Detection of a very serious error in the paper: "On identifiability of nonlinear ODE models and applications in viral dynamics"

Abstract:This erratum highlights a very serious error in a paper published by SIAM Review in 2011. The error is in Section 6.2 of [1]. It is very important to notify this error because of the following two reasons: (i) [1] is one of the most cited contributions in the field of identifiability of viral dynamics models, and (ii)the error is relevant because, as a result of it, a very popular viral model (perhaps the most popular in the field of HIV dynamics) has been classified as identifiable. In contrast, three of its parameters are not identifiable, even locally. This erratum first proves the non uniqueness of the three unidentifiable parameters by exhibiting infinitely many distinct but indistinguishable values of them. The non uniqueness is even local. Then, this erratum details the error made by the authors of [1] which produced the claimed (but false) local identifiability of all the model parameters.

Abstract:In this erratum, we correct a mistake in a subcomponent of the numerical algorithm proposed in our recent study for modeling anisotropic reactive nonlinear viscoelasticity (doi:10.1115/1.4054983), for the special case where multiple weak bond families may be recruited with loading. This correction overcomes a nonphysical response noted under uni-axial cyclical loading.

Abstract:An error occurs in a part of the statement and proof of Proposition 2.2 in Jour. Math. Anal. and Appl., 476, (2019), 53-85 that is corrected in this erratum. The revised result reveals a new and unexpected critical phenomenon, having further implications for non-uniqueness of solutions to a nonlinear differential equation of the Riccati type.

Abstract:In this brief communication, we highlight several critical inaccuracies in the paper entitled “A novel methodology for a time-delayed controller to prevent nonlinear system oscillations,” identified by the DOI: 10.1177/14613484231195276. The core of the non-perturbative approach discussed in this paper is the introduction of a trial solution with an indeterminate nonlinear frequency. We elucidate the technical missteps and provide necessary corrections. The scrutinized article presents ample opportunities for enhancement, and we propose several amendments. Additionally, we reveal that the numerical outcomes showcased in the mentioned paper expose deficiencies in the proposed approximate solution. With the amendments implemented herein, a more precise numerical solution is achieved.
