Abstract:The eastern plain of China is one of the most important grain production areas in China. Meanwhile, the plain is also an important coal production area with a large number of "coal-grain composite regions". Coal mining causes land subsidence and waterlogging, which destroys a significant amount of cultivated land. However, there is no dataset for the spatio-temporal distribution of subsidence water to assist related decision-making on a regional scale. Accurate monitoring of subsidence water is still a challenge, especially distinguishing among subsidence water, natural water and artificially excavated water by only using remote sensing data. Here, A new method to generate a dynamic map for the subsidence ponding year and the restoration year using the Google Earth Engine platform with 33-year-old Landsat imagery was created. The time segmentation method was used to first extract the change water pixels corresponding to subsidence water and artificially excavated water with similar trajectory features. Then, the morphological characteristics of the two types of change water at the beginning year of water accumulation are used to construct 13 landscape indexes. This approach utilizes the Random Forest algorithm to distinguish between subsidence water and artificially excavated water. The Huang-Huai-Hai plain area in eastern China was selected as the study area and extracted the subsidence water areas from 1986 to 2018. The identification accuracies for subsidence ponding year and restoration year are 88% and 85%. 79% of the subsidence water areas are located in cultivated land, which shows significant impacts to agricultural activities. The method proposed could be applied to other similar areas, the results could provide reference and data for decision-making and related land reclamation planning. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Globally, land subsidence (LS) often adversely impacts infrastructure, humans, and the environment. As climate change intensifies the terrestrial hydrologic cycle and severity of climate extremes, the interplay among extremes (e.g., floods, droughts, wildfires, etc.), LS, and their effects must be better understood since LS can alter the impacts of extreme events, and extreme events can drive LS. Furthermore, several processes causing subsidence (e.g., ice‐rich permafrost degradation, oxidation of organic matter) have been shown to also release greenhouse gases, accelerating climate change. Our review aims to synthesize these complex relationships, including human activities contributing to LS, and to identify the causes and rates of subsidence across diverse landscapes. We primarily focus on the era of synthetic aperture radar (SAR), which has significantly contributed to advancements in our understanding of ground deformations around the world. Ultimately, we identify gaps and opportunities to aid LS monitoring, mitigation, and adaptation strategies and guide interdisciplinary efforts to further our process‐based understanding of subsidence and associated climate feedbacks. We highlight the need to incorporate the interplay of extreme events, LS, and human activities into models, risk and vulnerability assessments, and management practices to develop improved mitigation and adaptation strategies as the global climate warms. Without consideration of such interplay and/or feedback loops, we may underestimate the enhancement of climate change and acceleration of LS across many regions, leaving communities unprepared for their ramifications. Proactive and interdisciplinary efforts should be leveraged to develop strategies and policies that mitigate or reverse anthropogenic LS and climate change impacts.

Abstract:Land subsidence, referring to the vertical sinking of land surface, is a significant geohazard posing serious risks to security of infrastructure, natural resources, built environment, and businesses in numerous places worldwide. Using deep learning approaches combined with more than 46,000 subsidence data, we predicted global land subsidence based on 23 environmental parameters. The generated global map of land subsidence covers historically documented and new subsiding areas. We estimate that more than 6.3 million square kilometers of the global land is influenced by significant subsidence rates. That includes 231,000 square kilometers of urban and dense settlement areas and a population of nearly 2 billion. The model revealed a positive correlation between the intensity of groundwater abstraction and the subsidence rate. Our results offer new insights regarding potential hotspots of land subsidence and provide the information required to devise necessary action plans and develop effective policies to mitigate this growing challenge worldwide.

Abstract:Land subsidence, an insidious and gradual geological phenomenon , presents a latent threat to future urban development and socio-economic progress. Beijing City, renowned for its high population density, has encountered significant challenges associated with land subsidence. In this study, we leverage time-series interferometric synthetic aperture radar (time-series InSAR) method to analyze the spatio-temporal patterns of land subsidence in Beijing. Furthermore, we quantify the contributions of natural and anthropogenic factors to land subsidence. Our findings reveal that land subsidence primarily occurs in the plain area of Beijing, exhibiting an average rate of −5.6 mm/year (Positive values indicate uplift, while negative values indicate subsidence.). Notably, several large-scale subsidence centers are identified, with the maximum subsidence rate reaching an alarming −232.7 mm/year. The assessments indicate that geological factors, specifically fault activity, account for 33 % of the observed land subsidence, while human activities contribute to the remaining 67 %, with groundwater overexploitation playing a prominent role. The insights gained from this study provide a foundation for understanding the causative factors behind urban land subsidence and can aid in the formulation of effective intervention policies targeting this critical issue.

Abstract:The Anthropocene has been framed around humanity's impact on atmospheric, biologic, and near‐surface processes, such as land use and vegetation change, greenhouse gas emissions, and the above‐ground hydrologic cycle. Groundwater extraction has lowered water tables in many key aquifers but comparatively little attention has been given to the impacts in the deeper subsurface. Here, we show that fluid fluxes from the extraction and injection of fluids associated with oil and gas production and inflow of water into mines likely exceed background flow rates in deep (>500 m) groundwater systems at a global scale. Projected carbon capture and sequestration (CCS), geothermal energy production, and lithium extraction to facilitate the energy transition will require fluid production rates exceeding current oil and co‐produced water extraction. Natural analogs and geochemical modeling indicate that subsurface fluid manipulation in the Anthropocene will likely appear in the rock record. The magnitude and importance of these changes are unclear, due to a lack of understanding of how deep subsurface hydrologic and geochemical cycles and associated microbial life interact with the rest of the Earth system.

Abstract:Climate-induced sea-level rise and vertical land movements, including natural and human-induced subsidence in sedimentary coastal lowlands, combine to change relative sea levels around the world's coasts. Although this affects local rates of sea-level rise, assessments of the coastal impacts of subsidence are lacking on a global scale. Here, we quantify global-mean relative sea-level rise to be 2.5 mm yr−1 over the past two decades. However, as coastal inhabitants are preferentially located in subsiding locations, they experience an average relative sea-level rise up to four times faster at 7.8 to 9.9 mm yr−1. These results indicate that the impacts and adaptation needs are much higher than reported global sea-level rise measurements suggest. In particular, human-induced subsidence in and surrounding coastal cities can be rapidly reduced with appropriate policy for groundwater utilization and drainage. Such policy would offer substantial and rapid benefits to reduce growth of coastal flood exposure due to relative sea-level rise.

Abstract:Land subsidence, a common geological phenomenon in deltaic regions, poses significant risks to infrastructures, environments, and human lives. Monitoring and understanding land subsidence are crucial for establishing resilient, adaptive, and sustainable environments. In this study, a robust multi-temporal interferometric synthetic aperture radar (MTInSAR) method was employed to monitor land subsidence in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) using 541 Sentinel-1 SAR images. Spatial auto- and cross-correlation analysis were applied to select the most reasonable explanatory variables from nine candidates in each city of the GBA. City-level geographically weighted regression (GWR) models were then constructed to explore the spatially nonstationary effects of natural and human-induced factors. The findings revealed subsidence velocities ranging from 0 to 83.7 mm/yr in the GBA from 2015 to 2021, with the dominant factors affecting subsidence varying among regions. Natural and human-related factors accounted for 51.13% and 48.87%, respectively. Further analysis of representative subsidence areas highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of ground deformation using MTInSAR, region-specific land subsidence mitigation strategies, and regular maintenance of urban infrastructure. These insights are valuable for policymakers and urban planners in comprehending the complex processes underlying land subsidence and informing decision-making processes for sustainable and resilient urban development.

Abstract:The early excessive groundwater exploitation caused extensive land subsidence in the Hangjiahu Plain (HJHP), threatening geological stability and infrastructure. Government restrictions on groundwater exploitation led to considerable changes in surface subsidence. To explore the distribution and causes of surface deformation after restrictions on groundwater exploitation, we used 46 Sentinel-1A TOPS images to detect the spatiotemporal distribution of surface deformation in the HJHP area from January 2019 to October 2022 using the SBAS-InSAR technique and verified it with leveling results. Results indicated the following: (1) The uneven surface subsidence in the HJHP was relatively apparent, with the localized subsidence concentrated in a few areas. During InSAR monitoring, the maximum subsidence velocity reached −21.0 mm/yr. The most severe subsidence area was in the Shengze town industrial park, with remarkable subsidence bowls and a maximum subsidence of −85.8 mm (2) Results were verified by comparing the InSAR results with leveling, and the results were in good agreement, indicating the reliability of the InSAR results. (3) Comprehensive analysis of the spatial distribution characteristics of surface subsidence, geological data and rainfall changes revealed that fault activity and rainfall changes had varying degrees of effect on surface subsidence in the HJHP area. (4) The comparison with land use data indicated that the built area was the dominant mechanism of surface subsidence in the study area. In addition, the effect of industrial activities on the surface cannot be ignored. The study results provide scientific data support for emergency disaster prevention work in the HJHP.

Abstract:Subsidence occurs from excessive groundwater drawdown, but varies in response to underlying hydrogeologic conditions, land use factors, and variations of pumping rates. For subsidence feature decomposition, the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) is used to identify to extract the main components of the land subsidence data, such as continuous trend of subsidence and seasonal subsidence from various regions. Result shows that the major subsidence feature components contain the long-term, periodic (seasonal), and intra-seasonal ones which are related to human activities and hydrogeology from the inland, distal-fan area and coastal area in west-central Taiwan. The subsidence trend and seasonal variation at the observations can be separated from empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for validation. Moreover, subsidence and groundwater monitoring data are used to generate the stress–strain relations at the major EOFs locations. The outcome implies a strongly elastic nature, yet reveals a diverse correlation between stress and strain within the subsidence region. The decomposition and identification of subsidence features offer valuable applications for the effective management of land subsidence and groundwater resources.

Abstract:Abstract Groundwater overdraft gives rise to multiple adverse impacts including land subsidence and permanent groundwater storage loss. Existing methods are unable to characterize groundwater storage loss at the global scale with sufficient resolution to be relevant for local studies. Here we explore the interrelation between groundwater stress, aquifer depletion, and land subsidence using remote sensing and model-based datasets with a machine learning approach. The developed model predicts global land subsidence magnitude at high spatial resolution (~2 km), provides a first-order estimate of aquifer storage loss due to consolidation of ~17 km 3 /year globally, and quantifies key drivers of subsidence. Roughly 73% of the mapped subsidence occurs over cropland and urban areas, highlighting the need for sustainable groundwater management practices over these areas. The results of this study aid in assessing the spatial extents of subsidence in known subsiding areas, and in locating unknown groundwater stressed regions.

The Deformation Behavior of Soil Mass in the Subsidence Area of Beijing

Abstract:Land subsidence induced by excessive groundwater withdrawal has constituted a major environmental geological problem in Beijing plain area.The construction of the monitoring network of land subsidence in Beijing began in 2002 and the network had covered the whole plain area by the end of 2008.Based on the data from layered marks and groundwater observation wells,the authors drew curves of variations over time in the aspects of both soil mass deformation and water level and relationship between soil mass deformation and water level,and carried out an analysis of deformation behaviors of soil mass with various lithologic characters at different depths depending on the corresponding water levels.As a result,the deformation behavior of soil mass is generalized into five categories.Some conclusions have been drawn:(i) the deformation rate of the shallow soil mass in the present is slowing down,and most of the mid-deep and deep soil masses are still in continuous compression at a faster speed;(ii) the sand strata are characterized by elastic deformation,and clay soil mass at different depths is usually characterized by elastic-plastic deformation and creep deformation and can be considered to be visco-elastoplastic materials.

Abstract:In the early stages, uncontrolled groundwater extraction led to the Hangjiahu (HJH) Plain becoming one of the areas with the most severe land subsidence in China. Since the beginning of this century, comprehensive measures have been taken to control the continuous aggravation of large land subsidence patterns in some areas; however, urban land subsidence issues, influenced by various factors, still persist and exhibit complex geographical distribution characteristics. In this study, we utilized Sentinel-1A images and the SBAS-InSAR technique to capture surface deformation over the HJH Plain in Zhejiang from 16 March 2017 to 20 January 2023. Through a comparative analysis with geological conditions, changes in surface mass loading, rainfall and groundwater, and land use types, we discussed the contributions of natural and anthropogenic factors to land subsidence. Augmented with optical remote sensing images and field investigations, we conducted a correlation analysis of the land subsidence status. The preliminary findings suggest that changes in surface mass loading and short-term heavy rainfall under extreme weather conditions can lead to periodic land subsidence changes in the region. Additionally, extensive infrastructure construction triggered by urbanization has resulted in significant and sustained land subsidence deformation. The research findings play an important guiding role in formulating scientifically effective strategies for land subsidence prevention and control, as well as urban planning and construction.

Reduction of Subsidence and Large-Scale Rebound in the Beijing Plain after Anthropogenic Water Transfer and Ecological Recharge of Groundwater: Evidence from Long Time-Series Satellites InSAR

Abstract:Beijing, China's capital city, has experienced decades of severe land subsidence due to the long-term overexploitation of groundwater. The implementation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) and artificial ecological restoration have significantly changed Beijing's hydro-ecological and geological environment in recent years, leading to a widespread rise in groundwater levels. However, whether the related land subsidence has slowed down or reversed under these measures has not yet been effectively monitored and quantitatively analyzed in terms of time and space. Accordingly, in this study, we proposed using an improved time-series deformation method, which combines persistent scatterers and distributed scatterers, to process Sentinel-1 images from 2015 to 2022 in the Beijing Plain region. We performed a geospatial analysis to gain a better understanding of how the new hydrological conditions changed the pattern of deformation on the Beijing Plain. The results indicated that our combined PS and DS method provided more measurements both in total quantity and spatial density than conventional PSI methods. The land subsidence in the Beijing Plain area has been effectively alleviated from a subsidence region of approximately 1377 km2 in 2015 to only approximately 78 km2 in 2022. Ecological restoration areas in the northeastern part of the Plain have even rebounded over this period, at a maximum of approximately 40 mm in 2022. The overall pattern of ground deformation (subsidence and uplift) is negatively correlated with changes in the groundwater table (decline and rise). Local deformation is controlled by the thickness of the compressible layer and an active fault. The year 2015, when anthropogenic water transfers were eliminated and ecological measures to recharge groundwater were implemented, was the crucial turning point of the change in the deformation trend in the subsidence history of Beijing. Our findings carry significance, not only for China, but also for other areas where large-scale groundwater extractions are causing severe ground subsidence or rebound.

Abstract:Abstract Anthropogenic land subsidence can be evaluated and predicted by numerical models, which are often built over deterministic analyses. However, uncertainties and approximations are present, as in any other modeling activity of real-world phenomena. This study aims at combining data assimilation techniques with a physically-based numerical model of anthropogenic land subsidence in a novel and comprehensive workflow, to overcome the main limitations concerning the way traditional deterministic analyses use the available measurements. The proposed methodology allows to reduce uncertainties affecting the model, identify the most appropriate rock constitutive behavior and characterize the most significant governing geomechanical parameters. The proposed methodological approach has been applied in a synthetic test case representative of the Upper Adriatic basin, Italy. The integration of data assimilation techniques into geomechanical modeling appears to be a useful and effective tool for a more reliable study of anthropogenic land subsidence.

Abstract:Extensive coastal deltas in the world are subsiding due to natural or anthropogenic activities. As the widest and youngest river delta in the world, serious coastal subsidence in the Yellow River Delta (YRD) has exacerbated the relative sea level rise (RSLR) and increased the risk of soil salinization and coastal flooding. However, there are rarely relevant studies that quantitatively separate the contributions from different driving factors to subsidence. In this work, we aim to provide a detailed and comprehensive analysis of coastal subsidence related to coastal brine pumping activities in YRD. We investigate the land deformation of the entire YRD by time series InSAR analysis (TS-InSAR) of Sentinel-1 images acquired between 2016 and 2021. The results reveal that fast subsiding funnels larger than 50 mm/yr are mainly distributed in the coastal brine mining clusters. We further used Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to extract the principal components and temporal patterns from the deformation time series. Taking geological data, precipitation, temperature, and human activities into consideration, we quantitatively separate the driving factors of coastal subsidence in sub-areas. We find that underground brine mining contributes to more than 94 % of the coastal subsidence of the YRD. In addition, precipitation is the most important natural factor that can affect the process of land subsidence in YRD, whereas other driving factors from soil consolidation, oil extraction and other activities are not noticeable. This study is expected to offer a cost-effective method for detecting and characterizing coastal subsidence in global sinking deltas, which will contribute to more accurate dynamic monitoring of coastal subsidence and a better understanding of land subsidence responses to anthropogenic activities.

Abstract:The terrestrial subsurface is estimated to be the largest reservoir of microbial life on Earth. However, the subsurface also harbours economic, industrial and environmental resources, on which humans heavily rely, including diverse energy sources and formations for the storage of industrial waste and carbon dioxide for climate change mitigation. As a result of this anthropogenic activity, the subsurface landscape is transformed, including the subsurface biosphere. Through the creation of new environments and the introduction of substrates that fuel microbial life, the structure and function of subsurface microbiomes shift markedly. These microbial changes often have unintended effects on overall ecosystem function and are frequently challenging to manage from the surface of the Earth. In this Review, we highlight emerging research that investigates the impacts of anthropogenic activity on the terrestrial subsurface biosphere. We explore how humans alter the constraints on microbial life in the subsurface through drilling, mining, contamination and resource extraction, along with the resulting impacts of microorganisms on resource recovery and subsurface infrastructure.

Abstract:The establishment of a quantitative relationship between land subsidence and its influencing factors is a crucial task to develop prevention strategies of land subsidence in specific areas. In this study, we examine the dynamic patterns of land subsidence before and after establishing the South-North Water Division Project (SNWDP) in Tianjin Plain (TJP) which aims at reducing groundwater extractions in certain areas. We used a statistical analyses to determine the key attributing factors contributing to land subsidence which was subsequently used to derive so called ‘critical water levels of land subsidence’(CWLS) used to manage groundwater extractions with objective to minimize further land subsidence. The main obtained results are as follows: Under the influence of the SNWDP, the groundwater level in the TJP has stopped declining and the water level has risen in most areas. The area of the ‘strong subsidence’, defined as the area with a rate larger than 50mm/y, has decreased from 16.0% before the SNWDP to 2.5% after the SNWDP. The results of the multi-scale geographically weighted regression model (MGWR) revealed that groundwater drawdown the 2 nd and 3 rd confined aquifer are the main contributors to the land subsidence areas which were classified as ‘strong’ and ‘medium’ land subsidence areas. Following the reduction in groundwater extractions, The behavior of surface deformation can be grouped into two categories. First, a rebound in surface elevation was observed. Second, continuous compression with lower subsidence rate. The first mode mainly occurs in the area of ‘medium’ and ‘weak’ subsidence . The second mode mainly occurs in the ‘strong subsidence’ area.
