Abstract:Conformal Quantum Field Theories (CFT) in 1 or 1+1 spacetime dimensions (respectively called chiral and full CFTs) admit several "axiomatic" (mathematically rigorous and model-independent) formulations. In this note, we deal with the von Neumann algebraic formulation due to Haag and Kastler, mainly restricted to the chiral CFT setting. Irrespectively of the chosen formulation, one can ask the questions: given a theory $\mathcal{A}$, how many and which are the possible extensions $\mathcal{B} \supset \mathcal{A}$ or subtheories $\mathcal{B} \subset \mathcal{A}$? How to construct and classify them, and study their properties? Extensions are typically described in the language of algebra objects in the braided tensor category of representations of $\mathcal{A}$, while subtheories require different ideas. In this paper, we review recent structural results on the study of subtheories in the von Neumann algebraic formulation (conformal subnets) of a given chiral CFT (conformal net). Furthermore, building on [BDG23], we provide a "quantum Galois theory" for conformal nets analogous to the one for Vertex Operator Algebras (VOA). We also outline the case of 3+1 dimensional Algebraic Quantum Field Theories (AQFT). The aforementioned results make use of families of (extreme) vacuum state preserving unital completely positive maps acting on the net of von Neumann algebras, hereafter called quantum operations. These are natural generalizations of the ordinary vacuum preserving gauge automorphisms, hence they play the role of "generalized global gauge symmetries". Quantum operations suffice to describe all possible conformal subnets of a given conformal net with the same central charge.

Fusion and positivity in chiral conformal field theory

Abstract:In this article we show that the conformal nets corresponding to WZW models are rational, resolving a long-standing open problem. Specifically, we show that the Jones-Wassermann subfactors associated with these models have finite index. This result was first conjectured in the early 90s but had previously only been proven in special cases, beginning with Wassermann's landmark results in type A. The proof relies on a new framework for the systematic comparison of tensor products (a.k.a. `fusion') of conformal net representations with the corresponding tensor product of vertex operator algebra modules. This framework is based on the geometric technique of `bounded localized vertex operators,' which realizes algebras of observables via insertion operators localized in partially thin Riemann surfaces. We obtain a general method for showing that Jones-Wassermann subfactors have finite index, and apply it to additional families of important examples beyond WZW models. We also consider applications to a class of positivity phenomena for VOAs, and use this to outline a program for identifying unitary tensor product theories of VOAs and conformal nets even for badly-behaved models.

Geometric realization of algebraic conformal field theories

Abstract:We explore new connections between the fields and local observables in two dimensional chiral conformal field theory. We show that in a broad class of examples, the von Neumann algebras of local observables (a conformal net) can be obtained from the fields (a unitary vertex operator algebra) via a continuous geometric interpolation procedure involving Graeme Segal's functorial definition of conformal field theory. In particular, we construct conformal nets from these unitary vertex operator algebras by showing that 'geometrically mollified' versions of the fields yield bounded, local operators on the Hilbert space completion of the vertex algebra. This work is inspired by Henriques' picture of conformal nets arising from degenerate Riemann surfaces.

Unveiling chiral states in the XXZ chain: Finite-size scaling probing symmetry-enriched $c=1$ conformal field theories

Abstract:We study the low-energy properties of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with time-reversal symmetry-breaking pseudo-scalar chiral interaction and propose a phase diagram for the model. In the integrable case of the isotropic Heisenberg model with the chiral interaction, we employ the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to find "chiralization", the response of the ground state versus the strength of the pseudo-scalar chiral interaction of a chiral Heisenberg chain. Unlike the magnetization case, the chirality of the ground state remains zero until the transition point corresponding to critical coupling $\alpha_c=2J/\pi$ with $J$ being the antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction. The central-charge $c=1$ conformal field theories (CFTs) describe the two phases with zero and finite chirality. We show for this particular case and conjecture more generally for similar phase transitions that the difference between two emergent CFTs with identical central charges lies in the symmetry of their ground state (lightest weight) primary fields, i.e., the two phases are symmetry-enriched CFTs. At finite but small temperatures, the non-chiral Heisenberg phase acquires a finite chirality that scales with the temperature quadratically. We show that the finite-size effect around the transition point probes the transition.

Abstract:This article reviews some recent progress in our understanding of the structure of rational conformal field theories, based on ideas that originate for a large part in the work of A. Ocneanu. The consistency conditions that generalize modular invariance for a given RCFT in the presence of various types of boundary conditions—open, twisted—are encoded in a system of integer multiplicities that form matrix representations of fusion-like algebras. These multiplicities are also the combinatorial data that enable one to construct an abstract “quantum” algebra, whose 6j-and 3j-symbols contain essential information on the operator product algebra of the RCFT and are part of a cell system, subject to pentagonal identities. It looks quite plausible that the classification of a wide class of RCFT amounts to a classification of “Weak C*- Hopf algebras”.

Abstract:While chiral quantum field theories (QFTs) describe a wide range of physical systems, from the standard model to topological quantum matter, the realization of chiral QFTs on a lattice has proved to be difficult due to the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem and the possible presence of quantum anomalies. In this thesis, we use the connection between chiral phases of matter and chiral quantum field theories (QFTs) to define chiral QFTs on a lattice and allow a huge class of exotic field theories to be simulated numerically. Our work builds on the 'mirror fermion' approach to the problem of defining chiral theories on a lattice, which defines chiral field theories as the edge modes of chiral phases. We begin by reviewing the deep connections between chiral phases of matter, chiral field theories, and anomalies. We then develop numerical treatments of an $SU(2)$ chiral field theory, and provide a semiclassically solvable definition of Abelian $2+1$ chiral topological orders. This leads to an exactly solvable definition of chiral $U(1)$ SPT phases with zero correlation length, which we use to extract the edge chiral field theories exactly. These zero-correlation length models are vastly more simple than previous approaches to defining chiral field theories on the lattice.

Von Neumann Entropy in QFT

Abstract:In the framework of Quantum Field Theory, we provide a rigorous, operator algebraic notion of entanglement entropy associated with a pair of open double cones $O \subset \tilde O$ of the spacetime, where the closure of $O$ is contained in $\tilde O$. Given a QFT net $A$ of local von Neumann algebras $A(O)$, we consider the von Neumann entropy $S_A(O, \tilde O)$ of the restriction of the vacuum state to the canonical intermediate type $I$ factor for the inclusion of von Neumann algebras $A(O)\subset A(\tilde O)$ (split property). We show that this canonical entanglement entropy $S_A(O, \tilde O)$ is finite for the chiral conformal net on the circle generated by finitely many free Fermions (here double cones are intervals). To this end, we first study the notion of von Neumann entropy of a closed real linear subspace of a complex Hilbert space, that we then estimate for the local free fermion subspaces. We further consider the lower entanglement entropy $\underline S_A(O, \tilde O)$, the infimum of the vacuum von Neumann entropy of $F$, where $F$ here runs over all the intermediate, discrete type $I$ von Neumann algebras. We prove that $\underline S_A(O, \tilde O)$ is finite for the local chiral conformal net generated by finitely many commuting $U(1)$-currents.

Abstract:We construct a family of 1D and 2D long-range SU(2) spin models as parent Hamiltonians associated with infinite dimensional matrix product states that arise from simple current correlation functions in $SU(2)_k$ WZW models. Our results provide a conformal field theory foundation for recent proposals by Greiter and coauthors regarding the realization of non-abelian chiral spin liquids. We explain, in particular, how the symmetrization procedure for the amplitudes of the ground state wave function suggested in Ref.

Algebraic structures in two-dimensional conformal field theory

Abstract:This is an invited contribution to the 2nd edition of the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics. We review the following algebraic structures which appear in two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT): The symmetries of two-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) can be formalised as chiral algebras, vertex operator algebras or nets of observable algebras. Their representation categories are abelian categories having additional structures, which are induced by properties of conformal blocks, i.e. of vector bundles over the moduli space of curves with marked points, which can be constructed from the symmetry structure. These mathematical notions pertain to the description of chiral CFTs. In a full local CFT one deals in addition with correlators, which are specific elements in the spaces of conformal blocks. In fact, a full CFT is the same as a consistent system of correlators for arbitrary conformal surfaces with any number and type of field insertions in the bulk as well as on boundaries and on topological defect lines. We present algebraic structures that allow one to construct such systems of correlators.

On a class of conformal $\mathcal{E}$-models and their chiral Poisson algebras

Abstract:In this paper, we study conformal points among the class of $\mathcal{E}$-models. The latter are $\sigma$-models formulated in terms of a current Poisson algebra, whose Lie-theoretic definition allows for a purely algebraic description of their dynamics and their 1-loop RG-flow. We use these results to formulate a simple algebraic condition on the defining data of such a model which ensures its 1-loop conformal invariance and the decoupling of its observables into two chiral Poisson algebras, describing the classical left- and right-moving fields of the theory. In the case of so-called non-degenerate $\mathcal{E}$-models, these chiral sectors form two current algebras and the model takes the form of a WZW theory once realised as a $\sigma$-model. The case of degenerate $\mathcal{E}$-models, in which a subalgebra of the current algebra is gauged, is more involved: the conformal condition yields a wider class of theories, which includes gauged WZW models but also other examples, seemingly different, which however sometimes turn out to be related to gauged WZW models based on other Lie algebras. For this class, we build non-local chiral fields of parafermionic-type as well as higher-spin local ones, forming classical $\mathcal{W}$-algebras. In particular, we find an explicit and efficient algorithm to build these local chiral fields. These results (and their potential generalisations discussed at the end of the paper) open the way for the quantisation of a large class of conformal $\mathcal{E}$-models using the standard operator formalism of two-dimensional CFT.

Non-unitary Wightman CFTs and non-unitary vertex algebras

Abstract:We give an equivalence of categories between: (i) Möbius vertex algebras which are equipped with a choice of generating family of quasiprimary vectors, and (ii) (not-necessarily-unitary) Möbius-covariant Wightman conformal field theories on the unit circle. We do not impose any technical restrictions on the theories considered (such as finite-dimensional conformal weight spaces or simplicity), yielding the most general equivalence between these two axiomatizations of two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. This provides new opportunities to study non-unitary vertex algebras using the lens of algebraic conformal field theory and operator algebras, which we demonstrate by establishing a non-unitary version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem.

Abstract:We study the chiral limit of 2d QCD with a single quark flavor at finite N c using LCT. By modifying the LCT basis according to the quark mass in a manner motivated by 't Hooft's analysis, we are able to restore convergence for quark masses much smaller than the QCD strong coupling scale. For such small quark masses, the IR of the theory is expected to be well described by the Sine-Gordon model. We verify that LCT numerics are able to capture in detail the spectrum and correlation functions of the Sine-Gordon model. This opens up the possibility for studying deformations of various integrable CFTs using LCT by considering the chiral limit of QCD like theories.

Abstract:We study chiral algebra in the reduction of 3D $\mathcal{N} = 2 $ supersymmetric gauge theories on an interval with the $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Dirichlet boundary conditions on both ends. By invoking the 3D ``twisted formalism'' and the 2D $\beta\gamma$-description we explicitly find the perturbative $\overline{Q}_+$ cohomology of the reduced theory. It is shown that the vertex algebras of boundary operators are enhanced by the line operators. A full non-perturbative result is found in the abelian case, where the chiral algebra is given by the rank two Narain lattice VOA, and two more equivalent descriptions are provided. Conjectures and speculations on the nonperturbative answer in the non-abelian case are also given.

Abstract:This document is a thesis presented for the ``Habilitation à diriger des recherches''. The first chapter provides some background and sketch the story of the classical Schur-Weyl duality and its quantum analogue involving the Hecke algebra. Quantum groups and their centralisers are discussed along with their connections with the braid group, the Yang-Baxter equation and the construction of link invariants. A quick review of several related notions of Hecke algebras concludes the first chapter. The second chapter presents the fused Hecke algebras and an application to the construction of solutions for the Yang-Baxter equation. The third chapter summarises recent works on diagonal centralisers of Lie algebras, and gives an application to the study of the missing label for sl(3). The last chapter discusses algebraic results on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and their applications to the study of link invariants.

Abstract:We revise the use of 8-dimensional conformal, complex (Cartan) domains as a base for the construction of conformally invariant quantum (field) theory, either as phase or configuration spaces. We follow a gauge-invariant Lagrangian approach (of nonlinear sigma-model type) and use a generalized Dirac method for the quantization of constrained systems, which resembles in some aspects the standard approach to quantizing coadjoint orbits of a group G. Physical wave functions, Haar measures, orthonormal basis and reproducing (Bergman) kernels are explicitly calculated in and holomorphic picture in these Cartan domains for both scalar and spinning quantum particles. Similarities and differences with other results in the literature are also discussed and an extension of Schwinger's Master Theorem is commented in connection with closure relations. An adaptation of the Born's Reciprocity Principle (BRP) to the conformal relativity, the replacement of space-time by the 8-dimensional conformal domain at short distances and the existence of a maximal acceleration are also put forward.

A $C^*$-Algebraic Approach to Parametrized Quantum Spin Systems and Their Phases in One Spatial Dimension

Abstract:This thesis investigates parametrized quantum spin systems in the thermodynamic limit from a $C^*$-algebraic point of view. Our main physical result is the construction of a phase invariant for one-dimensional quantum spin chains parametrized by a topological space $X$. This invariant is constructed using $C^*$-algebraic techniques and takes values in degree one Čech cohomology $H^1(X;\mathbb{P}\mathrm{U}(\mathscr{H}))$, where $\mathbb{P}\mathrm{U}(\mathscr{H})$ is the projective unitary group of an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space $\mathscr{H}$, endowed with the strong operator topology. Using Dixmier-Douady theory [Bry93, DD63, HJJS08] one may equivalently view this as an element of $H^3(X;\mathbb{Z})$. An exactly solvable model of a one-dimensional spin system parametrized by the 3-sphere $X = \mathbb{S}^3$ is presented and it is shown that its invariant is nontrivial [WQB+22]. We also prove several mathematical results on topological aspects of the pure state space $\mathscr{P}(\mathfrak{A})$ of a $C^*$-algebra $\mathfrak{A}$. We prove that $\mathscr{P}(\mathfrak{A})$, endowed with the weak* topology, has trivial fundamental group for every UHF algebra $\mathfrak{A}$ [BHM+23]. We review the results of [SMQ+22] that show how the outputs of the GNS representation and Kadison transitivity theorem can be understood to depend continuously on their inputs. These results are expanded upon with the construction of a distinguished Čech class in $H^1(\mathscr{P}(\mathfrak{A});\mathrm{U}(1))$ that generalizes the principal $\mathrm{U}(1)$-bundle $\mathbb{S} \mathscr{H} \rightarrow \mathbb{P} \mathscr{H}$ in a representation independent way, where $\mathbb{S} \mathscr{H}$ and $\mathbb{P} \mathscr{H}$ are the unit sphere and projective Hilbert space of $\mathscr{H}$. Finally, we prove a selection theorem in the vein of [SMQ+22] for the weak* topology on $\mathscr{P}(\mathfrak{A})$.
