Abstract:Latin American fiction has historically been characterized by its testimony on sociopolitical issues, and the contemporary novel offers important examples of the documentary narrative. Indeed, Latin American authors appear to have made richer—and earlier—use of documentary narrative than have more commonly cited American writers. Through an examination of five representative narratives, by Rodolfo Walsh (Argentina), Elena Poniatowska (Mexico), Gabriel García Márquez (Colombia), Hernán Valdés (Chile), and Miguel Barnet (Cuba), this study examines such major features of Latin American documentary narrative as complementary and contrapuntal juxtaposition, irony, authorial editing and commentary, foreshadowing and echoing of events, and disjunctive interplay between various levels of the text.

Abstract:El cortometraje, de acuerdo a sus potencialidades económicas y estructurales, tuvo un rol destacado en la transformación del campo cinematográfico latinoamericano durante las décadas del cincuenta y sesenta, tanto en la renovación estética como en el compromiso social. El objetivo de este trabajo consiste en analizar un corpus de cortos documentales argentinos, brasileños y mexicanos junto a sus condiciones de producción con el interés de efectuar una doble reflexión en torno a la dimensión política y patrimonial de este cine. En primer lugar, se focalizará en el perfil observacional de la cámara, el montaje, el testimonio y las voces como elementos expresivos tendientes a registrar una problemática social en el presente de gestación del film e intervenir en dicha realidad. En segundo lugar, y de forma complementaria, se colocará la atención en el carácter mnemónico del corpus y la construcción de un documento cultural para la posteridad, teniendo en cuenta no sólo la propia textualidad de los films sino también la conciencia patrimonial de las entidades de producción y difusión en cada país.

Abstract:This paper deals with the relationship between sound and image as expressed in the cinematic genre of music documentary. In particular, it tries to explore the way in which musical cultures are audiovisually expressed through filmic representation of music performances and artists/groups portraits. By applying a critical and comparative approach, the films Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and Café de los Maestros (2008) become vehicles to investigate images and sounds of music in everyday life, with an emphasis on the impact of globalization and commercialization during their creation and interpretation procedures. The focus is on the commercial exploitation of these films in the context of world capitalism and the way in which it influences the construction of visual representations of non-European musical cultures and identities, as cultural industry shares today a comparable postmodern situation through the concepts of “world music” and “world cinema”. In this light, the paper discusses Latin American (Cuban and Argentine) identities and local music cultures which spread internationally via films and gain a place in the global music scene. Consequently, it points towards issues of authenticity, nostalgia, exoticism, hybridity, folklorization, and the Western domination upon musics as well as films.

Abstract:Film festivals are places of encounter where different social actors come together, including professionals from the audio-visual industry, students, film buffs, and journalists, as well as the figures who organise these events. The aim of this research is to describe the journalistic coverage of film festivals carried out by the Ibero-American media, which is composed of generalist, traditional, specialised, and digital native outlets. The authors have used a qualitative methodology based on semi-structured interviews with film journalists and festival managers. The most significant findings reveal that each journalist develops their own particular type of frame building to cover an event, which is subject to the informative agenda of the media through which they are commissioned. At the same time, new actors such as influencers have also appeared, who report on the festivals as well. In addition, the festivals themselves have created their own platforms in order to fill the information gap resulting from the failure of the specialised press to report on certain aspects of these events. As a result, the authors conclude that festivals have become media hubs where different types of content generators converge, and in which they offer a diversity of information thanks to the technological facilities offered by digitisation, the Internet, and social media.

Abstract:The need for political participation felt in the aftermath of the Cuban revolution, and the widespread mobilization of photography to political ends during this period intersected with postmodern theory in a global arena. While US-based critiques of the documentary genre have been duly analyzed in the relevant literature, related conversations taking place in Latin America have only been marginally explored. This article posits that so-called postmodern discourses in fact created the basis for a horizontal, transnational and multi-centered, rather than vertical (North‒South) dynamic between these photographic communities. Through their commitment to politics, and to avant-garde aesthetics, documentary photographers performed gestures of cultural and visual appropriation, fitting their itinerant context. This article analyzes the work of Claudia Gordillo, taking as a case study Nicaragua during the 1980s.

Abstract:The past two decades have seen a rise to greater prominence of Spanish film studies as part of a wider upsurge of interest in foreign-language film that goes beyond the canonical cinematic movements such as Italian neo-realism and the French New Wave, and more recently has begun to look beyond canonical and arthouse films to study popular cinema, genre and commercial cinema and the industry that goes with these, and in addition how the general public — as opposed to the film scholar — experiences Spanish film. This chapter traces the developments in the field and highlights the implications for Spanish film study, before presenting the papers that are to follow, suggesting how they exemplify some of the current trends in the cinema, and how they also draw attention to the aspects of Spanish cinema that today’s students and scholars need to be aware of, opening up these specificities to the student and scholar for further interrogation.

Abstract:This essay focuses on the way streaming services participate in the production and distribution of films and series in Argentina. It is part of a more general attempt to comprehend ways in which multinational media corporations are altering the Latin American audiovisual space, given that global/local interactions have become ever more integrated. Thus, the series El marginal and El reino offer evidence to analyse the interfaces between public and private, foreign and domestic organizations that negotiated the creation and distribution of both series. They also illuminate certain aspects of the narratives (genre tropes, universalized content) that may have contributed to their international success. Substantial foreign funding and ease of availability through streaming platforms have placed otherwise obscure series at the centre of global attention. But there are foreign corporations that come to Latin America just to take advantage of inexpensive production opportunities. While they create job alternatives for local audiovisual workers, some critics are asking whether there is an audiovisual sovereignty that needs to be reclaimed, in view of the foreign intervention. Reframing such question, this work proposes that constructing a national culture through the audiovisual industry does not entail being alienated from global currents – development may depend on negotiation and integration.

Abstract:This article provides an overview of the recent flourishing of research and pedagogy in higher education that seeks a greater rapprochement between criticism and creativity, bringing together diverse media, disciplines, and modes of knowledge production and expression. It focuses on transformations in film and screen studies and on the ethical and aesthetic possibilities of conducting creative, intermedial research through filmmaking, drawing on the author's recent, first-hand experiences of conducting such research through her making of two films about the African women filmmakers Judy Kibinge (from Kenya) and Bongiwe Selane (from South Africa). The author gives specific examples from her filmmaking process to show how she has attempted to unsettle the generic space between documentary filmmaking, curatorial practice, and video-essay making to engage in a collaborative research practice with Kibinge, Selane, and their communities, as well as her research teams. Grounding itself in a decolonial feminist framework, this article draws on the perspectives of a wide range of thinkers and filmmaker scholars to explore ways in which the colonial, patriarchal values that have haunted many academic institutions can be reformed to allow for the envisioning of new futures that will lead to a more self-reflexive, socially just higher education environment.

Abstract:This book studies the documentary impulse that plays a central role in twentieth-century French literature. Focusing on nonfiction narratives, it analyzes the use of documents—pieces of textual or visual evidence incorporated into the literary work to relay and interrogate reality. It traces the emergence of an enduring concern with factual reference in texts that engage with current events or the historical archive. Writers idealize the document as a fragment of raw reality, but also reveal its constructed and mediated nature and integrate it as a voice within a larger composition. This ambivalent documentary imagination, present in works by Gide, Breton, Aragon, Yourcenar, Duras, and Modiano (among others), shapes the relationship of literature to visual media, testimonial discourses, and self-representation. Far from turning away from realism in the twentieth century, French literature often turns to the document as a site of both modernist experiment and engagement with the world.

Abstract:Sense of place has become relevant in Latin America in recent decades. Although many scholars have looked at people‐place relationships there, language barriers have limited the international exposure of these studies. By assembling a collection of works mainly published in Spanish and Portuguese, we trace the fields of research where the concept has taken root and reflect upon the regional characteristics of sense of place. Overall, this review provides empirical insights into the human experience of place in a culturally diverse region marked by historical injustices, inequalities, and instability. These structures have created specific, often ambivalent senses of place, organized around resistance and adaptation. A more nuanced understanding of sense of place, which emphasizes the richness and complexities of people‐place connections, will help avoid oversimplification and idealization in future theories. To frame our analysis, we investigate sense of place from the perspective of humanistic geography. Overlapping with other non‐representational inquiries, the humanistic lens focuses on human‐environment relationships—encompassing experiences, behaviors, ideas, and feelings—to deepen our understanding of the intricate and multifaceted human condition and the essential role of place in human life. Our review shows that sense of place has proven helpful in shedding light on critical Latin American socio‐spatial phenomena such as mobilities, territorialities, and fear. Regionally, researchers center on marginalized and oppressed senses of place framed by longstanding structural inequalities stemming from a colonial legacy, capitalism, and neoliberalism. We highlight "geographies of terror," "diabolic places," and "necroplaces" as powerful categories that address the grim reality in the region.

Abstract:This chapter argues that cinema has been the primary creative vehicle to reflect on national – tico – identity in Costa Rica in the twenty-first century, and it begins with an overview of the industry. Considering the ways in which film is uniquely positioned to challenge social norms through the creation of affective narratives and through the visibility it can offer to otherwise marginalised groups, this chapter analyses four films by key directors. Beginning with an exploration of Esteban Ramírez’s Gestación , it considers youth culture, gender, and class as non-normative spaces in the city of San José. Similarly, Jurgen Ureña’s Abrázame como antes is then discussed from the point of view of its ground-breaking portrayal of trans women in the capital. Two films shot at the geographic margins of the nation are then discussed, with the uncanny coastline the focus of Paz Fábrega’s Agua fría de mar and the marginalized Afro-Costa Rican province of Limón the focus of Patricia Velásquez’s Dos aguas .

Abstract:This article consists of an overview of some of the most recent and influential academic work on the history and esthetics of Brazilian cinema, followed by some speculative notes on the future of Brazilian film scholarship. Based on recent trends and topics in the field of Film Studies in Brazil, I intend to demonstrate how the latest transformations in the Brazilian mediascapes and film market have stirred and molded new approaches to Brazilian cinema, notably amidst a new generation of film scholars. This overview covers Brazilian cinema and its related film scholarship from the "Retomada" years (1993–1994) up until some of the latest film releases (2019), or "Newest Brazilian Cinema." Without the presumption of being an exhaustive account, this article aims to provide a panoramic and introductory annotated bibliography that will be useful for further studies and an inventory of current state-of-the-art film scholarship in Brazil.

Abstract:Despite Latinxs being the largest growing demographic in the United States, their experiences and identities continue to be underrepresented and misrepresented in the mainstream pop cultural imaginary. However, for all the negative stereotypes and restrictive ways that the mainstream boxes in Latinxs, Latinx musicians, writers, artists, comic book creators, and performers actively metabolize all cultural phenomena to clear positive spaces of empowerment and to make new perception, thought, and feeling about Latinx identities and experiences. In film, one sees Latinx actors in mainstream and Latinx films, playing Latinx-identified characters. It’s important to understand, though, that Latinxs today consume all variety of cultural phenomena. For corporate America, therefore, the Latinx demographic represents a huge buying demographic. Viewed with cynical and skeptical eyes, the increased representation of Latinxs in the entertainment industry is a result of this push to capture the Latinx consumer market. Within this schema, Latinx actors are rarely cast as the protagonists. As such, there is an active metabolizing and critical redeployment of these narratives as well as the fashioning of entirely new cultural phenomena. Latinx filmmakers are working in the realist, motion-photographic mode to push back and clear new spaces for Latinx subjectivities and experiences; they are also innovating in the pop cultural space of music videos. Some Latinx creators use the Internet to convey the richly layered aspects of being Latinx. Meanwhile, relative low production costs in areas such as music and comic books have led to a tremendous outpouring of Latinx pop cultural creation in these areas.

Abstract:Abstract Based upon Foucauldian and Derridean post-structuralist philosophy of language, Sousa Santos and Menezes de Souza’s sociological approaches to language, Hall’s productive conceptualization of culture and on Mirzoeff, Stam and Shohat’s visual studies, this paper seeks to engage with discussions on visual culture, cultural translation and language education. Of qualitative/interpretative nature, this reflection is divided into five main sections: in the introduction, it presents philosophical and sociological approaches to (visual) language and culture. Section one problematizes visual culture by means of the genealogy of invisible bodies. Next section evolves from the grammar-translation model to cultural translation in visual culture. Then, it revisits and deconstructs dominant literacy models through cultural translation. Finally, this genealogical perspective towards the visual shows how the traditional historical formations have taken over back again the political and educational scenarios in our country, and thus sadly promoted a politics of manipulation and alienation.

Abstract:This study offers a discussion of the role of the visual in the professional training of geographers arguing that visual literacy is not necessarily promoted during geography undergraduate studies. It then analyzes an experience of teaching a visualized Latin America developed in Argentina, as an illustrative example: on the one hand, it reveals the general lack of visual literacy among geography students; on the other hand, it suggests strategies that call for a shift in what is classically understood as a technical skill. It concludes addressing the need to redefine visual literacy in broader terms within the discipline and its training.

Abstract:We propose thinking of Angela Davis's intellectual legacy from a decolonial perspective. We point out that just as the fight for civil rights and the end of racial segregation in the United States helped to consolidate the Black movement in Brazil, the circulation of anti-colonial ideas during the struggles for the decolonization of African countries in the 1950s and 60s was crucial to the circulation of abolitionist ideas and anti-racist movements in the United States and abroad. We will analyze interchanges capable of pointing out "the recognition of multiple and heterogeneous colonial differences, as well as the multiple and heterogeneous reactions of populations and subjects subordinated to the coloniality of power" (Bernardino-Costa & Grosfoguel, 2016, p. 21). Our contribution seeks to analyze Davis as a public and militant intellectual through her images in film. Beyond considering Angela Davis's image in cinema as representation, we also analyze how her intellectual and political activities were involved with the flourishing of a new Black cinema in the United States. This paper analyzes films such as Child of Resistance (1973), Free Angela and All Political Prisoners (2015), and 13th (2016).

Abstract:interdisciplinary nature of this book makes it accessible to a wide audience. It includes contributions from leading scholars and academics from over 10 countries. It introduces some highly innovative topics and the methodological approach differs from any previous books on similar topics. Cinematics aims to review the mechanisms by which cinema and the moving image contribute to our understanding of cities while at the same time addressing two key issues: how do film-makers make use of cities and how do cities make use of cinema? It explores the use of cinema as a tool/approach to investigate the phenomena, experience and narrative of cities. It brings together the leading scholars in a variety of disciplines including architecture, urbanism and film studies. The Urban Cinematics book is organised into five thematic sections, which include fifteen academic papers by scholars from architecture, landscape, urban design and film studies, as well as four dialogues between film-makers and an academic audience.

Abstract:Digital communication, in recent decades, has evidenced significant transformations: on the one hand, in the adaptations and reinterpretations of the user and on the other, those transformations take place within the interface where there is a permanent dialogue with the strategies proposed by the industry. Today communication users perceive, act, respond, create new experiences, and coexist with these interfaces as a new media territory. Technological interfaces allow them, like language, to inhabit those spaces. The network has therefore become the symbolic space in which human-to-human interactions take place and not with the machine, as was believed. This edition, aligned with Thematic Group 19, Digital communication, networks and processes, of the Latin American Association of Researchers in Communication (ALAIC), proposes to reconstruct an overview of the state of research in new media and online processes, particularly with a comparative perspective in the Ibero-American context. This is a number that, although it was thought before the emergence of the pandemic, actively dialogues with the challenges of post-Covid-19 communication research, while exploring major structural transformations and digital mediation processes; it moves in the fields of large and new gaps and, above all, it contributes transversally to the role that the media will play in addressing digital human rights.

Abstract:This essay analyzes the visualization of Euro-American medicine and indigenous healing in John Steinbeck's 1941 documentary-drama The Forgotten Village. The movie juxtaposes film and medical discourse as exemplifications of modern, visual culture by showing excerpts from hygiene films and foregrounding medical imagery (e.g., bacteria cultures). The film displaces indigenous medicine by privileging a Euro-American medical model, and the gaze of oppression is perpetuated through humanitarian medical intervention. In short, disease is not simply a material fact but embedded in discourses about community identity, moral values, and politics.

Abstract:From early descriptions of cinema as 'living picture' to the 'crystal-images' evoked by Gilles Deleuze, the conceptualization of filmic media has left behind an impressive scaffold of organic metaphors and biological analogies. Although a mechanistic image of cinematic modernity prevailed in academia for many decades, we know now from the work of scholars such as Hannah Landecker, Antonio Somaini and Inga Pollmann that early and classical film theory were steeped in, and frequently interacted with, scientific and cultural discourses of life, natural environments, biological formation, and evolution.<a class="link link-ref link-reveal xref-fn js-xref-fn" href=""><sup>1</sup></a> In recent years, new critical approaches informed by philosophical vitalism and post-humanist materialisms have tended to dissolve the specificity of cinema, as a theoretical and historical object, within a greater ecology of animated media, while breaking down epistemological distinctions between subject and object, the vital and the technical, the human and the nonhuman, in a plasmatic sea of animacy. Opting both for more disciplinary specificity and a variety of methodological perspectives, this dossier will rearticulate moving images' involvement with nature in terms of aesthetic mediation – by which we hope to designate a historically determined range of formal structures and sensible environments, neither fixed nor arbitrary, that condition how moving-image work can be created and experienced.
