Abstract:As a new growth point of shale gas production, carbonate-rich shale has recently attracted great interest. However, gas production from this reservoir was poor since the properties of the carbonate-rich shale have not been systematically studied. This is an urgent need to be addressed. Downhole cores collected from an exploration well were analyzed by micro-structure experiments (X-ray diffraction, mineral quantitative evaluation, low-pressure nitrogen adsorption, and mercury intrusion piezometry test) and macro-mechanical tests (triaxial compression, Brazilian splitting, and fracture toughness test) to obtain multiscale characterization of carbonate-rich shale. The intrinsic relationship between the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of this reservoir has been revealed. The results showed that (1) The content of carbonate minerals exceeds 30%, just slightly lower than that of quartz. Calcite has large particle sizes and is closely cemented with quartz to form a dense rock skeleton. (2) The maximum adsorption volume, specific surface area, total pore volume and average pore diameter values are poor, which is unfavorable for shale gas accumulation. Limited porosity and permeability and great tortuosity can be obstacles to the release of accumulated gas. (3) High peak deviatoric stress, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio were contributed by dense rock skeleton. (4) Narrow maximum main fracture width is not favorable to place proppants and further to create effective gas transport channels. (5) High tensile strength and fracture toughness enhance high breakdown and extension pressure. These comprehensive insights are of great significance for both the exploration and development of carbonate-rich shale reservoirs.

Abstract:Deep carbonates hydrocarbon resources are abundant and hold significant potential for sustainable energy development in future. Acid fracturing is an effective technology for carbonate reservoirs development; however, it is difficult to predict the rock initiation pressure for acid fracturing, which restricts the efficient development of carbonate reservoirs. In this paper, the changes of elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio and tensile strength of carbonate rock samples are tested under different acid treatment duration and temperature, and rock mechanics parameter evolution models for acid treatment rocks are obtained by experimental results fitting. Then, the evolution models are embedded into fracturing finite element calculation program to predict fracture initiation pressures accounting the dynamic evolution of rock mechanics parameters for acid fracturing. The error between the predicted fracture initiation pressure and the field data is only 0.46%, which shows a very good accuracy. The study shows that the elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio and tensile strength of carbonate rocks decrease with the increase of acid treatment duration and temperature. The changes of acrid rock mechanics parameters have a significant impact on fracture initiation pressure, and the evolution of elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio is the main controlling factor for fracture initiation pressure. Under the same reservoir temperature, long acid treatment duration could enlarge acid swept area and lower fracture initiation pressure; under the same acid treatment duration, high reservoir temperature strengthen rock dissolution by acid, and the fracture initiation pressure has a slight increase.

Abstract:It is of great significance to study the mechanical properties of rock fracture for the stability of rock engineering projects. The mechanical properties, including the normal compression and shear properties of rock fracture, are studied by a series of shear tests considering the effect of lateral stress using the self-developed true triaxial test apparatus. The test results show that the initial normal stiffness and the maximum normal closure value of rock fracture increase with the increase of lateral stress, and the peak shear strength and the peak dilatancy angle increase with the increase of lateral stress, whereas the peak shear displacement decreases with the increase of lateral stress. Considering the effect of lateral stress, the improved normal loading model, peak shear strength model and peak dilatancy angle model of rock fracture are established. Using the equivalent parameters of rock fracture obtained based on the test, the hydro-mechanical coupling analysis considering lateral stress is carried out for an underground water sealed oil storage cavern project. It can be concluded that with the increase of lateral stress, the displacement of surrounding rock decreases, and the surrounding rock tends to be more stable.

Abstract:Carbonate outcrops were taken from Ma 51 sub-member in the Lower Paleozoic in the Yan'an gas field to conduct true tri-axial hydraulic fracturing experiments with water, liquid CO2 and supercritical CO2. CT scan was applied to analyze initiation and propagation laws of hydraulic fractures in carbonate rocks. The experiments show that supercritical CO2 has low viscosity, strong diffusivity and large filtration during fracturing, which is more liable to increase pore pressure of rocks around wellbore and decrease breakdown pressure of carbonate rocks. However, it would cost much more volume of supercritical CO2 than water to fracture rocks since the former increases the wellbore pressure more slowly during fracturing. For carbonate rocks with few natural fractures, tensional fractures are generated by fracturing with water and liquid CO2, and these fractures propagate along the maximum horizontal principal stress direction; while fracturing with supercritical CO2 can form shear fractures, whose morphology is rarely influenced by horizontal stress difference. Besides, the angle between propagation direction of these shear fractures near the wellbore and the maximum horizontal principal stress is 45°, and the fractures would gradually turn to propagate along the maximum horizontal principal stress when they extend to a certain distance from the wellbore, leading to an increase of fracture tortuosity compared with the former. For carbonate rocks with well-developed natural fractures, fracturing with fresh water is conducive to connect natural fractures with low approaching angle and form stepped fractures with simple morphology. The key to forming complex fractures after fracturing carbonate rocks is to connect the natural fractures with high approaching angle. It is easier for liquid CO2 with low viscosity to realize such connection. Multi-directional fractures with relatively complex morphology would be formed after fracturing with liquid CO2.

Abstract:There are abundant oil and gas resources in carbonate reservoirs of Tarim Basin, and more than 90% come from fractured-caved carbonate. These fractured-caved reservoirs are formed by the superposition of large fracture zone and karstification. The fractured-caved bodies generally appear in strips along the fracture zone and are distributed irregularly in vertical and horizontal directions. In addition, the ultra-deep burial (6500-7500m) leads to strong heterogeneity of the reservoirs. This paper presents using horizontal wells to cross the fractured-caved bodies is an effective means to improve the economic profit of oil and gas field development. Based on geomechanical study, the development mechanism of high-quality fractured-caved bodies can be determined, the contradiction between multiple fractured-caved bodies and safe drilling can be solved, and the reservoir stimulation plan can be optimized. The study can provide quantitative data basis for well trajectory optimization, prediction of drilling safety window, determination of maximum build-up slope in deviated section, how to use one well to cross multiple fractured-caved bodies and optimization of reservoir stimulation program. The results show that the ultra-deep carbonate reservoirs are affected by four factors: faults, fractures, irregular karst and in-situ stress, resulting in strong heterogeneity and anisotropy of reservoir. Therefore, the probability of high-quality fractured-caved bodies encountered by well trajectory drilling in different directions and depths is different, and the stability of wellbore in different directions and deviation is also different. When the drilling trajectory crossed the fault zone, it experienced a large range of in-situ stress, so the stimulation effect varied greatly in different well sections. The geomechanical study of ultra-deep carbonate reservoirs shows that the strike of the fault is similar to the present in-situ stress, and it is easier to develop high-quality fractured-caved bodies in relatively weak stress environment. Through the study of the relationship between fracture system and in-situ stress, it provides a method to optimize the well trajectory in consideration of both high-quality reservoir and drilling engineering safety. On the basis of optimizing the best well trajectory, it can predict the safe drilling window more accurately, guide drilling through multiple fractured-caved bodies as much as possible, and implement reservoir stimulation effectively, laid a foundation for high-quality and high-yield drilling. So far, three carbonate reservoir oilfields’ 3D stress modelling have been completed and applied to well placement, drilling and development. The average oil production per well exceeds 300 tons under 6mm nozzle conditions.

Abstract:To investigate the impact of CO 2 on rocks during the whole period of CO 2 pre-pad energized fracturing operation for thin interbedded shale reservoir, including fracturing and well shut-in, a series of laboratory triaxial fracturing experiments and CO 2 soaking experiments were conducted on thin interbedded shale (from Jimsar formations). In these experiments, combined with computed tomography (CT), the effect of fracturing fluid, horizontal principal stress difference, vertical principal stress, and natural fractures on fracture morphology were studied respectively. And based on X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) experiments, the dissolution of minerals and the changes of pore structure before and after CO 2 soaking were analyzed. The results of the fracturing experiment show that the bedding planes are easy to be opened by low viscosity of CO 2 and the longitudinal fractures intersect with bedding planes to build a complex fracture network. During CO 2 fracturing of thin interbedded shale, the horizontal principal stress difference is no longer a crucial factor to form a complex fracture network, but the vertical stress and natural fractures play important roles. And the soaking experiments indicate that the main dissolved mineral is carbonate whose dissolution ratio can reach 45.2% after soaking for 5 days, leading to the expansion of original pores or the exposure of new pores.

Abstract:Acid fracturing is the most effective stimulation method to obtain a high production of carbonate formation which is an important oil and gas resource for China to meet the increase in demand for energy. However, the tough reservoir characteristics of carbonate formation, deeply buried, high pressure and temperature and complex reservoir space, cause the mechanism of acid fracturing ambiguous. Therefore, a series of experiments are conducted on outcrop cores and downhole cores to study the effect of clean acid and gelled acid on carbonate formation. Moreover, the 3D scanner is used to depict the uneven surface of acid etched fracture. The results of rock mechanics experiments indicate that acidizing decreases rock mechanics properties: gelled acid reduces compression strength and Poisson's ratio, whereas, clean acid lowers tensile strength and Young's modulus. Furthermore, 3D scanning digital images reveal that the reaction between acid and rock matrix results in two main surface etching patterns: rough etching pattern is generated by clean acid, but channel etching pattern is created by gelled acid. Based on the results of fracture conductivity experiments, acid etched fracture conductivity depends on surface etching pattern and mineral content. Channel etching and high calcite content are conducive to a high fracture conductivity. In addition, acid etched fracture propagation behavior is affected by acid type and natural fractures. Clean acid causes a small and narrow acid affected area, but gelled acid results in a larger and broader one. Therefore, fracture conductivity and fracture propagation behavior are two important factors to evaluate the effectiveness of acid fracturing.

Abstract:The tight gas reservoir in the fifth member of the Xujiahe formation contains heterogeneous interlayers of sandstone and shale that are low in both porosity and permeability. Elastic characteristics of sandstone and shale are analyzed in this study based on petrophysics tests. The tests indicate that sandstone and mudstone samples have different stress-strain relationships. The rock tends to exhibit elastic-plastic deformation. The compressive strength correlates with confinement pressure and elastic modulus. The results based on thin-bed log interpretation match dynamic Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio predicted by theory. The compressive strength is calculated from density, elastic impedance, and clay contents. The tensile strength is calibrated using compressive strength. Shear strength is calculated with an empirical formula. Finally, log interpretation of rock mechanical properties is performed on the fifth member of the Xujiahe formation. Natural fractures in downhole cores and rock microscopic failure in the samples in the cross section demonstrate that tensile fractures were primarily observed in sandstone, and shear fractures can be observed in both mudstone and sandstone. Based on different elasticity and plasticity of different rocks, as well as the characteristics of natural fractures, a fracture propagation model was built.

Abstract:How to effectively and cleanly exploit unconventional resources is currently being widely concerned. Due to the unavoidable limitations of water-based fracturing, CO2 and N2 etc., are regarded as alternative fluids for some specific reservoirs such as the arid area or high clay swelling formation. To investigate the characteristics of fracture induced by nonaqueous fluid in unconventional tight formation, fracturing experiments on tight sandstone using different fluid of water, N2, liquid CO2(L-CO2) and supercritical CO2(SC-CO2) were conducted. A novel fracture analysis approach based on CT scanning is also proposed to quantitatively analyze the micromorphology of fractures including fracture network pattern, fractal dimension (FD), aperture, area ratio (AR) and fracture volume etc. Results show that water and N2 can only induce a relatively simple fracture pattern. Whereas, fractures induced by CO2-based fluid have more complex fracture geometry with many fracture branches and various propagation orientations. Quantitative analysis based on image processing and fracture reconstruction algorithm indicates that the CO2-based fluid has up to 4.4 times larger fracture-induced capacity and can create fracture with up to 2.6 times higher complexity and 23.4% higher roughness than that generated by water-based fracturing. Comparing to SC-CO2, L-CO2 and water, N2 has the least fracture-induced capacity (83% of water) and produces more smooth and uniform fractures. On the other hand, the distributions of deviation angle suggest that fracture propagation is not only influenced by stress state, but also significantly affected by the original bedding plane. This experimental study proposes a precise and effective approach for fracture characteristic quantification, which can be further implemented into fracture simulation model. It also provides theoretical reference and guidance for field operation of waterless fracturing in development of unconventional oil and gas.

Abstract:The types of underground paleocarbonate reservoirs in Ordos Basin, China are complex and show a high filling degree as a whole. In the process of acid fracturing, there are many problems, such as unclear understanding of the fracture propagation and extension law of volume acid fracturing, no relevant experimental data on the conductivity of acid corrosion fracture formed after large displacement and large liquid injection, and lack of theoretical basis for volume acid fracturing design. In order to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of acid fracturing design of such reservoirs, taking MW-X well in Ordos Basin as an example, this paper analyzes the influence law of different factors on the formation of complex fracture network by establishing fracture extension model and judgment model of the encounter between hydraulic fractures and natural fractures. Finally, by establishing the acid flow reaction model and productivity prediction model in the fracture, the influence of different factors on the acid fracturing effect is analyzed, and then the volumetric acid fracturing process parameters are optimized.

Abstract:The complexity and heterogeneity of pore structures in carbonate reservoirs pose significant challenges for accurately characterizing the influence of different pore micro-parameters on reservoir physical properties. Drawing upon the principles of fractal geometry theory applied to reservoir rocks, this study combines mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) T2 spectrum methods to explore the relationship between the fractal dimension and micro-parameters of pore throats at various scales. Additionally, it clarifies how the fractal dimension of pores at different scales impacts reservoir physical properties. Moreover, a permeability prediction model that incorporates fractal dimensions is developed. The findings demonstrate that the fractal dimension effectively captures the complexity and multi-scale nature of reservoir microstructures, leading to higher reliability in predicting permeability when using the model incorporating the fractal dimension. It provides a theoretical basis for predicting the absolute permeability of fractured carbonate rocks in dual media.

Influence of Rock Mineralogy on Reactive Fracture Evolution in Carbonate-Rich Caprocks

Abstract:Fractures present environmental risks for subsurface engineering activities, such as geologic storage of greenhouse gases, because of the possibility of unwanted upward fluid migration. The risks of fluid leakage may be exacerbated if fractures are subjected to physical and chemical perturbations that alter their geometry. This study investigated this by constructing a 2D fracture model to numerically simulate fluid flow, acid-driven reactions, and mechanical deformation. Three rock mineralogies were simulated: a limestone with 100% calcite, a limestone with 68% calcite, and a banded shale with 34% calcite. One might expect transmissivity to increase fastest for rocks with more calcite due to its high solubility and fast reaction rate. Yet, results show that initially transmissivity increases fastest for rocks with less calcite because of their ability to deliver unbuffered-acid downstream faster. Moreover, less reactive minerals become persistent asperities that sustain mechanical support within the fracture. However, later in the simulations, the spatial pattern of less reactive mineral, not abundance, controls transmissivity evolution. Results show that a banded mineral pattern creates persistent bottlenecks, prevents channelization, and stabilizes transmissivity. For sites for geologic storage of CO2 that have carbonate caprocks, banded mineral variation may limit reactive evolution of fracture transmissivity and increase storage reliability.

Abstract:Supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO 2 ) fracturing has emerged as a promising non-blasting rock fracturing method within the carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) portfolio. Understanding the evolution of global fracture network, which is a complex and dynamic process, is essential for enhancing fracturing effectiveness. However, traditional research methods have been inadequate for dynamically and quantitatively tracking and characterizing the development of these networks. In this study, SC-CO 2 fracturing experiments and active source acoustic emission monitoring tests were conducted under three different confining pressures (CPs) caused by the reverse conditions at different burial depths. The characteristic parameters of global fracture network evolution were analyzed using coda wave signals, including frequency, transmissivity, relative velocity ( dv/v ), and decorrelation coefficient ( DC ). The relationships between these parameters and the combined effects of CPs and fracturing pressure were established, and the mechanisms of global fracture network evolution were discussed. The results indicate that the microscopic mechanism of SC-CO 2 fracturing involves fissure tip extension driven by expansional energy from SC-CO 2 phase transition, which is influenced by the compression-shear effect induced by CPs. Additionally, the compression-shear effect governs the developmental rate and direction of the global fracture network, determining the final failure pattern. The combined influence of CPs and fracturing pressure on all investigated parameters was linked to an increase in coda wave travel time, resulting in a decay trend in frequency, transmissivity, and dv/v , while the DC exhibited an increasing trend. This study introduces a novel method for monitoring the SC-CO 2 fracturing process, enhances the quantitative characterization of global fracture network evolution, and promotes the application of SC-CO 2 fracturing in situ.

Abstract:In this study, the performance of water-based fracturing fluids and supercritical CO2 in three types of representative reservoirs (sandstone, conglomerate, and shale) was investigated. The results showed that there are differences in fracture initiation pressures in different rocks, but the fracture initiation pressure of supercritical CO2 is lower than that of water regardless of the rock type. In sandstone reservoirs, supercritical CO2 induced more complex fractures than water, resulting in branching fractures. In conglomerate reservoirs, hydraulic fractures pass through the conglomerate and are flatter, whereas supercritical CO2 fractures pass through or around the conglomerate, and thus the fractures are more tortuous. Gravel stopped the fracture extension in both conditions. In shale reservoirs, supercritical CO2 can communicate natural fractures more effectively than water, thereby increasing the effective transformation volume. The study provides theoretical guidance for reservoir adaptation of supercritical CO2 fracturing.

Abstract:According to the damage evolution model of rock mass under stress-seepage coupling effect, the representative element theory is employed to describe the change law of rock mesostructure. Based on the theory of elasticity and Weibull distribution, the statistical damage constitutive model of rock mass and the finite element numerical algorithm are established, by adopting the COMSOL Multiphysics numerical software and MATLAB program. Besides, the validity of the statistical damage constitutive model of rock mass is verified by the triaxial compression test. Besides, the hydraulic fracturing processes of rock mass under equal and unequal in situ stresses are numerically simulated, and the mechanical behavior of rock mass during hydraulic fracturing in complex underground environment is also studied. Under the condition of equal in situ stress, the stress distribution of surrounding rock of circular hole is annular, which is similar to the elastic stress distribution of surrounding rock. Under the condition of unequal in situ stress, the stress distribution tends to be circular with the increase of lateral pressure coefficient, and the stress distribution along the diagonal decreases. The simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical results, which indicates that the damage mechanical model and the numerical model have correlation and certain accuracy. By analyzing the size and direction of horizontal in situ stress, the shape and extension direction of cracks are judged, which provides an important theoretical basis for water inrush prediction and engineering protection.

Abstract:Exploration and development practices have proved that fracturability evaluation is the primary basis for sucessful fracturing operations. Current studies mainly rely on using traditional physical parameters to evaluate shale fracturability. However, fracture morphology and the extension of natural fractures during fracturing are also crucial for shale fracturability evaluation. In this study, the correlations among factors and rock fracture complexity and natural fracture opening degree were analyzed through 40 sets of related experiments, proposing a new method for shale fracturability evaluation that considers Young's Modulus, shear expansion angle, residual strain, approach angle, and stress variance coefficient. Finally, taking the shale gas field in the Sichuan Basin as an example, a comprehensive evaluation model of shale fracturability was established by using the gray correlation method combined with the core experimental data. One well was selected to compare and analyze the fracturability profile with the stimulated reservoir volume. The results show thatthe peak strain has the most significant influence on the shale fracture complexity, followed by the shear expansion angle and Young's Modulus. The approach angle and the stress difference coefficient affect the degree of natural fracture opening at the same time. The model is accurate because the fractureability values match the study block's stimulated reservoir volume data. This new method of shale fractureability evaluation offers important technology for predicting the fractureability of shale gas reservoirs and optimizing operation schemes.

Abstract:Currently, the inability to master the damage law of reservoir rock is one of the major obstacles to the efficient development of geological resources using supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2), and the key issue is the unknown influence mechanism of mineral dissolution on the altered reservoir strength. Therefore, the aim of this study was to reveal the influence mechanism of mineralogy on rock mechanical behaviour by conducting a SC-CO2 dynamic alteration study. By analysing the correlation between mineral evolution and mechanical damage, the controlling effect of insoluble minerals on altered strength and the dominant effect of the highest reaction order minerals on damage rate were revealed. Under the dynamic alteration effect, the dissolution of soluble minerals is weakened and the spallation of insoluble minerals is promoted. An evaluation index, the ISR, was proposed to show significantly positive correlation with the altered strength, whose effect is similar to the content of insoluble minerals. A modification method for the alteration damage laws of different types of rocks was proposed, indicating that the mechanical damage should be considered more severe for sandstone and granite, and slighter for marble. On this basis, the mineral characteristics of the rocks, which can be severely damaged under SC-CO2 alteration, are preliminarily proposed.

Abstract:Damage tensors in rock are related to joint structure within the rock mass which can be described by fractal geometry. Damage propagation in rock mass, found from rock sample tests was described in terms of fractal elements. This paper uses fractal dimension analysis to describe the fractures in rock mass. Fractal geometry is proposed as a novel method to predict propagation of damage in rock.

Abstract:Tight sandstone has a tight structure and low natural production capacity, usually requiring the use of fracturing technology to achieve industrial production. Supercritical CO 2 fracturing has attracted much attention due to its clean and efficient properties. In this paper, using the principles of damage mechanics, the crack propagation law during supercritical CO 2 fracturing was studied by using numerical methods. The influence of different factors on the fracture propagation patterns is analyzed. Results indicate that supercritical CO 2 fracturing can form complex fracture distribution patterns. This mode is divided into three different stages: slow fracture propagation, rapid fracture propagation, and rigid fracture propagation. In addition, highly heterogeneous formations generate more secondary fractures but limit their expansion.
