Longitudinal Variations of the Occurrence Probability of the Ionospheric F1 Layer Peak at Middle and High Latitudes

Abstract:This study focuses on the longitudinal variations of the ionospheric F1 layer occurrence probabilities from middle to high latitudes (40–70°) in the daytime in summer under low solar activity conditions. The ionospheric electron density profiles retrieved from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate observations are used. The patterns of the F1 layer occurrence probabilities are constructed with latitude, longitude, and local time in both hemispheres. The results illustrate a new feature that the occurrence probability of the F1 layer changes with longitude in both hemispheres. Specifically, the F1 layer generally occurs more frequently in the longitudes within ~160°E–90°W at 40–70°N and within 0–150°E at 40–70°S. The peak occurrence probabilities occur around 150°W (>0.6) and 60°E (>0.8) in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, respectively. The valleys with values near 0 are located at about 120°W at 40–70°S. A minor peak (~0.4) also occurs within ~0–90°E at 40–70°N. These locations depend on latitude and local time. A simulation using the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model （(TIEGCM）) reproduces the observed longitudinal pattern well. Further TIEGCM simulations show that the higher F1 layer occurrence probabilities can be largely explained by longitudinal variations of the O/N2 ratios and also that the dynamic processes, such as the neutral winds above the F1 layer, have additional contributions. These results reveal that the low O/N2 ratios deplete the ionospheric electron density above the F1 layer at middle and high latitudes and thus makes the F1 layer stand out.

Abstract:Ionospheric nighttime enhancements are manifested in an increase of the electron density at nighttime. This paper studies the latitudinal variation of the specific local time of postmidnight enhancement peaks using ionosondes distributed at low latitudes. To obtain the parameters of the ionosphere, we manually extracted ionograms recorded by ionosondes. Cases show that there are significant latitudinal variations in the observed local time of the postmidnight enhancement peaks. Results show that the lower the geomagnetic latitude, the earlier the enhancement peak occurred in the geomagnetic northern hemisphere. Additionally, the enhancement peaks occurred earlier in the geomagnetic southern hemisphere than that in the geomagnetic northern hemisphere for these present cases. We suggest that the combined effect of the geomagnetic inclination and transequatorial meridional wind might be the main driving force for latitudinal variation of the local time of the occurrence.

Abstract:The upward looking ionospheric total electron content (TEC) from the MetOp‐A and TSX satellites during 2008–2015 has been used to systematically study the longitudinal variations of the topside ionosphere and plasmasphere. The results of this study are summarized as follows: (1) There are significant longitudinal variations in the topside ionosphere and plasmasphere at low latitudes. The TEC maximum during the June solstice over the Western and Central Pacific Ocean corresponds to a TEC minimum at the same location during the December solstice, but the opposite behavior occurs over South America and the Atlantic Ocean. (2) During the solstices, the relative longitudinal variations in the geomagnetic equatorial region do not have a strong dependence on local time and solar activity. (3) The TEC in the winter hemisphere decreases with increasing solar activity, especially at higher altitudes and at night. The topside TEC depletion with solar activity depends on longitude. (4) The solstice‐like longitudinal pattern lasts much longer than the equinox‐like patterns, with the June solstice pattern lasting the longest. Furthermore, the equinox‐like longitudinal patterns occur in March when expected, whereas they extend from the autumnal equinox until the end of October. (5) The longitudinal variations of upward looking TEC are different from the corresponding longitudinal variations of electron densities around the F2 peak and orbital altitudes. This indicates that the topside ionosphere structure is strongly influenced by the physical processes in the topside region, rather than being a pure reflection of the ionospheric F2 peak structure.

Abstract:Based on satellite observation data, using dynamics equation, the ionospheric O+ ion’s distribution in the synchronous altitude region for different geomagnetic activity indexK p is studied by theoretical modeling and numerical analyzing, and semi-empirical models for the O+ ion’s density and flux versus longitude in the synchronous altitude region for differentK p are given. The main results show that in the synchronous altitude region: (i) The O+ ion’s density and flux in day-side are larger than those in nightside. (ii) With longitude changing, the higher the geomagnetic activity indexK p is, the higher the O+ ion’s density and flux, and their variation amplitude will be. The O+ ion’s density and flux whenK p ≥ 6 will be about ten times as great as that whenK p = 0. (iii) WhenK p = 0 orK p ≥ 6, the O+ ion’s density reaches maximum at longitudes 120° and 240° respectively, and minimum in the magnetotail. WhenK p = 3−5, the O+ ion’s density gets to maximum at longitude 0°, and minimum in the magnetotail. However, the O+ ion’s flux reaches maximum at longitude 120° and 240° respectively, and minimum in the magnetotail for anyK p value.
Ozone Variations over the Tibetan and Iranian Plateaus and Their Relationship with the South Asia High

Abstract:The TOMS data shows that in summer an ozone low center also exists over the Iranian Plateau, so the vertical distributions and variation characters of ozone over the Iranian Plateau are discussed in this paper along with the analysis of those over the Tibetan Plateau by using the TOMS, HALOE and SAGE Ⅱ data. The results show that the largest ozone deficit is found in 12~22 km a.s.l.(120~30 hPa) over the Tibetan Plateau and the Iranian Plateau in summer compared with the vertical ozone distribution in the non-mountainous areas at the same latitudes, and that the ozone deficit over the Iranian Plateau is larger than that over the Tibetan Plateau in this layer. Based on the NCEP/NCAR monthly mean reanalysis data, the variations of geopotential height and potential temperature over South Asia and their relationships with ozone variations are analyzed in this paper. The results show that there is a close relationship between the ozone variations over the plateaus and the South Asia High(SAH). When the position of the SAH center inclines to Iran, the total ozone amount over the Iranian Plateau is less than the annual mean value. By analyzing the variations of the equipotential temperature surfaces over the plateaus, the effect of the SAH on the ozone low center is discussed.

Abstract:With a theoretical model which yields ionospheric electric fields, we study the yearly variation of ionospheric electric fields at middle and low latitudes under the condition of low solar and quiet geomagnetic activities. The results show the following characteristics. When the ionospheric electric fields are calculated individually in the Northern (or Southern) Hemisphere without including the influence of the other hemisphere (uncoupled), the electric field in the Northern (or Southern) Hemisphere varies in an obvious annual pattern; when the electric field is calculated simultaneously in both hemispheres including the influence of the other hemispheres (coupled), the electric field varies in a predominantly semiannual pattern. Moreover, quite good consistency was found between the behaviors of semiannual variation calculated by our theoretical electric field model and an empirical model of Richmond et al. (1980).

A Simulation Study on the Impact of Altitudinal Dependent Vertical Plasma Drift on the Equatorial Ionosphere in the Evening

Abstract:We carry out a simulation study on the impact of altitudinal dependent plasma drift on the equatorial ionosphere in the evening, under geomagnetically quiet conditions. Our study used the vertical plasma drift velocity data measured by an incoherent scatter radar at Jicamarca (11.95°S, 76.87°W). The data covered the local sunset period on 15 and 16 November 2004. The plasma drift had significant altitudinal variations in the vertical component, which is perpendicular to the magnetic field. We employed SAMI2 (SAMI2 is another model of the ionosphere) to evaluate the effect of the altitude‐dependent ion drift on the equatorial ionosphere. Three types of plasma drift velocity inputs were used in our simulations. The first input is calculated from an empirical model, the second is a height‐averaged drift obtained from the observed drift velocity, and the third one corresponds to the observed altitudinal dependent drift data. A strong equatorial ionization anomaly occurred in the results of all numerical experiments. Additional layers ( F 3 layers) in electron densities over the equatorial F region and “arch” latitudinal structures extending to lower middle latitudes were seen in the simulations driven by the observed altitudinal dependent drift. We further show that neutral winds do not have a significant effect on the simulated F 3 layers. The results of our numerical experiments suggest that the simulated additional ionospheric layers and arch structures are associated with the altitudinal gradients in the vertical plasma drift velocity.

Abstract:The ratio of number density of atomic oxygen (O) to that of molecular nitrogen (N-2) in the thermosphere (O/N-2) on the constant pressure surface, which has complex temporal and spatial characteristics, is widely regarded as an important parameter connecting the terrestrial thermosphere and daytime ionosphere. Previous studies demonstrated that the thermospheric O/N-2 increases with increasing solar activity, and the changes in O/N-2 with solar activity show significant difference between winter and summer hemispheres. However, the root causes, which are responsible for the solar activity variation of O/N-2, are not fully understood. In this study, the contributions of various physical and chemical processes on the response of O/N-2 to the solar radiation change were quantitatively investigated through a series of controlled simulations from the Thermosphere Ionosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model. The simulation results suggested that the chemical processes lead to the increase of thermospheric O/N-2 over the globe with increasing solar activity. The increase of O/N-2 with solar activity is dominated by the enrichment of O abundance and the loss of N-2 abundance in the lower and upper thermosphere, respectively. Moreover, the simulation results suggested that the stronger hemispheric asymmetry is attributed to the stronger thermospheric circulation, which changes the vertical advection of O/N-2 through both direct and indirect effects.

Abstract:Ground-based GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) reference stations lack the capacity to provide data for ocean regions with sufficient spatial-temporal resolution, limiting the detailed study of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA). Thus, this study collected kinematic multi-GNSS data on the ionospheric Total Electron Content (TEC) during two research cruises across the equator in the Western Pacific Ocean in 2014 (31 October–8 November) and 2015 (29 March–6 April). The purpose of the study was to use sufficient spatial–temporal resolution data to conduct a detailed analysis of the diurnal variation of the equatorial ionization anomaly in different seasons. The two-year data collected were used to draw the following conclusions. During the test in 2014, the EIA phenomenon in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres was relatively obvious. The maximum values occurred at local time (LT) 15:00 (~136TECu) and LT22:00 (~107TECu) in the Northern Hemisphere and at LT14:00 (100TECu) and LT22:00 (80TECu) in the Southern Hemisphere. During the test in 2015, the EIA in the Southern Hemisphere reached its maximum level at LT14:00 (~115TECu) and LT20:00 (~85TECu). However, the EIA phenomenon in the Northern Hemisphere was weakened, and a maximum value occurred only at LT 15:00 (~85TECu). The intensity contrast was reversed. The EIA phenomenon manifests a strong hemisphere asymmetry in this region.
Topside Measurements at Jicamarca During the 2019-2020 Deep Solar Minimum

Abstract:We present measurements of the equatorial topside ionosphere above Jicamarca made during extremely low solar flux conditions during the deep solar minimum of 2019-2020. Measurements were made in October, 2019, February, 2020, and September, 2020. The main features observed are a large and extended decrease in noontime temperatures unlike that seen in studies at moderate solar flux levels, predawn ionospheric heating as early as 0300 LT, large day-to-day variability in the O+/H+ transition height, and negligible helium ion concentration at all altitudes. Data from the Ion Velocity Meter (IVM) instrument onboard the Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) and the Topside Ionospheric Plasma Monitor (SSIES) onboard the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites are used to assess agreement with ISR data and assist with the analysis of the predawn heating phenomena. We also analyze the data in light of the SAMI2-PE model which shows less agreement with the data than at higher solar flux. The main areas of discrepancy with the data are outlined, such as the absence of significant predawn heating, less pronounced decreases in noontime temperatures, and much higher O+ fractions at high altitudes, particularly in September. Finally, a sensitivity analysis of the model to various forcing agents such as neutral winds, plasma drifts, solar flux, and heat flow is performed. A discussion is presented on bridging the discrepancies in future model runs. Novel techniques of clutter removal and noise power bias correction are introduced and described in the appendices.
