Abstract:<span><em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">In Governance, Domestic Change and Social Policy in China,</em>the contributing authors cover 7 different aspects of China from the Republic of China (ROC: 1912–49); Socialist China (PRC: 1949–79) and China under Reform and Economic Opening (PRC: 1978–2017) in seven chapters. The editors, Blanchard and Lin, introduced the book with a historical perspective. Contrary to the state-society dichotomy, the authors brought forward the interstices which suggest four major expectations in Chinese politics under comparative historical analysis: firstly, the conflicts as well as compromises between state actors and societal interests exist in different arenas. Secondly, organized social interests do not intrinsically seek autonomy or resist extension of state leverages over the operations of NGOs. Thirdly, "State in Society" matters as state power stems directly from the evolving social structures. Abstract:The rise of governance theory produces a discernible impact on political-administrative research and public administration practices in China. The introduction of such concepts as the state governance system and social governance indicates that governance has even become an official discourse in China. Since the inception of governance theory in China, a series of disputes have emerged in terms of the logical relationship between governance and good governance and the applicability of governance theory in China. Although these disputes exert a marginal effect on research on Chinese governance, a core issue regarding applicability reappears-tension between state building and governance-amid the present-day conflict between state governance and social governance, as well as, the current contention between official discourse and academic discourse. The future agenda of research on Chinese governance needs to revolve around this core, involving state governance, social governance, and the interaction between the two.

Abstract:Since the advent of “world history,” the world order has manifested itself theoretically, on the one hand, as international rights, and on the other, in actual practice, as power. This is exemplified in the Westphalian system. However, the Chinese approach (A New Model of Major Country Relations; A Community of Shared Future for Mankind, among others), which has been acclaimed as a constructive scheme for the new world order, is premised on transcending the Westphalian system; it is founded on a new type of civilization. The objective basis for this new type of civilization is China's socialist trajectory and the revival of China's pacifist tradition—these constitute the essential provisions of the Chinese approach to Global Governance.

Abstract:The outbreak of the financial crisis in Europe and America in 2008 was a landmark event in the history of global governance. It showed that the international system and governance mechanism was unable to adapt to the new global situation or solve the new challenges and problems caused by the rapid development of globalization. Global governance needs to explore new ideas, new paths and new strategies. However, to advance the transformation and development of global governance, in-depth cooperation by the great powers is not all that is involved; also inevitable are the redistribution of international power, interests and responsibilities, contradictory global concepts and fierce competition among the great powers. The next five to ten years are a key period both for the transformation and development of global governance and for China's full-scale rise. The latter is not only a process of China's integration into the global governance system but also a process whereby China influences global governance reform. China should seize the opportunity of the global governance crisis and changes to promote benign interaction between China and the world and should become an advocate, designer, shaper and leader in the improvement of the global governance system, focusing on the construction of national governance, the governance of East Asia, global governance and the governance of certain advantageous fields. Its active assumption of the historic mission of the new era of globalization has laid a solid foundation for China to grow into a great major country.

Abstract:The two-volume publication is one of the first attempts to systematically address both international climate change law and global climate change governance. It deals with international law and the multiple regulatory regimes reflecting fragmentation in the absence of a universal climate change regime. International climate change law, global climate governance and diplomacy are interrelated and extremely complex: The publications explore these areas from a variety of doctrinal, transdisciplinary and thematic perspectives. Volume I assesses the most pressing impacts of climate change on various international law regimes. The main focus lies on • international climate change law as a new international law discipline; • climate change and human rights; • climate change, international trade and investment law; • the law of the sea and sea level rise; • judicial review and international climate change litigation. other subjects such as mitigation regulation, natural resource management and climate-engineering. Abstract:This paper examines Chinese perspectives on global governance, an area in which China has increased substantially the depth and breadth of its participation. The paper attempts to draw a mainstream perspective to inform our understanding of some key aspects of China's foreign policy. It demonstrates that while China's statist preference appeals to some Third World countries, such a preference leads the country to clash with the West over how to tackle global issues collectively, particularly over humanitarian intervention. While the Chinese perspective is in the process of evolving and far from reaching maturity, it is questionable whether the global community led by the West would find the Westphalian practice that China embraces admirable.

Abstract:China is the subject of Western criticism for its supposed disregard of the rules-based international order. Such a charge implies that China is unilateralist. The aim in this study is to explain how China does in fact have a multilateral approach to international relations. China’s core idea of a community of shared future of humanity shows that it is aware of the need for a universal foundation for world order. The Research Report focuses on explaining the Chinese approach to multilateralism from its own internal perspective, with Chinese philosophy and history shaping its view of the nature of rules, rights, law, and of institutions which should shape relationships. A number of case studies show how the Chinese perspectives are implemented, such as with regards to development finance, infrastructure projects (especially the Belt and Road Initiative), shaping new international organisations (such as the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank), climate change, cyber-regulation and Chinese participation in the United Nations in the field of human rights and peacekeeping. Looking at critical Western opinion of this activity, we find speculation around Chinese motives. This is why a major emphasis is placed on a hermeneutic approach to China which explains how it sees its intentions. The heart of the Research Report is an exploration of the underlying Chinese philosophy of rulemaking, undertaken in a comparative perspective to show how far it resembles or differs from the Western philosophy of rulemaking.
