Abstract:Certain types of water-mist systems can suppress tunnel fires effectively. This study focuses on the performance of a high-pressure water-mist system used in a scaled fire test conducted in a section of a scaled-down road tunnel. The length, width, and height of the section were 6 m, 2.4 m, and 2 m, respectively, which are one-fourth of the dimensions of the ISMALIA- SINA tunnel across the SUEZ Canal. The high-pressure water mist system had a pump pressure of 40 bar, and the system was designed according to the pressure generated by the pump. Without a ventilation fan, the fire-suppression time was 170 s, and the amount of water required to suppress the fire completely was 297.50 L. When a ventilation fan was used, the maximum-temperature location moved upstream from the center of the tunnel section toward the air-inlet end of the tunnel, and 210 s was the fire suppression time while the amount of water required to suppress the fire completely was 367.50 L. The findings of this study can be used to evaluate the fire-suppression performance of a high-pressure water mist system for a small section of the ISMALIA- SINA tunnel, which is the largest tunnel in the world. In this research, the experimental method was used to reach a clear understanding for the behavior of a bus or truck fire inside a road tunnel, and to measure the time required to fully suppress the fire using the water high pressure water mist system, the amount of water consumed, and the effect of using smoke exhaust fans on the fire and the time and the water to reach the suppression in all Extinguishing stages.
