Abstract:Hybrid plasmonic waveguides based on a surface oxidized dielectric nanowire placed on a metal surface can facilitate simultaneously deep subwavelength mode confinement and large propagation length. Directional coupling based on such waveguides are theoretically investigated. Much lower crosstalk is noticed for such hybrid plasmonic waveguides compared to conventional waveguides based on bare dielectric nanowires. Some modifications, such as vertically placing the metal surfaces or using a metallic block between the nanowires, are studied which can further reduce the crosstalk between two waveguides. The proposed low crosstalk structures based on hybrid plasmonic waveguides can provide a simple platform for plasmonic integration which can at the same time easily interface with traditional photonic circuits.

Abstract:Subwavelength optical field confinement and low-loss propagation are of great significance for compact photonic integration. However, the field confinement capability of plasmonic devices is always accompanied by the inherent Ohmic loss. Although recent studies have shown that sodium (Na) exhibits lower loss than noble metals in the near-infrared band, the field confinement ability has not been adequately assessed. Meanwhile, the high chemical reactivity of Na should be regulated for practical application. Two dielectric-coated Na nanowires, consisting of cylindrical Na nanowires with one or two dielectric layers as claddings, are proposed and investigated in this paper. Based on finite element calculations, we thoroughly study the modal fields and low-loss propagation properties of dielectric-coated Na nanowires. The results demonstrate that Na exhibits lower loss and stronger field confinement than the typical plasmonic material silver. These findings indicate the performance of plasmonic devices can be considerably improved by employing the metal Na compared with devices using noble metals, which may promote the applications in subwavelength photonic devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmon photonics provides a feasible method for achieving high-density photonic integration and low-loss optical field transmission. Here we propose a sodium-based hybrid plasmonic waveguide consisting of a cylindrical sodium nanowire and a Si nano-rib waveguide located on the silica substrate at the wavelength of 1550 nm and investigate the mode properties by using the finite element method. The results indicate that ultra-deep subwavelength modal fields with the mode areas of 9.64 × 10 −6 A 0 ∼ 9.507 × 10 −4 A 0 ( A 0 = λ 2 / 4) and propagation lengths of 8 ∼ 46.5 μm could be achieved when the thickness of the spacer is less than 4 nm. Moreover, investigations on fabrication tolerance and crosstalk show that the proposed waveguide exhibits a good fabrication error tolerance and very low cross-talk between adjacent structures with a minimum separation distance of around 300 nm, which makes it quite suitable for applications in photonic integration. These findings may have potential applications in the field of photonic devices, such as nanowaveguides, lasers, and sensors.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.
Optical Performance Of Single-Mode Hybrid Dielectric-Loaded Plasmonic Waveguide-Based Components

Abstract:The single mode hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide is presented at the wavelength of 1.55 mu m. We show that this waveguiding structure, consisting of a low-index SiO2-stripe sandwiched between a high-index Si-nanowire and a silver film, achieves both long propagation length and strong field confinement with high power intensity. Components such as 90 degrees-circular and S-shaped bends, based on the proposed waveguide with an intensity confinement area of 50x200 nm(2), can obtain a total transmission efficiency exceeding 85% for various bend radii. Finally, we demonstrate that the efficient directional couplers can be developed using two coupled waveguides. In particular, we determine the typical coupling lengths and maximum transfer power for different structural parameters of the coupler. Abstract:Two types of surface plasmon polariton waveguides consisting of square metal nanowires or nanotubes covered by low-high index dielectric layers are presented and their guiding characteristics are investigated numerically at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nm. Numerical analysis reveals that depending on the sizes of the covered low-high index dielectric layers, the nanowire based waveguides can be tuned to provide subwavelength confinement of the plasmonic modes with low propagation loss. Even enhanced optical confinement could be achieved by further increasing the nanowire size or replacing the metal nanowires by nanotubes. Consideration of directional coupling between two identical such plasmonic waveguides reveal ultra-low-crosstalk can be realized with relatively small separation distances. These waveguiding structures, compatible with modern fabrication methods, potentially enable the realization of numerous ultra-compact integrated photonic components.

Consequently, a 90°-circular bend built with the HDLW can achieve a total loss of 0.3 dB with a small bending radius of 2J.1m. A ring resonator formed with the HDLW shows the excellent performance: with a ring radius of 5 J.1m, this resonator exhibits a large free spectral range (22 nm), a narrow bandwidth (4 nm), and high extinction ration (20 dB). The superior performance of these plasmonic components makes them promising building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:We report the observation of strongly confined plasmon modes in hybridized metal-dielectric slot waveguides, which consist of semiconductor-insulator-semiconductor nanostructures embedded inside the low-index gaps of conventional hybrid plasmonic configurations. Owing to the combined effects induced by the high-refractive-index-contrast dielectric slot and semiconductor-insulator-metal configurations, tight field localization (A(eff) similar to lambda(2)/1250-lambda(2)/55) in conjunction with large propagation distances (L similar to 70-180 mu m) can be realized simultaneously at telecommunication wavelength. Through comprehensive numerical simulations, the characteristics of the fundamental hybrid modes are revealed in detail by optimizing key structural parameters of the waveguides. The advantages over their traditional hybrid waveguiding counterparts are unraveled. In addition, the possibilities of extending our current design into other metal/dielectric composites are also discussed. Our studies regarding hybrid metal-dielectric slot structures and their alternatives in this paper are expected to provide effective approaches for the enhancement of traditional hybrid modes' properties and open up new opportunities for the constructions of high-performance plasmon waveguides and devices.

Abstract:Two types of plasmonic waveguiding structures based on hollow dielectric nanowires are proposed and their modal properties are investigated numerically at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The first type of waveguide consists of a high-index hollow nanowire covered directly by a thin metallic film. Depending on the size of the hollow nanowire, such a waveguide could support a plasmonic mode with lower propagation loss than the metal-coated nanowire structures without a hollow core. To further reduce the propagation loss, a second type of waveguide is proposed, which includes an additional low-index silica buffer layer between the metal layer and the hollow nanowire. Simulations reveal that the additional low-index buffer could enable strong hybridization between the dielectric mode and the plasmonic mode, which leads to even lower propagation loss while maintaining nanoscale confinement similar to that of the first type of waveguide. Both of the proposed waveguides are feasible using modern fabrication methods and could facilitate potential applications in integrated photonic components and circuits.

Abstract:The optical characteristics of a metal-coated dielectric wedge structure are investigated at a wavelength of 1550 nm. The effects of the metal/gap layers' thicknesses, as well as the dimension of the dielectric wedge on the guided modes' properties, are systematically analyzed. It is revealed that the characteristics of the fundamental quasi-TE and quasi-TM plasmonic modes supported by the configuration demonstrate similar trends against the variation of the metal layer thickness while exhibiting quite different behaviors with the change of the wedge size. By choosing appropriate physical dimensions, both modes could simultaneously achieve low modal loss and subwavelength field confinement, along with reasonable mode power inside the low-index gap region. Investigations on the directional coupling between adjacent identical waveguides indicate that ultralow crosstalk can be enabled by the quasi-TE mode, with the coupling length more than two orders of magnitude larger than that achieved by the plasmonic mode in conventional hybrid counterparts. The presented metal-coated dielectric wedge structures can be employed as important building blocks for a number of integrated nanophotonic components, and could also enable numerous applications at the subwavelength scale.

Abstract:Surface plasmons have the unique advantages of local field enhancement and subwavelength field confinement, thus have been widely used in subwavelength photonic as well as nanoscale imaging, nano-lasers, and nonlinear optics. In this work, we report a cylindrical composite hybrid plasmonic waveguide, which supports a plasmon mode with ultra-strong field confinement that is formed due to the coupling of the surface plasmon mode in the Na nanowire waveguide and hybrid surface plasmon mode in the Na-based cylindrical hybrid waveguide. The modal properties of the proposed waveguide are thoroughly investigated by using the finite element method. The proposed structure allows the mode coupling to be enhanced, which in turn gives it superior performance. Further, the optimized parameters are determined, under which the waveguide exhibits an ultra-small normalized mode area of 1.52 × 10 −5 and a high figure of merit over 3.2 × 10 3 . The proposed waveguide may make a contribution to the development of nanoscale devices in photonic integrated circuits, such as nanowaveguides, resonators, and nano-lasers.
