Abstract:After the end of the Second World War, concurrently with the massive arrests of intellectuals, the imposition of false notions and generally valid atheistic behavior, literature--and especially Romanian prose--faced a harsh ideological regulation, being given "major objectives" of combating the bourgeois-landlord scourge, on the one hand, and glorifying the unshakable alliance between the worker and the Soviet farm-worker on the other. Any deviation was severely rebuked from the very beginning, the literary censorship and political propagandists of the proletarian ideology would despotically control every sketch, story, short story, novel (alongside with their authors). Under such conditions, the theorization of the narrative model of the prose writer Fănuș Neagu can outline a critical synthesis image of the entire Romanian post-war prose--or of a spectrum as wide as possible--the lasting element of which is lyricism, as the main feature of the Romanian novel of that period, an epic species nourished artistically from the balladesque tradition of the folk literature, on the one hand, and from the "taking over" from and "fitting" to the narrative techniques of European literature, especially the French one as well. The rise in Romanian literature of Fănuş Neagu symbolized the "necessary adjustment" (Eugen Simion), the illustrious revenge in front of the totalitarian stigma, just as the debut of Ion Druţă in the ankylosing landscape of Bessarabian literature meant the proof of firm qualities of deep renewal of the undisguised epic, definitively abandoning the straitjacket of communist ideology. Fănuş Neagu, as Ion Druță, abolished the "ideological front", "unslaved" the post-war prose and removed the rigid dogmatic barriers.

Abstract:The encounters of the Romanian philosopher C. Noica with his youger disciples - Gabriel Liicean, Andrei Pleșu, Sorin Vieru et alii - in the transylvanian Carpathian mountains, in the Păltiniș resort were perceived by Noica’s followers as a real philosophical school and an idealistic alternative to the compulsory marxist ideology. In spite of that, the orthodox thinker and literary critic N. Steinhardt took it as a way of avoiding the tough reality of communism and a negation of the Christian religion. Therefore, he criticised that option and the pretention of the “Păltiniș School” to create a viable alternative to the officially imposed marxist vision. Steinhardt’s article received critical answers not only from the members of the so-called School, but also from another thinker and literary critic, Adrian Marino, who thought that both Noica and Steinhardt are wrong and the younger thinkers should act against Nicolae Ceaușescu’s agressive dictatorship by meas of civic and democratic activity. The study tries to emphasize the existence of more than one alternative to the communist ideology in Romania’s 1980s, generally considered as a frozen epoch for free philosophical and politically relevant discussions.

Abstract:Culture &Psychology, Ahead of Print. This paper presents a discursive and sociocultural approach to the rhetoric of ideological transgression in the archives of the Securitate (the infamous Romanian communist secret police) during the Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (1948–65) and Nicolae Ceaușescu (1965–89) periods. First, we explore Securitate's discursive practices of defining and responding to ideological transgression and antagonism. We examine the case of two suspected legionaries (Constantin Vaman and Petru Mureșan) to illustrate how the Securitate chose to catalogue and describe those it considered prototypical ideological antagonists. We look at the language and categories used in Securitate files, surveillance operative reports, and instructional manuals to describe people the communist state deemed 'enemies of the state.' The first part of the paper offers a brief historical overview of the Securitate and its role in quelling opposition and dissent. We then highlight the contribution of discursive psychology to the analysis of discursive practices of a professional community in the service of state power as a cultural form of communication. Finally, we show how psychological language is strategically mobilized to define a particular class of ideologically transgressive behavior in Securitate's surveillance apparatus.

Making and contesting far right sites of memory. A case study on Romania

Abstract:Among the strategies followed by far right groups for normalising their messages of intolerance in contemporary Europe, sites of memory play a pivotal role. Adopting an actor-centred and instrumentalist perspective of memory work and memory politics, the article considers sites of memory as products of the framing and staging of the past by the memory entrepreneurs, leading figures within the community of remembrance who, mastering the art of memorialisation, strive to establish their revisionist history within the state-endorsed memory politics. The far right memory entrepreneurs spatialise their memory work in sites of memory that downplay the history of violence of their group and present its heroic and patriotic side. The degree of success in contesting such sites shows whether the memory entrepreneurs have succeeded in normalising their messages. The article analyses the making and the contestation of a site of memory established by the far right in post-communist in Romania.

Abstract:"Romanian cinema needs to start again from scratch. It has to regain a sense of everyday reality and it has to render truthfully an important slice of recent history which has been horribly falsified. A blast of Neorealism is practically a moral obligation for our cinema at this time in its history." - Eugenia Voda, film critic, 1995. Romanian film critic Eugenia Voda has made this nearly prophetic statement only five years after the end of Romania's communist regime. Yet more than prophetic, her remark was an appeal to filmmakers, and their conscious as well as conscientious sense of truth. Although more than ten years have passed since, her words often resonate in close association with recent Romanian films and their honest representation of social reality, unique in the history of Romanian cinema. But to what extent is recent Romanian cinema a national cinema? Given the Western history of analysis of foreign cinematic productions, any current examination of non-Western films within a Western theoretical context must be carried out in relation to the prior theoretical developments, debates, and conclusions within the national cinema framework. Benedict Anderson's concept of the "imagined community' resides as foundation in the process of defining what is national (Anderson, 1983). When speaking of nationalist media, Anderson claims that while a nation is portrayed as a community, it is only an imagined one. Members of a nation do not all know each other, "yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion" (Anderson, 1983, p.6). From this perspective, cinema's popularity and ease of distribution has led to films becoming part of mass communications, and thus it can easily play a role in disseminating both national and nationalist ideals. persisted as a theoretical framework during the development and establishment of film studies as a Western academic discipline.

Abstract:This work is the second volume of a comprehensive ‘trilogy’ aimed at accounting for the theatrical discourse during the communist period. Covering more than a decade, a so-called ‘deceitful spring’ (1965-1977), comes after ‘the fluctuating thaw’ (1956-1964) tackled by volume one and is followed by ‘the blizzard’ (1978-1989) which ends just before the fall of the totalitarian regime in our country. The author’s endeavour is unprecedented, and the comprehensive research conducted on almost five hundred pages ranges from the education in the field to the party’s contribution and the magazines’, not to mention the theatres’ or the openness to the West. A sociological dimension is also envisaged, along with a rhetorical analysis that stirs interest in specialists, reviewers, theatregoers and others related to the world of theatrical performance to enlarge their horizons.

Abstract:Whenever the topic of revolution is at stake nowadays, Romanian people from different walks of life usually think of December 1989. The tragic events that led to the regime change have left a permanent mark on many people’s lives. Many contemporary writers and critics have written about it, but there is still a long way until the individual and the cultural trauma is healed. Since little has been published in English about the literary work of contemporary Romanian women writers, this paper aims to culturally translate the subject and to provide insights into their perspectives. From a theoretical point of view, it explores the perceptions of the concept of revolution seen either as a change of direction (a moment in time) or as a cyclical process (a flowing gyre). The selected corpus includes: a poetic novel, The Fox Was Ever the Hunter by Herta Müller; a diary, The Witnessing Wall by Florența Albu; a novel made of individual stories, One Sky Above Them by Ruxandra Cesereanu; a family chronicle, The Immigrant from Biggin Hill by Lăcrămioara Stoenescu; and a first-person retrospective novel, Fontana di Trevi by Gabriela Adameșteanu. Each of them tackles the idea of revolution in a distinct manner, which suggests the existence of a literary corpus by women writers that resonates in various ways with the original conflict and contributes significantly to its cultural memory.
AT THE BORDER: ILLEGAL REMOVAL OF HERITAGE ASSETS FROM THE SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF ROMANIA (1969-1989)

Abstract:The article analyzes the practices and methods of some of the thousands of people who tried to flee Romania with art objects, especially after the introduction of the Heritage Law (Law No. 63/1974), which considerably limited the rights of citizens to possess goods of heritage value, including precious metals. The Nicolae Ceaușescu regime was interested in acquiring gold, in order to pay the loan guarantees for the external debts that the Romanian state had at that time. Therefore, numerous individuals or groups attempted to leave Romania through the western border with heritage assets hidden in their luggage or other methods that often were discovered by the Securitate, which prompted extremely harsh measures. It is no coincidence that the border of communist Romania has been declared by many historians “the bloodiest border in postwar Europe.” However, many heritage objects have disappeared without a trace, and confiscations were generally made without an inventory of the property taken. Using provenance research, the study also demonstrates the active role of the Securitate, documenting scattered elements of the collections and – ideally – bringing them together. Finally, the article presents several cases relevant to the phenomenon of illegal crossing of the border with objects of patrimonial value, and how the baggage control was performed by the Securitate, while also examining why the citizens risked losing their freedom in order to be able to pass these goods outside the Communist state.

Abstract:This review considers Les intellectuels russes à la conquête de l’opinion publique française: Une histoire alternative de la littérature russe en France de Cantemir à Gorki, a collection edited by Alexandre Stroev, a specialist in Franco-Russian cultural connections. The publication sets an ambitious goal — to offer an alternative history of the perception of Russian literature in France over a period of almost two centuries. Nineteen articles mostly cover the translations and reception of works by a number of prominent representatives of Russian literature in France. At the same time, many of them explore the interest of Russian writers in French culture, their reading repertoire, circle of acquaintances, and travel diaries. The opinions expressed in most cases are adapted to modern theoretical research and are significant for both the history and theory of literature. The publication is dedicated to the memory of the untimely departed Alexander Yanushkevich, a remarkable researcher of 19th-century Russian literature and a participant of the collection.
Nae Ionescu and the Origins of Phenomenology in Romania

Abstract:The author attempts to describe and explain the original situation regarding the phenomenology, in Romanian philosophy in the first decades of twentieth century. Nae Ionescu introduced a method of philosophizing using some techniques belonging to phenomenology, especially to Husserl’s works (Logical Investigations, Ideas I and II, Cartesian Meditations etc.). In fact, he used some phenomenological concepts—intentionality, phenomenological method, intuition, etc.—in a ‘technical’ kind, in order to approach certain themes from the history of metaphysics: essence of the world and ego, God existence, knowledge constituting, thing and object, things and essences, subject and object of knowledge, relationships between contemplation, imagination, and reason, etc. In this paper, all such themes are interpreted from a perspective that allow to emphasize, on the one hand, their similarities with certain phenomenological concepts, and on the other hand, the phenomenological technics used by Ionescu in order to approach them. So, the intentionality, in Husserl’s concept, is applied to certain topics; also, the neutrality modification, epoché, eidetic intuition, non-actionality modification, etc. are also applied to different topics in many contexts of his works (in fact, his courses at University of Bucharest published by his students). Also, in the problem of relation between being and nothingness that is possible on the basis of the “passional act” Ionescu conceives this latter concept in analogy with Heidegger’s concept of state-of-mind (Befindlichkeit). All such connections are described and interpreted in such a way that the unity of Ionescu’s conception to be illustrated. At the end of article, along with some original contributions in phenomenology belonging to some Romanian thinkers from the same period (interwar), some direct Ionescu’s influences to certain Romanian philosophers are mentioned.
Looking West: Understanding Socio-Political Allegories and Art References in Contemporary Romanian Cinema

Abstract:Abstract The representation of other arts in cinema can be regarded as a different semiotic system revealing what is hidden in the narrative, as a site of cultural meanings inherent to the cinematic apparatus addressing a pensive spectator, or a discourse on cinema born in the space of intermediality. In the post-1989 films of Romanian director Lucian Pintilie, painterly and sculptural references, as well as miniatures become figurations of cultural identity inside allegories about a society torn between East and West. I argue that art references are liberating these films from provincialism by transforming them into a discourse lamenting over the loss of Western, Christian and local values, endangered or forgotten in the post-communist era. In the films under analysis – An Unforgettable Summer (1994), Too Late (1996) and Tertium Non Datur (2006) – images reminding of Byzantine iconography, together with direct references and remediations of sculptures by Romanian-born Constantin Brâncuşi, participate in historico-political allegories as expressions of social crisis and the transient nature of values. They also reveal the tension between an external and internal image of Romania, the aspiration of the “other Europe” to connect with the European cultural tradition, in a complex demonstration of a “self-othering” process. I will also argue that, contrary to the existing criticism, this generalizing, allegorical tendency can also be detected in some of the films of the generation of filmmakers representing the New Romanian Cinema, for example in Radu Jude’s Aferim! (2015).1

Abstract:Abstract Romanian New Wave cinema ( rnw ) has been recognised as a medium that addressed the way people felt about their historical trauma, a vernacular insertion nuancing declarations that Nicolae Ceausescu was a ‘megalomaniacal dictator’, and a means to attract and negotiate international interest in the country’s culture. rnw was a subversive and self-conscious commentary on the experience of transition from communism to capitalism as much as aesthetic entertainment. This article argues that rnw was critical of the idea of a transformative watershed – predominant in conceptions of 1989 across the Euro-Atlantic space – and qualifications of the teleological imaginary that encompassed it. Drawing on film theory, as well as the tension between collective and individual memory, the author argues that rnw was a self-conscious and creative effort at commemorating a past, contributing to a more democratic debate about the ways in which recent history bears upon the present.

Abstract:Résumé Écrit entre 1904 et 1912, ce roman de Romain Rolland présente la vision idéale d’un lien entre la France et l’Allemagne qui repose sur le dialogue et les échanges artistiques. Le lecteur voit la société française de l’époque à travers le regard d’un compositeur allemand forcé de quitter son pays et de s’exiler en France. Les tableaux successifs de l’Allemagne et de la France tendent à mettre l’accent sur les similarités entre les deux pays, au delà des différences politiques, sociales et culturelles. Le lien entre les deux pays qui se haïssent depuis 1870, est matérialisé par l’amitié entre le héros éponyme et un écrivain français, mais aussi par la figure du compositeur allemand elle-même : Jean-Christophe aspire à créer une symphonie qui célèbrerait la force de la civilisation européenne. En outre, grâce à son art et à sa conception d’un rapport harmonieux entre l’homme et le monde, il restaure à différentes échelles les relations entre les personnages, entre les nations et les différentes idéologies. Ce roman offre une vision intéressante de l’histoire européenne et insiste sur l’absurdité des conflits qui ont mené à la Première Guerre mondiale. Il s’agit dans cet article de voir comment le genre du Künstlerroman, ou roman d’artiste, permet de critiquer la notion d’identité nationale. Mots clés : Unité, Europe, Création artistique, Amitié entre les peuples Abstract Written between 1904 and 1912, Romain Rolland’s novel presents an ideal vision of a link between France and Germany which relies on dialogue and artistic exchanges. The reader sees French society through the eyes of a German composer who is forced to leave his country and go to France. The successive depictions of Germany and France at the beginning of the 19th century tend to shed light on the similarities between the two countries, beyond the political, social and cultural differences. This link between the two countries, adversaries since 1870, acquires material form in the friendship between the German composer and the French writer Olivier, but moreover in the artist Jean-Christophe Krafft himself, who not only aims at creating a symphony which celebrates the strength of European civilization, but also restores to different degrees the relations between the characters, the nations, and different ideologies through his art and his conception of a harmonious connection between man and the universe. This novel offers an interesting vision of European history and of the succession of eras, and insists on the absurdity of the conflicts which led to World War I. This article aims to show how the genre of Künstlerroman, the artist’s novel, is used to critique the notion of national identity. A Viennese Library in Exile: Otto Neurath and the Heritage of Central European Culture in the Anglo-Saxon World

Abstract:Otto Neurath experienced an adventurous as well as dangerous life. Already in his childhood, he was fascinated by his father’s huge library. He was especially impressed by images and illustrations since Ancient times and the French Encyclopédie, which inspired his lifelong dealing with picture language. This became manifest with the founding of his “Social and Economic Museum of Vienna” and the invention of his “Vienna Method of Pictorial Language,” later on renamed ISOTYPE. In the flourishing period of “Red Vienna” he acquired a lot of books in several languages covering his research fields and practical activities as a social reformer, teacher and museologist, philosopher, sociologist and historian of science. With his forced migrations from Vienna and The Hague, this most valuable collection of books and brochures was partly destroyed, dispersed, and aryanized, when Austro-Fascism came into power in Austria and Hitler’s troops invaded into the Netherlands. Luckily, Otto Neurath and some members of his family and collaborators could survive and save parts of this unique collection of books which mirrors the education and intellectual background of the polymath Neurath in Dutch and British exile. Here, he again bought and published books continuing his activities for the Vienna Circle of Logical Empiricism as well as the Unity of Science and the Isotype movements covering some 3000 books in 1945. Three typical case studies from the Neurath library are provided covering economics, philosophy, and literature: Neurath’s annotations in books of Friedrich A. von Hayek, Karl Popper, and the writer Stefan Zweig.

Abstract:V. N. Paschenyi’s attempt to present a historical essay on the fate of the Russian intelligentsia in 1783-1991 is analyzed. The author’s concept is considered. The conclusion is made about the discrepancy between the title and the content of the book, about his primitivization of the scientific approach to the history of Crimean studies. Numerous factual and conceptual errors of V. N. Paschenyi are named. It is proved that the book is a pile of facts from Russian history, sometimes unrelated to each other. The lack of reliance on sources on the history of Crimean studies, the author’s ignorance of the historiography of the issue led him to create an untenable version of the monograph on the intellectual history of the Crimea.
Collective Identities and Post-War Violence in Europe, 1944–48

Abstract:This book analyses the process of ‘reshaping’ liberated societies in post-1945 Europe. Post-war societies tried to solve three main questions immediately after the dark times of occupation: Who could be considered a patriot and a valuable member of the respective national community? How could relations between men and women be (re-)established? How could the respective society strengthen national cohesion? Violence in rather different forms appeared to be a powerful tool for such a complex reshaping of societies. The chapters are based on present primary research about specific cases and consider the different political, mental, and cultural developments in various nation-states between 1944 and 1948. Examples from Italy, France, Norway, Denmark, Greece, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary demonstrate a new comparative and fascinating picture of post-war Europe. This perspective overcomes the notorious East-West dividing line, without covering the manifold differences between individual European countries. Ota Konrád is Associate Professor of Modern History at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He has worked on topics dealing with the history of East-Central Europe in the twentieth century. Recently, he co-edited In the Shadow of the Great War: Physical Violence in East-Central Europe, 1917-1923 (2021). Boris Barth is Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. His publications include Europa nach dem Großen Krieg. Die Krise der Demokratie in der Zwischenkriegszeit 1918-1938 (2016) and Civilizing Missions in the Twentieth Century (edited with Rolf Hobson, 2020). Jaromír Mrňka is Researcher at the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes, and Junior Research Fellow at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. He has studied the social mechanisms of denunciation, collective violence, and conflict-related acts of sexual violence in the Czech Lands during the Second World War and its aftermath.
