Abstract:We propose a hierarchical multiscale modeling approach to simulate the hydro-mechanical coupling behavior in saturated high-porosity sandstone, with a particular focus on the occurrence and transition of compaction bands. In this multiscale approach, we use the finite element method (FEM) to solve the global boundary value problem for a sandstone, and the discrete element method (DEM) to solve the local representative volume elements (RVEs) embedded at the Gauss integration points of the FE mesh to provide the effective material constitutive responses required for FEM. The global governing equations for a coupled hydro-mechanical problem are solved with the standard u–p formulation, where the total stress is decomposed into the pore pressure and the effective stress which is directly derivable from the DEM solution of the RVEs, according to the seminal Terzaghi's effective stress principle. By choosing proper RVEs to represent the typical microstructure of high-porosity sandstone, we perform both drained and undrained simulations on saturated sandstone specimens to examine localized compactive failures developed therein. We identify that both mean effective stress and porosity control critically the initiation and development of failure modes in sandstone. Under undrained shear, our simulations show that a sandstone specimen may first develop a compaction band followed by a gradual transition to a shear-enhanced compaction band and even shear band, with the build-up of excessive pore pressure and hence drop of mean effective stress. In the specimen, regions experiencing localized volumetric contraction show relatively higher pore pressure than other regions and act as the source of flux flow. The Darcy flux peaks during the formation of compaction band and decreases gradually in the following stages. To distinguish the different failure stages with distinct physical attributes, the ratio of deviatoric strain to volumetric strain is adopted as a useful indicator signifying the underlying microstructural mechanisms for different deformation bands. This study signifies the importance of considering pore pressure and mean effective stress in fluid-involved engineering operations, e.g. aquifer management, hydrocarbon extraction and CO2 geological sequestration.

Abstract:The shear failure of rock is a major cause of rock slope instability and consequent landslides. To determine the forming mechanism of infrasonic waves during the loss of stability of sandstone slopes, experiments were carried out using a shear loading device and an infrasonic monitoring device. In the experiments, infrasonic wave events were identified, and the characteristic parameters of infrasonic waves were extracted to analyze the features of the infrasonic wave response during the shear failure of sandstone. The study results show that: (1) the whole process of shear failure was associated with infrasound events. A normalized energy cumulative coefficient of over 0.6 and a normalized infrasound rate of over 0.89 are the key time nodes for alarming landslide; (2) with an increase in sample size, the shear resistance of the sample increases logarithmically, the total energy of infrasound events increases exponentially, and the average dominant frequency of infrasound events decreases linearly; and (3) with an increase in axial pressure, the shear of the rock increases almost linearly, the number of infrasound events increases linearly, and the average dominant frequency of infrasound events increases exponentially. The research results provide important guidance for the dynamic monitoring and evaluation of the stability of sandstone slopes and can provide a theoretical reference for landslide alarming of sandstone slopes using infrasonic waves.

Abstract:Studying the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of damaged rocks holds practical significance in guiding tunnel or roadway support and assessing the stability of engineering rock masses. To uncover the failure mechanisms of sandy mudstone with varying degrees of damage, we conducted cyclic loading‐unloading tests to create specimens at different damage levels. Subsequently, uniaxial loading tests were performed to investigate the fundamental mechanical properties, wave velocity, and acoustic emission (AE) parameter evolution characteristics of the damaged specimens. The classification of damaged rocks was based on the energy evolution characteristics of damaged sandy mudstone. Finally, we discuss the damage and deterioration mechanisms of different types of sandy mudstone. The findings contribute to establishing a theoretical foundation for evaluating the degree of rock damage.

Abstract:In order to study the strength and failure characteristics of sandstone with mudstone interlayer. According to mudstone interlayer dip and distribution form, it can be divided into three kinds of sandstone: sandstone with horizontal mudstone interlayer is Class I; sandstone with inclined mudstone interlayer is Class II; sandstone with irregular distribution mudstone is Class III. The three kinds of sandstone uniaxial test were carried out and combined with the theory of layered rock mass failure, it revealed mechanical properties and failure mechanism of sandstone with mudstone interlayer. The results show that: crack generated from interface in Class I and II and crack generated from irregular distribution mudstone interlayer in Class III; The sandstone with higher strength is destroyed before the mudstone interlayer; sandstone at unbonded interface is failure before sandstone at bonded interface; Three kinds of sandstone vary in compressive strength, Class II is greater than Class III while Class III is greater than Class I.

Abstract:Rocks are a typical kind of heterogeneous material composed of differences in size, shape, type, and mineral particle distribution. The strength and deformation characteristics of rocks are controlled by their internal heterogeneous structures. A numerical model was built to analyse the strength and failure characteristics of sandstone samples with randomly distributed heterogeneous. The results revealed that heterogeneous structures induce local stress concentrations and accelerate sample failure. At a loading rate of 0.01 mm/s, the mechanical properties of sandstone samples with soft heterogeneous particles are uniformly smaller than those of standard sandstone samples, while those of sandstone samples with hard heterogeneous particles follow different variation rules, depending on the specific heterogeneous particle content. With the differences between heterogeneous particles and sandstone particles in properties, an increase is observed in the mechanical properties of samples with different heterogeneous particle contents. Soft heterogeneous structures determine the crack initiation position of the main crack and the development and propagation space of cracks through their distribution pattern, while hard heterogeneous structures are load-bearing and change crack propagation paths. When there are multiple structures with different properties in rocks, micro-cracks occur first between soft heterogeneous particles, and the distribution pattern of soft heterogeneous particles determines the ultimate failure mode of samples as well as the propagation paths and development space of cracks.

Abstract:The hydro-mechanical behaviour and the constitutive model of sandy mudstone were investigated in this article. Two groups of hydro-mechanical triaxial compression tests were conducted. The results indicated that the inelastic deformation, damage, permeability and failure of the sandy mudstone were affected by the pore pressure and confining pressure. The hydro-mechanical behaviour was characterised by the coupled elastoplastic damage model. This model was based on the effective stress principle and numerical return mapping algorithms. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to examine the effects of four key parameters on the modelling of elastoplastic and damage behaviour. This study can provide a foundation for physical understanding and mathematical modelling of sandy mudstone under coupled loads.

Abstract:In this study, mechanical behavior of sandstone is investigated through laboratory triaxial loading tests under various confining pressures (5, 15, and 20 MPa) and pore gas pressure (0, 1, and 2 MPa). Rock strength and its failure mode are compared and analyzed on the basis of the experimental results. It is seen that the pore gas pressure induced the diminution of compression peak strength, cohesion (5.3–9.1%), and friction angle (4.6–9.7%) and led to local brittle failure at both ends of the rock. With the increase of the confining pressure, the brittle–ductile transition of the mechanical behavior took place; meanwhile, significant plastic deformation and volumetric dilatation are noticed. It is indicated that the failure and nonlinear mechanical behavior of red sandstone are essentially related to the coupling effect between the damage and plastic deformation. Accordingly, a coupled elastoplastic damage model for the sandstone under different drainage conditions is proposed along with a non-associated plastic potential function. The coupling between the damage and plastic deformation is established by introducing the independent damage variable in the plastic yield criterion. The results show that the model is capable to describe the main features of the mechanical behaviors of the sandstone. The strength, deformation characteristics, and the pre-peak plastic hardening characteristic are in good agreement with the experimental descriptions.

Abstract:<p>This paper presents a unified experimental and numerical investigation on mechanical behaviors of a sandstone with brittle-ductile transition. A series of triaxial compression tests are performed at room temperature under a wide range of confining pressure, from which some critical states of damage are originally identified. It is shown that shear-induced dilation occurs in brittle faulting while macroscopic dilatant cataclastic flow takes place in the rock under elevated pressures without occurrence of shear bands by strain localization. There is a clear trend for peak strength to increase nonlinearly with confining pressure and that microcracking-related local friction is the dominant mechanism of inelastic deformation. In order to describe the nonlinear mechanical behaviors of the sandstone, a micromechanics-based isotropic plasticity-damage coupling model is formulated, in which two critical states of damage at rock failure are taken into account to establish the relations between the model's parameters and experimental data. Theoretical predictions of the strength envelope and nonlinear mechanical responses of the sandstone show a quantitative agreement with the test results including the main features of stress-strain curves with different confining pressures.</p>

Abstract:To research the failure characteristics of rock masses with weak interlayers, a combined rock mass model composed of sandstone-mudstone-siltstone is established (CRM). Theoretical analysis, mechanical tests, and numerical simulations are used to study the failure mechanism of CRM with weak interlayers. The RMT-301 mechanical test system is used to execute the compression testing of the combined rock mass, and the FLAC3D strain softening constitutive model is used for comparative analysis. The results show the following: the strength difference causes additional stress near the contact surface; the strength of the both ends of the CRM decreases while the strength of the weak interlayer increases; the thickness ratio of the mudstone interlayer has a powerful impact on the force state and deformation characteristics of CRM; the peak strength of CRM rises with increasing confining pressure (σ3); when the combined rock mass is under uniaxial compression, its peak strength shows obvious strain-softening behavior; when the σ3 raises, the failure mode of the combined rock mass alters from tensile failure to shear failure; high σ3 enhances the mechanical properties of the weak interlayers and weakens the weakening effect of weak interlayers on the CRM to a certain degree; the level of damage deterioration of the combined rock mass declines with the rise of σ3 because while the σ3 improves the stress state of the CRM, the initial damage of the weak interlayer is reduced.

Abstract:Due to excavation disturbances and the coupled hydro-mechanical effects, deep rock masses experience nonlinear large deformations in the surrounding rock, necessitating an urgent exploration of the rock damage and failure mechanisms from the perspectives of hydro-mechanical coupling and mechanical properties. Therefore, this study conducted uniaxial cyclic loading-unloading tests on sandstone samples with different water contents (0%, 0.26%, 0.52%, 0.78%, and 1.04%) to investigate the microstructural evolution, energy evolution laws, and failure characteristics under varying water contents and cyclic loading conditions. The main conclusions are as follows:(1) Concerning micro-pore structures, as the water content increases, the porosity and maximum pore size of the sandstone first decrease and then increase. At 0% water content, the porosity is 4.82% and the maximum pore size is 31.94 μm. At 0.26% water content, both porosity and maximum pore size decrease to 3.03% and 16.15 μm, respectively. When the water content reaches 1.04%, the porosity and maximum pore size increase to 14.34% and 45.99 μm, respectively. (2) Regarding energy evolution laws, the energy evolution of the specimens during cyclic loading-unloading mainly converts to elastic energy, showing a step-wise increase in energy. Further analysis reveals that the water content has a significant impact on the dissipation energy coefficient of the sandstone. At lower stress levels (<0.4σ max ), the water content has a negligible effect, while at higher stress levels (>0.85σ max ), an increase in water content leads to increased fluctuations in the dissipation energy coefficient. (3) In terms of failure characteristics, with increasing water content, the failure mode of the specimens shifts from primary crack failure to microcrack failure, corresponding to the energy evolution during cyclic loading-unloading processes.

Abstract:Rock brittleness is a crucial mechanical property and essential for fracability evaluation and fracturing scheme design in unconventional reservoirs. However, the influence of inherent anisotropy on deep laminated sandstone's mechanical properties and brittleness characteristics is rarely investigated. The energy transformation and damage evolution reflected by complete stress-strain curves are analyzed during the entire process of rock rupture under compressions. A new brittleness index is established based on energy evolution during sandstone failure. Its advantages involve comprehensively considering the energy transformation characteristics at both pre-peak and post-peak stages and the capability to characterize the effect of confining pressure and bedding plane (BP) geometry on sandstone brittleness. The triaxial compression tests on sandstones are conducted to validate the reliability and accuracy of the new brittleness index. Numerical simulations are then performed to further investigate the manner in which BP angle, BP density, and confining pressure control the brittleness anisotropy of deep laminated sandstones based on the finite element method. Then the acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of anisotropic sandstone and correlations between AE mode and brittleness index are discussed. The results indicated that the anisotropy of mechanical properties and brittleness of deep laminated sandstones were significantly affected by BP angle, BP density, and confining pressure. With the increase of BP angle, the brittleness index of deep laminated sandstone decreases first and then increases, showing a U-shape variation law, whose maximum and minimum values are obtained at φ =0° and φ =45°, respectively. The AE characteristics were closely related to rock brittleness, which was jointly controlled by BP geometry and confining pressure. The results provide a basis for the brittleness and fracability evaluation and optimum hydraulic fracturing design in deep laminated sandstones.

Abstract:Sandstone is a kind of bedded rock mass commonly used in engineering. The deformation and strength of bedded sandstone impose some problems during excavation. In this study, triaxial unloading tests were conducted on rock specimens (considering seven different bedding angles ( β )). The results revealed the following key points: (1) At a constant confining pressure, the elastic modulus was gradually increasing when the bedding angle increased. Furthermore, after initial decreasing, the deformation modulus was increased and had a U-shaped distribution. (2) During the unloading of the axial compression, the rate of axial strain variations was initially increased and then decreased while the bedding angle increased (it has exhibited an inverted U-shaped distribution). However, the peak strength, cohesion, and angle of internal friction of rock specimens showed an initial decreasing and then increasing trend. (3) During the loading and unloading stages, the confining pressure reduces the anisotropy of bedded rock masses. (4) In the triaxial unloading test, the failure of rock specimens can be classified into four modes. When there was a large intersection angle between the bedding plane and the unloading direction, failure developed at the bedding planes.

Abstract:Abstract Firstly, Triaxial compression test of mudstones under low confining pressure is conducted to study deformation behaviors and mechanical properties. Then, assumed that the strength of micro-elements fits power function distribution, this paper determines a damage variable and establishes a damage constitutive model which effectively reflects the residual strength in the process of rock failure. Meanwhile, using testing data is to validate the reliability of the proposed model in this paper. Finally, impacts caused by statistic parameters variation on compression strength are analyzed comprehensively. These research outcomes presented in this paper also can effectively offer significant reference for the development of rock mechanics and rock engineering.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of sandstone are, to a large extent, controlled by its microstructure. When sandstone is loaded, the stress conditions and stress history can influence the sandstone in terms of the deformation parameters, strength parameters, failure modes, as well as acoustic properties and other petrophysical parameters. In this paper, we show how we may use a discrete element model to compute the mechanical behaviour based on the microstructure of the rock, as obtained from micro-computed tomography. The model is calibrated with triaxial test data obtained with three different sandstones. The key element in the model is a contact law, attempting to capture deformation and failure at the level of the grain scale. A micromechanics-based core-scale model was also suggested using the same contact law but without explicitly mimicking the rock microstructure. The simulation results from both the microscale model and the macroscale model were in reasonably good agreement with the laboratory measurements on sandstone specimens.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to study the mechanical properties and permeability evolution of sandstone by triaxial compression tests under different confining and seepage pressures. In addition, a permeability evolutionary early warning model for the sandstone failure process under hydromechanical coupling is proposed. The results are helpful for understanding the influence of in‐situ stress and seepage pressure on deep sandstone and the permeability evolutionary mechanism, and can be applied to the early warning of water inrush disasters in deep underground structures In situ stress and groundwater have important effects on the deformation and stability of deep underground rock masses. Therefore, it is extremely important to study the mechanical properties and permeability evolutionary processes of rocks under hydromechanical (HM) coupling. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties and permeability evolution of sandstone using triaxial compression tests under different confining and seepage pressures. The test results show that the confining pressure can increase the strength of sandstone, whereas the seepage pressure has the opposite effect. The initial and maximum permeabilities were positively correlated with seepage pressure and negatively correlated with confining pressure. The confining and seepage pressures had little effect on the change in initial permeability. As a common parameter of acoustic emission (AE), cumulative AE counts can intuitively reflect the permeability evolutionary process in the sandstone failure process. A permeability evolutionary early warning model for the sandstone failure process under HM coupling is proposed. The results are helpful for understanding the influence of in situ stress and seepage pressure on deep sandstone and the permeability evolutionary mechanism, and they can be used to provide early warning of water inrush disasters in deep underground structures.

Abstract:Bedding planes exert great influences on the mechanical properties of layered rocks. To investigate influences of properties of bedding planes on the strength, failure mode, and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of rocks, three-point bending tests were carried out on layered sandstone containing bedding planes of different dip angles. Results show that the failure strength of the layered sandstone shows a first large decrease and then slight increase trend with the rise of the dip angle θ of bedding planes under both conventional loading and multi-block cyclic loading. According to failure characteristics of the rock, the failure can be divided into three modes: matrix failure, mixed failure, and failure of bedding planes. In addition, the damage characteristics reflected by the AE count and AE energy, RA-AF distribution characteristics, and AE source locations show consistency in the same failure mode. Influenced by the multi-block cyclic loading, the failure strength, peak deformation, damage ratio reflected by the AE count and AE count at failure, and the number of shear cracks reflected by the RA-AF distribution of rocks with bedding planes of the same dip angle all increase to different extents. Moreover, the majority of residual deformation and damage in the loading process occurs in the initial period of cyclic loading and unloading in each block. The research result represents a useful complement to the mechanics theory of layered rocks and is of important significance for ensuring the safety of rock engineering.

Abstract:For the rocky slope with potential sliding hazard, there are a larger number of flaws such as fractures and joints, which greatly affect the stability and safety of the slope. Thus, it is important and relevant to the behavior of fractured rock from a macroscopic and mesoscopic perspective by experiments and numerical simulation. In this paper, the mechanical properties and crack evolution behavior of grey sandstone containing two parallel fissures under the uniaxial compression tests were evaluated by experimental and bond-based Peridynamics (BB-PD) simulation. The results show that with the increase of fissure dip angle, the peak strength, elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio of pre-cracked sandstone samples under uniaxial compression condition gradually increase. At the same time, the total energy, dissipated energy and elastic peak energy of fractured sandstone also increase with the increase of fissure dip angle. In order to validate the experimental findings, a set of calibration parameters were used to model the intact samples using BB-PD. The numerical simulation reproduced the stress-strain curves, mechanical parameters and failure modes of double-fractured sandstone. Based on the results of indoor experiments and numerical simulations, it is concluded that the failure mode of double-fractured sandstone has three types under uniaxial compression: tensile failure, shear failure and conjugate shear failure. As the fissure dip angle increases, the main control factor for failure of sample gradually changes from rock bridge failure to secondary crack coalescence, and the stress distribution of fractured sandstone gradually changes from high stress concentration in the rock bridge zone to uniform stress distribution as a whole.

Abstract:To explore the failure mechanism of rock with holes and fissures, uniaxial compression tests of sandstone samples with combined double hole and double fissure defects were carried out using Particle Flow Code 2D (PFC2D) numerical simulation software. The failure behaviour and mechanical properties of the sandstone samples with combined double hole and double fissure defects at different angles were analysed, and the evolution results of the stress field and crack propagation were studied. The results show that with a decrease in fissure angle, the crack initiation stress, damage stress, elastic modulus and peak stress of the defective rock decrease, while the peak strain increases, and the brittleness of the rock is weakened. Rocks with combined double hole and double fissure defects at different angles lead to different failure modes, crack initiation positions and crack development directions. After uniaxial compression, both compressive stress and tensile stress concentration areas are produced in the defective rock, but the compressive stress concentration is of primary importance. The concentration area is mainly distributed around the holes and fissures and the defect connecting line, and the stress concentration area decreases with the decreasing fissure angle. This study can correctly predict the mechanical properties of rock with combined double hole and double fissure defects at different angles and provide a reference for actual rock engineering.

Abstract:It is of great practical significance to study the microscopic mechanisms and strength damage laws of deep rock masses under the coupling action of water and rock. The pore structure and strength softening characteristics of sandstone under the action of different water absorption time are studied. Under the action of water–rock coupling, the cement between minerals dissolves and suspension loss of attached particles, which forms new pores and cracks, thus reducing the stability of the mineral structure. At the same time, the presence of hydrophilic minerals accelerates the speed of water absorption and softening of sandstone. It is found the relationships among sandstone stress, pore structure and water absorption time provide an evolution law for the microscopic pore structure during softening of sandstone strength, and a model diagram of the microscopic pore structure is established. Using the acoustic emission characteristics of water–rock coupling, the constitutive relationship between the accumulated ringing count of acoustic emission and stress under the action of different water contents is deduced. A comparison of experimental data with the model curve shows that the obtained constitutive model exhibits a high degree of agreement. Under the coupling action of water and rock, clay minerals are an important cause of rock strength softening, but there are certain limitations. Therefore, the softening mechanisms of some soft rock clays with little or no clay minerals should be further studied.
