Experimental Hematology Bridging the Gap between Laboratory and Clinic:Hope of Hematology——Invited Editorial

Abstract:This article summarizes the progress of hematology in the recent tens years to show that experimental hematology used to pick up the 'hints' from clinical problems as the renewal of research directions and targets in experimental studies continuously.As the feedback,the results from lab investigations inserted into clinical practice and eventually made a quick modernization of hematology,which was actually a good model for the "translational research".The past few decades have witnessed tremendous advances in our understanding of normal hematopoiesis where genes dictate,epigenetics regulate,transcription factors mediate,and stem cells self-renew and differentiate.Dissection of disease pathogenesis not only elucidates molecular basis of disorders including hemoglobinopathy,aplastic anemia,hemophilia,hematopoietic malignancies such as leukemia and myeloproliferative disorders,but also provides therapeutic targets for drug development.Introduction of targeted therapies and combinatory targeting therapies greatly benefits hundreds of thousands of patients,and even turns acute promyelocytic leukemia from highly fatal to highly curable.In the 21st century the experimental hematology is entering the era of genomics and system biomedicine,and the pace of progress extrapolates to a prediction of hematologic neoplasms control in this century.

Abstract:Welcome to the start of another year with Seminars in Thrombosis and Hemostasis (STH), this being my 16th year anniversary as Editor in Chief, so still a teenager! In contrast, 2024 marks the 50th birthday of STH, which first published in 1974.[1] A half century of publishing is a landmark worthy of celebration. We started the celebrations in 2022, when we published our first Celebratory issue.[2] A second Celebratory issue was published in 2023.[3] Both issues were rich with content of a historical nature related to the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis. The current issue represents the third in the series of historical papers. We plan to prepare a fourth and final compilation later in this year. As now standard for these "welcome" editorials, I will again sincerely thank all past and current contributors to STH over the many years, as well as to all past, current, and future Guest Editors who commit their time to advance STH, and of course the current and past Editorial teams. There has been no major overhaul of the general editorial team at the time of writing, although some adjustments will continue to occur over the coming years. However, in 2024, we do bid farewell to some of our senior editors. Professor Hau Kwaan has decided to retire from STH, after 10 years as a Senior Editor. Professor Kwaan first contributed to STH in 1979,[4] just a few years after STH began publishing, and so representing 45 years of association with this journal—a much longer tenure than my own. Also departing as Senior Editors are Anne Mett Hvas and Ton Lisman. Professor Hvas was recently appointed dean of the Faculty of Health at Aarhus University,[5] and she felt she could not commit sufficient time to continue on as a Senior Editor. Professor Hvas was a Senior Editor of STH from 2021. Ton Lisman was recently appointed as the new (co-)editor in chief of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis,[6] and thus could not remain on as a Senior Editor of STH. Professor Lisman was Senior Editor of STH from 2015. Both Anne Mett Hvas and Ton Lisman will stay on as Associate Editors of the journal, and we hope them the best for their future roles and success in the field. To help fill the void of their departure, we are 'promoting' Kristi Smock (USA) and Julie Brogaard Larsen (Denmark) from our editorial board to positions as Senior Editors. Both have contributed to several Guest Editorial positions in the past. Kristi Smock completed two issues around 'Laboratory Diagnostics' with Co-Guest Editor Robert Gosselin in 2022[7] and 2023[8], and is currently compiling a third issue with Co-Guest Editor Karen Moffat. Julie Brogaard Larsen has Co-Guest edited several past issues of STH from 2017[9] [10] [11], and is currently Co-Guest Editing her 4th issue of STH on the topic of Cancer with Tua Gyldenholm. We welcome Kristi and Julie into their new Senior Editor positions, and look forward to their further contributions to our journal. I also take this opportunity to once again thank the journal production team at Thieme Medical Publishers for their high production standards and for facilitating both the print and online issues of the journal, and in particular, Mansi Agarwal, the current Production Editor for STH, and her production team. This annual Editorial once represented the opportunity to reflect on our journal's Impact Factor and other journal metrics. However, because of the continuing move to online publication ahead of print publication, a separate detailed editorial was published on these topics late last year.[12] In addition to detailing information on the journal's Impact Factor, in part in comparison to trends from other journals publishing in the Thrombosis and Hemostasis space, I also shared many other publication metrics. I will summarize the information on Impact Factor as follows: (1) the 2022 Impact Factor was 5.7, which marked an anticipated decrease over the 2021 Impact Factor, which was 6.938; (2) in turn, the 2021 Impact Factor for STH marked a substantive increase over the 2020 Impact Factor, which was 4.180, and the 2019 Impact Factor, which was 2.892; (3) the 2021 Impact Factor of 6.398 also represents the highest Impact Factor ever achieved by STH, and this was largely due to some highly cited papers related to COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019); (4) the previous highest Impact Factor (4.524) was 10 years ago in 2011; (5) in general, most thrombosis and hemostasis focused journals showed an increase in Impact Factor from 2020 to 2021, largely on the back of several highly cited COVID-19-related papers, and then a subsequent fall in 2022 due to "waning interest" in COVID-19. As I always do for the Welcome Editorial, I confirm that we, as always, will continue to develop plans for the future content of this journal, and we are confident that our journal will be able to continue to bring its readers the high-quality journal that is expected of us. Currently confirmed topics for issues that we plan to publish over the next 12 or so months are listed in [Table 1]. Naturally, we recognize the need to retain some flexibility in our plans, and to potentially add additional material of current interest and controversy as the need arises. Notably, COVID-19 continues to create havoc for us, although many of us have returned to routines similar to pre-COVID times. Nevertheless, the pandemic has led us to create a continuing series of issues specifically focused on thrombosis and hemostasis in COVID-19,[2] [3] [4] and now also including the current issue of the journal. It is likely that as we head back to "business as usual," this will be the last issue of STH specifically focused on COVID-19. In the future, COVID-19 material accepted for publication in STH will be placed in our standard "non-themed" composite issues. Accuracy of Diagnosis and Individualization of Treatment: the Way of Treating Hematologic Malignancies

Abstract:Just as the new year is beginning, we present to you a special issue focusing on the haematological diseases. Some reviews and study papers included in this issue present and discuss the latest progress in the treatment of acute leukemia, the recent advancements in immunotherapy for lymphoma, the latest progress in the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), and so on. In respect of acute leukemia, the risk stratification and individualized treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), specifically, are relatively better explored. The discovery of new molecular markers and gene mutations is pushing further stratification of favorable-risk and intermediate-risk patients with normal karyotype risk in the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines.[1] Hypomethylating agents (HMAs) have been playing an important role in the treatment of AML and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS).[2] The combination of HMA and histone deacetylase, a novel domestic anti-neoplastic agent, has shown promising results, especially in elderly patients. However, the intensity of chemotherapy depends on the patients’ age, general status, and comorbidities. MDS and AML are aging malignancies with high incidence in the elderly; combined with the geriatric assessment, the evaluation of the general status and comorbidities of elderly patients will provide a direct basis for determining the intensity of individualized treatment.[3] These relevant topics are all discussed in this issue. Immunotherapy, including the use of monoclonal antibodies and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, has achieved remarkable results in the field of lymphoma treatment. The low toxicity of the novel antibody therapy allows it to be used not only in salvage treatment for refractory and relapsed lymphoma, but also in initial treatment for elderly patients. The miscellaneous efficacy of CAR T cells has been enhanced via successive improvements in laboratory technology.[4] However, although the use of CAR T therapy has been flourishing in recent years, its significance in enabling a new era of treatment modes is far greater than its actual effects. A review in this issue introduces in detail the above-mentioned advances made in immunotherapy. With a rapid increase in the number of clinical cases, the American Society of Hematology's 2018 Education Program duly promoted the consensus on and guidelines for the evaluation and treatment of such treatment complications and toxicities.[5] The treatment of MM by autologous hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation (auto-HSCT) is still not out of date in the new drug era, and its importance as the standard treatment for MM has not declined. However, the proportion of patients with MM receiving auto-HSCT in China is far lower than the proportions in Western Europe and North America. The reasons are that agents of the conditioning regimen are not as easily available in the Chinese domestic market, and additionally, there are unsatisfactory mobilization effects of traditional regimens in elderly patients undergoing long-term treatment. The emergence of a new mobilizer, Plerixafor, has greatly improved mobilization efficiency; in the present issue, there is a review summarizing the progress in this area. It is worth mentioning that, in addition to the above, the understanding of the significance of auto-HSCT for MM treatment needs to be improved. Infection is an important, and potentially lethal, complication during the treatment of hematologic malignancies that might hinder treatment success. Prospective studies on infectious diseases in this patient group are still lacking. In recent years, owing to the increasing number of “migratory birds” people, the study of the epidemiology of pathogens in tropical climates has increased and will provide useful information for the understanding of infectious diseases in this special population. Hence, the study regarding infectious with hematologic malignancies in the tropical climates will be present in the later. We hope that you will find the contents of this journal valuable for your professional knowledge. Celebrating a century of APMIS: a legacy of pathology, microbiology, and immunology

Abstract:This manuscript commemorates the 100th anniversary of APMIS, highlighting its evolution from a regional journal, founded in 1924 as Acta Pathologica et Microbiologica Scandinavica, to an international platform fostering global collaboration in pathology, microbiology, and immunology. The journal's inception was driven by Ulrik Quensel's vision in 1919, leading to the establishment of the Northern Pathological Society and the launch of the journal in 1924. APMIS has consistently published landmark research, including significant contributions from prominent. These studies have advanced understanding in fields such as pathology, microbiology, and immunology. The journal expanded its scope in the 1970s to include immunology, rebranding as APMIS in the mid‐1980s. Recent decades have seen a continued commitment to cutting‐edge research and an increasing impact factor. As APMIS transitions to an Open Access model under Wiley, it will be renamed the PMI Journal (Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology) to reflect its global reach and dedication to scientific excellence. This centennial celebration acknowledges the contributions of editors, authors, and readers, looking forward to future advancements in biomedical research.

Guidance in author instructions of hematology and oncology journals: A cross sectional and longitudinal study

Abstract:Background: The debate about the value of biomedical publications led to recommendations for improving reporting quality. It is unclear to what extent these recommendations have been endorsed by journals. We analyzed whether specific recommendations were included in author instructions, which journal characteristics were associated with their endorsement, how endorsement of the domains changed and whether endorsement was associated with change of impact factor between 2010 and 2015. Methods: We considered two study samples consisting of "Hematology" and "Oncology" journals of the Journal Citation Report 2008 and 2014, respectively. We extracted information regarding endorsement of the (1) recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, of (2) reporting guidelines, (3) requirement for trial registration and (4) disclosure of conflicts of interest. Data extraction was done by reading the author instructions before conducting a text search with keywords. We calculated a global generalized linear mixed effects model for endorsement of each of the four domains followed by separate multivariable logistic regression models and a longitudinal analysis. We defined endorsement as the author instructions saying that they approve the use of the recommendations. Results: In 2015, the ICMJE recommendations were mentioned in author instructions of 156 journals (67.5%). CONSORT was referred to by 77 journals (33.3%); MOOSE, PRISMA, STARD and STROBE were referred to by less than 15% of journals. There were 99 journals (42.9%) that recommended or required trial registration, 211 (91.3%) required authors to disclose conflicts of interest. Journal impact factor, journal start year and geographical region were positively associated with endorsement of any of the four domains. The overall endorsement of all domains increased between 2010 and 2015. The endorsement of any domain in 2010 seemed to be associated with an increased impact factor in 2014. Conclusion: Hematology and oncology journals endorse major recommendations to various degrees. Endorsement is increasing slowly over time and might be positively associated with the journals' impact factor.

Abstract:With our traditional January Editorial and Editors' Choice,[1] we are delighted to welcome you in the New Year! May it be filled with fresh challenges and developments! Along with our personal and scientific lives, we noted for the first time since 2020 that publications in 2023 clearly moved away from the pandemic scope.[1] While we were relieved to be able to live our lives "normally" again, and were excited to meet our community at meetings, we have learnt along the way. Our Editorial Meeting has now moved to a digital format, allowing more of our Section Editors around the world to take part at the same time and achieve a more productive outcome, while Elinor Switzer from the publisher's team was delighted to meet and catch up with you at the ISTH Thieme Booth last year ([Fig. 1]). Disparities in Global Authorship and Data Source in the Pediatric Blood and Cancer Journal 2011–2021: Realities and Strategies for Improvement

Abstract:Background Research expands knowledge and improves outcomes. Research is needed in all settings, but most often occurs in high‐income countries (HIC) compared to low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs). Publication in scientific peer‐reviewed journals and authorship position are important for academic/clinical advancement. We explored the current state of global authorship and data source distribution for publications in the Pediatric Blood and Cancer (PBC) journal. Procedure LMIC‐affiliated author inclusion and position in selected article categories of the PBC (2011–2021) were recorded. Articles with at least one LMIC‐affiliated author (first‐listed affiliation) and 5% of exclusively HIC‐authored articles were verified. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed. Results Of 4504 articles reviewed, 593 (13%) included at least one LMIC‐affiliated author (517/593 [87%] as first author and 488/593 [82%]) as senior author. In a subset of articles with LMIC‐sourced data, 148/675 (22%) included exclusively HIC authors. Within the LMIC‐sourced data subset, 81/675 (12%) articles were mixed HIC/LMIC affiliation and 446/675 (66%) were exclusively LMIC‐affiliated. The frequency of LMIC‐affiliated authors as first or senior author within HIC/LMIC‐affiliated collaborations was 31/81 (38%) and 9/81 (11%), respectively. Conclusion As more than 80% of children live in LMICs and the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer is increasingly engaged across LMICs, all researchers/clinicians must justly be given an opportunity to conduct, write, publish, and be recognized for their research. PBC is uniquely poised to promote equitable publishing practices and opportunities for professional recognition by drawing on emerging best practices for equitable authorship, including potentially restructuring authorship guidelines and requirements.

Abstract:Since the publication of the first issue of Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, we have witnessed advances in multiple research areas that have culminated in improved outcomes for many cancer types, although substantial unmet needs remain for a majority of patients worldwide. Here, we have asked experts in several key specialities to reflect on the progress from the past 20 years and propose the next steps to enable further advances. Although we are aware that this Viewpoint cannot provide full coverage of the vast field that is clinical oncology, we hope that these messages inspire a diverse range of readers.

Abstract:Welcome to another editorial relating to our celebration of 50 years of publishing for Seminars in Thrombosis & Hemostasis (STH). As noted several times previously, 2024 marks the 50th birthday of STH, which first published in 1974.[1] A half-century of publishing is a landmark worthy of celebration. We started the celebrations in 2022, when we published our first 50th year celebratory issue.[2] A second celebratory issue was published in 2023,[3] and a third compilation was published as the first issue of 2024.[4] All issues were rich in content of a historical nature related to the fields of thrombosis and hemostasis. We plan to prepare a 4th and final 50th year celebratory compilation later in this year. In the interim, we plan to publish a separate tribute to the rich history of STH in each issue of STH publishing in 2024. For the first issue of 2024, we republished the first paper ever published in STH, on the molecular structure of fibrinogen,[5] together with an accompanying commentary from Neerman-Arbez and Casini.[6] In the next few issues of STH, we will republish the most highly cited publications from STH of all time, as also accompanied by commentaries from experts in these specific featured fields. This editorial is accompanying the second issue of STH for 2024 and provides two tables that outline the most highly cited papers from STH. [Table 1] identifies the 100 manuscripts that have been most highly cited over the entire publication history of STH, starting from the first paper published in 1974.[5] These papers have a citation count of 119 or more. Naturally, in such a listing, papers published earlier in the STH publication timeline have considerable advantage in terms of overall citations compared to more recent publications. However, this is still an important analysis for our journal. I would like to make a few comments on this listing. First, three of the papers on the top 100 list were authored by the founding editor in chief of STH, Eberhard F. Mammen. This included two papers on the platelet function analyzer (PFA)-100.[7] [8] It is likely that these papers helped the manufacturer obtain regulatory approvals for clinical use of the PFA-100 in hemostasis laboratories. Another paper on the PFA-100, the first full report to describe the instrument,[9] is understandably also a highly cited paper, listing third on the table. Another paper on the PFA-100 in [Table 1] is my own contribution,[10] written as a tribute to Eberhard Mammen, following his passing in 2008.[11] [12] STH has published several more recent publications mentioning the PFA-100, including its recent remodeling as the PFA-200.[13] [14] [15] Rank Citation Publication year 1 Baskurt OK, Meiselman HJ.
