surface water DOM was relatively enriched in oxygenated higher molecular weight formulae representing HUPHigh O/C compounds than porewaters, whose DOM composition suggests abiotic sulfurization from dissolved inorganic sulfide. Finally, we identified a group of persistent molecular formulae (3,489) present across all sites and sampling depths (i.e., the signature of wetland DOM) that are likely important for riverine‐to‐coastal DOM transport. As anthropogenic disturbances continue to impact temperate wetlands, this study highlights drivers of DOM composition fundamental for understanding how wetland organic carbon will change, and thus its role in biogeochemical cycling.

We use serial oxidation experiments to measure the quantitative distribution of carbon isotopes inside the DOC reservoir, allowing us to estimate both its cycling timescales and source distribution. We find that a large portion of deep water DOC has a modern radiocarbon age and a fast turnover time supported by particle dissolution. In addition, stable carbon isotopes allow for diverse sources of carbon, besides microbial production, to quantitatively feed this reservoir. Our work suggests a DOC cycle that is far more intricate, and potentially variable on shorter timescales, than previously envisioned.
Driving factors of colored dissolved organic matter dynamics across a complex urbanized estuary

Abstract:The role of estuaries in sourcing and transforming dissolved organic matter - the largest reservoir of organic carbon in the ocean - still presents many unknowns for coastal biogeochemical cycles, and is further complicated by increasing human pressures and a changing climate. Here, we examined the major drivers of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) dynamics in Long Island Sound (LIS), a heavily urbanized estuary of National Significance with a storied water quality past. A comprehensive new optical dataset, including measurements of CDOM absorption and fluorescence signatures, was integrated with biological and hydrological measurements to capture the spatiotemporal heterogeneities of LIS, including its urban-to-rural gradient, dynamic river mouths, and blue carbon ecosystems across seasons, following episodic storm events, and over five years. Results reveal longitudinal gradients in both DOM amount and quality. While carbon-rich and humic terrigenous DOM was dominant in the heavily riverine-influenced Central to Eastern LIS, an uncoupling between CDOM absorption (aCDOM) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration in Western LIS, and a stronger correlation with Chlorophyll-a, indicated increased autochthonous CDOM production. Closer to the New York City urban core, aCDOM was highly correlated to turbidity, consistent with increased wastewater influences. Fluorescence PARAFAC analysis provided strong evidence for seasonal processing of CDOM in LIS, related to increased summertime photochemical degradation of humic-like components and shoulder-season microbial processing. Riverine CDOM export was influenced by discharge amount, residence time, and coastal wetlands acting as additional sources of strongly humic and aromatic organic matter. These measurements allowed us to assess how hydrologic, biological, and anthropogenic processes impact DOM dynamics and, subsequently, biogeochemical variability and trophic status in this complex urbanized estuary, with implications for water quality management and policy. Results discussed here are applicable beyond LIS, as urbanized estuaries globally face similar hydrological and anthropogenic forcings.

Abstract:As major sites of carbon burial and remineralization, continental margins are key components of the global carbon cycle. However, heterogeneous sources of organic matter (OM) and depositional environments lead to complex spatial patterns in sedimentary organic carbon (OC) content and composition. To better constrain the processes that control OM cycling, we focus on the East Asian marginal seas as a model system, where we compiled extensive data on the OC content, bulk isotopic composition (δ13C and Δ14C), total nitrogen, and mineral surface area of surficial sediments from previous studies and new measurements. We developed a spatial machine learning modeling framework to predict the spatial distribution of these parameters and identify regions where sediments with similar geochemical signatures drape the seafloor (i.e., "isodrapes"). We demonstrate that both provenance (44%–77%) and hydrodynamic processes (22%–53%) govern the fate of OM in this margin. Hydrodynamic processes can either promote the degradation of OM in mobile mud‐belts or preserve it in stable mud‐deposits. The distinct isotopic composition of OC sources from marine productivity and individual rivers regulates the age and reactivity of OM deposited on the sea‐floor. The East Asian marginal seas can be separated into three main isodrapes: hydrodynamically energetic shelves with coarser‐grained sediment depleted in OC, OM‐enriched mud deposits, and a deep basin with fine‐grained sediments and aged OC affected by long oxygen exposure times and petrogenic input from rivers. This study confirms that both hydrodynamic processes and provenance should be accounted for to understand the fate of OC in continental margins.

Abstract:The oceans teem with heterotrophic bacterioplankton that play an appreciable role in the uptake of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) derived from phytoplankton net primary production (NPP). As such, bacterioplankton carbon demand (BCD), or gross heterotrophic production, represents a major carbon pathway that influences the seasonal accumulation of DOC in the surface ocean and, subsequently, the potential vertical or horizontal export of seasonally accumulated DOC. Here, we examine the contributions of bacterioplankton and DOM to ecological and biogeochemical carbon flow pathways, including those of the microbial loop and the biological carbon pump, in the Western North Atlantic Ocean (∼39–54°N along ∼40°W) over a composite annual phytoplankton bloom cycle. Combining field observations with data collected from corresponding DOC remineralization experiments, we estimate the efficiency at which bacterioplankton utilize DOC, demonstrate seasonality in the fraction of NPP that supports BCD, and provide evidence for shifts in the bioavailability and persistence of the seasonally accumulated DOC. Our results indicate that while the portion of DOC flux through bacterioplankton relative to NPP increased as seasons transitioned from high to low productivity, there was a fraction of the DOM production that accumulated and persisted. This persistent DOM is potentially an important pool of organic carbon available for export to the deep ocean via convective mixing, thus representing an important export term of the biological carbon pump.

Abstract:The global ocean contains a massive reservoir (662 ± 32 Pg C) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and its dynamics, particularly in the deepest zones, are only slowly being understood. DOC in the deep ocean is ubiquitously low in concentration (~35 to 48 µmol kg−1) and aged (4000 to 6000 years), persisting for multiple meridional overturning circulations. Deep waters relatively enriched in DOC form in the North Atlantic, migrate to the Southern Ocean to mix with waters from Antarctic shelves and the deep Pacific and Indian Oceans, in turn forming the voluminous waters of the Circumpolar Deep Water. Here we seek evidence for local (autochthonous) versus distant (allochthonous) processes in determining the distribution of DOC in the deep Southern Ocean. Prior analyses on DOC in the deep Southern Ocean have conflicted, describing both conservative and nonconservative traits: the deep DOC field has been reported as uniform in distribution, yet local inputs have been suggested as quantitatively important. We use multiple approaches (multiple linear regression, mass transport, and mass balance calculations) with data from Climate Variability and Predictability Repeat Hydrography sections to evaluate the system. We find that DOC concentrations in the deep Southern Ocean largely reflect the conservative mixing of the several deep waters entering the system from the north. Mass balance suggests that the relatively depleted DOC radiocarbon content in the deep Southern Ocean is a conserved property as well. These analyses advance our understanding of the controls on the DOC reservoir of the Southern Ocean. Impacts of Hydrology and Extreme Events on Dissolved Organic Carbon Dynamics in a Heavily Urbanized Estuary and Its Major Tributaries: A View From Space

Abstract:Abstract Dissolved organic matter and its colored component, Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM), play a major role in global carbon budgets, and their fluxes provide an essential link between terrestrial and aquatic biogeochemical cycles. Satellite observations can uniquely capture the hydro‐biogeochemical connectivity of terrestrial and aquatic landscapes, across scales. Yet, accurate satellite retrievals of CDOM and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics remain challenging in urbanized estuaries and coasts. Here, we present an advanced unified algorithm for space‐based retrieval of coastal CDOM and DOC dynamics and its application in Long Island Sound—one of the world's most heavily urbanized estuaries that is becoming increasingly vulnerable to climate change stressors. A rich bio‐optical data set, encompassing a wide range of environmental conditions, was integrated into the algorithm training to retrieve DOC concentrations and CDOM spectral shape (i.e., spectral slope S 275–295 )—a proxy for DOC quality. The new algorithms were applied to full‐resolution satellite imagery from the Sentinel‐3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) after thoroughly evaluating the performance of six ocean color atmospheric correction approaches (ACOLITE, BAC, C2RCC, MUMM, l2gen , and Polymer). Evaluation of the algorithms yielded mean absolute percent differences of 28%, 12%, and 10% for a CDOM (300), S 275–295 , and DOC, respectively. Application of the algorithms to multi‐year satellite OLCI imagery captured, for the first time, the coupled impact of seasonal transitions, wind regimes, freshwater inputs, anthropogenic disturbances, and hydrological extremes (both intense precipitation and droughts) on DOC fluxes and CDOM quality at the ecosystem scale. Results have important implications for improved predictions of coastal biogeochemical fluxes in complex urban−estuary systems.

Abstract:The marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) pool is an important player in the functioning of marine ecosystems. DOC is at the interface between the chemical and the biological worlds, it fuels marine food webs, and is a major component of the Earth's carbon system. Here, we review the research showing impacts of global change stressors on the DOC cycling, specifically: ocean warming and stratification, acidification, deoxygenation, glacial and sea ice melting, changed inflow from rivers, changing ocean circulation and upwelling, and wet/dry deposition. A unified outcome of the future impacts of these stressors on the global ocean DOC production and degradation is not possible, due to regional differences and differences in stressors impacts, but general patterns for each stressor are presented.

A brief overview of modern directions in marine DOC studies part II--recent progress in marine DOC studies

Abstract:Progress made in analytical techniques allows the formulation of new concepts in the biogeochemistry of organic carbon. The second part of our review summarizes the latest evolution and introduces new ideas in the biogeochemistry of marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Via classification of different fractions and sources of DOC, characterization of its composition, age and availability for bacterial utilization, and fate of DOC, we show the role of DOC in the global carbon cycle and the significance of bulk DOC in the oceans. Special emphasis is placed on the microbial loop in the cycling of DOC and its relation with higher trophic levels (phytoplankton and zooplankton). Significant progress has also been made in the study of the roles of colloidal organic material in metal complexation, ultraviolet radiation in dissolved organic matter photochemical oxidation, and chromophore-containing constituents of DOC as the signature of DOC for satellite observations. The importance of bulk DOC in the global carbon cycle requires the inclusion of this fraction in the regional and global carbon models. We predict that future DOC study in the ocean will focus on the development of sophisticated, almost continuously recording, moored DOC instrument arrays for the monitoring of small-scale DOC horizontal and vertical patchiness; widespread time series stations including estuarine, coastal and open environments; more detailed chemical characterization of different fractions of organic carbon from diverse marine habitats; parameterization of predictive models of DOC cycling on regional and global scales, incorporating the microbial loop; and finally, monitoring of DOC dynamics from satellites on regional and global scales.

Abstract:Continental margin systems collectively receive and store vast amounts of organic carbon (OC) derived from primary productivity both on land and in the ocean, thereby playing a central role in the global carbon cycle. The land-ocean interface is however extremely heterogeneous in terms of terrigenous input, marine primary productivity, sediment transport processes and depositional conditions (e.g. such as bottom water oxygen level). Continental margins are also highly dynamic, with processes occurring over a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. The rates of OC burial and oxidation are consequently variable over both space and time, hindering our ability to derive a global picture of OC cycling at the land-ocean interface. Here, we review the processes controlling the fate of organic matter in continental margin sediments, with a special emphasis on “hot spots” and “hot moments” of OC burial and oxidation. We present a compilation of compositional data from a set of illustrative settings, including fjords, small mountainous river margins, large deltaic systems and upwelling areas. Bulk OC stable isotope and radiocarbon compositions reveal the diversity and complexity characteristic of OC buried in marginal seas. This primarily relates to differences in marine and terrestrial inputs, the composition of the terrestrial component (e.g. vascular plant OC, soil, and petrogenic OC inputs), and processes modulating the fate of OC within the marine environment (e.g. priming). This widely contrasting behavior of OC among these systems illustrates that the reactivity of OC is a product of its chemical composition and regional conditions. Interpreted in the context of bulk compositional data as well as that obtained on specific molecular markers (e.g. lignin-derived phenols), the possibility exists to tease apart complex mixtures of terrestrial and marine inputs, and to shed light on the role of the myriad of depositional and post-depositional processes. Finally, we discuss a set of hot topics that warrant further investigation – such as the role of photochemistry, fungi, halogenation and reactive iron in dictating the fate of OC in the (changing) coastal ocean.
The chemical succession in anoxic lake waters as source of molecular diversity of organic matter

Abstract:The aquatic networks that connect soils with oceans receive each year 5.1 Pg of terrestrial carbon to transport, bury and process. Stagnant sections of aquatic networks often become anoxic. Mineral surfaces attract specific components of organic carbon, which are released under anoxic conditions to the pool of dissolved organic matter (DOM). The impact of the anoxic release on DOM molecular composition and reactivity in inland waters is unknown. Here, we report concurrent release of iron and DOM in anoxic bottom waters of northern lakes, removing DOM from the protection of iron oxides and remobilizing previously buried carbon to the water column. The deprotected DOM appears to be highly reactive, terrestrially derived and molecularly distinct, generating an ambient DOM pool that relieves energetic constraints that are often assumed to limit carbon turnover in anoxic waters. The Fe-to-C stoichiometry during anoxic mobilization differs from that after oxic precipitation, suggesting that up to 21% of buried OM escapes a lake-internal release-precipitation cycle, and can instead be exported downstream. Although anoxic habitats are transient and comprise relatively small volumes of water on the landscape scale, our results show that they may play a major role in structuring the reactivity and molecular composition of DOM transiting through aquatic networks and reaching the oceans.

Abstract:Rivers discharge significant quantities of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean, yet biomarker and isotope studies suggest that terrigenous DOC makes up only a small amount DOC in the ocean. One of the removal pathways proposed for riverine DOC is sorption to marine sediments. This process is chemically selective, but whether sorption alters the isotopic composition of riverine DOC is unknown. Because there is isotopic variability across different organic compound classes, sorptive removal of DOC could also alter the isotopic composition of DOC. As a first step in addressing this question, we examined phase partitioning and isotopic composition of a riverine DOC standard in the presence of marine sediment particles. Abstract:Watersheds of the coastal temperate rainforests of Pacific North America export large amounts of organic carbon (OC) to the coastal ocean. While it has been suggested that terrestrially derived organic matter could subsidize marine food webs and affect ocean biogeochemistry along the coastal margin, little work has been done to quantify and characterize OC across the freshwater to marine continuum. We conducted monthly and targeted rainfall event surveys of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC and POC) quantity and quality (δ13C, dissolved organic matter characterization) across a freshwater to marine salinity gradient between Calvert and Hecate Islands, British Columbia, Canada. Freshwater DOC concentrations (9.97 ± 0.25 mg L−1) far exceeded those in marine waters (1.24 ± 0.03 mg L−1), while POC concentrations were similar across all sites (0.23 ± 0.01 mg L−1). δ13C‐DOC and ‐POC in freshwaters were constant, but varied seasonally at the marine stations with freshwater and marine processes. Rainfall events facilitated the rapid export of terrestrial DOC and POC to coastal waters, altering water quality and potentially subsidizing microbial productivity across marine surface waters. On an annual basis, primary production in marine waters (21–42 Gg C) exceeded total freshwater OC contributions (1.8–2.2 Gg C); however, freshwater exports were more important during the autumn and winter months, when rainfall was highest and primary production was limited by shorter days and deep turbulent mixing. Our results highlight the importance of storms for connecting the coastal temperate rainforest with surface coastal waters, especially during the summer when connectivity between the freshwater and marine ecosystems is otherwise low.
