Abstract:With the deepening exploration of space by humans,traditional radio frequency(RF)communication increasingly fails to meet the demands of high-speed deep space communication.Various spacefaring nations have undertaken research on deep space optical communication technology.Optical communication is a crucial means of achieving space communication.Compared to traditional RF communication,optical communication offers advantages such as high communication speed,small terminal payload,strong anti-interference capabilities and so on,making it more suitable for ultra-long-distance deep space communication.Currently,the United States leads in research and has successfully conducted two deep space optical communication demonstrations.This paper provides a comprehensive review of existing research plans and demonstration results in deep space optical communication.It analyzes the key technologies for implementing deep space optical communication,reflects on the developmental history,and contemplates the future prospects of deep space optical communication.

Abstract:Future spacecraft will require a paradigm shift in the way the information is transmitted due to the continuous increase in the amount of data requiring space links. Current radiofrequency-based communication systems impose a bottleneck in the volume of data that can be transmitted back to Earth due to technological as well as regulatory reasons. Free-space optical communication has finally emerged as a key technology for solving the increasing bandwidth limitations for space communication while reducing the size, weight and power of satellite communication systems, and taking advantage of a license-free spectrum. In the last few years, many missions have demonstrated in orbit the fundamental principles of this technology proving to be ready for operational deployment, and we are now witnessing the emergence of an increasing number of projects oriented to exploit space laser communication (lasercom) in scientific and commercial applications. This chapter describes the basic principles and current trends of this new technology.

Abstract:To expand frontiers and achieve measurable progress, instruments such as hyperspectral imagers are increased in resolution, field of view, and spectral resolution and range, leading to dramatically higher data volumes. Increasingly, data need to be returned from greater distances, ranging from the Sun-earth L1/ L2 points at 1.5 million km, to L4/L5 halo orbits at 1 AU, to several AU in the case of planetary probes. Optical communications can significantly reduce resource competition, requiring significantly fewer passes per day and/or shorter overall passes, and thereby enable far greater, transformative science return from individual missions and the capacity to support multiple such missions within a smaller ground network. Optical communications also provides superior performance and increased ranges for Inter-satellite Links (ISL) from 2,000 to 10,000 km for Swarms and DSMs. Lastly, the only way to guarantee timely space weather warnings (with a target of 15 minutes latency) is through space relays in MEO or GEO orbits, a strategy which also includes optical communications.

Abstract:The increasing demand for high-speed, large capacity data transmission between the earth and satellites may be solved by optical communications today. Otherwise, the satellite-to-earth communication will be constrained by the transmission bottleneck. Relevant researches have been done and resultfull achievements have been obtained, such as the Optical Communication Demonstration System, Optical Demonstration and High-speed Link Devices, STRV-2 Experiment, Geosynchronous Lightweight Technology Experiment (GeoLITE), and Mars Laser Communication Demonstration System (MLCD) developed by the US, as well as the laser communication experimental devices developed by Japan. Researches have also been conducted in China in the areas of Acquisition, Pointing and Tacking (APT), optical phased array and new types of satellite-to-earth communications. There are many problems that are expected to be solved in the future, such as how to improve APT performance, how to overcome the effect of space atmosphere, how to raise the data rate to Gigabit per second with low bit error rate, and how to link the satellite and earth optical networks.

Abstract:The low-Earth orbiting (LEO) satellite constellations in the 90s (such as Iridium and Globalstar), although representing a major technical breakthrough, were not able to achieve the initial goal of complementing the second-generation mobile terrestrial networks due to the rapid worldwide adoption of GSM and other standards. However, the decline of conventional linear television and the persisting need to mitigate the digital divide still affecting billions of people recently generated a renewed interest by private investors for Low-Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite mega-constellations. The mega-constellations under deployment can provide lower delays versus geostationary (GEO) satellites, broadband access anywhere, anytime leveraging the low-cost series production of small satellites, and more affordable launch solutions. At the end of the last decade, key industrial players realized the potential complementary role satellites can play to extend the 5G terrestrial network coverage over low-density populated areas, oceans, or similar. This has led to great technological developments and a sharp reduction in LEO satellite volume, weight, and, ultimately, manufacturing and launching costs. Also, it has triggered the inclusion of a non terrestrial network (NTN) component in the latest 5G 3GPP standard releases. Yet, there are many technological challenges remaining to ensure that both the quality and cost of the NTN services are comparable to the terrestrial counterpart. This is mainly due to the constraints in satellite payload power, mass, and antenna size. This comes in addition to the stringent power flux density limitations on the ground, in particular in the below 6 GHz satellite bands. The required order of magnitude increase of the effective delivered throughput and service cost reduction can only be achieved by a mix of system architectures and innovative technologies for both the space and ground segments. Space communication systems and technologies will also play a key role in human return to the Moon planned for mid-2020, to prepare for human exploration of Mars in the more distant future and further cosmic exploration. As missions voyage further from Earth, it is important to consider how we can continue to reliably communicate with them and how they will accurately navigate through space when they are so far from home.

Abstract:Exotic optical fibers and glasses are the platform material for photonics applications, primarily due to their superior signal transmission (speed, low attenuation), with extending bandwidth deep into the infrared, exceeding that of silica fibers. Gravitational effects (convection sedimentation) have a direct impact on the phase diagram of these materials and influence melting properties, crystallization temperatures, and viscosity of the elemental mix during the manufacturing process.Such factors constitute limits to the yield, transmission quality, and strength and value of these fibers; they also constrain the range of applications. Manufacturing in a gravity-free environment such as the Earth's Orbit also helps with other aspects of the fabrication process (i.e., improved form factor of the manufacturing unit, sustainability). In this article, revolutionary developments in the field of photonics over the past decade merge with the paradigm shift in the privatization of government-owned capabilities supporting a more diverse infrastructure (parabolic, suborbital, orbital), reduced price, and increased frequency to access space and the microgravity environment. With the increased dependence on data (demand, bandwidth, efficiency), space and the microgravity environment provide opportunities for optimized performance of these exotic optical fibers and glasses underlying the development of enabling technologies to meet future data demand. Existing terrestrial markets (Internet, telecommunications, market transactions) and emerging space markets (on-orbit satellite servicing, space manufacturing, space resources, space communications, etc.) seem to converge, and this innovative material processing opportunity of exotic optical fibers and glasses might just be that "killer app": technologically competitive, economically viable, and with the ability to close the business case.

Abstract:The Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD) is a space flight technology demonstration mission, led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Maryland and sponsored by NASA's Technology Demonstration Missions (TDM) Program and Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Program Office. The LCRD payload is hosted on the Department of Defense (DoD) Space Test Program (STP) Satellite-6 (STPSat-6) space vehicle and will operate in geostationary orbit (GEO). Launching in late 2021, the mission will conduct a minimum of two years of communication experiments with optical terminals at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Table Mountain Facility, in Hawaii, on the International Space Station in LEO, and via a high bandwidth radio link to White Sands Complex (WSC), New Mexico. This paper focuses on the assembly, integration, and test (AI&T) campaign spanning more than four years, using multiple test facilities, and involving multiple partner collaborations.

Abstract:Technology advancement delves into the potential adoption of optical laser links over traditional Radio Frequency (RF) waves in space communication systems. Optical link in space offers enhanced speed and efficiency, accompanied by advantages in lower mass and power. Factoring in launch costs and potential data rate advancements, optical system will highly outperform conventional RF system. This study employs link budget calculations and System Tool Kit (STK) simulations to assess the dependability of space laser communication. Link performance for both with and without turbulence are evaluated through parameters like Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), channel capacity, and bit-error-rate (BER). Elevation angles and ground station altitudes increase are shown to improve received power for downlink and uplink, while atmospheric factors such as rain and dense clouds are reducing its value. Turbulence is specifically proven to significantly reduce link performance as it changed BER result from 1.00x10-30to 7.885x10-12 in STK laser simulation. Mitigation potentials to cope with those limitations are then identified including controlling laser output, hybrid switching between optical and RF systems, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation relay, and strategic ground station selection and diversity.

Abstract:With the large number of deep space (DS) missions anticipated by the end of this decade, reliable-high capacity DS communication systems are needed more than ever. Nevertheless, existing DS communication technologies are far from meeting such a goal. Improving current systems does not only demand a system engineering leadership, but more crucially a well investigation in the potentials of emerging technologies in overcoming the challenges of the unique-ultra long DS communication channel. This project starts with a survey that highlights current technologies, trends, and advancements, investigates potentials, and identify challenges, and in essence, provide perspectives and propose solutions. It focuses on free-space optical (FSO) communication as a potential technology that can overcome the shortcomings of current radio frequency (RF)-based communication systems. To the best of our knowledge, in addition, it provides for the very first time a thoughtful discussion about implementing orbital angular momentum (OAM) for DS, identifies major related challenges, and proposes some novel solutions. Furthermore, we discuss DS modulations and coding schemes, as well as emerging receiver technologies and communication protocols. We also elaborate on how all of these technologies guarantee reliability, improve efficiency, offer capacity boosts, and enhance security in the unique DS environment. In addition to that, an extended study on the design and performance analysis of deep space optical communication (DSOC) is included, with the most suggested modulation for such a link being pulse position modulation (PPM) and a focus on the communication between Earth and the planet Mars, which is an important destination for space exploration.

Abstract:Free-space optical (FSO) communication promises to bring fibre-like speeds to data transmissions between ground, sky and space. This is becoming more important in light of the increasing volume of data collected by aircraft and spacecraft. The University of Western Australia (UWA) is commissioning optical ground stations to support FSO communications payloads. We propose retroreflected laser links to drones as a useful step towards further ground-to-sky and ground-to-space FSO communications demonstrations. In this paper, we describe the operation of a hardware testbed for a high photon efficiency optical communication physical layer. This testbed was deployed over a slanted free space link to a drone to verify sub-systems required in communication between the ground station and a spacecraft in cis-Lunar space. Accomplishing this verification of the telescope pointing systems and communications systems would have otherwise been much harder or impossible without using a retroreflected drone link.

Abstract:This study discusses the current state of FSO technology, as well as global trends and developments in the industrial ecosystem to identify obstacles to the full realization of optical space-to-ground communication networks. Additionally, link performance and network availability trade-off studies are presented, comparing overall system performance between portable and large OGS networks in conjunction with a constellation of small low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. The paper provides an up-to-date overview and critical analysis of the FSO industry and assesses the feasibility of low-cost portable terminals as an alternative to larger high-capacity OGS systems. Abstract:In recent years, free space optical communication has gained significant importance owing to its unique features: large bandwidth, license-free spectrum, high data rate, easy and quick deployability, less power and low mass requirements. FSO communication uses the optical carrier in the near infrared band to establish either terrestrial links within the Earth's atmosphere or inter-satellite or deep space links or ground-to-satellite or satellite-to-ground links. However, despite the great potential of FSO communication, its performance is limited by the adverse effects viz., absorption, scattering, and turbulence of the atmospheric channel. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on various challenges faced by FSO communication system for ground-to-satellite or satellite-to-ground and inter-satellite links. It also provides details of various performance mitigation techniques in order to have high link availability and reliability. The first part of the paper will focus on various types of impairments that pose a serious challenge to the performance of optical communication system for ground-to-satellite or satellite-to-ground and inter-satellite links. The latter part of the paper will provide the reader with an exhaustive review of various techniques both at physical layer as well as at the other layers i.e., link, network or transport layer to combat the adverse effects of the atmosphere. It also uniquely presents a recently developed technique using orbital angular momentum for utilizing the high capacity advantage of the optical carrier in case of space-based and near-Earth optical communication links. This survey provides the reader with comprehensive details on the use of space-based optical backhaul links in order to provide high-capacity and low-cost backhaul solutions.

Abstract:Due to the military and commercial demands, space activities have become more frequent, and the exploration of the space around the world has been accelerating. The demand for high-speed data communications has prompted the development of satellite laser communication technology. Satellite laser communication has the advantages of large communication capacity, low transmitting power, long transmission distance, strong anti-electromagnetic interference capability and high security, which makes it gradually become an important direction for the development of space backbone network. Satellite laser communications terminals continue to become miniaturized volume, light weight and low power consumption, which makes it possible for small satellites applying laser communications technology. This paper introduces the development history and latest research progress of satellite laser communication in foreign countries, and the development status of domestic satellite laser communication, and summarizes some inspirations for the development of satellite laser communication technology.
Optical technologies for the observation of low Earth orbit objects

Abstract:In order to avoid collisions with space debris, the near Earth orbit must be continuously scanned by either ground- or spaced-based facilities. For the low Earth orbit, radar telescopes are the workhorse for this task, especially due to their continuous availability. However, optical observation methods can deliver complementary information, especially towards high accuracy measurements. Passive-optical observations are inexpensive and can yield very precise information about the apparent position of the object in the sky via comparison with background stars. However, the object's distance from the observer is not readily accessible, which constitutes a major drawback of this approach for the precise calculation of the orbital elements. Two experimental methods have been devised to overcome this problem: Using two observatories a few kilometres apart, strictly simultaneous observations of the same object yield an accurate, instantaneous 3D position determination through measurement of the parallax. If only one observatory is available, a pulsed laser can be used in addition to the passive-optical channel to measure the distance to the object, in a similar fashion as used by the satellite laser ranging community. However, compared to conventional laser ranging, a stronger laser and more elaborate tracking algorithms are necessary. The two approaches can also be combined by illuminating the object with a pulsed laser from one observatory and measuring the return times at both observatories. These techniques are explored by German Aerospace Center in Stuttgart using its orbital debris research observatory, in cooperation with the Satellite Laser Ranging station in Graz and the Geodetic Observatory in Wettzell. This contribution will present some of the results and plans for further measurement campaigns.

Abstract:Optical wireless communication (OWC), also called free-space optical communication, has recently evolved in many significant ways, and is now employed in a wide range of terrestrial and space applications. Examples include optical inter-satellite links for Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite, airborne or terrestrial optical wireless links for backhaul/fronthaul networks, and indoor visible light communication that piggybacks wireless data transfer to solid-state lighting infrastructure. OWC offers the use of unlicensed spectrum, has much larger band-width than legacy radio frequency (RF) systems, and is naturally more secure with low probability-of-intercept. Continued innovations in OWC technologies have accelerated commercialization efforts across many emerging applications. However, as these optical wireless systems and components are becoming more common, new design challenges emerge in their integration to the mainstream wireless communication technologies.

Abstract:As the amount of information to be transmitted from deep-space rapidly increases, the radiofrequency technology has become a bottleneck in space communications. RF is already limiting the scientific outcome of deep-space missions and could be a significant obstacle in the developing of manned missions. Lasercom holds the promise to solve this problem, as it will considerably increase the data rate while decreasing the energy, mass and volume of onboard communication systems. In RF deep-space communications, where the received power is the main limitation, the traditional approach to boost the data throughput has been increasing the receiver's aperture, e.g. the 70-m antennas in the NASA's Deep Space Network. Optical communications also can benefit from this strategy, thus 10-m class telescopes have typically been suggested to support future deep-space links. However, the cost of big telescopes increase exponentially with their aperture, and new ideas are needed to optimize this ratio. Here, the use of ground-based gamma-ray telescopes, known as Cherenkov telescopes, is suggested. These are optical telescopes designed to maximize the receiver's aperture at a minimum cost with some relaxed requirements. As they are used in an array configuration and multiple identical units need to be built, each element of the telescope is designed to minimize its cost. Furthermore, the native array configuration would facilitate the joint operation of Cherenkov and lasercom telescopes. These telescopes offer very big apertures, ranging from several meters to almost 30 meters, which could greatly improve the performance of optical ground stations. The key elements of these telescopes have been studied applied to lasercom, reaching the conclusion that it could be an interesting strategy to include them in the future development of an optical deep-space network.

Free Space Optical Communication for Inter-Satellite Link: Architecture, Potentials and Trends

Abstract:The sixth-generation (6G) network is expected to achieve global coverage based on the space-air-ground integrated network, and the latest satellite network will play an important role in it. The introduction of inter-satellite links (ISLs) can significantly improve the throughput of the satellite network, and recently gets lots of attention from both academia and industry. In this paper, we illustrate the advantages of using the laser for ISLs due to its longer communication distance, higher data speed, and stronger security. Specifically, space-borne laser terminals with the acquisition, pointing and tracking mechanism which realize long-distance communication are illustrated, advanced modulation and multiplexing modes that make high communication rates possible are introduced, and the security of ISLs ensured by the characteristics of both laser and the optical channel is also analyzed. Moreover, some open issues such as advanced optical beam steering, routing and scheduling algorithm, and integrated sensing and communication are discussed to direct future research.
