Abstract:Two-phase rotating detonation ramjets are considered to be suitable for aerospace applications due to their high thermodynamic cycle efficiency. These engines have an extremely complex internal flow field, in which the liquid fuel undergoes physical and chemical processes such as fragmentation, evaporation, mixing, and combustion; these processes also interact with detonation waves that have significant gradients. This makes it difficult to simulate a three-dimensional (3D) full-process rotating detonation combustion chamber. Here, based on the Euler–Lagrangian simulation method, a 3D numerical combustion chamber was simulated using kinetic theory and the constant thermal physical property parameter (TPPP) calculation method. The accuracy of these methods was then compared with the existing experimental results and theoretical values. Calculating the TPPPs using kinetic theory brought about a relatively high-pressure peak and detonation wave temperature; the detonation wave profile was also finer and more precise. The detonation wave propagation velocity of the two-phase detonation is estimated to be about 60% of the theoretical gas-phase CJ velocity. The calculation method of physical parameters has relatively little influence on the engine's operating frequency and the detonation wave's propagation velocity but has a more significant influence on the peak pressure. Constant TPPPs can be used when the Kelvin–Helmholtz–Rayleigh–Taylor model with insufficient precision is used to consider the breakup of droplets and leads to the acceleration of the propagation speed of two-phase detonation waves.

Abstract:For high-Mach-number incoming flow circumstances, a rotating detonation ramjet engine configuration is proposed in this research. By installing supporting blocks at the rear of the combustor, this configuration achieves continuous rotating detonation operation. Based on the Comparison of the flow structures obtained from the engine configuration with and without the supporting block before and after detonation ignition respectively, we obtain the intrinsic mechanism of detonation wave's propagation and re-initiation under the action of the supporting block. The supporting block creates a deflagration wave that is almost stationary before detonation ignition. In the detonation-ignited state, the deflagration wave is continually formed and traveling upstream under the influence of the supporting block, which is analogous to the periodical before detonation ignition of a transverse wave structure. The dynamic deflagration wave will cause the incomplete reactants behind the detonation wave to burn as the intensity of the detonation wave decreases. As a result, the incident shock wave is transformed into a Mach stem to achieve the re-initiation of the detonation wave.

Abstract:A numerical simulation of an annular rotating detonation engine with stoichiometric hydrogen–oxygen is performed. A generic, well-posed, and easily implemented approach using a quasi-two-dimensional method to model the area variations through the rotating detonation engine’s injector and combustor is presented. The detonation–injector interaction is studied for the case with a ratio of four between the combustor and injector’s throat areas. A shock wave is formed in the divergent portion of the injector due to the high backpressure created by the detonation in the combustor. A Favre-averaged steady-state analysis of stream lines and particle paths reveals that the shock causes an irrecoverable loss of stagnation pressure. Stagnation pressure gain in the combustor is insufficient to make up for the loss, and the flow leaves the engine with lower stagnation pressure than in the plenum.

Abstract:Rotating detonation engines have high thermal efficiency and thus have been extensively studied. Using solid particles as fuel can reduce costs, and experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of gas-solid two-phase rotating detonation. However, numerical simulation research is required that examines the flow field characteristics of a rotating detonation engine. In order to explore the role of carbon particle fuel in a gas-solid two-phase rotating detonation wave, the weighted essentially non-oscillating scheme and third-order total variation diminishing Runge-Kutta scheme are used to solve the gas-solid unsteady Eulerian–Eulerian equations. Finite rate chemical and surface reaction models are used to simulate the combustion of gaseous substances and carbon particles. The influence of the proportion of carbon particles in the fuel and the diameter of the carbon particles on the rotating detonation flow field characteristics is analyzed. The results indicate that when the size of carbon particles is in the micrometer scale or below, the two-phase rotating detonation waves exhibit double-front or single-front detonation structures, respectively. Adding carbon particles to the fuel enables the rotating detonation engine to achieve a total pressure gain.

Abstract:A series of 3- and 2-dimensional numerical simulations of a rotating detonation engine (RDE) are carried out with a 1-step chemical reaction model to investigate the RDE's propulsive performance. First, the performance is computed by a 3-dimensional simulation. After the initial instability dies down, the specific impulse and mass flux of RDE converge to constant values. Then, some simplified 2-dimensional cases are simulated. The following propulsive performance collusions are obtained: with the injection stagnation pressure increases, the mass flux increases linearly and the specific impulse decreases a little. With combustor length larger than a special value, specific impulse and mass flux change a little. The propulsive parameters obtained from the 3-dimensional simulation case agree with simplified 2-dimensional simulation cases.

Abstract:Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) are the most promising pressure-gain combustion devices, but their long-duration operations are hindered by the harsh thermal environment inside the chamber. This study analyzes the instantaneous and average heat loads on chamber walls of RDEs based on the newly developed unsteady conjugate heat transfer (CHT) OpenFOAM solver named multiRegionBYRFoam. To enhance accuracy in predicting heat transfer characteristics compared to decoupled simulations focusing solely on fluid or solid behavior, three-dimensional CHT simulations are conducted for a premixed H2/air annular RDE coupling the detonation simulation with heat conduction in both inner and outer chamber walls. The transient time evolutions of wall heat flux in RDEs are numerically captured for the first time and agree well with experiments. The calculated peak wall heat flux is 1.98 MW/m2 at the inner wall and 2.63 MW/m2 at the outer wall when a single detonation wave propagates with a mass flow rate of 0.227 kg/s. By investigating the influence of inlet flow conditions and detonation modes, valuable guidelines on designing efficient thermal management systems for RDEs are obtained: larger mass flow rates and multi-wave modes result in higher average wall heat flux; the heat flux at the outer wall exceeds that at the inner wall while both walls require effective cooling for gas turbine engines with a rotating detonation combustor. Furthermore, a novel heat transfer model for RDEs is proposed based on a thermal operation map depicting total heat transfer rates to describe the nonlinear impact of mass flow rate and number of detonation waves, which can be employed to predict total wall heat loads under specific operation conditions of RDE.

Abstract:This article presents two dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) computational analysis of rotating detonation combustion (RDC) in annular chambers using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver ANSYS-Fluent V13. The applicability of ANSYS-Fluent to predict the predominant phenomena taking place in the combustion chamber of a rotating detonation combustor is assessed. Simulations are performed for stoichiometric Hydrogen-Air combustion using two different chemical mechanisms. First, a widely used one-step reaction mechanism that uses mass fraction of the reactant as a progress variable, then a reduced chemical mechanism for H2-Air combustion including NOx chemistry was employed. Time dependent 2D and 3D simulations are carried out by solving Euler equations for compressible flows coupled with chemical reactions. Fluent user defined functions (UDF) were constructed and integrated into the commercial CFD solver in order to model the micro nozzle and slot injection system for fuel and oxidizer, respectively. Predicted pressure and temperature fields and detonation wave velocities are compared for the two reaction mechanisms. Curvature effects on the properties of transverse detonation waves are studied by comparing the 2D and 3D simulations. The effects of diffusion terms on RDC phenomena are assessed by solving full Navier-Stokes equations and comparing the results with those from Euler equations. Computational results are compared with experimentally measured pressure data obtained from the literature. Results show that the detonation wave velocity is over predicted in all the simulations. However, good agreement between computational and experimental data for the pressure field and transverse detonation wave structure proves adequate capabilities of ANSYS-Fluent to predict the main physical characteristics of RDC operation. Finally, various improvements for RDC modeling are postulated, particularly for better prediction of wave velocity.

Abstract:Turbulent combustion in a DLR (German Aerospace Center) Scramjet engine was simulated using the newly-proposed Partially Resolved Numerical Simulation (PRNS) procedure. The PRNS procedure uses temporal filtering to define large-scale turbulence, and the model developed to account for unresolved scales is grid independent. No problem about inner commutation error and inconsistencies will arise from the PRNS, while such issues are of concern in traditional Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methods. The mean results have good agreement with the experiment data and the flow structures with small scales are well resolved.

Abstract:Solid–gas rotating detonation engines have been widely studied, but experimental limitations have prevented the full information of the flow field from being revealed. This paper describes a numerical investigation of the effect of the equivalence ratio on the two-phase flow field of a rotating detonation engine fueled by carbon and air. The discrete phase model and multiple surface reaction model are employed to determine the flow and combustion of carbon particles. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved for the gas flow. The results show that a low-temperature air gap appears in place of deflagration in the two-phase flow field, and the gap extends into the products. Before the detonation wave, this air gap is the difference between the air and fuel layers. At higher equivalence ratios, two rotating detonation waves are formed by the contact between the high-temperature products and the fuel–air mixture.
Numerical Investigation of Flow Properties of Rotating Detonation Engines

Abstract:Based on Euler equations with one-step chemical reaction model, 3D numerical simulations of rotating detonation engine (RDE) are performed to investigate flow properties inside its combustor in detail. It is found that most of the flow field inside the combustor of RDE is under subsonic state. At the exit of the combustor, all detonation products exhaust subsonically. Thus, RDE needs a Laval tail nozzle to increase its performance. Near the areas of the detonation wave, the shock wave reflections, the interface between reactants and products, and the contact surface, the radial velocity is large; however, it’s still small and its effects on the performance of RDE can be ignored, compared with the corresponding circumferential and axial velocities. After the detonation wave, the circumferential velocity increases abruptly. While the oblique shock wave seeps, both the circumferential and axial velocities increase. At the exit of the combustor, the circumferential energy flux is about 20% of the total energy flux. This will cause energy loss and reduce RDE performance.

Abstract:A 3D numerical model of a combustion chamber with continuous rotating detonation wave was performed. The ignition, onset and stabilization of a rotating detonation wave in combustion chambers of different shapes was investigated. The effect of additional oxygen injection on the onset of rotating detonation wave was studied. Formation of a stable detonation wave was investigated against different factors: internal body diameter, injectors number and diameter, pressure at the fuel and oxidizer orifices. The calculations were performed using specialized computer code designed by the Authors at the APK-5 super-computer system.

Abstract:Rotating detonation engine has been widely studied in recent years because of its high theoretical efficiency and heat release rate. In many numerical simulations, the combustible mixture is injected and fully filled at the head of the combustor. In this paper, annular injection slits are proposed and three representative injection patterns are simulated by changing the injection directions. Stable single-wave modes are formed in all three patterns and two kinds of combustible mixture layer structures are found, namely "L-shape" and "T-shape" structures. Following the combustible mixture layer, the detonation wave is not fully filled in the radial direction, thus radial and circumferential shock waves are induced from the detonation wave, forming more complex wave structures. After the radial shock wave, velocity vortex and significant deflagration are found and propagate with the shock wave, thus maintaining a higher pressure and temperature there.

Abstract:Based on the two-dimensional numerical simulation of continuously rotating detonations in an annular chamber, the paths of flow particles burned by three different processes are tracked and analyzed in detail. The detonation wave, the deflagration wave, the oblique shock wave, and the contact surface have a small influence on the paths of flow particles. The fluctuation of paths in the azimuthal direction is less than 12% of the circumference of the combustion chamber. The path will deflect when the flow particle encounters the detonation wave or the oblique shock wave, and it will not deflect when encounters the deflagration wave or the contact surface. About 23.6% fuel is burned by deflagration, and the left is burned by rotating detonation wave. The thermodynamic performance of continuously rotating detonations is then discussed. The p–v and T–s diagrams obtained by numerical simulation are qualitatively consistent with the ideal ZND model. The average thermal efficiency of the detonation combustion in 2D RDE is 31%, and its average net mechanical work is 1.3MJ/kg. The thermal efficiency of the entire RDE is 26.4%, and its net mechanical work is 30% of the ideal ZND model. The superior performance of continuously rotating detonations is determined.

Abstract:Based on summary and analysis of existing results and conclusions on rotating detonation wave in annular combustion chambers, an alternative model of chamber for rotating detonation engines was presented. It has no inner wall. We utilized one step chemistry kinetic model together with the Eular function in three-dimensional space to testify the possibility of continuous rotation. The simulation showing that the detonation spontaneously converged to a propagation structure of two central symmetric detonation waves. Under the present condition, the mass flow could reach as large as 450 kg/m2s and the fuel-based impulse was 1900 s, which is 5 percent lower than that in the annular combustion chamber.

Abstract:The operating characteristic of two-phase rotating detonation fueled by kerosene in a hollow combustor with the isolation section is experimentally studied. When the air mass flow rate is 1.5 kg/s, the equivalence ratio is 0.98, and the total temperature of the mixture is 650 K, the stable rotating detonation wave (RDW) is obtained, which verifies the feasibility of the designed two-phase rotating detonation combustor (RDC). It is found that there is a high-frequency oblique shock induced by the upstream rotating detonation wave in the isolation section. A series of experimental tests have been carried out by changing the total temperature of incoming air , which is an important factor affecting the initiation. When the equivalent ratio of reactants is between 0.950–1.152, a stable single-wave detonation is formed. With the increase of equivalent ratio, the time of detonation wave establishment decreases, the intensity and frequency of detonation wave increases, and the temperature of engine tail flame rises. The equivalent chamber pressure Δp φ was defined, and the curve of the performance of the RDC with the equivalent ratio was obtained. The velocity of the RDW increases with the increase of equivalent ratio, and the chamber pressure has an optimal value, a higher or lower equivalent ratio will lead to the decrease of equivalent chamber pressure and the combustion chamber performance.

Abstract:Numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the flow field characteristics and performance of a carbon-hydrogen/oxygen-rich air rotating detonation engine (RDE). Three distinct flow field structures were observed in the gas-solid two-phase RDE. The results show that reducing the hydrogen equivalence ratio and particle diameter both contribute to the transition from gas-phase single-front detonation to gas-solid two-phase double-front detonation and further to gas-solid two-phase single-front detonation. The effects of solid fuel particle diameter and hydrogen equivalence ratio on the flow field characteristics and performance are revealed. The results show that reducing the particle diameter enhances the speed of the two-phase detonation wave, improves the pressure gain in the combustion chamber, and increases the specific impulse. Decreasing the hydrogen equivalence ratio reduces the detonation wave speed, enhances the stability of the detonation flow field, increases the pressure gain in the detonation wave and combustion chamber and boosts thrust. Furthermore, the selection of operational conditions to ensure stable operation and optimal performance of the RDE is discussed. In order to take into account the requirements of stability, pressure gain performance and propulsion performance, two-phase single-front detonation should be realized in gas-solid two-phase RDE, and smaller hydrogen equivalent ratio and appropriate particle diameter should be selected. According to the conclusion of this study, the particle diameter should be 0.5-1 {\mu}m. Under such conditions, the detonation flow field demonstrates good stability, allowing the RDE to achieve higher pressure gain and specific impulse while maintaining stable operation.

Abstract:Three-dimensional numerical simulations are performed on air-breathing rotating detonation combustors with detailed H2/air chemistry. Detonation-related flow structures and pressure gain performance have been investigated. Emphasis is placed on the effects of the upstream oblique shock wave that is attached with detonation. This unsteady oblique shock wave is found to rotate along the chamber in the pre-detonation region. The angle of the upstream oblique shock wave shows a negative correlation with chamber pressure. Moreover, particle trajectory analysis shows that particles cross the unsteady upstream oblique shock wave twice or three times before being consumed by detonation, with obvious deflections in the radial direction due to the curvature effect, while particles collide with the downstream oblique shock wave in the post-detonation region once. At the exit, more than 96% of kinetic energy is still concentrated in the axial direction. Furthermore, the pressure gain performance is investigated by the integral of total pressure over the averaged area in the axial direction and individual particles. The results show that detonation-related flow structures in the current chamber configuration fail to achieve positive pressure gain. −17.2%, −16.4%, and −17.8% of total pressure gain are obtained in three numerical simulations. Further analysis shows that though the total pressure of particles increases instantly when encountering the upstream oblique shock wave, 25% of total pressure is lost before detonation combustion due to the large angle of the upstream oblique shock wave and the geometry. The cumulative effect of the pre-detonation region on the total pressure is equivalent to flows with Mach 1.94 crossing a normal shock wave.

Abstract:Previous numerical simulations of the hydrogen-air rotating detonation engine have been carried out using a simple fuel-injection pattern. This pattern assumes that the fresh gas mixture is injected through every point of the head-wall. This article improves the simulation by discussing four new injection patterns. Parts of the wall are treated as a solid wall in the new patterns. The simulation results show that slits or intervals on the head-walls cause interactions between the detonation waves and combustion products, which affect the formation and stability of detonation. Unstable detonation should be a normal state of rotating detonation engines between stable detonation and failed detonation. The features of the flow fields can be used as a reference for combustion chamber design.

Abstract:A three-dimensional simulation is performed to study rotating detonation engines (RDEs) with a hollow combustor. The simulation tracks some representative flow particles and makes an analysis of their evolution process in the rotating detonation flow, including their trajectories and the variation of their physical properties. The study shows that there are mainly two types of trajectories of these tracked particles. The particles in the outer region of the chamber present smooth paths and flow downstream quickly along the outer wall. The particles in the inner region, by contrast, show relatively winding paths before passing through the chamber. Overall, most of the flow particles are ejected almost along the axial direction. The physical properties of the flow particles change rapidly and evidently when they encounter the detonation front. The oblique shock wave induced by the detonation wave has a compression effect on the flow particles. This compression effect, however, is much smaller compared with that of the detonation front. The present study helps to explore some details of the detonation flow in the hollow combustor and shows that the hollow RDE has the advantage of generating a stable thrust.

Abstract:The two-dimensional simulation of two-phase rotating detonation engines commonly adopts the nozzle–wall configuration, which is inconsistent with the real configurations in experiments. In the annular slot–nozzle structure, the oxidant is completely injected into the annular gap, whereas the fuel is partially injected into the nozzle hole, which is closer to the real operation condition. In this study, a gas–liquid two-dimensional numerical investigation was conducted to explore a more accurate operating condition with a discrete injection configuration. The effects of the kerosene/hydrogen injection area ratio and hydrogen equivalence ratio on the propagation mode and operating performance were investigated. The simulation results show that the kerosene droplet/hydrogen/air gas–liquid two-phase rotating detonation wave exhibits different propagation modes depending on the hydrogen equivalence ratio. When the hydrogen equivalence ratio (φH2) is 0, the detonation wave cannot be successfully initiated. When φH2 is increased to 0.2 and 0.5, a single-wave propagation mode is generated. When φH2 is 1, a double-wave propagation mode is produced initially in the combustion chamber and is subsequently converted into the deflagration mode. The flow field structure, velocity performance, and propulsive performance in the detonation combustion chamber are analyzed. It was found that an appropriate amount of hydrogen addition to the liquid kerosene detonation can aid in stabilizing the propagation of the detonation wave and improving the performance of the detonation engine.
