Abstract:The catalytic dehydrogenation of methanol to give formaldehyde or formic acid, followed transfer hydrogenation and/or tandem (de)hydrogenation for the hydrogenation and C-methylation of carbonyls, offers advantages over traditional methods, including milder reaction conditions, improved safety, greater selectivity, and enhanced sustainability. This account provides a comprehensive overview of homogeneous catalysts reported for the transfer hydrogenation and C-methylation of various substrates, including ketones, chalcones, esters, and amides, using methanol as both a hydrogen donor and methylation source. Abstract:Cu-catalyzed enantioselective Cu-B(pin) addition to 1,1-disubstituted alkenes generating tertiary alkylcopper complexes that contain a quaternary stereogenic center, followed by the protonation of the complexes are presented. The resulting formal hydroboration products are formed in up to 98% yield and 99:1 enantiomeric ratio. The C-B(pin) moiety can be converted to a variety of useful functional groups. The method is applied to the enantioselective formal synthesis of (R)-ketoprofen. Detailed stereochemical models for enantioselective induction were elucidated through DFT calculations.

Abstract:AbstractReported is a highly enantioselective copper‐catalyzed Markovnikov protoboration of unactivated terminal alkenes. A variety of simple and abundant feedstock α‐olefins bearing a diverse array of functional groups and heterocyclic substituents can be used as substrates, and the reaction proceeds under mild reaction conditions at ambient temperature to provide expedient access to enantioenriched alkylboronic esters in good regioselectivity and with excellent enantiocontrol. Critical to the success of the protocol was the development and application of a novel, sterically hindered N‐heterocyclic carbene, (R,R,R,R)‐ANIPE, as the ligand for copper.

Abstract:A catalytic enantioselective addition reaction of silyl enol ethers to ketomalonate in the presence of C-2-symmetric copper(II) bisoxazolines as catalysts is presented; the reaction has been studied for different ligands and substrates under various reaction conditions and proceeds in good yield and with ee's > 90% and a procedure for the preparation of an optically active hydroxy acid is shown.

Abstract:Achieving direct C–H hydroxylation in a highly diastereo- and enantioselective manner is still a challenging goal. This reaction is mainly hindered by the potential for overoxidation of the generated alcohols as well as low stereoselectivity. Herein, we present an enantioselective benzylic C–H hydroxylation catalyzed by a manganese complex, H<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub>, and a carboxylic acid in 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. The benzylic alcohols were successfully furnished in excellent diastereoselectivities (up to >95:5) and enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee). Abstract:An efficient and versatile copper- or iron-catalyzed direct β-C(sp2)-H methylation of enamides by using dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as the methylating reagent has been developed. This methodology provides a convenient access to a wide range of β-C(sp2)-methylated enamides with exclusive E-selective control in moderate to good yields. Mechanistic studies reveal that methyl radical was involved in this transformation. Notably, the method is featured by using cheap copper or iron salts catalyst and simple procedure, commercially available methylation reagents, broad substrate scope, and excellent functional group tolerance.

Abstract:The use of chiral enol silanes in fundamental transformations such as Mukaiyama aldol, Michael, and Mannich reactions as well as Saegusa–Ito dehydrogenations has enabled the chemical synthesis of enantiopure natural products and valuable pharmaceuticals. However, accessing these intermediates in high enantiopurity has generally required the use of either stoichiometric chiral precursors or stoichiometric chiral reagents. We now describe a catalytic approach in which strongly acidic and confined imidodiphosphorimidates (IDPi) catalyze highly enantioselective interconversions of ketones and enol silanes. These "silicon–hydrogen exchange reactions" enable access to enantiopure enol silanes via tautomerizing σ-bond metatheses, either in a deprotosilylative desymmetrization of ketones with allyl silanes as the silicon source or in a protodesilylative kinetic resolution of racemic enol silanes with a carboxylic acid as the silyl acceptor.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:DMSO‐TsCl has been developed for direct methylthiolation of various electron‐rich heteroarenes (more than 40 examples) with high regioselectivity in moderate to excellent yields (up to 96%). Especially, pyrroles, furans and thiophenes can be efficiently mono‐methylthiolated. This practical method features scalable, metal‐free, mild conditions which are compatible with air and moisture. Several applications of methylthiolated product were demonstrated for the first time. Based on controlled experimental results, a plausible mechanism was proposed with two key intermediates involved in mechanism being detected by HRMS.

Abstract:Highly efficient copper‐catalyzed methoxylation of (hetero)aryl halides (X = Br and Cl) has been practically effected by using simple catalyst system copper(II) chloride/2,2‐bipyridine at 1‐mol% loading in an air‐tolerant procedure, showing functional group compatibility dependent on the electronic properties of aryl ring. An air‐tolerant, simple yet highly efficient copper‐catalyzed methoxylation of (hetero)aryl bromides and some activated chlorides has been developed by using copper(II) chloride/2,2‐bipyridine as catalyst precursor. A wide range of (hetero)aryl bromides and electron‐deficient chlorides could be efficiently methoxylated in good to excellent yields at 1‐mol% catalyst loading albeit showing a functional group compatibility dependent on the electronic properties of aryl ring. Applications of the practical protocol have been demonstrated in multigram synthesis of 3,4,5‐trimethoxytoluene.

This method has a broad scope and enables both the synthesis of isolable silanes and the conversion of crude products to chiral alcohols. Density functional theory calculations support a mechanism proceeding by hydrocupration followed by σ-bond metathesis with a hydrosilane.
