Abstract:We report the observation of metal-like to insulator transition (MTI) in the 3dpyrochlore oxide Tb2Ti2O7 at 603 K due to the interaction of empty 3d orbitals of Ti4+ with O2- ions, evidenced by the transition in resistivity. Magnetisation, specific heat capacity and differential scanning calorimetry support the MTI, and the transition is of second order. An appreciable change in magnetisation with temperature, without any magnetic phase transition, is a behaviour typical in this family of compounds which is seldom observed in empty d orbital pyrochlores. The possible mechanism that supports the MTI in Tb2Ti2O7 is discussed. Subsequently, a broad change in magnetisation from 696 K is also seen. Abstract:Tb2Ti2O7: The cubic pyrochlore Quantum spin liquid reveals a sharp metal like to semiconductor transition (MIT) at 600 K, due to the empty 3d orbitals of Ti along with the interactions of O and Tb ions. Electric modulus plot, Nyquist plot and variations in relaxation time confirm the transition which is of second order. A broad change in magnetic moment, evident from the first-order derivative graph of M vs T without any magnetic phase transition is a behaviour typical in this family of compounds. Heat capacity measurements and their mechanism were discussed which supports MIT observed in Tb2Ti2O7, a phenomenon which is seldom observed in an empty d orbital pyrochlores. Abstract:The doping induced insulator-metal transition in $La_{1-x}Sr_{x}TiO_{3}$ is studied using the ab-initio LDA+DMFT method. Combining the LDA bandstructure for the actual, distorted structure found recently with multi-orbital DMFT to treat electronic correlations, we find: $(i)$ ferro-orbital order in the Mott insulating state without orbital degeneracy, $(ii)$ a continuous filling induced transition to the paramagnetic metal (PM) with $x$, and $(iii)$ excellent quantitative agreement with published photoemission data for the case of 6% doping. Our results imply that this system can be described as a Mott-Hubbard system without orbital (liquid) degeneracy.

Reentrant spin reorientation transition and Griffiths-like phase in antiferromagnetic TbFe$_{0.5}$Cr$_{0.5}$O$_3$

Abstract:The perovskite TbFe$_{0.5}$Cr$_{0.5}$O$_3$ shows two anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility at $T_N$ = 257K and $T_{SR}$ = 190K which are respectively, the antiferromagnetic and spin reorientation transition that occur in the Fe/Cr sublattice. Analysis of the magnetic susceptibility reveals signatures of Griffiths-like phase in this compound. Neutron diffraction analysis confirms that, as the temperature is reduced from 350K, a spin reorientation transition from $\Gamma_2$ (F$_x$, C$_y$, G$_z$) to $\Gamma_4$ (G$_x$, A$_y$, F$_z$) occurs at $T_N$ = 257K and subsequently, a second spin reorientation takes place from $\Gamma_4$ (G$_x$, A$_y$, F$_z$) to $\Gamma_2$ (F$_x$, C$_y$, G$_z$) at $T_{SR}$ = 190K. The $\Gamma_2$ (F$_x$, C$_y$, G$_z$) structure is stable until 7.7K where an ordered moment of 7.74(1)$\mu_\mathrm B$/Fe$^{3+}$(Cr$^{3+}$) is obtained from neutron data refinement. In addition to the long-range order of the magnetic structure, indication of diffuse magnetic scattering at 7.7K is evident, thereby lending support to the Griffiths-like phase observed in susceptibility. At 7.7K, Tb develops a ferromagnetic component along the crystallographic $a$ axis. Thermal conductivity, and spin-phonon coupling of TbFe$_{0.5}$Cr$_{0.5}$O$_3$ through Raman spectroscopy are studied in the present work. An antiferromagnetic structure with ($\uparrow \downarrow \uparrow \downarrow$) arrangement of Fe/Cr spins is found in the ground state through first-principles energy calculations which supports the experimental magnetic structure at 7.7K. The spin-resolved total and partial density of states are determined showing that TbFe$_{0.5}$Cr$_{0.5}$O$_3$ is insulating with a band gap of $\sim 0.12$ (2.4) eV within GGA (GGA+$U$) functionals.

Abstract:Layered 5d transition metal oxides (TMOs) have attracted significant interest in recent years because of the rich physical properties induced by the interplay between spin-orbit coupling, bandwidth and on-site Coulomb repulsion. In Sr2IrO4, this interplay opens a gap near the Fermi energy and stabilizes a Jeff=1/2 spin-orbital entangled insulating state at low temperatures. Whether this metal-insulating transition (MIT) is Mott-type (electronic-correlation driven) or Slater-type (magnetic-order driven) has been under intense debate. We address this issue via spatially resolved imaging and spectroscopic studies of the Sr2IrO4 surface using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S). The STS results clearly illustrate the opening of the (~150-250 meV) insulating gap at low temperatures, in qualitative agreement with our density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. More importantly, the measured temperature dependence of the gap width coupled with our DFT+dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) results strongly support the Slater-type MIT scenario in Sr2IrO4. The STS data further reveal a pseudogap structure above the Neel temperature, presumably related to the presence of antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

Metal-insulator transition through a semi-Dirac point in oxide nanostructures: VO$_2$ (001) layers confined within TiO$_2$

Abstract:Multilayer (TiO$_2$)$_m$/(VO$_2$)$_n$ nanostructures ($d^1$ - $d^0$ interfaces with no polar discontinuity) show a metal-insulator transition with respect to the VO$_2$ layer thickness in first principles calculations. For $n$ $\geq$ 5 layers, the system becomes metallic, while being insulating for $n$ = 1 and 2. The metal-insulator transition occurs through a semi-Dirac point phase for $n$ = 3 and 4, in which the Fermi surface is point-like and the electrons behave as massless along the zone diagonal in k-space and as massive fermions along the perpendicular direction. We provide an analysis of the evolution of the electronic structure through this unprecedented insulator-to-metal transition, and identify it as resulting from quantum confinement producing a non-intuitive orbital ordering on the V $d^1$ ions, rather than being a specific oxide interface effect. Spin-orbit coupling does not destroy the semi-Dirac point for the calculated ground state, where the spins are aligned along the rutile c-axis, but it does open a substantial gap if the spins lie in the basal plane.

Imaging emergent exotic quasiparticle state in a frustrated transition metal oxide

Abstract:The existence of rich Fermiology in anomalous metal phase in exotic superconductors has attracted considerable interests, as exemplified in copper, iron-based, and intermetallic frustrated kagome-based compounds. A common feature in these cases is pseudo-gap opening or long-range lattice/electronic ordering above superconducting critical temperature Tc. As yet developed area is the potential existence of exotic Fermiology in superconducting transition metal oxides on a geometrically frustrated lattice. Here, we focus on the spinel oxide superconductor LiTi2O4, which can be viewed as the hole-doped side of the orbital ordered 3d1 Mott system on the Ti-derived pyrochlore frustrated network. By the in-situ combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and epitaxial thin film growth, we discovered the abrupt flattening of near Fermi energy dispersion below the characteristic temperature T* ~ 150 K. While the emergent negative thermal expansion below T* strongly supports a distinct phase at low-temperature, absence of energy gap opening, splitting/folding of bands, nor long-range lattice distortion are seen across T*. We propose that the competition between growing instability towards orbital ordering and its inherent geometric frustration in the Ti-pyrochlore network results in a new quantum state of matter with robust high entropic nature below T*. Our findings collectively point to a unique Fermiology in frustrated three-dimensional transition metal oxides, and its connection to superconductivity below Tc is open as an interesting future challenge. Also, a potential guideline is unexpectedly provided for designing zero thermal expansion metal to develop future solid-state devices.

Abstract:Dimension reduction due to the orbital ordering has recently been proposed to explain the exotic charge, magnetic, and structural transitions in some three-dimensional transitional metal oxides. We present optical measurement on a spinel compound MgTi2O4 which undergoes a sharp metal-insulator transition at 240 K, and show that the spectral change across the transition can be well understood from the proposed picture of one-dimensional Peierls transition driven by the ordering of d(yz) and d(zx) orbitals. We further elaborate that the orbital-driven instability picture applies also very well to the optical data of another spinel CuIr2S4 reported earlier.

Abstract:The interface between band insulator TiO2 and correlated insulator VO2 is a fertile ground for new behaviors. In the present paper, we conducted the first-principles calculations to study the interfaces of VO2(m)/TiO2(n) superlattices (referred as m/n for simplicity, where m and n denote the number of rutile VO2 and TiO2 layers, respectively). Interestingly, the VO2/TiO2 superlattices show insulating states in the 2/6, 4/6 and 6/6 systems with the oscillation of V-V distances, while the superlattices present metallic states in the 1/6, 3/6 and 5/6 systems as the oscillation of V-V distances is broken. Accordingly, we reported an alternating metal-insulator behavior in VO2/TiO2 superlattices with the increasing number of VO2 layers. These findings may help to better understand the Peierls structural transition in correlated insulator, and may bring a light to the Schottky barrier homojunction composed of different VO2(m)/TiO2(n) superlattices.

Abstract:A novel Ti3+-based thiospinel ZnTi2S4 is successfully synthesized via a low-temperature ion-exchange reaction. ZnTi2S4 shows a signature of metallic ground state evidenced by a contribution of conduction electrons in the heat capacity and Pauli-like paramagnetic susceptibility. These observations contrast to the electronic state of similar Ti3+-based spinel MgTi2O4 exhibiting the metal-insulator transition associated with a molecular orbital crystallization (MOC). Furthermore, the magnetic susceptibility of ZnTi2S4 shows a pseudogap-like behavior indicated by a vast peak in the magnetic susceptibility around 110 K, likely originating from the MOC fluctuation. The origin of the difference in the electronic states of MgTi2O4 and ZnTi2S4 would be due to the different magnitude of overlap between Ti 3d and p orbitals (O: 2p and S: 3p). The presence of a MOC state in the close vicinity of insulator-metal transition may suggest the importance of itinerancy in a MOC.

Abstract:In order to observe the metal-insulator transition in V2O3 powder,we measured V2O3 powder sample by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy(THz-TDS) in the temperature range from 8 K to 220K.Through the analysis of the transmission and phase information of V2O3 sample in the terahertz band,we got the sample's complex refractive index and complex dielectric constant.Maxwell-Garnett effective medium theory(EMT) together with Boltzmann function is employed to describe the dielectric properties of the sample.The calculated results agree with the measurement indicating a metal-insulator phase transition,in which the volume fraction of metallic domain gradually increases with the temperature around the transition temperature.

Abstract:A polycrystalline sample of Tl2Ir2O7 was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature methods. Tl2Ir2O7 crystallizes in the cubic pyrochlore structure with space group Fd3̅m (No. 227). The Ir4+ oxidation state is confirmed by Ir–L3 X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Combined temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, resistivity, specific heat, and DFT+DMFT calculation data show that Tl2Ir2O7 is a Pauli paramagnetic metal, but it is close to a metal–insulator transition. The effective ionic size of Tl3+ is much smaller than that of Pr3+ in metallic Pr2Ir2O7; hence, Tl2Ir2O7 would be expected to be insulating according to the established phase diagram of the pyrochlore iridate compounds, A3+2Ir4+2O7. Our experimental and theoretical studies indicate that Tl2Ir2O7 is uniquely different from the current A3+2Ir4+2O7 phase diagram. This uniqueness is attributed primarily to the electronic configuration difference between Tl3+ and rare-earth ions, which plays a substantial role in determining the Ir–O–Ir bond angle, and the corresponding electrical and magnetic properties.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Valence-electron transfer and a metal-insulator transition in a strongly correlated perovskite oxide

Abstract:We present transport and thermal data for the quadruple-perovskites MCu3(Ti1-xRux)4O12 where 0 < x < 1. A metal-insulator transition (MIT) occurs for Ru concentrations x~0.75. At the same time, the Cu2+ antiferromagnetic state is destroyed and it's magnetic entropy suppressed by Ru on a 1:1 basis. This implies that each Ru transfers an electron to a Cu ion and thus the MIT correlates with filling the Cu 3d shell. The Cu spin entropy in this strongly correlated electron material provides a unique probe among MIT systems.

Abstract:Epitaxial SrTi1-xVxO3 thin films with thicknesses of ~16 nm were grown on (001)-oriented LSAT substrates using the pulsed electron-beam deposition technique. The transport study revealed a temperature driven metal-insulator transition (MIT) at 95 K for the film with x = 0.67. The films with higher vanadium concentration (x > 0.67) were metallic, and the electrical resistivity followed the T^2 law corresponding to a Fermi liquid system. In the insulating region of x < 0.67, the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity for the x = 0.5 and 0.33 films can be scaled with the variable range hopping model. The possible mechanisms behind the observed MIT were discussed, including the effects of electron correlation, lattice distortion and Anderson localization.

Abstract:The perovskite-like transition-metal oxide Gd$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ is investigated by measurements of resistivity, specific-heat, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Approaching the metal-to-insulator transition from the metallic regime ($x \geq 0.2$), the Sommerfeld coefficient $\gamma$ of the specific heat becomes strongly enhanced and the resistivity increases quadratically at low temperatures, which both are fingerprints of strong electronic correlations. The temperature dependence of the dynamic susceptibility, as determined from the Gd$^{3+}$-EPR linewidth, signals the importance of strong spin fluctuations, as observed in heavy-fermion compounds.

Abstract:Coexistence of localized and extended excitations is central to the macroscopic properties of correlated materials. For 5d transition-metal compounds, electron correlations alone generally do not lead to a metal -insulator (Mott) transition, with insulating behavior usually resulting from their coupling with magnetic ordering and/or structural distortions. 1T-TaS2 is a prototypical example of such correlated insulating behavior, with a high-symmetry metallic phase transforming into a distorted, charge-density wave (CDW) insulating state at low temperatures. The nature of the insulating phase as well as the existence and relevance of the localized electron physics remains debated. We resolve this standing controversy in 1T-TaS2 combining resonant inelastic x-ray spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. We observe five electronic excitations arising from the interband transitions of the Ta 5d orbitals and the S 3p ligand state, with none of the excitations on the order of the Mott gap. These excitations cannot be explained within the framework of standard multiplet calculations that assume a localized wave function, but instead, are captured by a band-theory framework accounting for the low symmetry of the crystal field in the CDW state. Our findings suggest that the electronic properties of 1T-TaS2 are dominated in the visible by both plasmonic quasiparticles and interband transitions, with no resonance associated with a putative Mott transition observed in the 0-3 eV energy range. Our discovery provides insights into the electron localization and the Mott vs band-insulator debate in 1T-TaS2 and other transition-metal materials.

Abstract:Localized electron polarons formed by the coupling of excess electrons and ionic vibrations play a key role in the functionalities of materials. However, the mechanism of the coexistence of delocalized electrons and localized polarons remains underexplored. Here, we report the discovery of high‐mobility two‐dimensional electron gas at the rutile TiO2 surface through argon ion irradiation‐induced oxygen vacancies. Strikingly, the electron gas forms electron polarons at lower temperatures, resulting in an abrupt metal‐insulator transition. Moreover, we find that the low‐temperature conductivity in the insulating state is dominated by excess free electrons with a high mobility of ∼103 cm2V−1s−1, whereas the carrier density is dramatically suppressed with decreasing temperature. Remarkably, we reveal that the application of an electric field can lead to a collapse of the localized states, resulting in a metallic state. These results reveal the strongly correlated/coupled nature between the localized electrons and high mobility electrons and offer a new pathway to probe and harvest the exotic electron state at the complex oxide surfaces. Observation of multiple flat bands and topological Dirac states in a new titanium based slightly distorted kagome metal YbTi3Bi4

Abstract:Kagome lattices have emerged as an ideal platform for exploring various exotic quantum phenomena such as correlated topological phases, frustrated lattice geometry, unconventional charge density wave orders, Chern quantum phases, superconductivity, etc. In particular, the vanadium based nonmagnetic kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A= K, Rb, and Cs) have seen a flurry of research interest due to the discovery of multiple competing orders. Here, we report the discovery of a new Ti based kagome metal YbTi3Bi4 and employ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), magnetotransport in combination with density functional theory calculations to investigate its electronic structure. We reveal spectroscopic evidence of multiple flat bands arising from the kagome lattice of Ti with predominant Ti 3d character. Through our calculations of the Z2 indices, we have identified that the system exhibits topological nontriviality with surface Dirac cones at the Gamma point and a quasi two-dimensional Dirac state at the K point which is further confirmed by our ARPES measured band dispersion. These results establish YbTi3Bi4 as a novel platform for exploring the intersection of nontrivial topology, and electron correlation effects in this newly discovered Ti based kagome lattice.
