Abstract:Rapid capacity fading of a graphite electrode was obtained with LiPF6/MFA electrolyte due to poor properties of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Vinylene carbonate (VC) was therefore applied to the MFA-based electrolyte as an SEI modification additive. The effects of VC concentration on the electrochemical properties of the graphite/Li half-cell were investigated at 25 and 60 °C. At 25 °C, the graphite electrode in MFA + 1% VC-based electrolyte showed good capacity retention of 300 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles, which was comparable with that in EC–DMC-based electrolyte; at 60 °C, the electrode in MFA + 3% VC-based electrolyte showed capacity retention of 240 mA h g−1 after 50 cycles, which was much better than that in EC–DMC-based electrolyte. Overabundant VC additives showed negative effects because of the formation of too-thick and/or too-dense SEI. DSC measurements were carried out to study the thermal behavior of MFA-based electrolyte coexisting with lithiated graphite. VC-containing MFA-based electrolyte still showed much better thermal stability than EC–DMC-based electrolyte. TG–MS analysis was performed on delithiated graphite cycled in MFA-based electrolyte containing different VC concentrations to analyze VC's effect on SEI formation. In summary, VC-added MFA-based electrolyte was a promising electrolyte for the development of safer Li-ion batteries, especially at elevated temperature.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that forms on electrodes largely defines the performances of lithium ion batteries (LIBs), such as cycling performance, shelf life, and safety. Additives in the electrolyte can modify the properties of the SEI and thus efficiently improve the performances of LIBs. However, the effects of additives on the mechanical properties, structure, and stability of the SEI have rarely been studied directly. In this paper, we report the influence of vinylene carbonate (VC) and lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) additives on the mechanical properties of SEI films formed on MnO electrodes using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and force spectroscopy. The results show that the SEI formed from VC additive is thick and soft and partially decomposes upon charging. LiBOB forms thin, stiff, and electrochemically stable SEI films, but the stiff SEI may not be favorable for adapting the volume change of the electrodes. The VC and LiBOB mixed additive combines the advantages of the two components and produces stable SEI with moderate thickness and stiffness. This work also demonstrates that the AFM-force spectroscopy method is effective in investigating the structure and mechanical properties of SEI films.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed on the surface of anode materials are of great importance for the high rate and long-life cycling stability. To address this issue, electrolyte additives have been widely used in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to modify the electrode-electrolyte interface property. Herein, vinylene carbonate (VC) has been adopted as an effective additive to form a solid and stable SEI on the Li3VO4 (LVO) anodes during cycling. We extensively investigated the fundamental characteristics of the constructed SEI layers and the related electrochemical reaction kinetics involved in LIBs environment. It was found that the introduction of VC in electrolytes could apparently enhance the rate capability and significantly improve the long-cycling performance of Li3VO4 anodes. The obtained LVO works in the electrolyte with the addition of VC exhibits a high reversible capacity of 810.4 mAh g-1, high rate performance of 521.2 mAh g-1 at 5.0 A g-1 and excellent cycling stability with 82.9% capacity retention for 2000 cycles at 10.0 A g-1. This work demonstrates that the formation of appropriate SEI on the surface of LVO is necessary for the improvement of electrochemical performance.

Abstract:As the research endeavors push the performance of widely used Li-ion battery to its theoretical limit, there are strong urges to develop next-generation energy storage devices. Li metal is a promising candidate battery anode material which can bring the energy density to a higher level. There are safety and cycling efficiency issues associated with the Li-metal battery (LMB), and the metal dendrite nucleation and lithium whisker formation are largely responsible for them. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) generated from the reactions between lithium metal and battery electrolyte components can regulate the lithium-ion diffusion and deposition which protects anode materials from undesired consumptions. According to the experimental evidence, the SEI from carbonate electrolytes may contain inorganic components including Li 2 O, Li 2 CO 3 , LiF, as well as organic structures such as polymers and oligomers with carbonate and carbonyl structures. However, the exact composition and ionic diffusion properties of SEI are challenging to be directly characterized via experimental techniques. In this work, we initiated the elucidation of the SEI composition by investigating plausible reaction pathways. The inorganic structures are mainly resulted from the degradation of electrolyte solvent and salt species upon contact with the anode material. Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation was implemented to track the interfacial reduction of ethylene carbonate (EC), vinylene carbonate (VC) and lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ). Bader charge analysis demonstrated that the LiPF 6 reduction requires consecutive uptake of outside electrons, no matter such reaction happens right on the metallic surface or in electrolyte phase. The final product of the LiPF 6 degradation was determined to be Li 3 P, and the reaction thermochemistry was computed based on density functional theory (DFT). The experimentally measured battery electrochemical performance enhancement of the VC additive has been reported while the chemical mechanism behind such phenomenon was less discussed. We modeled the degradation and polymerization reactions of EC and VC molecules in the LMB environment. VC has significantly smaller energy barrier than EC to generate the lithium-carbonyl complexes and the oligomer/polymer species which takes longer time scale to form. In addition, the solvated lithium cation was found to have significant contribution to the polymerization reaction thermodynamics. The most kinetically favored pathways and products for EC and VC polymerization were identified via DFT calculations. Multiscale simulation based on the computed thermodynamic information was able to provide a glimpse of the microscopic morphology inside the SEI.
Research Progress on Film-Forming Electrolyte Additives for Si-based Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are a key technology for energy storage and utilization. Energy density has become a key indicator in the development of modern batteries. Si-based anodes have received extensive research attention due to their high theoretical specific capacity. But the Si-based materials suffer from serious volume expansion problems. Functional additives are an indispensable part of the electrolyte system which has a significant improvement effect on battery performance, with the characteristics of “small dosage, quick effect”. A stable solid-state electrolyte interface（SEI） film is formed by film-forming additives to stabilize the electrode-electrolyte interface and improve the performance of Si-based anode batteries. This paper summarizes the research progress on film-forming additives for Si-based anodes in recent years. The film-forming additives are discussed in categories according to functional groups or elements, and the synergistic effect of multi-component film-forming additives is briefly described. Finally, the current research status of electrolyte additives for Si-based anodes is summarized and future research directions are prospected.

Abstract:1. Introduction Lithium-ion batteries (LIB) are used in a variety of applications, including portable devices such as smartphones. More recently, the development of rechargeable batteries is expected for applications such as next-generation electric mobility, requiring energy storage devices with higher energy density than conventional LIB, and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are attracting attention among these applications. To realize Li-S batteries with high energy density and safety, we have focused on mesoporous carbon-sulfur cathodes and carbonate-based electrolytes. In previous studies, we have reported that Li-S batteries using vinylene carbonate (VC) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as electrolyte solvents exhibit superior rate characteristics than using only VC solvent 1) . This study investigates the factors that contribute to the improved performance when using a FEC-VC mixed electrolyte. 2. Experimental method (1) We assembled the cells using 1.0 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide / VC (Only VC electrolyte) or 1.0 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide / FEC: VC (FEC-VC electrolyte). The cell was pre-cycled at 0.1C in the voltage range of 1 - 3 V, and then discharged at 10 C or 0.1 C and charged at 0.1 C for three cycles. After discharging and charging, each cell and electrode were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) or XPS. (2) Radical polymerization of VC with 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) was made by mixing VC and AIBN (VC radical polymer). Anionic polymerization of VC with lithium ethoxide (LiOEt) was also obtained by mixing VC and LiOEt (VC anionic polymer). These polymers were analyzed using XPS and MALDI-TOFMS. (3) The cathode materials after discharging and charging were stripped from the current collector. The powder was analyzed by APCI-TOFMS. (4) The cathode after 10 cycles was analyzed by STEM-EELS. 3. Results and discussion We conducted EIS on Li-S batteries charged and discharged with Only VC electrolyte or FEC-VC electrolyte at 10 C or 0.1 C, respectively. As a result, in the case of Only VC electrolyte, the interfacial resistance increased significantly after charge-discharge at 10 C when compared to that after charge-discharge at 0.1 C. On the other hand, when using FEC-VC electrolyte, the increase in interfacial resistance was suppressed. In addition, XPS investigation of the electrodes after discharging and charging showed that the SEI film thickness increased significantly after discharging and charging at 10 C when using Only VC electrolyte, whereas the increase in SEI film thickness was suppressed when using FEC-VC electrolyte. These suggest that when using FEC-VC electrolyte, a good SEI that suppresses electrolyte decomposition more is formed, and thin and low-resistance SEI is maintained even after rapid discharge, thereby improving rate performance. In addition, the XPS C1s spectra observed on the electrode film showed similar profiles to those of the VC radical polymer when using Only VC electrolyte, and to those of the VC anionic polymer when using FEC-VC electrolyte. Therefore, these polymers were used as models for the assumed SEI organic components when using respective electrolytes and were investigated by MALDI-TOFMS. As a result, the molecular weight of the monomer unit of the polymer was 250 for the VC radical polymer, while it was 60 for the VC anionic polymer. The results of the APCI-TOFMS investigation on the cathode materials after discharging and charging showed that the components with higher molecular weight decreased as using the electrolyte solvent with a higher mixing ratio of FEC to VC. Therefore, we considered that the mixing of FEC makes the SEI organic components less bulky and denser, which suppresses the continuous formation of SEI kinetically and reduces the interfacial resistance. We conducted further investigation about SEI that could suppress electrolyte degradation more when using FEC-VC electrolyte. STEM-EELS investigation of the cathode after 10 cycles of charge-discharge showed that the SEI layer is divided into two layers when using FEC-VC electrolyte, and the SEI inner layer is mainly composed of S, F and Li. The XPS results also revealed the presence of LiF and Li 2 S x (x=2-8) inside the SEI. Therefore, it is suggested that when using FEC-VC electrolyte, the formation of a layer that mainly composed of LiF and Li 2 S x (x=2-8) inside the SEI acts as a barrier between the electrode and the electrolyte, which can suppress excessive decomposition of the electrolyte. Abstract:Additives play critical roles on the performances of electrolytes. Vinyl tris(2-methoxyethoxy) silane (VTMS) was utilized as additive in the ethylene carbonate (EC)/ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) electrolyte. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine the morphological evolution of electrodes after cycling. The morphology of the SEI film for Si/C electrode was observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) techniques were employed to understand the effect of electrolytes containing VTMS on the formation of the SEI layer. Our experiments reveal that the capacity and cyclability of Si/C anode are improved due to formation of a stable SEI on the anode surface. These behaviors are confirmed by constant current charge–discharge and electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) study. In particular, 5 wt.% VTMS in EC:DEC (3:7 wt.%) shows the most optimal reversible capacity and best cycle stability. Such a performance can be attributed to the formation of a more flexible SEI containing Li2CO3, LiF, and organosilicone compounds, which can reduce further reduction of electrolyte.

Role of 1, 3-Propane Sultone and Vinylene Carbonate in Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI) Formation and Gas Generation

Abstract:The cycling performance, ex-situ surface analysis, and in-situ gas analysis of lithium ion batteries containing the widely used electrolyte additives VC and PS has been investigated. All of the electrolytes have good cycling performance at 25°C. However, the electrolytes containing additives have better discharge capacity retention and coulombic efficiency upon cycling at 55°C. Analysis of the differential capacity plots suggest that both VC and PS are reduced prior to the carbonates and alter the structure of the anode SEI. Ex-situ surface analysis confirms structural differences of the anode SEI. Electrodes cycled in the presence of PS contain lithium alkyl sulphonate (RSO3Li) on the surface of the anodes. The presence of the lithium alkyl sulfonate leads to higher lithium ion conductivity of the anode SEI. Electrodes cycled with added VC contain poly(VC) in the anode SEI. The presence of the poly(VC) leads to improved stability of the SEI. Anodes cycled with both VC and PS contain lithium alkyl sulphonate and poly(VC) which leads to an SEI with both high conductivity and high thermal stability. In-situ gas analysis shows that both additives, VC and PS, are able to reduce the ethylene evolution during SEI formation by nearly 70 %. The formation of poly(VC) for electrodes cycled in VC is accompanied by CO2 evolution. The presence of the lithium sulfonate for PS leads to a lower onset potential of ethylene evolution. For VC, the only gaseous byproduct during reduction is CO2, while PS shows no gaseous reduction products. The combination of both additives leads to a superposition of the described phenomena. The reduction of gas evolution during SEI formation would allow a faster and easier industrial formation procedure for Li-ion batteries.
Characterization of SEI layer for Surface Modified Cathode of Lithium Secondary Battery Depending on Electrolyte Additives

Abstract:Lithium ion battery with high energy density is expanding its application area to electric automobile and electricity storage field beyond existing portable electric devices. Such expansion of an application field is demanding higher characteristic and stable long life characteristic of an anode material, the natural graphite that became commercialized in lithium ion battery. This thesis produced cathode by using natural graphite anode material, analyzed creation of the cathode SEI film created due to initial reaction by using electrolyte additives, VC (vinylene carbonate), VEC (vinyl ethylene carbonate), and FEC (fluoroethylene carbonate), and considered correlation with the accompanying electrochemical transformation. This study compared and analyzed the SEI film variation of natural graphite cathode according to the electrolyte additive with SEI that is formed at the time of initial filling and cathode of life characteristic. At the time of initial filling, the profile showed changes due to the SEI formation, and SEI was formed in No-Additive in approximately 0.9 V through EVS, but for VC, VEC, and FEC, the formation reaction was created above 1 V. In lifespan characteristic evaluation, the initial efficiency was highest in No-Additive and showed high contents percentage, but when cycle was progressed, the capacity maintenance rate decreased more than VC and FEC as the capacity and efficiency at the time of filling decreased, and VEC showed lowest performance in efficiency and capacity maintenance rate. Changes of SEI could not be verified through SEM, but it was identified that as the cycle of SEI ingredients was progressed through FT-IR, ingredients of Alkyl carbonate () affiliation of the was maintained more solidly and the resistance increased as cycle was progressed through EIS, and specially, it was identified that the resistance due to No-Additive and SEI of VEC became very significant. Continuous loss of additives was verified through GC-MS, and the loss of additives from partial decomposition and remodeling of SEI formed the non-uniform surface of SEI and is judged to be the increase of resistance.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formed at the interface in lithium-ion batteries plays an important role in isolating electrons and permeating ions during charging/discharging processes. Therefore, the formation of a good interface is crucial for better battery performance. In this study, additives based on adiponitrile (ADN) and trimethyl borate (TMB) were employed to broaden the electrochemical window and form a good SEI layer. Electrochemical Atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) was used for in situ studies of film-formation mechanisms in high-voltage electrolytes on high-temperature pyrolytic graphite (HOPG), as well as Li- and Mn-rich (LMR) materials. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) combined with electrochemical methods revealed a synergistic reaction between the two additives to form a more stable interfacial film during charging/discharging processes to yield assembled batteries with improved cycle performance, its capacity increased from below 100 mAh/g to 200 mAh/g after 50 cycles. In sum, these findings would have great significance for the development of high voltage lithium-ion batteries with enhanced performance.

Abstract:In this work vinylethylene carbonate is introduced as an effective electrolyte additive to improve the performance of high‐voltage NMC622|graphite lithium‐ion batteries. The cross‐talk mechanism of VEC reductive decomposition leads to the formation of an effective CEI captured by operando SHINERS. The formation of effective interphases is crucial to enable high‐performance lithium‐ion batteries. This can be facilitated by the introduction of electrolyte additives, ensuring improved stability and transport properties. The identification of proper additives requires a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of interfacial reactions governing interphase formation. This study presents a detailed investigation of widely known and less conventional interphase‐forming additives in high‐voltage LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2, NMC622||artificial graphite cells. The electrochemical characterization shows that cells containing vinylethylene carbonate (VEC) significantly outperform all other investigated electrolyte formulations. Surprisingly, gas chromatography‐mass spectroscopy measurements of the electrolyte composition after cycling indicate the formation of an ineffective solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) in the presence of VEC. A thorough analysis of the interfacial composition via operando shell‐isolated nanoparticle‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) and surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy elucidates rather the formation of an effective cathode‐electrolyte interphase (CEI). This phenomenon results from the reductive reaction of VEC on the anode, followed by the product transfer and electro‐polymerization of reaction products on the cathode. Additionally, focused ion beam secondary ion mass spectrometry (FIB‐SIMS) with a time of flight (ToF)‐detector is used to analyze the elemental spatial distribution of Li‐species and Mn in the respective SEIs.

Abstract:Introduction In last decade, several lithium ion batteries formation methods have been investigated. Such as two steps current charge formation [1], pulse formation [2] or ageing process [3]. However, these researches are all focus on the unity electrochemical or chemical properties improvement. In addition, carbonate provide high dielectric constant and well low temperature performance, but due to deintercalation of solvent molecules along with lithium ion into the graphite and subsequent exfoliation, it cannot form not only better SEI and produce carbon dioxide, and wet ability is also become an object of public denunciation. Therefore, the commercial market, especially LEV and HEV, are both focus on PC/EC based system and blend different kinds of low dielectric constant carbonate, such as DMC, EMC, DEC to improve viscosity and wet ability. However, the correlation among the electrolyte, formation process and temperature are deficient to discuss in recent papers. In this research, we try to use different kinds of electrolyte and formatted at two temperatures to find the variations.

Abstract:Two kinds of charge transfer reactions are critical for the performance and life of lithium battery: the desired ion transfer reaction occurring during each charge/discharge cycle, , and the undesired electron transfer reactions leading to the parasitic chemical decomposition of the electrolyte and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation/growth. The heterogeneous multi-component nature of SEI dominates its ionic and electronic transport properties and controls these two charge transfer reactions. Density Functional Theory (DFT)-informed multiscale modeling has been providing valuable insights under the scarcity of quantitative experiments. For example, the LiF/Li 2 CO 3 interface was demonstrated to increase the ionic conductivity of mixed SEI nanocomposite by forming an ionic space charge region near the interface and promoting more Li-ion interstitials in Li 2 CO 3 , although LiF itself has low Li-ion conducting carriers and conductivity. To form a LiF-rich SEI layer, the electrolyte compositions need to be designed. Since the SEI formation occurs on the charged surface, the electric double layer (EDL) structure near the charged surfaces needs to be incorporated into the modeling. Here interactive classical molecular dynamics (MD), DFT, and data statistical analysis were combined to illustrate the effect of EDL on SEI formation in two essential electrolytes, the carbonate-based electrolyte for Li-ion batteries and the ether-based electrolyte for batteries with Li-metal anodes. It was found the effectiveness of adding fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) to form the beneficial F-containing SEI component (e.g., LiF) varies with the electrolyte and temperature, because of the interplay of ion-solvent interactions with the surface charge. These integrated modeling provided quantitative guidance for electrolyte/SEI/Li-metal interface design.

Abstract:The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film plays a significant role in the capacity and storage performance of lithium primary batteries. The electrolyte additives are essential in controlling the morphology, composition and structure of the SEI film. Herein, fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) is chosen as the additive, its effects on the lithium primary battery performance are investigated, and the relevant formation mechanism of SEI film is analyzed. By comparing the electrochemical performance of the Li/AlF3 primary batteries and the microstructure of the Li anode surface under different conditions, the evolution model of the SEI film is established. The FEC additive can decrease the electrolyte decomposition and protect the lithium metal anode effectively. When an optimal 5% FEC is added, the discharge specific capacity of the Li/AlF3 primary battery is 212.8 mAh g−1, and the discharge specific capacities are respectively 205.7 and 122.3 mAh g−1 after storage for 7 days at room temperature and 55 °C. Compared to primary electrolytes, the charge transfer resistance of the Li/AlF3 batteries with FEC additive decreases, indicating that FEC is a promising electrolyte additive to effectively improve the SEI film, increase discharge-specific capacities and promote charge transfer of the lithium primary batteries.

Abstract:Intrinsic solvation property of electrolyte additive governs the effectiveness of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forming ability, because the migration of Li‐ion toward negative electrode surface accompanies with additive transport during formation process of lithium‐ion batteries. The thick SEI is deposited with increasing concentration of Li‐ion binding additive, and thus improvement of cycleability can be further performed with electrolyte formulation. Substantial efforts are dedicated to optimizing the additive dosage in the electrolyte and studying its effect on solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation in Li‐ion batteries (LIBs). This study reveals that the decomposition characteristics of the additive based on its lithium‐ion solvation nature significantly contribute to controlling SEI formation. During SEI formation, the strong lithium‐ion solvating additive spontaneously migrates to the negative electrode due to negative charge accumulation on the surface, and SEI reinforcement is feasible by increasing the additive dosage. In contrast, population‐based SEI formation occurs with a weaker solvating additive, so dosage‐dependent modification of the SEI is not effective. These findings demonstrate that compositional electrolyte engineering based on the solvation properties of the additive can be more effective than empirical and experimental studies based on trial and error.

Abstract:An electrolyte based on the new salt, lithium 4,5-dicyano-2-(trifluoromethyl)imidazolide (LiTDI), is evaluated in combination with nano-Si composite electrodes for potential use in Li-ion batteries. The additives fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) and vinylene carbonate (VC) are also added to the electrolyte to enable an efficient SEI formation. By employing hard X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES), the SEI formation and the development of the active material is probed during the first 100 cycles. With this electrolyte formulation, the Si electrode can cycle at 1200 mAh g(-1) for more than 100 cycles at a coulombic efficiency of 99%. With extended cycling, a decrease in Si particle size is observed as well as an increase in silicon oxide amount. As opposed to LiPF6 based electrolytes, this electrolyte or its decomposition products has no side reactions with the active Si material. The present results further acknowledge the positive effects of SEI forming additives. It is suggested that polycarbonates and a high LiF content are favorable components in the SEI over other kinds of carbonates formed by ethylene carbonate (EC) and dimethyl carbonate (DMC) decomposition. This work thus confirms that LiTDI in combination with the investigated additives is a promising salt for Si electrodes in future Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:A safe electrolyte based on an ionic liquid-organic composite with binary additives was prepared. The stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) forms on the surface of a carbon anode by addition of vinylene carbonate (VC) and lithium bis(oxalato) borate (LiBOB) binary additives in ionic liquid-organic electrolyte mixture. The stable SEI effectively prevents the co-intercalation of PP13(+) cations, thus leading to an obvious improvement in the performance of the cell.

Abstract:The solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI), the passivation layer formed on anode particles during the initial cycles, affects the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in terms of capacity, power output, and cycle life. SEI features are dependent on the electrolyte content, as this complex layer originates from electrolyte decomposition products. Despite a variety of studies devoted to understanding SEI formation, the complexity of this process has caused uncertainty in its chemistry. In order to clarify the role of the substituted functional groups of the SEI-forming compounds in their efficiency and the features of the resulting interphase, the performance of six different carbonyl-based molecules has been investigated by computational modeling and electrochemical experiments with a comparative approach. The performance of the electrolytes and stability of the generated SEI are evaluated in both half-cell and full-cell configurations. Added to the room-temperature studies, the cyclability of the NMC/graphite cells is assessed at elevated temperatures as an intensified aging condition. The results show that structural adjustments within the SEI-forming molecule can ameliorate the cyclability of the electrolyte, leading to a higher capacity retention of the LIB cell, where cinnamoyl chloride is introduced as a novel and more sustainable SEI forming agent with the potential of improving the LIB capacity retention.
