Abstract:We demonstrate a gain-switched thulium fiber laser that can be continuously tuned over 140 nm, while maintaining stable nanosecond single-pulse operation. To the best of our knowledge, this system represents the broadest tuning range for a gain-switched fiber laser. The system simplicity and wideband wavelength tunability combined with the ability to control the temporal characteristics of the gain-switched pulses mean this is a versatile source highly suited to a wide range of applications in the eye-safe region of the infrared, including spectroscopy, sensing and material processing, as well as being a practical seed source for pumping nonlinear processes.

Abstract:Here, we firstly utilize a newly explored 1.6 μm harmonic dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) pulses as a pump source to realize a highly efficient gain-switched thulium fiber laser at 1719.52 nm. The 1.6 μm DSR pulses with a fundamental repetition rate of 360 kHz were produced from a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) ring cavity, which directly output high power mode-locking pulses due to freedom of soliton-area limitation and pulse breaking. The harmonic mode-locking (HML) operation was achieved by properly adjusting the polarization controllers (PCs). The thulium fiber laser cavity constructed by a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) pair was resonantly (in-band) pumped by the 1.6 μm harmonic DSR pulses. Taking the merit of the strong absorption of Tm3+ at 1.6 μm and the laser cavity having a low insert loss, the 1.7 μm gain-switched fiber laser with the maximum repetition rate of 2.16 MHz, corresponding to the average power of 2.826 W and the pulse energy of 1.33 μJ, was obtained at a high slope efficiency of about 71.9%. The maximum output power could exceed 3 W with a high slope efficiency of over 70%, which is the record in 1.7 μm all-fiber pulsed thulium lasers.

Abstract:An ultra-short wavelength operation of Tm-doped all fiber laser based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) was developed. A bi-directional pump configuration for the ultra-short wavelength operation was designed and investigated for the first time. the laser yielded 3.15W of continuous-wave output at 1706.75nm with a narrow-linewidth of ~50pm and a maximum slope efficiency of 42.1%. The dependencies of the slope efficiencies and pump threshold of the laser versus the length of active fiber and reflectivity of the output mirror (FBG) were investigated in detail. An experimental comparative study between two Thulium-doped fiber lasers (TDFLs) with two different pumping configuration(forward unidirectional pumping and bidirectional pumping) was presented. It is indisputable that the development of 1.7μm silicate fiber lasers with Watt-level output power open up a number of heart-stirring and tempting application windows.

Abstract:Watts-level ultra-short wavelength operation of a Tm-doped all fiber laser was developed by using a 1550 nm Er-doped fiber laser pump source and a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The laser yielded 1.28 W of continuous-wave output at 1707.01 nm with a narrow linewidth of ~44 pm by means of a 20 cm Tm-doped fiber. The dependencies of the slope efficiencies and pump threshold of the Tm-doped fiber laser versus the length of active fiber and reflectivity of the output mirror (FBG) were investigated in detail, in which the maximum average slope efficiency was 36.1%. There is no doubt that this all fiber laser will be a perfect pump source for mid-IR laser output.
3 W Narrow-Linewidth Ultra-Short Wavelength Operation Near 1707 Nm in Thulium-Doped Silica Fiber Laser with Bidirectional Pumping

Abstract:We have developed an ultra-short wavelength operation of all-fiber Tm-doped laser system, in which the laser system was structured in a FBGs based linear cavity with FBG associated bidirectional pump mechanism at 1550 nm. The laser yielded 3.15 W of continuous-wave output at 1706.75 nm with a narrow-linewidth of ~50 pm. A high reflectivity FBG (HR-FBG) at 1550 nm was used to reflect the residual pump light and achieve the bidirectional pump mechanism. The maximum slope efficiency was improved from 23.2% without HR-FBG to 42.1% with HR-FBG at 1550 nm and the lowest pump threshold was reduced from 1.6 to 0.8 W accordingly. In the experiment, we have also investigated the dependencies of the slope efficiencies and pump threshold of the laser versus the length of active fiber and reflectivity of the output mirror (FBG) in detail. It is indisputable that the development of 1.7 μm silicate fiber lasers with Watt-level output power will open up a number of promising application windows.

Abstract:A thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) with a dual-active cavity and a directly linked three-coupler triple-ring filter is designed and demonstrated. Its operational principle is analyzed, and a corresponding experimental setup is built. Eleven single-wavelength laser outputs with a single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) output near 2 μm are obtained. The laser output covers a wavelength range from 1933.95 nm to 1971.76 nm, with a continuous switchable output range of 37.81 nm and a minimum center wavelength interval of 0.22 nm. The optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the output laser within the tuning range is >48.53 dB, and its maximum OSNR is 70.24 dB. The minimum wavelength fluctuation is 0.03 nm, and the power fluctuation is between 0.15 and 2.61 dB. A single wavelength with a center wavelength of 1933.95 nm is monitored for 75 min, and the radio-frequency spectrum is scanned 27 times within the frequency range of 0 to 400 MHz. The results demonstrate that the TDFL can operate continuously and stably in an SLM state. The linewidth and linewidth fluctuation of the TDFL are measured, and the minimum linewidth, corresponding to a measurement time of 0.001 s, is 65.14 kHz. The experimental results show that the proposed TDFL has a high OSNR and excellent wavelength-switching ability, and its SLM operation is very stable.

Abstract:In this study, a kilowatt-level high-efficiency narrow-linewidth all-fiber Tm3+-doped continuous-wave laser operating at 1.95 μm is demonstrated. Benefitting from an advanced boost design of a two-stage main amplifier, it not only effectively manages heat dissipation resulting from the high pump-induced quantum defect but also realizes the controlled extraction of optical gain and improves the optical conversion efficiency. Finally, this laser system has realized an output power of 1018 W, a linewidth of 3.8 GHz, and a slope efficiency of 60.0% simultaneously. Moreover, a high optical signal-to-noise ratio of over 45 dB and excellent beam quality of M2 factors 1.19 are obtained. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the narrowest linewidth and highest slope efficiency achieved in a kilowatt-level Tm3+-doped fiber laser. Such a high-performance laser is ideally suited for mid-infrared generation and remote sensing applications.

Abstract:A gain-switched Yb-doped pulse fiber laser which was periodically pumped by a pulsed Laser Diode(LD) centering at wavelength of 975 nm was reported.The pulsed Yb fiber laser was composed of a piece of Yb doped double cladding gain fiber and a pair of fiber Bragg gratings.Under pump power of 20 W and pulse duration of 2.4 μs at repetition rate of 50 kHz,stable laser pulse trains were obtained at 1 060 nm with pulse duration of 100 ns.The shot energy of every pulse was measured up to 20 μJ.Using this pulsed Yb fiber laser as the seed,a maser-oscillator power amplifier(MOPA) structured high power Yb laser was constructed with pulse energy exceeding 200 μJ.The slope efficiency of the MOPA was about 60%.

Abstract:Fiber lasers, owing to the high beam quality and super robustness, are widely used in fields from optical communications, fiber sensing, biomedicine to material processing. The use of glass fibers as the gain medium has, however, posed a strong obstacle for improving efficiency and, especially, achieving efficient lasing action in the mid-infrared (MIR) region, because of the relatively large nonradiative energy loss. Here, the fabrication of a Tm3+-doped tellurate glass-ceramic (GC) fiber is demonstrated, which enables enhanced lasing action at approximate to 2 mu m. Compared with the as-prepared fiber, the optical conversion efficiency of GC fiber is increased from 8.8% to 14.1%. The microstructure and spectral characterization analyses suggest that the improvement of the laser performance in GC fiber is induced by the significant change of the local environment surrounding Tm3+ ions due to the formation of nanocrystals within the glass fibers. Moreover, the developed GC fiber also enables Q-switched pulsed laser output at approximate to 2 mu m with a pulse energy of 3.2 J and pulse width of 4.1 ns. The results demonstrated here may have strong implications in the development of MIR fiber lasers and the applications of GC fibers in MIR photonics.
1.7 μm Tm-doped continue-wave and pulse fibre laser using a modulated pump based on variable pulse generated mechanisms

Abstract:A 1.7 μm Tm-doped continue-wave and pulse fiber laser based on variable pulse generated mechanisms is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The modulated pump was used to generate pulses in the cavity by switching mechanisms easily (gain-switched, self-saturable absorber and active mode-locking via pump modulation (AMPM)). In the laser scheme, a 1.55 μm amplified optically modulated signal generator was used as a homemade pump, including a semiconductor laser, a pulse signal driver and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). A 3-m long thulium-doped fiber (TDF) was pumped to obtained gain which covered 1.7 µm band. A Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) is employed as a spectrum filter. Using the proposed scheme, we achieved the laser with a central wavelength of 1727.92 nm. The laser had a high Side-Mode Suppression Ratio (SMSR) of 59 dB and a 3 dB linewidth of 0.18 nm. Additionally, we modulated the pump, and the pulse train with a repetition rate from 10 kHz to100 kHz based on gain-switched mechanism was obtained. Aim to increase the repetition rate, the generation of self-mode-locked pulses with a repetition rate of 11.39 MHz was observed associating with a self-saturable absorber using a CW pump. Moreover, We adjusted the modulated frequency of pump to match with the free spectral range of the cavity, the pulse train with repetition rate of 11.39 MHz was obtained with higher signal power based on AMPM, and the serval order harmonic mode-locking states with repetition rate from 22.78 MHz to 45.56 MHz were demonstrated with the appropriate pump frequency.

Abstract:A high-powered millijoule pulse energy Tm3+-doped fiber amplifier seeded with a Q-switched operation of Tm (4 at.-%), Ho (0.4 at.-%):YVO4 laser is reported. The output characteristics of the amplified laser are studied at the coupled powers of 0.266, 1.24, and 2.65 W. Maximum output power up to 15.7 W is at 10-kHz repetition rate. Nonlinear effects are not observed from the emitting spectrum and the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the pulse duration is reduced from 40.1 to 25.9 ns at 1.57-mJ pulse energy. The beam quality factor M-x(2) = 1.9 +/- 0.03, M-y(2) = 2.1 +/- 0.02 at the output power of 14.5 W is measured using the traveling knife-edge method.

Abstract:We demonstrate a pulsed Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating at 3.75 μm based on the gain-switching scheme. A diffraction grating is introduced as a wavelength selection component to enable stable lasing in this long-wavelength region that deviates from the emission peak of 4F9/2→4I9/2 transition in Er3+. Different from the conventional gain-switching behavior where the pulse repetition frequency of the output laser is same as the that of the pump, the gain-switched laser demonstrated here shows a variable pulse repetition frequency, which accounts for 1/n (n = 4, 3, 2) of the pump pulse repetition frequency, in response to the 1950 nm pump power. The output pulse characteristics, including average output power, repetition frequency, pulse duration, and peak power, are investigated in detail. Over 200 mW average output power at 3.75 μm was obtained at 12 W of 1950 nm pump power. This work demonstrates that the Er-doped ZBLAN fiber laser, in combination with gain-switched scheme, is a feasible and promising approach to generate powerful pulsed emission > 3.7 μm.

Abstract:In this paper, TiCT MXene prepared by LiF/HCl etching method was spin-coated on glass substrate and sapphire substrate as the saturable absorber (SA), and the MXene SA is combined with Yb: LuAG single crystal fiber (SCF) for the first time to achieve a 1.05 µm passively Q-switched pulsed laser output with the average power, pulse width, and repetition frequency of 1.989 W, 149.6 ns, and 365.44 kHz, respectively, which is the highest average power ever reported for passively Q-switched SCF pulsed lasers. This work enriches the research on SCF pulsed lasers and provides a feasible approach for achieving high-power all-solid-state pulsed lasers.

Abstract:We demonstrated a pulsed ytterbium all-fiber laser passively <math display="inline"> <mi>Q</mi> </math> -switched using excited-state absorption of thulium fiber and a mode-field-area mismatch. The absorption cross section of the excited state <math display="inline"> <msup> <mi></mi> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mrow> <msub> <mi>F</mi> <mn>4</mn> </msub> </mrow> </math> was measured and determined to be the key factor inducing pulsing, and it was much higher than that of the ground state <math display="inline"> <msup> <mi></mi> <mn>3</mn> </msup> <mrow> <msub> <mi>H</mi> <mn>6</mn> </msub> </mrow> </math> over 0.95–1.15 µm. Abstract:We demonstrate a 1.7 µm femtosecond Tm-doped fiber laser system featuring an all-polarization-maintaining architecture. The seed oscillator is mode-locked by carbon nanotubes and delivers stable pulse centered at 1787.6 nm. With two backward pumped amplifiers, the average power of the laser is amplified to ∼458 mW. Employing proper dispersion management in an all-fiber chirped pulse amplification scheme and the soliton compression effect, we obtained a femtosecond pulse of 206 fs with a pulse energy of 8.8 nJ at a repetition rate of ∼52 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of 1.7 µm femtosecond laser based on a thulium-doped oscillator with all-polarization-maintaining architecture.
High-power single-stage thulium-doped superfluorescent fiber source

Abstract:In this paper, we report a high-power thulium (Tm)-doped superfluorescent fiber source (SFS) in the 2-μm spectral region. The SFS is based on double angle-cleaved facet operation and uses a simple single-stage geometry. The copropagating amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) yields a maximum output of 20.7 W at a center wavelength of 1,960.7 nm, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ~45 nm. The counterpropagating ASE yields a maximum output of 25.2 W at a center wavelength of 1,948.2 nm, with a FWHM of ~50 nm. The maximum combined output of the SFS is as much as 45.9 W, which corresponds to a slope efficiency of 38.9 %. In addition, a model of the ~2 μm SFS in Tm-doped silica fibers pumped at ~790 nm is developed, and the influence of fiber length and end-facet reflectivity on the ASE output performance and the parasitic lasing threshold are studied numerically.

Abstract:Thulium-doped fiber lasers with an emission wavelength around 2 μm have drawn increasing attention for applications in fundamental and life sciences [1], [2]. It has recently been identified, that the utilization of long wavelength drivers is beneficial for the parametric downconversion into the molecular fingerprint region (2-20 μm wavelength), since they can effectively use conveniently available non-oxide crystals with high conversion efficiency to address the wavelength region beyond 5 μm, which is difficult with today’s well matured 1 μm drivers [3], [4]. Transferring these results into an application driven context in medical and life sciences requires a compact design and flexibility of the driving source to serve a huge audience. Addressing the mid infrared fingerprint region via parametric downconversion requires both, short pulses and moderate peak power to ensure a good spectral coverage. To fulfill these requirements chirped pulse amplifiers use bulky post compression schemes, which makes them not well suited for this field of application. In this work we propose a nonlinear fiber amplifier, which has the potential to drastically shrink the footprint of the driving source, by combining both compression and amplification in a single fiber. This will ultimately enable for high-power shoebox size laser sources in the molecular fingerprint region.
Upconversion-pumped femtosecond Thulium laser at 09 nm mode-locked by a GaSb-based SESAM

Abstract:We report on a femtosecond thulium laser operating on the 3 H 4 → 3 H 5 transition with upconversion pumping around 1 µm and passively mode-locked by a GaSb-based SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM). This laser employs a 6 at.% Tm:LiYF 4 laser crystal and a polarization maintaining Yb-fiber master oscillator power amplifier at 1043 nm as a pump source addressing the 3 F 4 → 3 F 2,3 excited-state absorption transition of Tm 3+ ions. In the continuous-wave regime, the Tm-laser generates 616 mW at ∼2313 nm with a slope efficiency of 10.0% (vs. the incident pump power) and a linear polarization (π). By implementing a type-I SESAM with a single ternary strained In 0.33 Ga 0.67 Sb quantum well embedded in GaSb for sustaining and stabilizing the soliton pulse shaping, the self-starting mode-locked Tm-laser generated pulses as short as 870 fs at a central wavelength of 2309.4 nm corresponding to an average output power of 208 mW at a pulse repetition rate of 105.08 MHz and excellent mode-locking stability. The output power was scaled to 450 mW at the expense of a longer pulse duration of 1.93 ps. The nonlinear parameters of the SESAM are also reported.
