Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:This undergraduate thesis is concerned with developing the tools of differential geometry and semiclassical analysis needed to understand the the quantum ergodicity theorem of Schnirelman (1974), Zelditch (1987), and Colin de Verdière (1985) and the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture of Rudnick and Sarnak (1994). The former states that, on any Riemannian manifold with negative curvature or ergodic geodesic flow, the eigenfunctions of the Laplace-Beltrami operator equidistribute in phase space with density 1. Under the same assumptions, the latter states that the eigenfunctions induce a sequence of Wigner probability measures on fibers of the Hamiltonian in phase space, and these measures converge in the weak-* topology to the uniform Liouville measure. If true, the conjecture implies that such eigenfunctions equidistribute in the high-eigenvalue limit with no exceptional "scarring" patterns. This physically means that the finest details of chaotic Hamiltonian systems can never reflect their quantum-mechanical behaviors, even in the semiclassical limit. The main contribution of this thesis is to contextualize the question of quantum ergodicity and quantum unique ergodicity in an elementary analytic and geometric framework. In addition to presenting and summarizing numerous important proofs, such as Colin de Verdière's proof of the quantum ergodicity theorem, we perform graphical simulations of certain billiard flows and expositorily discuss several themes in the study of quantum chaos.

Abstract:The works of R. Descartes, I. M. Gelfand and A. Grothendieck have convinced us that commutative rings should be thought of as rings of functions on some appropriate (commutative) spaces. If we try to push this notion forward we reach the realm of Non-commutative Geometry. The confluence of ideas comes here mainly from three seemingly disparate sources, namely, quantum physics, operator algebras (Connes-style) and algebraic geometry. Following the title of the article, an effort has been made to provide an overview of the third point of view. Since na\" ive efforts to generalize commutative algebraic geometry fail, one goes to the root of the problem and tries to work things out "categorically". This makes the approach a little bit abstract but not abstruse. However, an honest confession must be made at the outset - this write-up is very far from being definitive; hopefully it will provide glimpses of some interesting developments at least.

Abstract:The purpose of this thesis is to present certain viewpoints on the geometric representation theory of Nakajima cyclic quiver varieties, in relation to the Maulik-Okounkov stable basis. Our main technical tool is the shuffle algebra, which arises as the K-theoretic Hall algebra of the double cyclic quiver. We prove the isomorphism between the shuffle algebra and the quantum toroidal algebra U_{q,t}(sl_n^^), and identify the quotients of Verma modules for the shuffle algebra with the K-theory groups of Nakajima cyclic quiver varieties, which were studied by Nakajima and Varagnolo-Vasserot. The shuffle algebra viewpoint allows us to construct the universal R-matrix of the quantum toroidal algebra U_{q,t}(sl_n^^), and to factor it in terms of pieces that arise from subalgebras isomorphic to quantum affine groups U_{q}(gl_m^), for various m. This factorization generalizes constructions of Khoroshkin-Tolstoy to the toroidal case, and matches the factorization that Maulik-Okounkov produce via the stable basis in the K-theory of Nakajima quiver varieties. We connect the two pictures by computing formulas for the root generators of U_{q,t}(sl_n^^) acting on the stable basis, which provide a wide extension of Murnaghan-Nakayama and Pieri type rules from combinatorics.

Abstract:Non-commutative geometry has significantly contributed to quantum mechanics by providing mathematical tools to extract topological and geometrical information from these systems. This thesis explores the methods used by Jean Bellissard and collaborators for analyzing homogeneous materials. The focus is on two topological algebras that extend Fourier analysis over $\mathbb{T}^d$ to study tight-binding models for homogeneous materials. These algebras, generalizations of $C(\mathbb{T}^d)$ and $C^{\infty}(\mathbb{T}^d)$, are considered anon-commutative smooth manifold, referred to as the Non-Commutative Brillouin Torus. Techniques from Fourier analysis, such as Fourier coefficients and Fejér summation, are adapted to this context, capturing the topological and smooth structure of the non-commutative manifold. The topological structure is represented by a C* algebra, while the smooth structure is captured by a smooth sub-algebra, forming the basis for constructing topological invariants of Hamiltonians through continuous cyclic cohomology. Additionally, the K theory of C* algebras and smooth sub-algebras is a crucial tool for studying topological invariants of Hamiltonians. Smooth sub-algebras share a functional calculus with C* algebras, providing sufficient information to study their K theory. This relationship is vital for identifying topological invariants of Hamiltonians, particularly under conditions like low temperature and electron density, which contribute to the quantization of transversal conductivity in homogeneous materials. This thesis aims to be a valuable resource for newcomers to the field.

Abstract:This document is a thesis presented for the ``Habilitation à diriger des recherches''. The first chapter provides some background and sketch the story of the classical Schur-Weyl duality and its quantum analogue involving the Hecke algebra. Quantum groups and their centralisers are discussed along with their connections with the braid group, the Yang-Baxter equation and the construction of link invariants. A quick review of several related notions of Hecke algebras concludes the first chapter. The second chapter presents the fused Hecke algebras and an application to the construction of solutions for the Yang-Baxter equation. The third chapter summarises recent works on diagonal centralisers of Lie algebras, and gives an application to the study of the missing label for sl(3). The last chapter discusses algebraic results on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and their applications to the study of link invariants.

Abstract:The first part of my thesis lays the foundations to generalized Lorentz geometry. The basic algebraic structure of finite-dimensional modules over the ring of generalized numbers is investigated. The motivation for this part of my thesis evolved from the main topic, the wave equation on singular space-times. The second and main part of my thesis is devoted to establishing a local existence and uniqueness theorem for the wave equation on singular space-times. The singular Lorentz metric subject to our discussion is modeled within the special algebra on manifolds in the sense of Colombeau. Inspired by an approach to generalized hyperbolicity of conical-space times due to Vickers and Wilson, we succeed in establishing certain energy estimates, which by a further elaborated equivalence of energy integrals and Sobolev norms allow us to prove existence and uniqueness of local generalized solutions of the wave equation with respect to a wide class of generalized metrics. The third part of my thesis treats three different point value resp. uniqueness questions in algebras of generalized functions

Abstract:I hesitated for a long time before giving shape to these notes, originally intended for preliminary reading by the attendees to the Summer School "New paths towards quantum gravity" (Holbaek Bay, Denmark, May 2008). At the end, I decide against just selling my mathematical wares, and for a survey, necessarily very selective, but taking a global phenomenological approach to its subject matter. After all, non-commutative geometry does not purport yet to solve the riddle of quantum gravity; it is more of an insurance policy against the probable failure of the other approaches. The plan is as follows: the introduction invites students to the fruitful doubts and conundrums besetting the application of even classical gravity. Next, the first experiments detecting quantum gravitational states inoculate us a healthy dose of skepticism on some of the current ideologies. In Section 3 we look at the action for general relativity as a consequence of gauge theory for quantum tensor fields. Section 4 briefly deals with the unimodular variants. Section 5 arrives at non-commutative geometry. I am convinced that, if this is to play a role in quantum gravity, commutative and non-commutative manifolds must be treated on the same footing; which justifies the place granted to the reconstruction theorem. Together with Section 3, this part constitutes the main body of the notes. Only very summarily at the end of this section we point to some approaches to gravity within the non-commutative realm. The last section delivers a last dose of skepticism. My efforts will have been rewarded if someone from the young generation learns to mistrust current mindsets.

Abstract:This is my habilitation thesis. As the tradition wants, I tried to give an introduction of my field of research. I post it on the ArXiv with the hope it can be useful to young researchers looking for a short and friendly text on cohomologies of algebraic varieties, periods, algebraic cycles and motives. I might one day find the energy to expand these notes and maybe translate them in English. In the meantime, please feel free to ask questions. The first sections of this text propose an introduction to the theory, I tried to present points of view and examples which are not always stressed in the literature. A leitmotif of the thesis is the difference between phenomena in characteristic zero and those in positive characteristic. The main results are: the standard conjecture of Hodge type for abelian foufolds; the construction of a class of $p$-adic periods controlled by motivic Galois groups and for which it is possible to formulate a $p$-adic analog of the Grothendieck period conjecture; the standard conjecture of Lefschetz type for the Laza--Saccà--Voisin varieties and the Chow-Künneth conjecture for commutative group schemes. The techniques are based on $p$-adic Hodge theory, representation theory, perverse sheaves and motivic complexes à la Voevodsky.

Abstract:The differential geometry on a Hopf algebra is constructed, by using the basic axioms of Hopf algebras and noncommutative differential geometry. The space of generalized derivations on a Hopf algebra of functions is presented via the smash product, and used to define and discuss quantum Lie algebras and their properties. The Cartan calculus of the exterior derivative, Lie derivative, and inner derivation is found for both the universal and general differential calculi of an arbitrary Hopf algebra, and, by restricting to the quasitriangular case and using the numerical R-matrix formalism, the aforementioned structures for quantum groups are determined.

Abstract:Studying the geometry of sets appearing in various problems of quantum information helps in understanding different parts of the theory. It is thus worthwhile to approach quantum mechanics from the angle of geometry -- this has already provided a multitude of interesting results. In this thesis I demonstrate results relevant to numerical ranges -- the sets of simultaneously attainable expectation values of several observables. In particular, I apply this notion in the problems related to uncertainty relations, entanglement detection, and determining bounds for the value of spectral gap. Apart from this, I present geometric structures helping with the question of state interconversion using channels commuting with a particular representation of a group.

Abstract:Noncommutative Euclidean spaces—otherwise known as Moyal spaces or quantum Euclidean spaces—are a standard example of a non-compact noncommutative geometry. Recent progress in the harmonic analysis of these spaces gives us the opportunity to highlight some of their peculiar features. For example, the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations has unexpected properties in this noncommutative setting. We develop elementary aspects of paradifferential calculus for noncommutative Euclidean spaces and give some applications to nonlinear evolution equations. We demonstrate how the analysis of some equations radically simplifies in the strictly noncommutative setting.

Abstract:This thesis studies the Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus with a particular boundary curve system, and in particular a diagrammatic presentation of it due to Russell. This module has deep connections to topology and categorification: it is isomorphic to both the total homology of the (n,n)-Springer variety and the 0th Hochschild homology of the Khovanov arc ring H^n. We can also view the Bar-Natan--Russell skein module from a representation-theoretic viewpoint as an extension of the Frenkel--Khovanov graphical description of the Lusztig dual canonical basis of the nth tensor power of the fundamental U_q(sl_2)-representation. One of our primary results is to extend a dualization construction of Khovanov using Jones--Wenzl projectors from the Lusztig basis to the Russell basis. We also construct and explore several deformations of the Russell skein module. One deformation is a quantum deformation that arises from embedding the Russell skein module in a space that obeys Kauffman--Lins diagrammatic relations. Our quantum version recovers the original Russell space when q is specialized to -1 and carries a natural braid group action that recovers the symmetric group action of Russell and Tymoczko. We also present an equivariant deformation that arises from replacing the TQFT algebra A used in the construction of the rings H^n by the equivariant homology of the two-sphere with the standard action of U(2) and taking the 0th Hochschild homology of the resulting deformed arc rings. We show that the equivariant deformation has the expected rank. Finally, we consider the Khovanov two-functor F from the category of tangles. We show that it induces a surjection from the space of cobordisms of planar (2m, 2n)-tangles to the space of (H^m, H^n)-bimodule homomorphisms and give an explicit description of the kernel. We use our result to introduce a new quotient of the Russell skein module.

Abstract:This thesis is driven by a central question: "What can we learn from random geometries about the structure of quantum spacetime?" In Chapter 2, we provide a partial review of the mathematical foundation of this thesis, random geometry. In Chapter 3, we use a construction coming from random geometry called Mating of Trees to build scale-invariant random geometries that appear in Liouville Quantum Gravity and have the potential to implement the UV fixed point predicted by Asymptotic Safety in two and three dimensions. In Chapter 4 we explore the random geometry formulation of JT gravity and how our understanding of random critical maps yields the discovery of a new family of deformations of JT gravity. Furthermore, the connection between JT gravity and matrix models leads us to delve deeper into the link between discrete geometry and hyperbolic surfaces, building upon the geometry of metric maps and irreducible metric maps in Chapter 5.
