Abstract:This paper discusses the use of lettering and typeface in the linguistic landscape in Italy during the Fascist period (1922–1943), focusing on inscriptions on public buildings and the lettering used in propaganda posters and other materials. After a general introduction, some definitions, and an overview of Italian Fascism, the paper introduces the methodology employed, which consists first of an analysis of the lettering used in Fascist public writings and their link to ancient Rome on the one hand and modernity on the other, and second of a simple test carried out among a sample of students at Universiti Malaya (Malaysia) to investigate their perception of ‘Fascist’ fonts. There follows an analysis and discussion of the data, which leads to the conclusion that some of the ideas behind this right-wing movement seem to be portrayed by the specific lettering and fonts used. Finally, these conclusions are compared to those arrived at in previous research on fonts

Abstract:Italy was the homeland of Fascism (proper noun). From 1922 until 1943, a self-described Fascist regime ruled the country. As a result of the national election on 25 September 2022, a political party with its roots in that Fascism became the dominant partner in a far-right coalition national government. Does this signify the full-fledged return of the past for Italy's future or does it represent something else again? As Umberto Eco once claimed, Fascism was an unstable cocktail of beliefs and practices associated increasingly with the whims of one man: Benito Mussolini. From this perspective, unlike Nazism, which can be plausibly defined neatly in terms of its central obsessions with biological races and anti-semitism, Fascism has lent itself to multiple interpretations. Hence, fascism (common noun) has become a term used in a myriad of ways to describe a range of political ideologies, albeit all anchored to the singular significance of national identities at the expense of much else. I challenge Eco's claim that Fascism had no elemental ideological core and then trace the history of Fascism in Italy and how its memory lived on after the demise of the regime most intimately connected to it. I then turn to recent Italian politics and what the changed historical-geographical context of the times suggests about which elements, if any, of the original Fascism can be expected to re-emerge under the new regime. I end with the conclusion that whatever “fascism” does presently emerge in Italy will be unlike the original version. In fact, most of the core of what branded the original Fascism looks mostly irreproducible in contemporary Italy.

Abstract:Summary Italian Fascism anchored its revolutionary ideology in the Roman past, embedding and legitimising changes in every sphere of life through an appeal to a supposedly shared Roman heritage. In this article, we scrutinise these Fascist dynamics of anchoring through an analysis of the Mussolini obelisk in Rome and the Latin text hidden below it: Aurelio Amatucci’s Codex Fori Mussolini. We focus especially on the Fascist manipulation of the obelisk tradition, the significance of Amatucci’s choice of language, and his use of ancient authors within the Codex . We argue that the ‘ground’ in which monument and text are anchored is fundamentally unstable: the Roman past itself is a dynamic and adaptable construction. Obelisk and Codex selectively evoke and (re-)combine a multiplicity of elements – from antiquity to the twentieth century, from the Renaissance to the Risorgimento. In doing so, obelisk and text shape the very tradition in which they anchor.

Abstract:Mussolini's abrupt turn towards antisemitism in October 1938 is conventionally explained by virtue of external factors, most importantly, as an aspect of Fascist Italy's strategic alliance with Nazi Germany. Adler explores a complementary hypothesis that accounts for racism in terms of factors internal to the dynamics of Italian Fascism itself, namely, a progressive radicalization of the regime during the 1930s aimed at the realization of a new imperial-totalitarian state, one that, in turn, would create a new homogeneous nation and indeed a New Man, a uomo fascista. Unlike Nazi racism, oriented backward towards the preservation of a given racial purity, Fascist racism categorically rejected Italians as they had been constituted historically. Instead, it was oriented towards a future project, an anthropological revolution that would create nothing less than a new race. Jews were seen as obstacles to this cultural transformation because they were historically bound to the decadent liberal state, as well as to the corrupting bourgeois spirit that informed it.

Thoughts about the nature of fascism have emerged in literature. Umberto Eco's novel The Name of the Rose depicts the characteristics of fascism in symbolic language. Fourteen characteristics are described by him. Terrorism, religious fundamentalism, and monogamy are the basis of fascism. Salma in her short story called Darkness, points out that such terrorism in India works with the dual nature of Hindu-Muslim. In her story she explains that each individual is a fascist.

Abstract:This text compares four essays dealing with war, state terror in dictatorships, social violence such as racism, mourning and the avoidance of mourning. It shows that dictatorships share similarities in their techniques of manipulation, linguistic style and reference to history. They seek to exploit national myths through manipulative alienation. Myths are a central element of cultural memory, and their effect can be understood through a model of internal dialogue. This dialogue determines whether the regime's attempts at manipulation are successful.

Abstract:Under the immediate appearance of a simple prose, Orwell’s masterpiece Nineteen Eighty–Four is a philosophical understanding of dictatorship, which is still relevant nowadays as a source of reflections about power. Indeed, the book was regarded by the dissident intellectuals of the East as a “realistic and detailed analysis of the mechanisms of power”1, rather than as just a novel. The device that makes totalitarian domination possible is clearly shown in the novel as a scheme that operates in order not only to manipulate, but mainly to define the domain of truth: the Newspeak. It is in relation to it that the language fully acquires its importance in the novel. Undeniably, by controlling language and information through a complex coercive apparatus, the Party realizes a mind control of its subjects that is “total” in both extension and intensity. In extension, because the totality of the subjects is dominated; in intensity, because any individual thought is totally dominated. To understand how Orwell can conceive of such a tragic result in relation to the language, the ontological foundation of this linguistic device has to be investigated. This is well shown in the novel, particularly by some O’Brien’s statements:

Abstract:Abstract This paper examines the ways in which “ordinariness” can come to be exemplified as a virtue. It does so by comparing the status of ordinariness in historical and present-day Predappio, the town in which Mussolini was born and is buried. It describes the ways in which Predappio was mobilized by the Fascist regime as an exemplar of an ordinary Italian town, rendered extraordinary by its wholesale reconstruction as a jewel in the crown of Fascist urban planning. In similar fashion, Mussolini’s ordinary rural upbringing was mobilized in the service of propagandizing his extraordinary and exemplary leadership. In contemporary Predappio, by contrast, ordinariness is what locals reach for to contest understandings of their home as irrevocably associated with the extraordinary Fascist heritage they have inherited. One of the ways in which they do so is to celebrate a local exemplar of this ordinariness, Giuseppe Ferlini, the town’s first postwar mayor. In contrast to Mussolini, Ferlini’s ordinariness is not a backdrop to future greatness, but exactly the quality for which he is celebrated. I assert that these cases demonstrate the need for vigilance in analytic usage of the category of “the ordinary,” which sometimes tacitly assumes the existence of “the ordinary” as a scale in itself, independent of human action. I argue instead that “the ordinary” may be the object of ethical labor, rather than its site, and that exemplification may be a form of such labor, in both our accounts and the lives of those we study.

Abstract:Abstract In 1961, Italy celebrated the hundredth anniversary of its unification. A wide range of initiatives commemorated the centennial, highlighting the glorious deeds of the Risorgimento and their long-term, positive legacy. Seven years later, Japan embarked on a similar task with the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the Meiji Restoration (1868). Like the Italian National Jubilee, the Japanese one praised the country’s achievements, presenting Meiji Restoration as a successful transformation unmatched in world history. Although there is literature about the Italian and Japanese centennials, there has been no attempt to comparatively analyse them. Yet, the two jubilees reveal interesting similarities that deserve further attention. In both cases, the official commemorative agenda proposed a self-congratulatory narrative linking the ideal starting point of modernization – Risorgimento/Meiji Restoration – to the arrival point, namely the economic “miracles” that the two countries were experiencing. Both in Italy and in Japan, the anniversaries posed crucial questions concerning the historical assessment of the totalitarian regimes. Finally, in both cases the celebrations were the subject of intense domestic debates. Through an investigation of carefully selected first-hand sources in Italian and Japanese, the paper will make a comparative analysis of the Italian National Jubilee and the Meiji Centennial in order to gain theoretical insights on the way the parties in power used history to build national identity.
From narrative to counter-narrative: the European constraint and the rise of Italian populist Euroscepticism

Abstract:<span>This article argues that in Italy since the 1950s many Europhile technocrats conceived of the European Community as an external constraint needed to regulate a country that was incapable of governing itself. With the Maastricht Treaty this constraint was transformed into a key element of the public narrative about 'Europe'. The emphasis placed on budgetary discipline that must be respected to join the Eurozone promoted an identification between tool and objective: the constraint <i>was</i> Europe. The recent economic-financial crises paved the way for a reversal of the meaning of the constraint, which turned into a negative paradigm. This reversal implies a form of 'othering': 'Europe' is opposed to the Italian people. Eurosceptic parties have promoted and taken advantage of this reversal. The alleged otherness of 'Europe' has given them the chance to call for a return to full national sovereignty. Based on theanalysis of archival and media sources, autobiographies and the existing literature about the contemporary history of Italy and its role in European integration, this article traces the historical trajectory of the pro-integration narrative of the 'European constraint'. It will also show how this narrative produced unintended consequences that have strongly shaped Eurosceptic counter-narratives to the EU in Italy.</span>

Abstract:The centennial anniversary of the end of World War I brought leaders of tens of countries together in Paris. Despite the unity with which the commemorations were carried out, war memorials in different states have often accomplished various goals. This paper will focus on how WWI memorials have aided in the building of national collective memories in Britain, France, and Germany, and will assess their role in the creation and replication of national identities. Memorials evoking 'modes of collectivity' as well as 'atmospheres of remembrance' will be discussed to show the prevalence of commemorations in the victorious states.
