Abstract:Space solar power is an old idea. From its initial suggestion in the 1940s to the first practical concept by Dr. Peter Glaser in 1968, it has been analyzed, studied, and refined many times. Multiple government institutions, including NASA, JAXA, ESA, and CAST have invested significant funds into developing direct space solar power research. In parallel to these direct studies, considerable investment has also flowed into enabling technologies that serve as the cornerstone of current space solar power development concepts, including space solar panels, space hardware manufacturing, low-cost launch, wireless power transfer, robotic assembly, and swarm monitoring/control. In the last few years, space solar power concepts and studies have received increased funding, including non-governmental funding showing a strong positive growth trend. Multiple reports in 2021 and 2022, including from this author, have found that while space solar power has been technically feasible for decades, falling launch and hardware costs have only recently made it economically viable as well. Despite these findings, translation from economic feasibility to economic reality will require additional high-value investment. Sourcing these new funds requires investment context. This technical paper will present a state of the industry report on space solar power, including the total and source distribution of historical investments. It further contextualizes the investments in space solar power with the scale of investment in key technologies and their current technology readiness levels. The methodologies developed for this report and the data sourced are intended to serve as a catalyst, alongside industry feedback, to create a template for ongoing reporting of this growing market sub-sector and ultimately drive the full deployment of this technology.

Abstract:To address the future energy needs of an expanding population there is a growing need to find clean reliable sources of energy. The world population is expected to grow to 8.9 billion by 2050. The world’s energy demand is predicted to increase 44% by 2030. Currently, non-renewable resources such as oil, natural gas, and coal provide 85% of the world’s energy. Ground-based solar, wind, hydropower, and other renewable energy options are currently in place, but provide less than 1 percent of the world’s power. This percentage should grow but current renewable energy technology is limited and cannot provide enough power to match the growing need. Numerous scientists, engineers, and environmentalists have proposed space-based solar power as an alternative to traditional terrestrial photovoltaic collection. This paper focuses on one of the most promising other options; space based solar power (SBSP). SBSP has the potential to fulfil the planets growing energy needs in the coming centuries. The concept of SBSP is simple. Satellites are sent into space fitted with solar panels that can convert the sun’s rays into electricity. This electricity is then converted into microwaves and is then transmitted back to a receiver on the planet’s surface. The receiver on the planet’s surface converts the microwaves back into electricity where it can be fed into the power grid. Any company or country seeking to implement this technology faces certain legal and technical challenges. However the promise of SBSP is worth the cost of overcoming these challenges. This paper will focuses the technical concepts, need of SBSP, ,the history and developmentsin India and other countries. This paper will conclude its technical and historical overview with a review of possible solutions to the technical and financial challenges of SBSP. Finally, this paper will outline the current regime of international space law explaining how it applies to SBSP, while offering suggestions for how this

Abstract:Robust space development as usually envisioned by its advocates—the persistent and self-sustaining presence of humans and industry in space—is stymied by a fundamental paradox: for there to be a reason to develop space, there must already be people and industry there. To the extent that space development is a priority for any government or entity, this paradox must be surmounted. Space-based solar power (SBSP) production may represent the best way to overcome this paradox because of the technology's inherent scalability, rising demand for terrestrial clean baseload energy, and potential for self-funding. However, technical, regulatory, legal (domestic and international), and geopolitical challenges to deploying this technology on a large scale remain. In this article, the authors describe how SBSP development can potentially overcome the development paradox and offer an analysis of the challenges to this concept and potential approaches to resolving them. Furthermore, they provide a tentative research and commercialization roadmap for a private-public partnership for SBSP to deliver sustainable space development, identifying relative advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:Energy resources in outer space, also known as space energy, has been recognized as a promising supplement to conventional energy supplies on Earth, as well as an irreplaceable energy provision for future space explorations. A critical review is conducted in this paper, to identify the most potential space energy resources, to conclude on the current exploitation technologies and to suggest on the challenges and future directions. Space solar power station, also known as SSPS, is presented first as a well-known utilization of space energy, and we go through the international progress, evolution of the collection systems and the thermophotovoltaic systems. The main technical gaps hampering the practical application of SSPS is concluded then to inspire future investigations. Energy on Mars is presented afterwards as a representative ISRU(In Situ Resource Utilization)-type energy resource, and we select three potential resources on Mars worth exploitation: solar energy, geothermal energy and wind energy. A model describing the global solar irradiance on Mars is concluded, typical applications of geothermal energy is analyzed, the phase equilibrium of geothermal fluids is established and the wind turbine is designed. Furthermore, the review on energy on Moon is started with the discussion on lunar geology relevant with energy resources, and an example of feature detection using Convolutional Neural Networks is illustrated as an example to demonstrate the application of deep learning techniques in space energy exploitation. Solar energy is always taken into account in space activities, and we are more focusing on the discussion of Helium-3, a promising resource for nuclear fusion. The material for nuclear fission, Uranium, has also been detected on Moon. A is provided in the end with concluding remarks.

Abstract:The growing interest of governments and private companies in space exploration is pushing the development of highly efficient and low‐cost solar cells for applications in extraterrestrial environments. This review provides an overview of the pros and cons of both commercially available and new promising photovoltaic technologies for space applications. Solar cells (SCs) are the most ubiquitous and reliable energy generation systems for aerospace applications. Nowadays, III–V multijunction solar cells (MJSCs) represent the standard commercial technology for powering spacecraft, thanks to their high‐power conversion efficiency and certified reliability/stability while operating in orbit. Nevertheless, spacecraft companies are still using cheaper Si‐based SCs to amortize the launching costs of satellites. Moreover, in recent years, new SCs technologies based on Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) and perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as promising candidates for aerospace power systems, because of their appealing properties such as lightweightness, flexibility, cost‐effective manufacturing, and exceptional radiation resistance. In this review the current advancements and future challenges of SCs for aerospace applications are critically discussed. In particular, for each type of SC, a description of the device's architecture, a summary of its performance, and a quantitative assessment of the radiation resistance are presented. Finally, considering the high potential that 2D‐materials (such as graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, and transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides) have in improving both performance and stability of SCs, a brief overview of some important results concerning the influence of radiation on both 2D materials‐based devices and monolayer of 2D materials is also included.

Abstract:The rapid cost growth of flagship space missions has created a crisis for astronomy and planetary science. We have hit the funding wall. For the past 3 decades scientists have not had to think much about how space technology would change within their planning horizon. However, this time around enormous improvements in space infrastructure capabilities and, especially, costs are likely on the 20-year gestation periods for large space telescopes. Commercial space will lower launch and spacecraft costs substantially, enable cost-effective on-orbit servicing, cheap lunar landers and interplanetary cubesats by the early 2020s. A doubling of flagship launch rates is not implausible. On a longer timescale it will enable large structures to be assembled and constructed in space. These developments will change how we plan and design missions.

Abstract:The advances in solar technology and electric propulsion now offer the promise of new, very capable space transport systems that will allow us to effectively explore the solar system. NASA has developed many concepts of space-powered spacecraft with power levels ranging from tens to hundreds of kilowatts for robotic and asteroid-driven missions and Mars. This paper describes two electrical/chemical propulsion concepts developed over the last 5 years and discusses how they could be used to humanize the solar system. A possible sustainable solution for the supply of spacecraft power would be to achieve and utilization nuclear fusion energy. The paper briefly presents some contributions to obtaining nuclear fusion energy as a viable alternative to current energies. For the energy of spacecraft of the future, the combination of photovoltaic energy (obtained from the stars) and that produced by a nuclear reactor on fusion is essential. NASA is developing a strategy to send a crew to Mars by 2030. To achieve this goal, NASA plans to develop the technology for long-haul flights including advanced transportation work and living systems. Among these technologies, Solar Electric Propulsion (PES) has been identified as very effective in moving large masses through interplanetary space. For decades it has been known that missions outside the low Earth's orbit can be made cost-effective by PSA, but yet such space missions have not yet been done because the manufacturing technology is not advanced enough. NASA's recent investments in solar power systems and propulsion systems have now matured so that the 50 kW PSA is already ready to be put on flight missions. It has been demonstrated analytically that these technologies can be resized to systems with the power of several hundred kilowatts.

Abstract:Recently, we witnessed how the synergy of small satellite technology and solar sailing propulsion enables new missions. Together, small satellites with lightweight instruments and solar sails offer affordable access to deep regions of the solar system, also making it possible to realize hard-to-reach trajectories that are not constrained to the ecliptic plane. Combining these two technologies can drastically reduce travel times within the solar system, while delivering robust science. With solar sailing propulsion capable of reaching the velocities of ~5-10 AU/yr, missions using a rideshare launch may reach the Jovian system in two years, Saturn in three. The same technologies could allow reaching solar polar orbits in less than two years. Fast, cost-effective, and maneuverable sailcraft that may travel outside the ecliptic plane open new opportunities for affordable solar system exploration, with great promise for heliophysics, planetary science, and astrophysics. Such missions could be modularized to reach different destinations with different sets of instruments. Benefiting from this progress, we present the "Sundiver" concept, offering novel possibilities for the science community. We discuss some of the key technologies, the current design of the Sundiver sailcraft vehicle and innovative instruments, along with unique science opportunities that these technologies enable, especially as this exploration paradigm evolves. We formulate policy recommendations to allow national space agencies, industry, and other stakeholders to establish a strong scientific, programmatic, and commercial focus, enrich and deepen the space enterprise and broaden its advocacy base by including the Sundiver paradigm as a part of broader space exploration efforts.

Quest for a novel force: a possible revolution in aerospace

Abstract:Conventional understanding of flight in aerospace depends primarily on the application of Newton's laws in the design of components providing propulsive and lifting forces. This reality has given incredible advances in capability during nearly a century of endeavour. But this century of achievement was preceded by millennia of speculation, literary fantasies, some tentative scientific proposals and brave practical attempts of how manned flight might be attained. However, the coming of reality did not stop the aerial speculation which has continued over the last century with various doubtful claims that have disguised an underlying seriousness seeking for alternative means of accomplishing aeronautical ambitions. Recently, three professional programmes have emerged, directed to discovering such new ways of propulsion, viz., the NASA Breakthrough Propulsion Physics programme, the BAE SYSTEMS Project Greenglow and work at ESA. The author has followed these novel developments for over half a century and is now a consultant to the BAE SYSTEMS programme.BAE SYSTEMS monitors many evolving scientific and technical advances to seek competitive advantages for its products and pays appropriate attention to the most promising solutions. Some of these are correctly described as breakthroughs and in the speculative field of advanced propulsion it seeks advice on the truth or falsehood of the many quantitative claims that have been published. The primary task is to design radically new aeronautical systems based on new physical principles. This paper sets out this strategy which has the following logic:•to account for previous claims, patents and investigations and assess their validity,•make scientific experiments of new phenomena and generate theories,•propose radically new ways (engines) of providing aeronautical forces,•assess whether any of these imaginary engines could improve aerospace performance,•if so, how significant would the improvement be?•it appears that one solution offers superb improvement, globally, for over a century ahead,•hence, it is well worth the effort to realise this in practice,•one of the proposed engines is in sequence with previous transport systems,•the best way forward is serendipitous collaboration with advanced thinkers in physics, and•Project Greenglow links new physics with novel engines and global transport performance by means of evolving techniques used in novel ways This process, described in this paper, is essentially ‘project-led research’ (sometimes called ‘focussed search’), in which theoretical possibilities are subjected to the classical process of conjecture and refutation, also employed in a previous paper published in this journal, viz., ‘Global issues affecting aeronautics’ (Prog. Aerosp. Sci. 1999; 35: 413).There is an important distinction between the UK programme and others, i.e., the inclusion of aeronautics as well as spaceflight, whereas the others deal exclusively with spaceflight.

Viability of a Dyson Swarm as a Form of Dyson Sphere

Abstract:First conceptualised in Olaf Stapledon's 1937 novel 'Star Maker', before being popularised by Freeman Dyson in the 1960s, Dyson Spheres are structures which surround a civilisation's sun to collect all the energy it radiates. Through discussion of the features of such a feat of engineering, the viability, scale and likely design of a Dyson structure is evaluated, before details about each stage of its construction and operation are investigated. It is found that a Dyson Swarm, a large array of individual satellites orbiting another planetary body, is the ideal design for such a structure over the solid sun-surrounding structure which is typically associated with the Dyson Sphere. In our solar system, such a structure based around Mars would be able to account for the Earth's 2019 global power consumption of 18.35 TW within fifty years once its construction has begun, which itself could start by 2040. The swarm of over 5.5 billion satellites would be constructed on the surface of Mars before being launched by electromagnetic accelerators into a Martian orbit. Efficiency of the Dyson Swarm ranges from around 0.74 - 2.77% of the Sun's $3.85\times10^{26}$ W output, with large potential for growth as both current technologies improve and future concepts are brought to reality in the time before and during the swarm's construction. Not only would a Dyson Swarm provide a near infinite, renewable power source for Earth, it would allow for significant expansions in human space exploration and for our civilisation as a whole.

Abstract:This paper presents a new and innovative design for scaleable space solar power systems based on satellite self-assembly and microwave spatial power combination. Lower system cost of utility-scale space solar power is achieved by independence of yet-to-be-built in-space assembly and transportation infrastructure. Using current and expected near-term technology, this study explores a design for near-term space solar power low-Earth orbit demonstrators and for mid-term utility-scale power plants in geosynchronous Laplace plane orbits. High-level economic considerations in the context of current and expected future launch costs are given as well.

Abstract:As the world faces an impending dearth of fossil fuels, most immediately oil, alternative sources of energy must be found. 174 PW worth of energy falls onto the top of the Earth's atmosphere in the form of sunlight which is almost 10,000 times the total amount of energy used by humans on Earth, as taken from all sources, oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear and hydroelectric power combined. If even a fraction of this could be harvested efficiently, the energy crunch could in principle be averted. Various means for garnering energy from the Sun are presented, including photovoltaics (PV), thin film solar cells, quantum dot cells, concentrating PV and thermal solar power stations, which are more efficient in practical terms. Finally the prospects of space based (satellite) solar power are considered. The caveat is that even if the entire world electricity budget could be met using solar energy, the remaining 80% of energy which is not used as electricity but thermal power (heat) still needs to be found in the absence of fossil fuels. Most pressingly, the decline of cheap plentiful crude oil (peak oil) will not find a substitution via solar unless a mainly electrified transportation system is devised and it is debatable that there is sufficient time and conventional energy remaining to accomplish this. The inevitable contraction of transportation will default a deconstruction of the globalised world economy into that of a system of localised communities.

Abstract:Abstract With the increasing demands of versatile and long-lasting requirements of deep space missions, space nuclear reactor (SNR) power system is becoming the most potential energy source compared to conventional solar-battery and chemical energy in the future large-scale and long-life space missions. Since the very first successful launch of SNR system (SNAP-10A) in 1965, the United States, the Soviet Union / Russia, the European Union, Japan, Brazil and China have proposed various technical routes and schemes for SNR technologies over the past few decades. This paper presents a historical review of several key technologies (i.e., space nuclear reactor system and thermoelectric conversion system), especially focus on technical progress for recent decade and discusses on-going development activities. The paper also presents a forecast of potential future space applications of these key technologies.
