Abstract:The accelerating build-out of solar farms on Earth is already hitting speed bumps, including public pushback against the large tracts of land required and a ballooning backlog of requests for new transmission lines and grid connections. Energy experts have been warning that electricity is likely to get more expensive and less reliable unless renewable power that waxes and wanes under inconstant sunlight and wind is backed up by generators that can run whenever needed. Abstract:Robust space development as usually envisioned by its advocates—the persistent and self-sustaining presence of humans and industry in space—is stymied by a fundamental paradox: for there to be a reason to develop space, there must already be people and industry there. To the extent that space development is a priority for any government or entity, this paradox must be surmounted. Space-based solar power (SBSP) production may represent the best way to overcome this paradox because of the technology's inherent scalability, rising demand for terrestrial clean baseload energy, and potential for self-funding. However, technical, regulatory, legal (domestic and international), and geopolitical challenges to deploying this technology on a large scale remain. In this article, the authors describe how SBSP development can potentially overcome the development paradox and offer an analysis of the challenges to this concept and potential approaches to resolving them. Furthermore, they provide a tentative research and commercialization roadmap for a private-public partnership for SBSP to deliver sustainable space development, identifying relative advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:The advances in solar technology and electric propulsion now offer the promise of new, very capable space transport systems that will allow us to effectively explore the solar system. NASA has developed many concepts of space-powered spacecraft with power levels ranging from tens to hundreds of kilowatts for robotic and asteroid-driven missions and Mars. This paper describes two electrical/chemical propulsion concepts developed over the last 5 years and discusses how they could be used to humanize the solar system. A possible sustainable solution for the supply of spacecraft power would be to achieve and utilization nuclear fusion energy. The paper briefly presents some contributions to obtaining nuclear fusion energy as a viable alternative to current energies. For the energy of spacecraft of the future, the combination of photovoltaic energy (obtained from the stars) and that produced by a nuclear reactor on fusion is essential. NASA is developing a strategy to send a crew to Mars by 2030. To achieve this goal, NASA plans to develop the technology for long-haul flights including advanced transportation work and living systems. Among these technologies, Solar Electric Propulsion (PES) has been identified as very effective in moving large masses through interplanetary space. For decades it has been known that missions outside the low Earth's orbit can be made cost-effective by PSA, but yet such space missions have not yet been done because the manufacturing technology is not advanced enough. NASA's recent investments in solar power systems and propulsion systems have now matured so that the 50 kW PSA is already ready to be put on flight missions. It has been demonstrated analytically that these technologies can be resized to systems with the power of several hundred kilowatts.

Abstract:Space solar power is an old idea. From its initial suggestion in the 1940s to the first practical concept by Dr. Peter Glaser in 1968, it has been analyzed, studied, and refined many times. Multiple government institutions, including NASA, JAXA, ESA, and CAST have invested significant funds into developing direct space solar power research. In parallel to these direct studies, considerable investment has also flowed into enabling technologies that serve as the cornerstone of current space solar power development concepts, including space solar panels, space hardware manufacturing, low-cost launch, wireless power transfer, robotic assembly, and swarm monitoring/control. In the last few years, space solar power concepts and studies have received increased funding, including non-governmental funding showing a strong positive growth trend. Multiple reports in 2021 and 2022, including from this author, have found that while space solar power has been technically feasible for decades, falling launch and hardware costs have only recently made it economically viable as well. Despite these findings, translation from economic feasibility to economic reality will require additional high-value investment. Sourcing these new funds requires investment context. This technical paper will present a state of the industry report on space solar power, including the total and source distribution of historical investments. It further contextualizes the investments in space solar power with the scale of investment in key technologies and their current technology readiness levels. The methodologies developed for this report and the data sourced are intended to serve as a catalyst, alongside industry feedback, to create a template for ongoing reporting of this growing market sub-sector and ultimately drive the full deployment of this technology.

Abstract:The rapid cost growth of flagship space missions has created a crisis for astronomy and planetary science. We have hit the funding wall. For the past 3 decades scientists have not had to think much about how space technology would change within their planning horizon. However, this time around enormous improvements in space infrastructure capabilities and, especially, costs are likely on the 20-year gestation periods for large space telescopes. Commercial space will lower launch and spacecraft costs substantially, enable cost-effective on-orbit servicing, cheap lunar landers and interplanetary cubesats by the early 2020s. A doubling of flagship launch rates is not implausible. On a longer timescale it will enable large structures to be assembled and constructed in space. These developments will change how we plan and design missions.

Abstract:To address the future energy needs of an expanding population there is a growing need to find clean reliable sources of energy. The world population is expected to grow to 8.9 billion by 2050. The world’s energy demand is predicted to increase 44% by 2030. Currently, non-renewable resources such as oil, natural gas, and coal provide 85% of the world’s energy. Ground-based solar, wind, hydropower, and other renewable energy options are currently in place, but provide less than 1 percent of the world’s power. This percentage should grow but current renewable energy technology is limited and cannot provide enough power to match the growing need. Numerous scientists, engineers, and environmentalists have proposed space-based solar power as an alternative to traditional terrestrial photovoltaic collection. This paper focuses on one of the most promising other options; space based solar power (SBSP). SBSP has the potential to fulfil the planets growing energy needs in the coming centuries. The concept of SBSP is simple. Satellites are sent into space fitted with solar panels that can convert the sun’s rays into electricity. This electricity is then converted into microwaves and is then transmitted back to a receiver on the planet’s surface. The receiver on the planet’s surface converts the microwaves back into electricity where it can be fed into the power grid. Any company or country seeking to implement this technology faces certain legal and technical challenges. However the promise of SBSP is worth the cost of overcoming these challenges. This paper will focuses the technical concepts, need of SBSP, ,the history and developmentsin India and other countries. This paper will conclude its technical and historical overview with a review of possible solutions to the technical and financial challenges of SBSP. Abstract:Energy resources in outer space, also known as space energy, has been recognized as a promising supplement to conventional energy supplies on Earth, as well as an irreplaceable energy provision for future space explorations. A critical review is conducted in this paper, to identify the most potential space energy resources, to conclude on the current exploitation technologies and to suggest on the challenges and future directions. Space solar power station, also known as SSPS, is presented first as a well-known utilization of space energy, and we go through the international progress, evolution of the collection systems and the thermophotovoltaic systems. The main technical gaps hampering the practical application of SSPS is concluded then to inspire future investigations. Energy on Mars is presented afterwards as a representative ISRU(In Situ Resource Utilization)-type energy resource, and we select three potential resources on Mars worth exploitation: solar energy, geothermal energy and wind energy. A model describing the global solar irradiance on Mars is concluded, typical applications of geothermal energy is analyzed, the phase equilibrium of geothermal fluids is established and the wind turbine is designed. Furthermore, the review on energy on Moon is started with the discussion on lunar geology relevant with energy resources, and an example of feature detection using Convolutional Neural Networks is illustrated as an example to demonstrate the application of deep learning techniques in space energy exploitation. Solar energy is always taken into account in space activities, and we are more focusing on the discussion of Helium-3, a promising resource for nuclear fusion. The material for nuclear fission, Uranium, has also been detected on Moon. A is provided in the end with concluding remarks.

Abstract:A new aspect of human space exploration is considered - the production of information in space. Such production can be presented as a new type of territorial-production complex, that implements the infocommunicational energo-production cycle. A high-performance computing cluster and communications equipment are the load of a space-based solar power satellite which makes it possible not to transfer energy to Earth, but to use it directly in orbit to produce new information. The transition of information production into outer space is a trend in the fight against global warming. The costliness of information products allows us to assert creating a new actual segment of the space market. It is shown that the placement of data centers and high-performance supercomputers in orbit is an incentive to the development of cost-effective space energy. The main trends and technological challenges associated with the development of this field are considered. Using the example of the simplest structural mass model of the orbital computing center, it is shown that there is an optimal operational orbit for such a heavy artificial Earth satellite. Since the specific power of the solar power satellite becomes almost constant with increasing altitude, and the energy capabilities of the launch vehicle fall, then with certain parameters of design this orbit may lie below the Van Allen radiation belts.

Abstract:The history and direction of further development of space nuclear energetics are examined. The functional diagram and principle of operation of a promising, powerful, power-and-propulsion plant based on a gas-cooled reactor, a turbomachine energy conversion system, and electric rocket engines are described. Judicious variants are proposed for creating a nuclear power-and-propulsion system taking into account the limitations on the carrying capacity of existing launch vehicles. Promising directions for the application of powerful power-and-propulsion systems for interorbital transport of spacecraft and powering energy-intensive payloads are considered.

Abstract:In this article, we aim to maximize the net energy a solar-powered spacecraft gains when performing a sequence of tasks leading to attitude maneuvers over the spacecraft’s orbit, including an eclipse. The net energy can be defined as the integral of the power supplied by the solar panels minus the power used by the payload and satellite systems, including the attitude control system. The energy flow depends on both the power spent on the satellite electronic systems and the power received from the solar panels. Thus, the optimal attitude control problem is formulated so that the attitude of the spacecraft relative to the Sun during the maneuver is included in the calculations in addition to the actuation cost. This article proposes a cost function based on net energy to address this problem, introducing a cost function that incorporates the incoming energy from the solar irradiance and the outgoing energy due to actuation. A function that differentiates between the eclipse’s fully and partially shaded regions is added to simulate the solar irradiance in an eclipse. Our approach is demonstrated in a simulation study where the HYPSO-2 Earth observation satellite executes a sequence of imaging, communication, and energy-harvesting tasks. HYPSO-2 is a 6U CubeSat equipped with deployable solar cell arrays, and the optimal control problem is solved using IPOPT in CasADi.

Overview of NASA's space radiation research program

Abstract:NASA is developing the knowledge required to accurately predict and to efficiently manage radiation risk in space. The strategy employed has three research components: (1) ground-based simulation of space radiation components to develop a science-based understanding of radiation risk; (2) space-based measurements of the radiation environment on planetary surfaces and interplanetary space, as well as use of space platforms to validate predictions; and, (3) implementation of countermeasures to mitigate risk. NASA intends to significantly expand its support of ground-based radiation research in line with completion of the Booster Applications Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory, expected in summer of 2003. A joint research solicitation with the Department of Energy is under way and other interagency collaborations are being considered. In addition, a Space Radiation Initiative has been submitted by the Administration to Congress that would provide answers to most questions related to the International Space Station within the next 10 years.

Abstract:Space nuclear reactor systems are to be considered enabling technologies for the establishing of settlements on the Moon and on Mars. Their compactness, high power density, high reliability, long life and lower recurring cost are advantages compared to other energy sources. In addition, space nuclear reactors are capable of operating independent of the Sun, have an enhanced ability to operate in hostile environments and greatly simplify spacecraft attitude and control functions for most missions. On the other hand, space nuclear power systems do require additional mass for shielding radiation-sensitive payloads, and measures to be taken to protect human beings from output nuclear radiations. This paper provides a succinct partial overview of several technical and non-technical issues related to the past and present development of space nuclear power systems, especially applied to lunar exploration. The technical issues explored here are nuclear propulsion, nuclear reactor and power conversion systems and in-situ lunar power generation nuclear reactors. Non-technical matters approached are the public perception of space nuclear power, space policy, budget measures and the reducing space power workforce. ©2010 IEEE.

Abstract:After the Apollo Moon program, the international space station represents a further milestone of humankind in space, International follow-on programs like a manned return to the Moon and a first manned Mars Mission can be considered as the next logical step. More and more attention is also paid to the topic of future space tourism in Earth orbit, which is currently under investigation in the USA, Japan and Europe due to its multibillion dollar market potential and high acceptance in society. The wide variety of experience, gained within the space station program, should be used in order to achieve time and cost savings for future manned programs. Different strategies and roadmaps are investigated for space tourism and human missions to the Moon and Mars, based on a comprehensive systems analysis approach. By using DLR's software tool FAST (Fast Assessment of Space Technologies), different scenarios will be defined, optimised and finally evaluated with respect to mission architecture, required technologies, total costs and program duration. This includes trajectory analysis, spacecraft design on subsystem level, operations and life cycle cost analysis. For space tourism, an expected evolutionary roadmap will be described which is initiated by short suborbital tourism and ends with visionary designs like the Space Hotel Berlin and the Space Hotel Europe concept. Furthermore the potential space tourism market, its economic meaning as well as the expected range of the costs of a space ticket (e.g. $50,000 for a suborbital flight) will be analysed and quantified. For human missions to the Moon and Mars, an international 20 year program for the first decades of the next millennium is proposed, which requires about $2.5 Billion per year for a manned return to the Moon program and about $2.6 Billion per year for the first 3 manned Mars missions. This is about the annual budget, which is currently spend by the USA only for the operations of its Space Shuttle fleet which generally proofs the affordability of such ambitious programs after the build-up of the International Space Station, when corresponding budget might become again available.

Abstract:GEO communication satellites generate significant revenue but can only function reliably for approximately 10 years on orbit. One of the main drivers that limits the reliability of a GEO satellite is the electric power system, and in particular, anomalies related to batteries and degradation of the solar arrays. Given the high cost and relatively short lifespan of GEO satellites, there has been increased research activity towards developing on-orbit servicing systems. However, most of the existing servicing systems are expensive, highly customized, and focus on refueling tasks. On-orbit refueling can be very useful, however, it does not improve satellite reliability which is crucial for long-term missions. Therefore, we propose SSPARE (Space Solar Power Autonomously Reconfigurable Elements), a cost-effective, self-servicing power system. Aside from improving satellite reliability, SSPARE enables to generate up to 6 times more power per launch compared to a traditional GEO communication satellite. This study explores why GEO satellites fail and elaborates on the SSPARE concept. A comparison of SSPARE against a traditional on-orbit servicing mission highlights the benefits of the proposed concept. With humanity striving to become more and more Earth-independent, this work aims to build a foundation for future systems such as large solar power farms on-orbit.
