Abstract:Solar activity during 2007--2009 was very low, causing anomalously low thermospheric density. A comparison of solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance in the He II spectral band (26 to 34 nm) from the Solar Extreme ultraviolet Monitor (SEM), one of instruments on the Charge Element and Isotope Analysis System (CELIAS) onboard of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) for the two latest solar minima showed a decrease of the absolute irradiance of about 15 +- 6 % during the solar minimum between Cycles 23 and 24 compared with the Cycles 22/23 minimum when a yearly running mean filter was used. We found that some local, shorter-term minima including those with the same absolute EUV flux in the SEM spectral band show a larger concentration of spatial power in the global network structure from the 30.4 nm SOHO Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) images for the local minimum of 1996 compared with the minima of 2008--2011. We interpret this larger concentration of spatial power in the transition region's global network structure as a larger number of larger area features on the solar disk. Such changes in the global network structure during solar minima may characterize, in part, the geo-effectiveness of the solar He II EUV irradiance in addition to the estimations based on its absolute levels.

Abstract:The study of electrical currents in the topside ionosphere is of great importance, as it may allow a better understanding of the processes involved in the Sun–Earth interaction and magnetosphere–ionosphere–thermosphere coupling, two crucial aspects debated by the Space Weather scientific community. In this context, investigating the electrical conductivity parallel to the geomagnetic field in the topside ionosphere is of primary importance because: (1) it provides information on the capability of the ionosphere to conduct currents; (2) it relates current density and electric field through Ohm's law; (3) it can help to quantify the dissipation of currents; (4) it is generally modeled and not locally measured by in situ missions. In this work, we used in situ measurements of electron density and temperature recorded between 2019 and 2021 by the China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite (CSES-01) flying with an orbital inclination of 97.4∘ and at an altitude of about 500 km to compute the parallel electrical conductivity in the topside ionosphere at low and middle latitudes at the two fixed local times (LT) characterizing the CSES-01 mission: around 02 and 14 LT. The results, which are discussed in light of previous literature, highlight the dependence of conductivity on latitude and longitude and are compared with those obtained using values both measured by the Swarm B satellite (flying at a similar altitude) and modeled by the International Reference Ionosphere in the same time period. In particular, we found a diurnal variation in parallel electrical conductivity, with a slight hemispheric asymmetry. Daytime features are compatible with Sq and equatorial electrojet current systems, containing "anomalous" low values of conductivity in correspondence with the South Atlantic region that could be physical in nature.

Abstract:The topside ionosphere extends from the F2-layer peak, where the electron density reaches its absolute maximum in the ionosphere, to the overlying plasmasphere and magnetosphere. In the topside ionosphere, the electron density decreases with height with a vertical variation rate strongly dependent on height itself. The last version of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model, i.e., IRI-2020, describes this complex behavior through four topside options based on different sub-models (i.e., options) developed from the 1970s to the present. All these options have in common the F2-layer peak as an anchor point, while they differ in their topside electron density profile and/or plasma effective scale height formulations. In this work, we perform a validation of the accuracy of the four IRI-2020 topside options based on the comparison against in-situ electron density observations by Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON), and Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F15 low-Earth-orbit satellites. Datasets used in this study encompass observations recorded from 1999 to 2022, covering different diurnal, seasonal, and solar activity conditions, on a global basis and for the height range 400−850 km above the ground. The nearly two solar cycles dataset facilitated the evaluation of IRI-2020 topside options ability to reproduce the spatial and time variations of the topside ionosphere for different solar activity conditions. The weaknesses and strengths of each IRI-2020 topside option are highlighted and discussed, and suggestions on how to improve the modeling of the challenging topside ionosphere region within the IRI model are provided for future reference.

Multi-Instrumental Observations Of The Quasi-16-Day Variations From The Lower Thermosphere To The Topside Ionosphere In The Low-Latitude Eastern Asian Sector During The 2017 Sudden Stratospheric Warming Event

Abstract:Variations of the low-latitude ionosphere in the eastern Asian sector during the 2017 sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) were studied with multi-instrumental observations that correspond to different altitudes. Specifically, the variations of the topside ionosphere as high as over 830 km were investigated with data from the Swarm B satellite (similar to 500 km), the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F15 satellite (similar to 830 km), and the Meteorological Operational satellite-A (similar to 830 km). The main results are as follows. (1) Simultaneous variations were detected in the ionospheric parameters from the E region to the topside ionosphere around the first peak warming of the 2017 SSW. (2) These variations exhibited similar quasi-16-day (Q16D; similar to 14.5-day) periods, and these periods were most significant just before the first peak warming. (3) These simultaneous Q16D variations were not due to the solar extreme ultraviolet irradiance or geomagnetic activities but were probably driven from below, by planetary waves or semidiurnal lunar tides that enhanced during the SSW. (4) The Q16D variation of the topside ionospheric electron density at similar to 830 km was probably driven not only by the upward mapping electric field modulated in the E region dynamo but also by the electric field modulated in the F region dynamo.
Validation of COSMIC-2-Derived Ionospheric Peak Parameters Using Measurements of Ionosondes

Abstract:Although numerous validations for the ionospheric peak parameters values (IPPVs) obtained from the Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) have been conducted using ionosonde measurements as a reference, comprehensive evaluations of the quality of the COSMIC-2 data are still undesirable, especially under geomagnetic storm conditions. In this study, the IPPVs measured by ionosondes (Ramey, Boa Vista, Sao Luis, Jicamarca, Cachoeira Paulista, and Santa Maria) during the period 1 October 2019 to 31 August 2021, are used to evaluate the quality of COSMIC-2 data over low-latitude regions of the Americas. The results show that the NmF2 (hmF2) from COSMIC-2 agrees well with the ionosonde measurements, and the correlation coefficients for the two sets of data at the above six stations are 0.93 (0.84), 0.91 (0.85), 0.91 (0.88), 0.88 (0.79), 0.96 (0.83), and 0.96 (0.87), respectively. The data quality of COSMIC-2 derived NmF2 is largely dependent on geomagnetic latitude. It was also found that NmF2 derived from COSMIC-2 tends to be underestimated over the stations in Boa Vista and Cachoeira Paulista, which are close to the crests of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA), whilst that of the other stations is slightly overestimated. A comparison between COSMIC-measured and ionosonde-derived hmF2 indicates that the former is systematically higher than the latter. In addition, the differences in the two NmF2 datasets derived from COSMIC-2 and ionosonde measurements at night are generally smaller than those of daytime, when the EIA is well developed, and vice versa for hmF2, whose RMSE is slightly smaller during daytime (with the exception of Ramey). Furthermore, NmF2 obtained from COSMIC-2 is shown to perform best in summer at Ramey, Boa Vista, Sao Luis, and Santa Maria, best in winter at Jicamarca and Cachoeira Paulista. Finally, the COSMIC-2 electron densities capture the ionospheric dynamic enhancements under a moderate geomagnetic storm condition very well.

Abstract:We have studied the ionospheric upwelling with a magnitude of above 10 13 m −2 s −1 using the data during the European Incoherent Scatter Scientific Association (EISCAT) Svalbard Radar International Polar Year (IPY-ESR) 2007 campaign, which coincides with the solar minimum. The noise level in low-, medium- and high-flux upflows is investigated. We found that the noise level in high-flux upflow is about 93 %, while in the low and medium categories it is 62 % and 80 %, respectively. This shows that robust and stringent filtering techniques must be ensured when analysing incoherent data in order not to introduce bias to the result. Analysis reveals that the frequency of the low-flux upflow events is about 8 and 73 times the medium- and high-flux upflow events, respectively. Seasonal observation shows that the noise level in the upflow classes is predominantly high during winter. The noise is minimal in summer, with a notable result indicating occurrence of actual data above noise in the low-flux class. Moreover, the percentage occurrence of the noise level in the data increases with increasing flux strength, irrespective of the season. Further analysis reveals that the noise level in the local time variation peaked around 17:00–18:00 LT (local time) and minimum around 12:00 LT.

A high spatial and spectral resolution study of Jupiter's mid-infrared auroral emissions and their response to a solar wind compression

Abstract:We present mid-infrared spectroscopy of Jupiter's mid-to-high latitudes using Gemini-North/TEXES (Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph) on March 17-19, 2017. These observations capture Jupiter's hydrocarbon auroral emissions before, during and after the arrival of a solar wind compression on March 18th, which highlights the coupling between the polar stratosphere and external space environment. In comparing observations on March 17th and 19th, we observe a brightening of the CH$_4$, C$_2$H$_2$ and C$_2$H$_4$ emissions in regions spatially coincident with the northern, duskside main auroral emission (henceforth, MAE). In inverting the spectra to derive atmospheric information, we determine that the duskside brightening results from an upper stratospheric (p < 0.1 mbar/z > 200 km) heating (e.g. $\Delta T$ = 9.1 $\pm$ 2.1 K at 9 $\mu$bar at 67.5$^\circ$N, 162.5$^\circ$W) with negligible heating at deeper pressures. Our interpretation is that the arrival of the solar wind enhancement drove magnetospheric dynamics through compression and/or viscous interactions on the flank. These dynamics accelerated currents and/or generated higher Poynting fluxes, which ultimately warmed the atmosphere through Joule heating and ion-neutral collisions. Poleward of the southern MAE, temperature retrievals demonstrate that auroral-related heating penetrates as deep as the 10-mbar level, in contrast to poleward of the northern MAE, where heating is only observed as deep as $\sim$3 mbar. We suggest this results from the south having higher Pedersen conductivities, and therefore stronger currents and acceleration of the neutrals, as well as the poleward heating overlapping with the apex of Jupiter's circulation thereby inhibiting efficient horizontal mixing/advection.

Longitudinal features of day- and night-time ionospheric annual variations during the solar cycles 23 and 24

Abstract:We present a study concerning the ionospheric annual variations (IAV) using the global ionospheric maps (GIMs). In this regard, the corresponding regional electron content (REC) is computed in four longitudinal sectors, namely Asia, Africa, America and Pacific. The features of day- and night-time IAV are investigated using (i) band-pass filters and (ii) summer to winter (SW) ratio of REC. The results indicate that IAV are stronger in the southern hemisphere as compared to its northern counterpart. The asymmetry in the amplitude of IAV is maximum for the Pacific region, followed by America, Africa and Asia. The IAV in southern hemisphere are regular ionospheric variations (RIAV) with positive and negative peaks occurring in the months of December and June, respectively. The northern hemisphere and latitudinal regions exhibit a day-time anomalous ionospheric annual variations (AIAV), during the peak years of the considered solar cycles, in which maxima (minima) occurs in local winter (summer). In this regard, the phase of AIAV is found to vary with solar activity. The night-time IAV show anomalous behavior in the northern hemisphere during the solar minimum. The SW ratio of day-time REC is less than unity at northern hemisphere during the peak of a solar cycle. However, the said ratio is always greater than one in southern counterpart. The fitting curve for day-time SW ratio has a strong negative slope in the northern hemisphere. The threshold of SSN (sunspot number) indicating the presence of the daytime winter anomaly at low- latitudes is found to be 25, 80, and 115 in the Africa, Asia-Pacific, and American regions, respectively. Additionally, this anomaly becomes observable in the mid-latitudes region of America and the Pacific region for SSN values exceeding 100 and 150, respectively. On the other hand, the correlation and fitting analysis demonstrate that night-time SW ratio enhances with increase in the solar activity. This result predicts that night- time winter anomaly can only be present during the periods of minimum and low solar activity. However, our analysis revealed that the night-time winter anomaly is observable only in the African low-latitude region for SSN < 85.

Abstract:This study focuses on the open question of the electron temperature (Te) variation with solar activity in the topside ionosphere at mid- and high latitudes. It takes advantage of in situ observations taken over a decade (2014–2023) from Langmuir probes on board the low-Earth-orbit Swarm B satellite and spanning an altitude range of 500–530 km. The study also includes a comparison with Te values modeled using the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model and with Millstone Hill (42.6° N. 71.5° W) incoherent scatter radar observations. The largest Te variation with solar activity was found at high latitudes in the winter season, where Te shows a marked decreasing trend with solar activity in the polar cusp and auroral regions and, more importantly, at sub-auroral latitudes in the nightside sector. Differently, in the summer season, Te increases with solar activity in the polar cusp and auroral regions, while for equinoxes, variations are smaller and less clear. Mid-latitudes generally show negligible Te variations with solar activity, which are mostly within the natural dispersion of Te observations. The comparison between measured and modeled values highlighted that future implementations of the IRI model would benefit from an improved description of the Te dependence on solar activity, especially at high latitudes.

Climatology of deep O+ dropouts in the night‐time F‐region in solar minimum measured by a Langmuir Probe onboard the International Space Station

Abstract:The Floating Potential Measurement Unit (FPMU) onboard the International Space Station includes a Wide sweeping Langmuir Probe (WLP) that has been operating in the F‐region of the ionosphere at ∼400 km since 2006. While traditional Langmuir probe estimates include critical plasma parameters like electron density and temperature, we have also extracted the O+ percentage from the total ion constituents. This O+ composition dataset from the recent minimum in the Solar Cycle 24 reveals orbits with dropouts in O+ to below 80% of the total background ion density at ISS orbital altitudes. The observed O+ percentages during these dropouts are much lower than the values predicted by the International Reference Ionosphere 2016 (IRI2016) empirical model. In this paper, we present the climatology of these O+ dropouts with their dependency on season, local time and geographical location. The results show that the lowered O+ percentages are more significant in the winter hemispheres and are routinely observed for orbits in the pre‐sunrise periods. The patterns in O+ dropouts can be explained in part from the lowering of the O+/H+ transition height during solar minimum along with patterns in neutral wind variation.
Linking Solar Minimum, Space Weather, and Night Sky Brightness

Abstract:This paper presents time series observations and analysis of broadband night sky airglow intensity 4 September 2018 through 30 April 2020. Data were obtained at 5 sites spanning more than 8500 km during the historically deep minimum of Solar Cycle 24 into the beginning of Solar Cycle 25. New time series observations indicate previously unrecognized significant sources of broadband night sky brightness variations, not involving corresponding changes in the Sun's 10.7cm solar flux, occur during deep solar minimum. Even during a deep solar minimum the natural night sky is rarely, if ever, constant in brightness. Changes with time scales of minutes, hours, days, and months are observed. Semiannual night sky brightness variations are coincident with changes in the orientation of Earth's magnetic field relative to the interplanetary magnetic field. Solar wind plasma streams from solar coronal holes arriving at Earth's bow shock nose are coincident with major night sky brightness increase events. Sites more than 8500 km along the Earth's surface experience nights in common with either very bright or very faint night sky airglow emissions. The reason for this observational fact remains an open question. It is plausible, terrestrial night airglow and geomagnetic indices have similar responses to the solar energy input into Earth's magnetosphere. Our empirical results contribute to a quantitative basis for understanding and predicting broadband night sky brightness variations. They are applicable in astronomical, planetary science, space weather, light pollution, biological, and recreational studies.

Abstract:The bottomside thickness (B0) and shape (B1) are two important parameters considered in the bottomside electron density profile (EDP) specification of the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI) model that is the most widely accepted global empirical ionospheric model. In the present study, we investigated B0 and B1 as derived from least-square fitting of FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 (F7/C2) radio occultation (RO) profiles by employing certain quality constraints in accordance to coincident Digisonde soundings. We performed a comparative analysis of the local time diurnal, seasonal and latitudinal behaviour of B0 and B1 parameters from a huge database of F7/C2 profiles accumulated during the last two years (2020 and 2021) with estimations from the IRI-2016 submodels: Bil-2000, Gul-1987, and ABT-2009, referring to the bottomside profile characteristics during the low solar activity period of 25 th solar cycle. The results reveal daytime underestimation and nighttime overestimation features of IRI submodels. The typical pre-sunrise enhancement in B0 is clearly discernible in the F7/C2 observations which could not be reproduced in any of the IRI submodels. Moreover, the equatorial bottomside thickness anomaly (EBTA) presenting hemispheric asymmetry is not evidenced in the observed as well as modelled parameters. The sharp changeover in B0 magnitude from summer to winter solstice hemisphere and spring to fall equinox hemisphere in Gul-1987 indicates its inability to accurately represent the B0 variation at the equatorial and low latitude sector. Despite the fact that ABT-2009 performs relatively better than Gul-1987 sub-model based on F7/C2 and Digisonde datasets in different seasons, we demonstrate that there is room for possible improvement in terms of B0 and B1 representation.

Abstract:The solar wind continuously transfers energy into the Earth’s thermosphere-ionosphere system and variations in the solar wind properties modify the state of the system. The modifications are best visible during storm conditions when the ingestion of extreme amounts of solar wind energy into the thermosphere-ionosphere system causes global changes in thermosphere as well as large deviations in the ionospheric electron density from its quiet conditions. This study shows that there exists a persistent impact of the solar wind on the high-latitude electron density. A data set of 22 years of Total Electron Content (TEC) and 15 years of ionosonde data (critical frequency foF2 and height of maximum electron density hmF2) at Tromsø (70°N, 19°E) are used for correlation analyses with different solar wind parameters derived from measurements of the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). The results show that the ionospheric parameters systematically respond with an increase or decrease depending on local time, season and solar cycle. TEC and foF2 increase with solar wind energy during winter night conditions and decrease with increasing solar wind energy during summer daytime. The summer negative ionospheric response is more intense during solar maximum conditions, while the winter positive ionospheric response is stronger during solar minimum. An anomaly is observed around 10 UT (noon), when TEC and foF2 respond with an increase during solar minimum conditions. Cross polar cap plasma convection, particle precipitation and Joule heating are considered to be the main drivers of the electron density changes at Tromsø. Local time, season and solar cycle changes in the background ionosphere-thermosphere conditions lead to different effects of theses driving processes. The results help to better understand the variability of the high-latitude electron density and show that solar wind forcing causes a systematic and persistent response of the ionosphere which alternates depending on local time, season and solar cycle.

The total solar irradiance, UV emission and magnetic flux during the last solar cycle minimum

Abstract:We have analyzed the total solar irradiance (TSI) and the spectral solar irradiance as ultraviolet emission (UV) in the wavelength range 115-180 nm, observed with the instruments TIM and SOLSTICE within the framework of SORCE (The Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment) during the long solar minimum between the 23rd and 24th cycles. The wavelet analysis reveals an increase in the magnetic flux in the latitudinal zone of the sunspot activity, accompanied with an increase in the TSI and UV on the surface rotation timescales of solar activity complexes. In-phase coherent structures between the mid-latitude magnetic flux and TSI/UV appear when the long-lived complexes of the solar activity are present. These complexes, which are related to long- lived sources of magnetic fields under the photosphere, are maintained by magnetic fluxes reappearing in the same longitudinal regions. During the deep solar minimum (the period of the absence of sunspots) a coherent structure has been found, in which the phase between the integrated mid-latitude magnetic flux is ahead of the total solar irradiance on the timescales of the surface rotation.

High-latitude Observations of Dissipation-range Turbulence by the Ulysses Spacecraft during the Solar Minimum of 1993–96: The Spectral Break and Anisotropy

Abstract:We examine Ulysses magnetic field observations from 1993 to 1996 as the spacecraft made its first fast-latitude scan from the southern to the northern hemisphere. Most of the observations we use are representative of high-latitude solar minimum conditions. We examine magnetic field power spectra characteristics of interplanetary turbulence at high frequencies, where the spectrum breaks from an inertial range into the ion dissipation range. The onset and spectral index of the dissipation spectrum are consistent with low-latitude observations at 1 au. Both ranges have a ratio of power in perpendicular magnetic field components to parallel components near 3. The power spectrum ratio test developed by Bieber et al. for single-spacecraft analyses that determines the underlying anisotropy of the wave vectors yields only marginally more energy associated with field-aligned wave vectors than perpendicular wave vectors when comparing the inertial and dissipation-range spectra. The lack of significant change in the anisotropies between the inertial and dissipation ranges contrasts strongly with the turbulence found typically for 1 au near-ecliptic observations, where significant differences in both anisotropies are observed.

Abstract:The temperatures of some highly charged ions in the southern solar polar coronal hole are determined from the widths of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lines measured by the SUMER (Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation) instrument on SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory). Radiation from both light ions, such as Ne6+, Ne7+, Mg7+, Mg9+, Si6+, and Si7+, and heavy ions, such as Fe9+, Fe10+, and Fe11+, are recorded in off-limb observations. We refer here to the limb as the height, h0, where the limb brightening of the N IV 765 Å line maximizes. After correction of the measured line widths for instrument contributions, the intrinsic widths of these emission lines are derived. These are produced by thermal motions of the ions and turbulent wave motions of the background plasma. Since the turbulent line broadening should be the same for all the different ions, its upper limit can be determined from the widths of the iron lines, assuming zero iron temperatures. Thus, the range of kinetic temperatures permitted for the light species can be delimited. For example, the average temperature of Ne7+, at heights above the southern limb relative to h0 from 17'' to 64'', ranges between 1.3 and 5 × 106 K, and the average temperature of Ne6+ ranges between 1 and 4 × 106 K. The interpretation of these measurements does not require knowledge of the ion formation (or electron) temperature. It is also found that the ion thermal speed decreases with increasing mass per charge, while the ion temperature remains roughly constant. In another observation at heights from 167'' to 183'' above h0, the temperature of the ions increases slightly with increasing mass per charge, while the thermal speed reveals no clear trend. The upper limits of the turbulence amplitude, ⟨δv2⟩1/2, derived for these two altitude ranges are 33-37 and 44 km s-1, respectively. The implications of these results for the heating of the solar corona and the acceleration of the solar wind are discussed.
Identifying Coronal Sources of L1 Solar Wind Disturbances Using the Fisk Heliospheric Magnetic Field and Potential Field Extrapolations during Three Solar Minima

Abstract:The solar minima between solar cycles 22–23, 23–24, and 24–25 are the best observed minima on record. In situ solar wind and interplanetary magnetic field measurements by the Wind and ACE spacecraft at L1 with 1 hr cadence are explored using wavelet analyses for the most quiescent year during each minimum. Times of local peaks in periodicities are identified in the solar wind velocity, magnetic field components, and proton number densities. The measured radial velocities at these times are used to trace magnetic field lines to the photosphere using two models. The first is the Fisk heliospheric magnetic field that traces field lines from L1 to the photosphere. They connect exclusively to solar poles and in 88% of instances to locations of polar coronal holes (PCHs). The second model uses the Parker spiral to trace from L1 to the solar source surface and potential-field extrapolations from the source surface to the photosphere. These field lines terminate at equatorial and midlatitude coordinates, of which some are located close to coronal holes (CHs). This study connects for the first time CH signatures in the ecliptic plane at L1 with PCHs using the Fisk field. It shows how sources from both the solar equator and poles influence the solar wind at L1 and how the two models complement each other to identify these sources.

Abstract:This study investigates contributions of solar radiation and geomagnetic activity of consecutive 27-day recurrent geomagnetic storms (RGSs) to the variabilities in the equatorial ionospheric F-region in American Peruvian sector during 2007. Results show the ionospheric responses to the RGSs are quasi-periodic and multifaceted with highly evolved in the summer months. In High-Intensity Long-Duration Continuous Activity (HILDCAA) events, the ionospheric responses are more variable than in non-HILDCAA. The critical frequency and peak height of the F-layer tend to increase during storm-time in summer months. The maximum density enhancements are more than 70% in the three RGSs and they are long-lasting in the summer months. A new classification of daily variations in the virtual height of the F-layer ( ) is proposed: Mode A shows mixing of great height before noon and low height near midnight, Mode B shows moderate height near midnight, and Mode C shows mixing of high height before noon and great height near midnight. These Modes efficiently characterize the ionospheric variabilities and processes. The great uplifts of during night-time in the summer months coincide with the presence of strong disturbance dynamo electric fields and disturbed neutral winds generated by intensified Joule heating. The solar EUV plays a role in the uplifts of during the daytime. Zonal electric field disturbances and perturbations in the neutral meridional winds critically contribute to the equatorial ionospheric responses and ESF variabilities. Most cases of inhibited/suppressed ESF were observed in Mode A and occurred under overshielding conditions. The inhibited ESF associated with not raised in the recovery phase is mainly contributed by a cooling state after great uplifts by daytime thermospheric winds.

Abstract:Data measured by the Digisonde at the low‐latitude station Hainan from 2003 to 2016 are statistically analyzed to specify the diurnal average variations of the bottom‐side F region ionospheric plasma velocity vector V. This is the first comprehensive analysis of Digisonde measurements of low latitude F region plasma velocities in the East Asian sector that use a database covering more than one solar cycle. The velocity components VN (Northward), VE (Eastward) and VZ (Upward) are analyzed for two levels of solar flux and two levels of geomagnetic activity, respectively. The diurnal variations of the average VZ show three positive peaks near the prereversal enhancement (PRE) period, pre‐midnight, and before sunrise, respectively, and a prominent valley in the early morning. The averaged VZ significantly increased with solar flux in the period of PRE during equinoxes, but it was only slightly affected by Kp. The VE component was westward in daytime and eastward in nighttime. The average eastward VE increased significantly with solar flux but decreased with Kp, whereas the average westward VE exhibited only a small variation with solar flux and Kp. The average VN was almost southward independent of solar flux and Kp. The plasma velocities over the Hainan station were mainly caused by the electric field and neutral wind. Our results show that the features of the vertical and meridional velocities over the Hainan station in the morning are associated with the formation of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA).

Abstract:Both composition and temperature play a crucial role in determining the NO radiative cooling in lower thermosphere as observed by TIMED/SABER. In this work, we present a detailed investigation of seasonal variation in thermospheric NO radiative cooling. We have carried forward the investigation of \cite{li2018} regarding the variations in local nighttime peak NO radiative cooling and its altitude during solar maximum and solar minimum conditions. By analyzing latitudinal changes over quiet times for each month in year 2018, it is evident that both the investigative parameters exhibit summer-winter variability. The qualitative contribution of different species (i.e., NO, and O), and temperatures in determining the vertical profile of NO radiative cooling for different latitudes is investigated by utilizing the NRLMSISE-00 estimated parameters, and SNOE observed NO density. The temperature, NO density, meridional wind, and associated compositional variations due to asymmetrical solar heating in both the hemispheres during solar minimum conditions seem to be the dominating factor in controlling the NO radiative cooling during different seasons. The altitudes at which maximum cooling by NO occurs exhibits an inverse correlation with the amount of radiative cooling. The region of enhanced NO densities (polar and summer hemispheric low-mid latitude regions) have larger NO radiative cooling with lower peak altitudes in comparison to other regions (equatorial to winter hemispheric low-mid latitude regions), where NO radiative cooling is low with higher peak altitude values.
