Abstract:Magnesium implants are recently considered favorable compared to ordinary stainless steel, titanium, and cobalt-chromium implants due to their unique properties, including stress shielding prevention, bone-like properties, and biodegradability. Besides, Hydroxyapatite is used in biocomposites as a reinforcement owing to bioactivity and osteo-like characteristics. In the present paper, Hydroxyapatite reinforced pure magnesium composite has been made by the stir casting method. SEM, EDS, tensile and compressive testing has been used to characterize the powder distribution and mechanical properties. As a tissue engineering material with anti-corrosion abilities, polycaprolactone fibers with an average diameter of 670 nm have been coated on the surface after the composite sample has been treated with HNO 3 . Subsequently, potentiodynamic polarization and in vitro biodegradation tests have been performed on the samples in the SBF medium. A significant reduction in corrosion rate in the fiber-coated magnesium composite sample to 4.5 mm/year after 72 h of immersion (70% decrease compared to bare ones) can be seen due to the protection of the fiber layer, the absorbed Ca-P products, and the acid-treated surface. Application of electrospun polycaprolactone fibers coating on Mg/HA composite can make it applicable for use in the field of bioimplants.
