Abstract:To realize the precise modulation among the cesium lead halide perovskite-related phases is one of the most fascinating subjects and has motivated increasing research. The formation mechanisms of different phases of cesium lead halide have not been fully recognized. In this work, we reported the phase-selective synthesis of CsPbBr3 nanorods and Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals (NCs) in amine-free systems, simply by adjusting the dosage of oleic acid (OA). By utilizing UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, we probed the evolution of the NCs and some lead bromide complex species during syntheses in reaction systems with different OA dosages. An OA-limited condition facilitated the formation of [PbBr4](2-) and Cs4PbBr6 NCs. OA-rich conditions facilitated the formation of [PbBr3](-), [Pb2Br5](-), etc. at early stages and the subsequent generation of CsPbBr3 NCs. As the reaction systems equilibrated at a later stage, as-prepared CsPbBr3 or Cs4PbBr6 NCs would coexist with certain lead bromide complexes. OA dosage also greatly affected the kinetics of reactions toward CsPbBr3 NCs. A relatively large amount of OA would accelerate the formation of CsPbBr3 NCs. Our experimental results support two-step formation pathways of the cesium lead bromide NCs going through lead bromide complexes, and suggest that OA exerted all the influence by virtue of the lead bromide complexes. Our study presents a relatively clear picture of the formation of CsPbBr3 and Cs4PbBr6 NCs, which should be helpful in improving the preparation of lead halide perovskite-related NCs.

Abstract:A binary ligand system composed of aliphatic carboxylic acids and primary amines of various chain lengths is commonly employed in diverse synthesis methods for CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs). In this work, we have carried out a systematic study examining how the concentration of ligands (oleylamine and oleic acid) and the resulting acidity (or basicity) affects the hot-injection synthesis of CsPbBr3 NCs. We devise a general synthesis scheme for cesium lead bromide NCs which allows control over size, size distribution, shape, and phase (CsPbBr3 or Cs4PbBr6) by combining key insights on the acid-base interactions that rule this ligand system. Furthermore, our findings shed light upon the solubility of PbBr2 in this binary ligand system, and plausible mechanisms are suggested in order to understand the ligand-mediated phase control and structural stability of CsPbBr3 NCs.

Abstract:This study employed oleylamine (OAm) as solvent to replace traditional octadecene (ODE) in hot‐injection method, OAm and oleic acid (OA) still as ligands, which can control the Pb‐Br linkage and the interconnection of [PbBr6]4− octahedra, and resulting in the formation of different nanostructures (CsBr, Cs4PbBr6, and CsPbBr3). In addition, the evolution process and mechanism are also systematically studied. Due to the ultrafast nucleation and growth rates of perovskite nanostructures during the synthesis, the products are difficult to control, such as its derivatives (e.g., Cs4PbBr6) often appear. Here, the hot‐injection method is ameliorated by using oleylamine (OAm) instead of octadecene as solvent. The results reveal that in OAm‐rich system, the pure nanostructures with different Pb/Br ratios (CsBr, Cs4PbBr6, and CsPbBr3) can be obtained at different reaction temperatures, and thus controlling the Pb‐Br linkage and the interconnection of [PbBr6]4− octahedra, and resulting in the formation of different nanostructures. As the reaction temperature increases from 120 to 180 °C, the products change from lead‐free CsBr nanocrystals to poor‐lead Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals and finally to normal CsPbBr3 nanocubes and nanowires. Moreover, the synthesized CsPbBr3 nanowires exhibit an emission peak at 521 nm, full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 19 nm, with photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQY) of 64.9%, and high stability. Furthermore, the white light‐emitting diode (WLED) devices are successfully fabricated based on the obtained CsPbBr3 nanowires, showing high‐intensity white light and high stability without any encapsulation. Remarkably, this work provides a new approach for elucidating the synthesis mechanism of perovskite nanomaterials and their applications.

Abstract:Active control over the shape, composition and crystalline habit of nanocrystals is a long sought-after goal. Various methods have been shown to enable post-synthesis modification of nanoparticles, including the use of the Kirkendall effect, galvanic replacement and cation or anion exchange, all taking advantage of enhanced solid-state diffusion on the nanoscale. In all these processes, however, alteration of the nanoparticles requires introduction of new precursor materials. Here we show that for cesium lead halide perovskite nanoparticles, a reversible structural and compositional change can be induced at room temperature solely by modification of the ligand composition in solution. Reversible transformation of cubic CsPbX3 nanocrystals to rhombohedral Cs4PbX6 nanocrystals is achieved by controlling the ratio of oleylamine to oleic acid capping molecules. This scheme does not only enable fabrication of high purity monodisperse Cs4PbX6 nanoparticles with controlled sizes. Rather, dependent on the Cs4PbX6 nanoparticles final size afforded by reaction time, the back reaction yields CsPbX3 nanoplatelets with controlled thickness. These results shed some light on the unique properties of this family of materials, provide hints to the origin of their superb photovoltaic performance and point at possible routes for their controlled fabrication and stabilization.

Abstract:Controlled synthesis of colloidal all-inorganic lead halide perovskite semiconductor nanocrystals, such as CsPbBr3, with tunable size, shape, composition, and crystalline phase have recently attracted wide interest for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report a new strategy for using alkyl-thiols to induce the transformation of CsPbBr3 to perovskite-related cesium lead halide (CsPb2Br5) with controlled morphology and a crystalline phase at room temperature. By rational tuning the ratios of the alkyl-thiol ligands to alkyl-amines or to alkyl-acids, the as-synthesized colloidal nanocrystals can be rationally controlled from orthorhombic crystalline-phase CsPbBr3 to tetragonal-phase CsPb2Br5 nanosheets and nanowires with high yield. Significantly, the tetragonal CsPb2Br5 nanowires and nanosheets have high stability in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. These findings may open new directions for large-scale synthesis of shape- and crystalline phase-controlled perovskite nanocrystals for high-performance, low-cost optical electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Colloidal CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals have attracted much attention due to their unique physical and chemical properties. As an important factor to control the crystalline phase and morphology of perovskite, the mechanism of the action of the crystal surface ligands, however, still remains unclear. In this work, the variation of the crystalline phase and morphology with reaction time in the conventional hot injection method was studied, and the ligands on various crystals were characterized. Based on above work, a hot injection process with various ligand-rich system was proposed. Oleic acid (OA) and oleylamine (OAm) were employed to replace octadecene (ODE) as the solvent. The relationship between OA/OAm ratio and the composition and structure of the product was studied, and a variety of perovskite structures with different components, crystalline phases and morphologies were obtained. Moreover, the binding modes between ligands and surfaces of different perovskite nanocrystals were further explored by using first-principles simulation. This work helps further understand the role of OA, OAm and other ligands in perovskite nanocrystal formation and proposes an approach for the controlled synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals.

Abstract:Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals (NCs) have been recently studied as they can enhance the light emitting efficiency and stability of CsPbBr3 NCs. However, the synthesis of Cs4PbBr6 NCs is often accompanied by the generation of CsPbBr3 NCs, and less attention has been paid to how to exactly control their formation. Here, we investigated the key factors in deciding the final products in the hot-injection synthesis by a modified amine-free method. We found that the molarity ratio of Cs/Pb dominated the final products, while the amount of bromine had a relatively small effect. In addition, introducing a certain amount of oleylamine into the amine-free reaction leads to the formation of Cs4PbBr6, instead of CsPbBr3 NCs. This clearly shows that the protection ligand oleylamine also plays an important role in the formation of Cs4PbBr6 NCs. This well understood and fine control of the synthesis may inspire a new CsPbBr3@Cs4PbBr6 core-shell structure, with the same chemical elements but a different crystal phase in the core and the shell. This nanostructure would open a new avenue for enhancing the stability of perovskite nanocrystals.

Abstract:All-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites have shown great potential in optoelectronic field owing to their fascinating optical properties. Despite the huge success achieved in various fields, the applications of perovskite materials are impeded by their poor stability caused by their inherent ionic nature and highly dynamic surface nature. The preparation of CsPbBr 3 -Cs 4 PbBr 6 nanocrystals has proven to be effective strategy to enhance the photoluminescence properties and the stability. Herein, for the first time, we report a facile synthesis of CsPbBr 3 -Cs 4 PbBr 6 nanocrystals with diphase structure at room temperature using Cs-OA, Pb-OA and TOABr as precursors in toluene. It is found that the phase transformation and the relative composition between CsPbBr 3 and Cs 4 PbBr 6 is dependent of the concentration of TOABr and the ratio of Cs/Pb. In-situ PL experiments reveal that the formation of ~12 nm CsPbBr 3 nanocubes experience the fast nucleation, the focusing of size-distribution in early growth stage and Ostwald ripening growth in later stage at TOABr concentration of 0.16 mmol. With increasing the concentration of TOABr or Cs/Pb>1(Cs/Pb<1), [PbBr 4 ] 2- complex and [PbBr 3 ] - complex can exist at the same time and compete in toluene, the formation of CsPbBr 3 nucleates is dominated in the early stage, then CsPbBr 3- Cs 4 PbBr 6 nanocomposites are gradually formed on CsPbBr 3 nucleates as photoluminescence centers owing to the continuously generation of [PbBr 4 ] 2- complex between TOABr and Pb 2+ . The relative composition of Cs 4 PbBr 6 inCsPbBr 3- Cs 4 PbBr 6 nanocomposites can be improved from 4% to 85% with increasing the concentration of TOABr or Cs/Pb<1. The optimized CsPbBr 3 -Cs 4 PbBr 6 composite nanocrystals possess high PLQY and stability. Our work offers a mechanistic understanding of phase transformation in cesium lead halide perovskite materials.

Abstract:Spherical CeO2 submicron particles were synthesized by a facile PVP-assisted hydrothermal method. By the analysis of XRD, FESEM, TEM and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), we confirmed that the as-obtained spherical CeO2 particles were formed by the oriented aggregation of fluorite CeO2 nanocrystals. The formation mechanism was discussed by varying synthetic parameters such as reaction temperature, and the concentration of cerium salt. In our synthetic process, Ce(NO3)3·6H2O was first hydrolyzed to rod-like organic cerium salt by the assistance of PVP, then the organic cerium salt was decomposed into CeO2 nanocrystals. Finally, spherical CeO2 particles were formed by the oriented aggregation of these CeO2 nanocrystals through the interaction between the same crystal planes of different nanocrystals and the assistance of PVP.

Abstract:PbMoO4 nanoparticles and pagodalike microcrystals have been controllably prepared by a simple sonochemical method without any surfactants. The as-prepared powders were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the pH played a crucial role on the controllable synthesis of PbMoO4. Pagoda like microcrystals could be formed on acid condition, and nanocrystals were obtained in the case of pH 7 and pH 14. The synthesis mechanism was also discussed. Abstract:Perovskite nanocrystals have attracted much attention in the last ten years due to their different applications, especially in the photovoltaic domain and LED performance. In this large family of perovskite nanocrystals, CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals are attractive nanomaterials because they are good candidates for obtaining green emissions and exploring new synthesis routes. In this context, controlling the nanometric scale's morphology, particularly the size and monodispersity, is fundamental for exploring their photophysical properties and final applications. Currently, the nanometric size of nanocrystals is ensured by the presence of oleic acid and oleylamine molecules, in using Hot Injection (HI) or ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) methods. If oleic acid plays a fundamental role, oleylamine can be easily substituted by other amino molecules, opening the way for the functionalization of CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals and the obtention of new hybrid perovskite nanocrystal families. In this article, we describe the synthesis, by soft chemistry, of a new family of hybrid organic–inorganic CsPbBr 3 nanocrystals, functionalized by aryl-alkylamine (AAA) molecules, through the modified LARP method. We highlight the mechanism for cutting submicron crystals into nanocrystals, using aryl-alkylamine molecules like scissors. The impact of these amino molecules on the final nanocrystals leads to different nanocrystal morphologies (nanocubes, nanosheets, or nanorods) and structures (monoclinic, rhombohedral, or tetragonal). In addition, this modified LARP method highlights, under certain experimental conditions, an unexpected formation of PbO ribbons.

Abstract:Colloidal nanocrystals of fully inorganic cesium lead halide (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, I, or combinations thereof) perovskites have attracted much attention for photonic and optoelectronic applications. Herein, we demonstrate a facile room-temperature (e.g., 25 °C), ligand-mediated reprecipitation strategy for systematically manipulating the shape of CsPbX3 colloidal nanocrystals, such as spherical quantum dots, nanocubes, nanorods, and nanoplatelets. The colloidal spherical quantum dots of CsPbX3 were synthesized with photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield values up to >80%, and the corresponding PL emission peaks covering the visible range from 380 to 693 nm. Besides spherical quantum dots, the shape of CsPbX3 nanocrystals could be engineered into nanocubes, one-dimensional nanorods, and two-dimensional few-unit-cell-thick nanoplatelets with well-defined morphology by choosing different organic acid and amine ligands via the reprecipitation process. The shape-dependent PL decay lifetimes have been determined to be several to tens to hundreds of nanoseconds. Our method provides a facile and versatile route to rationally control the shape of the CsPbX3 perovskites nanocrystals, which will create opportunities for applications such as displays, lasing, light-emitting diodes, solar concentrators, and photon detection.
Effect of Oleamine on Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of Cesium Lead Bromide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Abstract:Herein, we reported a simple microwave-assisted method for synthesizing uniform CsPbBr3 and Cs4PbBr6 perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs). The phase structure, photoluminescence (PL) emission, and quantum yield (QY) of CsPbBr3 PeNCs can be tuned by changing the radiation time and power of the microwave. The optimized CsPbBr3 PeNCs showed a high PLQY of up to 87%. The transformation from green-luminescent three-dimensional (3D) CsPbBr3 PeNCs to nonluminescent zero-dimensional (0D) Cs4PbBr6 PeNCs was easily realized by adjusting the amount of oleamine (OAm) and oleic acid (OA), and the changes in morphology and phase structure during the transformation process were studied by a microwave-assisted technique. Meanwhile, the optical properties of Cs4PbBr6 PeNCs were revealed by monitoring the changes in absorption and emission spectra. Furthermore, through first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT), the luminescene origination of as-prepared PeNCs was further explained. Abstract:Compositionally related cesium lead halide materials, such as CsPb2X5, have attracted great interest due to their considerable optoelectronic/optical properties as well as improved stability. Currently, CsPb2Br5 nanocrystals can be well-designed by tuning the ligands or precursor ratio, whereas, CsPb2X5 (with Cl- or I-) nanocrystals can only be obtained by the anion exchange method. Herein, we report a method to directly synthesize CsPb2X5 facilitated by thiol ligands. The morphology of CsPb2X5 can be designed as a nanowire. Importantly, the stability of directly synthesized CsPb2X5 nanowires is much improved when compared with the stabilities of the materials obtained by the anion-exchange method. We believe that this method will promote the application of 1D tetragonal CsPb2X5 in optoelectronics, optics and other fields.
Reaction-controlled shape evolution and insights into the growth mechanism of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals

Abstract:The correlation between structural transformation and optical characteristics of cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) nanocrystals (NCs) suggests insights into their growth mechanism and optical performance. Systematic control of reaction parameters led to the successful fabrication of on-demand shape-morphing CsPbBr3 NCs. Transmission electron microscopy observations showed that the shape transformation from nanocubes to microcrystals could be accelerated by increasing the precursor:ligand molar ratio and reaction time. Further evidence for orthorhombic CsPbBr3 NCs was obtained from their selected-area electron diffraction pattern, which exhibits a twin domain induced by the presence of large NCs. Likewise, we observed a substantial decrease in photoluminescence (PL) intensity of CsPbBr3 due to surface decomposition or surface ligand loss resulting from increased size. In addition, fusion of smaller particles having other dimensionality induced the increase in the PL full-width at half maximum. In particular, existence of larger bulk material caused a reduction in the peak intensity in the absorption spectra and a trend of decreasing tendency in intensity of the absorption bands related to bromoplumbate species provided direct evidence of fully converted Cs-oleate.

Abstract:In recent years, all-inorganic perovskite semiconductor CsPbCl3 is widely studied because of its excellent optical and electronic properties, but its derivative Cs4PbCl6, which possesses a wider band gap, is seldom studied due to the challenging synthesis. In this work, we demonstrate a selective synthesis method for Cs4PbCl6 and CsPbCl3 in microemulsion regulated by the ligand concentration of n-octylamine. When the concentration is sufficiently high, the products are regular hexagonal Cs4PbCl6 microcrystal in sizes of 1-2 mu m; when the concentration is sufficiently low, the products are rectangular plate-shaped CsPbCl3 nanocrystals in sizes of 200-800 nm; and when the concentration is moderate, the products are their mixtures. Cathodoluminescence spectrum of a single particle of Cs4PbCl6 is measured. The change of Pb2+ solubility regulated by the ligand concentration is mainly responsible for the selective synthesis. This method applies for the synthesis of Cs4PbBr6.

Abstract:The size-controllable and highly monodispersed cuboidal barium strontium titanate (BST) nanocrystals have been successfully synthesized through a glycothermal process with no mineralizers but oleic acid as growth-directing agent. The synthesized BST nanocrystals under different glycothermal conditions were structurally characterized by XRD, IR, FESEM, TEM and HRTEM and investigated with respect to the effects of key influencing factors including the amount of oleic acid, duration of glycothermal process and 1,4-butanediol/water volume ratio in the reaction media on the formation of BST nanocrystals and their size and morphological evolution. It has been found that the oleic acid incorporated into the glycothermal system plays a decisive role in promoting the formation of cuboidal nanocrystals. It allows the BST nanocrystals to form via a nucleation-growth mechanism instead of in situ reactions and the selective chemical adsorption of oleic acid molecules on the facets with lower plane indices of newly-built BST nuclei directs them to grow into uniform cuboidal BST nanocrystals. The duration of glycothermal reactions and the polarity of reaction media can remarkably affect the dynamic process of the formation of BST nanocrystals. These regularly-shaped and highly monodispersed nanocrystals show a spontaneity of self-assembling into 2D ordered architectures when they were dispersed in organic solvents like cyclohexane and droped onto a hydrophobic surface of substrates, which creates a chance for the ferroelectric oxide nanocrystals to self-assemble into nanoscale electronic devices.

Abstract:Cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite nanocrystals are becoming a popular alternative to chalcogenide quantum dots because of their bright green fluorescence and high color purity. However, owing to the poor stability caused by their highly ionic nature and the dynamic binding of long-chain capping ligands, their practical applications are limited. Although (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) is a frequently used insulating material for wrapping CsPbBr3nanocrystals, it often causes surface etching. To address this issue, we introduced oleic acid into the anti-solvent toluene to inhibit the etching effect of APTES using a modified room-temperature ligand-assisted reprecipitation process. We utilized in situ time-dependent photoluminescence measurements to study the formation kinetics of CsPbBr3nanocrystals and determine the optimal ligands ratio. This innovative approach enables precise control over CsPbBr3@SiO2nanoparticles synthesis, yielding uniformly shaped nanocrystals with a silica shell, a consistent size around 10.17 ± 1.6 nm, and enhanced photoluminescence quantum yields ranging from 90% and 100%. The photoluminescence lifetimes of our CsPbBr3@SiO2nanoparticles were significantly prolonged owing to a reduction in non-radiative recombination. This boosts their stability in thermal and polar solvent environments, making them superior candidates for use in photonic devices.
