Abstract:Todays, academic identity has been constantly criticized by some researches. They claim academic identity has lost. But some academics do not accept this criticism to all disciplines and they consider the humanities and social sciences to be ineffective. One way to find out this identity is to explore the discourse that governs dissertation defense sessions. The present research aimed to investigate the issue in a marginal university through ethnographic method. Due to achieve the aim, 31 observations of senior and doctoral defense sessions in various fields as well as 35 interviews with students, referee and guidance team were conducted. The results showed that only chemistry and physics disciplines rely on professional identity in defense sessions and accordingly the content of the dissertation is scrutinized. But in other academic disciplines, the dominant discourse of defense sessions is a formalist discourse in which the refereeing and supervisory teams devote all their time to the dissertation form and ultimately the method, and forget the content produced. Based on the institutional theory, the disciplines that have been formalized cannot be considered ineffective. Because the external environment of the university accepts and legitimizes the discourse of experimental disciplines, and because of this, there is an opportunity for professional discourse. This issue is not true to other disciplines, and its actors have no choice except to resort to form and method to protect their identity.
Difficulties Faced by Postgraduate Students during Writing MA Theses and PhD Dissertations in the Departments of English - Yemeni Universities from Supervisors’ Perspectives

Abstract:This study investigated the difficulties used in writing theses and dissertations in the departments of English at Yemeni universities. Data was collected from 100 MA and Ph.D. students through a questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS descriptive statistics. The results revealed that Yemeni postgraduate students face various difficulties, including selecting the appropriate tense, utilizing proper academic phrases, writing an effective topic sentence for each paragraph, employing cohesive devices such as ellipses, reporting qualitative results, and completing writing the thesis od dissertation before the deadline . The results also showed that the reasons for these difficulties attributed to the lack of reading, selecting a suitable study topic, and formulating a clear problem statement . To help postgraduate students overcome these difficulties, supervisors recommended various strategies. The most commonly suggested strategies included implementing a reading strategy, attending a specialized course for developing research proposals, and seeking guidance through a consulting strategy. The researcher recommended prioritizing reading to improve writing proficiency, selecting a manageable research topic, approaching the topic from different perspectives to avoid repetition, seeking guidance from experts and peers during thesis writing, formulating a clear, preparing research problem statement in their proposals, participating in specialized courses to learn how to write research proposals, and initiating the writing process by engaging in reading, brainstorming ideas, and elaborating upon them.

Abstract:The current study aimed to explore challenges faced by Arab doctoral students during their PhD program in an English Medium of Instruction (EMI) context. Besides, it intended to highlight the appropriate solutions provided by respondents to solve these challenges. Six Arab doctoral students (3 males and 3 females) were selected from different departments and Arab countries to participate in the study. The authors used semi-structured interviews as a qualitative method for obtaining specific responses by respondents. Later, the data were analyzed based on the content analysis technique. The findings showed different challenges facing Arab candidates during their program, specifically lacking experience in research methods, academic English, and publication. On the bases of the revealed results, the study provided implications, limitations, and future directions.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This paper analyses data and perceptions of graduate students in Education on the partial production of an article, a master's thesis and a PhD dissertation written by artificial intelligence (AI). The motivation for the study occurs due to the rise of AI for text generation, examining the trends and implications of algorithmic writing usage by graduate students. We analyzed data originating from 123 questionnaires, and primarily, the contents of 17 interviews conducted in 2021. Some conclusions were that 88.6% of the graduate students are unfamiliar with AI use for text production, though the aggregated frequency demonstrates a tendency to use it by 84.5% and the interviews, carried out in safeguarded conditions, by 70.6%; the admission of use varied among categories in the individual and in context scopes; "AI and human hybrid" and "standard" type texts emerge from content analysis; a notion of plagiarism by AI appears; moral and ethical issues come up both as conditions and as an opposition to the use of AI in written production.

Abstract:The doctoral dissertation is the final obstacle for most apprentice scholars. This paper considers the place and purpose of the dissertation and argues that it no longer provides an adequate preparation for the types of work that PhD graduates will do within and outside the academy. The common dissertation format — book length, single-authored, print-based — is at odds with a world where knowledge is made collaboratively and disseminated digitally. Moreover, the effort required to produce a dissertation keeps students from writing the many other genres of academic discourse, and reduces the opportunities that supervisors have to mentor new scholars. The paper finishes by offering a number of alternatives to the traditional dissertation and examines the barriers to implementing those alternatives.

Abstract:By crafting a dramatic script about struggling high school readers that I then shared with real students in my Reading classes, I applied Arts-based education research (ABER) methods. Through the writing, presentation, collection, and reflection on student feedback, as well as during the script rewriting process, I was allowed to engage in a unique and motivating research experience. This approach allowed me to attend to three challenges with my Dissertation in Practice (DiP). First, instead of being part of this big, scary, abstract world called ‘research’, it allowed me to demonstrate inquiry though a means that I was more familiar and confident with—writing and theatre. My confidence working in these areas allowed me to initiate and remain engaged throughout the dissertation work. Second, it allowed me to take on a problem in my practice—the skepticism of many high school students in Reading classes about being in those classes. This helped me better understand my students, and thus inform and guide in the identification of best practices. Third, it positioned me to work with colleagues and administrators in my building and across our school district to rethink how we offer reading support to the heterogeneous cross-section of students who currently are being identified as needing such support. This account summarizes my DiP and, I hope, positions other classroom teachers who double as EdD students to imagine new and effective ways forward as they engage with problems of practice.

Abstract:In this dissertation I would like to guide the reader to the research on dialogue but more precisely the research I have conducted during my career since my PhD thesis. Starting from modular architectures with machine learning/deep learning and reinforcement learning to end-to-end deep neural networks. Besides my work as research associate, I also present the work I have supervised in the last years. I review briefly the state of the art and highlight the open research problems on conversational agents. Afterwards, I present my contribution to Task-Oriented Dialogues (TOD), both as research associate and as the industrial supervisor of CIFRE theses. I discuss conversational QA. Particularly, I present the work of two PhD candidates Thibault Cordier and Sebastien Montella; as well as the work of the young researcher Quentin Brabant. Finally, I present the scientific project, where I discuss about Large Language Models (LLMs) for Task-Oriented Dialogue and Multimodal Task-Oriented Dialogue.

Abstract:An analytical review of the models and risks in the researcher’s reproduction system in the scientific specialty “1.2.1. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning” is presented. The issues of graduate school management and regulatory barriers in the training of young scientists are considered. Successful practices for defending a PhD thesis at leading national research universities have been identified and categorized. The justifications for the need to protect a PhD thesis by machine learning engineers are given. Proposals for changes to the scientific model of postgraduate studies and for AI augmentation of scientific research have been summarized, which help overcome risks in assigning qualification based on the textual results of scientific work.

Abstract:This article reflects on effective supervision and possible guidance for enhancing quality of doctoral research in the computer science and engineering field. The aims of this study are (1) to understand supervision and the role of supervisors in the quality of doctoral research, (2) to elaborate on effective supervision in the computer science and engineering field and challenges in effective supervision, and (3) to identify key indicators for evaluating effective supervision with a view to improving the quality of doctoral research. After studying various pieces of literature and conducting interviews with experienced supervisors and doctoral students, the article concludes by describing important characteristics in effective supervision. Some of the features for effective supervision are common to other areas of research; however, in computer science and engineering and similar fields, it is important that a supervisor takes the role of a team member by giving proper advice on the reports, algorithm and mathematical modeling developed in the research, and demonstrating the ability to provide advice on complex problems with practical approaches.

Abstract:This doctoral dissertation proposes a novel approach to enhance the development of smart services for the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). The proposed approach offers abstraction and automation to the software engineering processes, as well as the Data Analytics (DA) and Machine Learning (ML) practices. This is realized in an integrated and seamless manner. We implement and validate the proposed approach by extending an open source modeling tool, called ThingML. ThingML is a domain-specific language and modeling tool with code generation for the IoT/CPS domain. Neither ThingML nor any other IoT/CPS modeling tool supports DA/ML at the modeling level. Therefore, as the primary contribution of the doctoral dissertation, we add the necessary syntax and semantics concerning DA/ML methods and techniques to the modeling language of ThingML. Moreover, we support the APIs of several ML libraries and frameworks for the automated generation of the source code of the target software in Python and Java. Our approach enables platform-independent, as well as platform-specific models. Further, we assist in carrying out semiautomated DA/ML tasks by offering Automated ML (AutoML), in the background (in expert mode), and through model-checking constraints and hints at design-time. Finally, we consider three use case scenarios from the domains of network security, smart energy systems and energy exchange markets.

Abstract:Abstract This paper examines how an alternative to the traditional monograph form of the doctoral thesis is emerging that reflects a new approach to the valuation and designation of scientific outputs. This new approach, based on co-citation as underpinning principle for the measurement of knowledge structures, values knowledge and knowledge producers in increasingly quantitative terms. Such a change aligns with wider institutional market-based approaches that have been transforming higher education sectors world-wide. Under these influences, which prioritize quantification and tangibility of output, with quality equated with citation, the thesis, a key institution of the university, is now subject to pressures to transform and be constituted by a series of publishable papers, referred to by a variety of terms, the most common being ‘T hesis by Published Papers ’, although ‘J ournal Format Thesis ’, ‘ Alternative Format Thesis ’, and ‘ Integrated Thesis ’ are also used. While the scientific disciplines have traditionally been closer to this paper-based model, albeit with significant national variations, Social Sciences and Humanities subjects are now being affected. We present evidence from a small study of the UK higher education sector of organisational regulations in 54 departments concerning doctoral degree submission formats in two disciplines in the Humanities and Social Sciences (History and Sociology). We investigate the prevalence of this new practice, investigate some of its key aspects, and identify a number of questions for future research on this emerging and important topic.
