Abstract:This article consists of an overview of some of the most recent and influential academic work on the history and esthetics of Brazilian cinema, followed by some speculative notes on the future of Brazilian film scholarship. Based on recent trends and topics in the field of Film Studies in Brazil, I intend to demonstrate how the latest transformations in the Brazilian mediascapes and film market have stirred and molded new approaches to Brazilian cinema, notably amidst a new generation of film scholars. This overview covers Brazilian cinema and its related film scholarship from the "Retomada" years (1993–1994) up until some of the latest film releases (2019), or "Newest Brazilian Cinema." Without the presumption of being an exhaustive account, this article aims to provide a panoramic and introductory annotated bibliography that will be useful for further studies and an inventory of current state-of-the-art film scholarship in Brazil.

Abstract:This chapter presents an overview and critique of theories of Brazil’s cinematic belle epoque, which have depicted the early film period as a golden age of Brazilian filmmaking in contrast to later decades that were dominated by Hollywood’s hegemony. The chapter shows how these utopian discourses regarding the belle epoque have obscured the cinematic period’s intrinsic link to Rio de Janeiro and its modernizing reforms, reforms that were inextricably linked to the development and expansion of global capitalism.

Abstract:The adoption by local governments of neoliberal theories and strategic planning, which promotes the use of competitiveness scales and business marketing criteria in urban management, generated a series of changes in cities with the aim of reversing the closure of factories and shops and attracting new businesses, residents and tourists. In this context, the cinema became a media platform to project the image that wanted to promote of the city as a tourist destination and an innovative and creative scene, mainly through the action of the Film Commissions. This article analyses the relationship between cinema and the city of Porto, from the first film episodes to the co-financing by the local Film Commission of the film Porto, by Brazilian-born filmmaker Gabe Klinger. The study contrasts the way in which local director Manoel de Oliveira projected the city of Porto in his works, with the objective and qualitative analysis of Gabe Klinger’s film. Among the conclusions, we can mention how the cinema shows over time the functional changes of the modern city and that the projected image must have a clear relationship with the sense of place of the filmed city.

Abstract:Originating in metropoles in the Global North, the creative cities model has increasingly been replicated in locations around the globe. However, betting on the creative industries to reinvigorate stagnant economies might not be a solution compatible with every context. To analyse this issue, this article presents the case of the small Brazilian city of Cabaceiras, which was the target of a project aimed at revitalizing its economy through film and tourism in 2007. Based on 25 interviews with residents and policy makers, we examine whether the initiative was, in their view, successful in stimulating a creative hub. We argue that the creative cities model has not yet proven feasible in Cabaceiras due to financial and infrastructural challenges that the city experiences, its positioning outside of Brazil’s cultural and creative centres and the uncertainties of investing in the audiovisual sector in the country.

Abstract:This article explores the role of marketing and, in particular, media reviewing, in the creation of literary value and the circulation of literature by examining how the Brazilian literary landscape is framed through the lens of the anglophone press. A distinction is made between homogenizing, heterogenizing and exoticizing tendencies in the marketing of translated fiction. Brazilian literature is found to be sometimes exoticized, presented as a way of vicariously experiencing a remote culture; as a form, in other words, of literary tourism. Comparing the cases where the literature is exoticized to those where it is homogenized as part of the international literary canon helps us understand how cultural differences are mobilized in order to create an image of a “national” literature that appeals to the tourist gaze. Thus, this article reveals the precise mechanisms through which media reviewing can contribute to both the consecration but also the devaluation of national(ized) literatures.

Abstract:This issue of Art in Translation demonstrates the journal's continued commitment to bringing Afro-Brazilian art and its historiography to wider attention. Complementing the previously published texts by Raimundo Nina Rodrigues (Vargem Grande, 1862–Paris, 1906) 1 and by Arthur Ramos (Pilar, 1903–Paris, 1949) 2 in Art in Translation in 2017 (issue 9.3), this issue offers four key texts by three Brazilian authors: Manuel Querino (Santo Amaro, 1851–Salvador, 1923), 3 Odorico Tavares (Timbaúba, 1912–Salvador, 1980), 4 and Mário Barata (Rio de Janeiro, 1921–2007). 5 Four further texts on Afro-Brazilian art by Abdias do Nascimento (Franca, 1914–Rio de Janeiro, 2011), 6 Clarival do Prado Valladares (Salvador, 1918–Rio de Janeiro, 1983), 7 and Marianno Carneiro da Cunha (Recife, 1926–Monte Verde, 1980) 8 are planned for publication in a future issue of Art in Translation . Together these ten texts by eight authors will provide a pioneering overview of eighty years of Brazilian writing on the arts produced by or related to Africans and people of African descent in Brazil. There is currently no such a collection of texts, not even in the original Portuguese language in Brazil. As the bibliography below suggests, these little-known texts have only recently come to scholarly attention.

Abstract:This article intends to analyze the 183rd edition - of September 2013 - of the cultural magazine of national circulation called Cult. Passing through discussions about precepts exposed by the cultural industry and forms of coverage carried out by cultural journalism, the objective is to analyze how manifestations considered peripheral are represented in Brazilian journalism, especially in Cult magazine. Although the journal alludes to rap, carioca funk and tecnobrega, the study will bring a historical, political and social detail only on the first one because it is the style with the greatest representation on the magazine’s cover and also to centralize the analysis in search of better results.

Abstract:Brazilian Railway Culture examines the cultural relationship Brazil has had with its railways since tracks were first laid by British, American and French engineers in the nineteenth century. 'Railway' and 'Brazil' are words not often found in the same sentence. Yet each year over seven hundred million passengers are carried by train in the major urban centres, and tens of thousands of visitors enjoy heritage steam rides at over a dozen restored lines and museums. Brazilian Railway Culture starts from the premise that Brazilian society and culture is not just samba, football and sex. The book takes a journey through Brazilian cultural output from 1865 to the present day, examining novels, poetry, music, art, film and television, as well as autobiographies, written histories, and museums to uncover ways in which the railway has been represented. This interdisciplinary study engages with theories of informal empire and postcolonialism, Latin American studies, cultural studies, film and television studies, literary criticism, art history and criticism, museum and heritage studies, as well as railway studies. This is a supplementary text for use by students on both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. It will also be of interest to academics, researchers, and railway historians across a range of disciplines.

Abstract:The relationship between cinema and literature is permanent from film’s beginnings, with film adaptations stealing fire from great works. This paper analyses the relationship between film and tourism, focusing on the role of Brazilian literature’s influences in this context. Storytelling as a tool and the relevance of “travel with a purpose” are additional subjects discussed in relation to this type of tourism. This is an exploratory study that uses textual analysis (word clouds and similarity analysis). The textual corpus is formed by the synopsis of films based on Brazilian literature (n=25). The results show new clues for the understanding of a promising market niche in audiovisual tourism in Brazil: Literary Film Tourism (LCT in Brazilian).

Abstract:The article both presents how, from the end of the 1980s onwards, native peoples have begun to occupy certain spaces of textual production and circulation that they had not previously occupied in the Brazilian cultural scene (for social, linguistic, and cultural reasons, but also political and juridical) and discusses how this process has provoked a vigorous movement of dilation of traditional textual and discursive borders in Western culture. Texts deriving from indigenous peoples in the sphere of academic discourse are, in general, bilingual, and are structured in ways that combine aspects of intellectual production with those of artistic creation. Moreover, they are also structured around a rather complex conception of the notion of authorship (considering that they are written by an author but represent the voice of their people). As examples, the article analyzes the case of Os cantos tradicionais Ye’kwana [Traditional Ye’kwana Chants], by the indigenous teacher and researcher Fernando Ye’kwana Gimenes, winner of the 2020/2021 edition of the Dirce Cortes Riedel Masters Dissertation Award by the Brazilian Association of Comparative Literature, as a typical example of the cultural phenomenon discussed. The traditional Ye’kwana chants present significant transgressions in relation to the traditional notions of narrative logic and the dominant forms of narration in the fields of literature and history. The awarding of this academic prize to an indigenous inhabitant of the forest, on the border between Brazil and Venezuela, by the largest association of comparative literature in Latin America, in addition to being an important act in political terms, demonstrates how urgent it is to rethink processes of global literary dissemination beyond the restricted frameworks configured by the logic of hegemonic cultures, which are based on closed divisions and hierarchies. With this, we intend to contribute to the process of including Amerindian texts in the repertoire of Comparative Literature and World Literature.

Abstract:Resumo: Este artigo, por meio da metodologia da análise comparativa, objetiva fazer uma leitura do romance Iracema (1865), de José de Alencar, para relacioná-lo ao filme Iracema: uma transa amazônica (1981), dirigido por Jorge Bodanzky e Orlando Senna. O referencial teórico abrange os postulados de Antonio Candido, Zilá Bernd, Wayne Booth, Marcel Martin, entre outros. Pelo fato de as obras analisadas corresponderem a mídias e épocas distintas, este estudo estabelece comparações concernentes à intermidialidade e aos contextos socio-históricos dos séculos XIX e XX. Com base nessa associação, é possível constatar que, apesar das diferenças midiáticas, o enredo do filme reflete questões políticas relativas à década de 1970, dando ênfase ao imperialismo, de modo a aprofundar alguns temas que a prosa romântica já utilizava, como, por exemplo, o antagonismo entre próprio e estrangeiro. Diante desses resultados, conclui-se que, no que se refere ao processo de colonização, o filme propõe nova abordagem interpretativa, por privilegiar os ideais modernistas. Dessa forma, este trabalho contempla dois momentos da história e da literatura brasileiras, focalizando nuances fundamentais na formação da identidade nacional. Abstract: This article, using comparative methodology, aims to review the novel Iracema (1865), by José de Alencar, in order to relate it to the film Iracema: uma transa amazônica (1981), directed by Jorge Bodanzky and Orlando Senna. The theoretical framework includes the postulates by Antonio Candido, Zilá Bernd, Wayne Booth, Marcel Martin, among others. Due to the fact that the analyzed works correspond to different media and historical contexts, this study proposes comparisons about intermediality and 19th and 20th centuries’ socio-historical aspects. Based on these oppositions, it is possible to observe that, despite the media differences, the film’s plot reflects 1970s political issues, mainly the Imperialism, in order to deepen some themes that romanticism prose already used, such as, for example, the antagonism between self and foreigner. With these results, the conclusion is that, with regard to the colonization process, the film offers a new interpretive approach, because it obeys modernist ideals. Thus, this paper covers two moments in Brazilian History and Literature, focusing on essential idiosyncrasies in the formation of national identity. Multicultural Brazil in the BRICS Countries: Potentials for the Social Sciences and Humanities

Abstract:This study argues a case for multiculturalism as a possible approach for addressing the complexities of societies such as the BRICS, taking Brazil as a case study. It contends that knowledge derived from such a study can benefit Social Studies and Humanities worldwide, particularly considering that cultural diversity has been increasingly present due to globalisation, internationalisation and growing mobility of groups of people, including refugees all over the world, requiring new epistemologies and narratives in research. The paper firstly analyses the concept of multiculturalism, discussing its perspectives from more liberal approaches up to more critical, postcolonial and decolonial perspectives that focus on the challenge of prejudices that operate in terms of control and denial of pluralism. It discusses the multicultural composition of the population of Brazil as a BRICS country, analysing its main geographical and population characteristics. The main focus of the paper is to delve in the ways that Brazilian educational policies have been trying to address both international standards and the valuing of cultural identities and equity-oriented approaches that are inclusive and multicultural. It particularly focuses on the National Plan for Education and of the recent project for higher education institutions (called “Future-se”). Finally, it concludes by pointing out tensions and possibilities of such Brazilian endeavours in the context of the BRICS countries. Such a study may be relevant comparatively, hopefully providing reflections for new epistemologies and the potential value of these for the Social Sciences and Humanities.

Abstract:This article provides an overview of the recent flourishing of research and pedagogy in higher education that seeks a greater rapprochement between criticism and creativity, bringing together diverse media, disciplines, and modes of knowledge production and expression. It focuses on transformations in film and screen studies and on the ethical and aesthetic possibilities of conducting creative, intermedial research through filmmaking, drawing on the author's recent, first-hand experiences of conducting such research through her making of two films about the African women filmmakers Judy Kibinge (from Kenya) and Bongiwe Selane (from South Africa). The author gives specific examples from her filmmaking process to show how she has attempted to unsettle the generic space between documentary filmmaking, curatorial practice, and video-essay making to engage in a collaborative research practice with Kibinge, Selane, and their communities, as well as her research teams. Grounding itself in a decolonial feminist framework, this article draws on the perspectives of a wide range of thinkers and filmmaker scholars to explore ways in which the colonial, patriarchal values that have haunted many academic institutions can be reformed to allow for the envisioning of new futures that will lead to a more self-reflexive, socially just higher education environment.

Abstract:The past two decades have seen a rise to greater prominence of Spanish film studies as part of a wider upsurge of interest in foreign-language film that goes beyond the canonical cinematic movements such as Italian neo-realism and the French New Wave, and more recently has begun to look beyond canonical and arthouse films to study popular cinema, genre and commercial cinema and the industry that goes with these, and in addition how the general public — as opposed to the film scholar — experiences Spanish film. This chapter traces the developments in the field and highlights the implications for Spanish film study, before presenting the papers that are to follow, suggesting how they exemplify some of the current trends in the cinema, and how they also draw attention to the aspects of Spanish cinema that today’s students and scholars need to be aware of, opening up these specificities to the student and scholar for further interrogation.

Abstract:The article reviews the main concepts and dilemmas illustrating the debate on the connections between media and politics. Considering that experiences in Political Communication are manifested in unique ways in different democracies and scientific cultures, we also examine how historical, social, and political aspects are intertwined with the development of the field in Brazil – reinforcing the need for de-westernizing media studies. Although we do not expect to exhaust state of the art, we hold that this is a helpful discussion since it outlines the agendas and trends of a specialty that has become more complex, tackling the question of to what extent widely accepted concepts are able to explain the roles of the media in Global South societies.

Abstract:Rita Azevedo Gomes' Correspondências (2016) draws on the epistolary correspondence between Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Jorge de Sena, as well as their respective poetic works, to build an epistolary-poetic, audio-visual and sensory-emotional kaleidoscope based on their reading, reciting and representation in different languages. In this way, the filmmaker generates a kind of phenomenology of reception that uses all the audiovisual possibilities: the different formats, digital and analogue; their multiple textures; and the diverse options of the texts enunciation. The experimentation with their different combinations, also using various image and sound effects, materialises in an epistolary-poetic essay film which reflects on the aesthetic experience and attains a hybrid, complex image defining contemporary cinema: between person and character, diegesis and extradiegesis, digital and analogue images, voice-in and voiceover, private and public, life and work, present and past, absence and presence, that is, between reproduction and representation. Azevedo's essayistic reflection on creation, exile and absence is generated through parataxic thinking and interstitial thinking that create dialectical and symbolic sentence-images. Thus, Correspondências becomes an avant-garde expression of both contemporary epistolary cinema and contemporary essay film.

Abstract:A wealth of scholarship exists around looking relations in cinema, but there is a paucity of research into looking relations in South African cinema. With this article we show that the examination of looking relations in South African cinema offers valuable insights and suggest that similar analyses of other South African films can only be fruitful. Through a close textual analysis of Nosipho Dumisa’s Nommer 37 (2018), we interrogate the nature of the gaze directed at Pam, the woman protagonist. The works of María Lugones, Elaine Salo, Azille Coetzee and Louise Du Toit, and Pumla Dineo Gqola allow us to interpret and apply Laura Mulvey’s male gaze within the raced and gendered South African context shaped by colonialism. We show that even though Dumisa displays an awareness of the power relations in looking, and even though she problematizes male looking, the way she uses the camera to frame the look continues to centre the gaze of the men in the film.

Abstract:The sub‐discipline of historical geography in Brazil, in contrast to the Anglophone and Francophone scholarship, often tends to be overlooked by the northern disciplinary history of this sub‐discipline. In Brazil, historical geography studies emerged in the 1980s as a result of personal initiatives. Nonetheless, in the last few years, distinct generations of Brazilian historical geographers have contributed to this sub‐discipline's promotion and recognition, mainly by diversifying their methodological approaches and research interests. Undoubtedly, developing transnational academic networks and collaborations represents a crucial contribution. This review provides an overview of the main Brazilian historical geographers engaged in studying past geographies. It delves into the central themes they address and also examines the academic conferences and research groups responsible for establishing institutional spaces to foster the practice of historical geography in Brazil in recent years. In doing so, the review calls for a 'polyphonic' approach to historical geography, urging the inclusion of southern sites of knowledge production and embracing a diverse scholarship beyond the English‐speaking community.
